Using Pedals w/ HX Stomp

I'm privy to the default expression pedal. Yeah, it's pricey (I bought it on a deal, but still pricey), but it's essentially like getting two pedals in one (because of foot switch), and it's built like a tank.

What are the best pedals to use with the HX Stomp?

lol...I think we need to narrow things down just a bit. In recent years, the guitar FX pedal market has exploded to such an extent, they now outnumber the stars in the Milky Way... what exactly are you looking for?

Lol I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to guitar pedals, I'm just looking for anything that compliments the HX Stomp nicely.

i am new as well, with that being said the OCD pedal would be a good starting point.  My goal is to use pedals that allow me to save blocks for the things i like to experiment with. Then you can play around with putting them in front, in a loop or behind the stomp.  Good luck

In my opinion, any pedal you like will complement the Stomp brilliantly. That's the beauty of the Stomp - it goes with everything.

The Stomp is the powerhouse on my pedal board, so I don't have a lot of fancy schmancy pedals to go with it. However, what I do have mates well with it (Freeze pedal, MXR Custom Comp, Il Diavolo Overdrive, Saucy Box Overdrive, Boss DS-1 Distortion, and TC Electronics Hall of Fame 2 Reverb).  I also use a 1 Spot Pro CS12 to power them all, and a Melo Audio Midi Controller for the Stomp.

My Stomp remains in a happily polygamous relationship with all of them.

I use my HX Stomp with a tube amp, as part of a pedalboard. I like the idea of freeing up blocks (and DSP power) in the HX Stomp. I use an overdrive before the HX, either setup as a clean boost or to push the amp into overdrive. After that I have a second overdrive set to full lead sound. Still before the HX Stomp I have a cheap Acoustic simulator pedal (cuz Stairway to Heaven!)... after the HX Stomp I have a looper and a EQ. I just recently added a expression pedal and I'm getting used to it.

To power it all I use an MXR ISO Brick. To control it all I use a loop switcher. I fit everything on a Pedaltrain Classic Jr.

I built this thing myself over several months and sometimes I feel like I could have had more functionality and sound options (for less money) with a full Helix... but this is modular and a lot of fun! :D

- Creation Labs 48V Holy Fire

- JHS Bonsai

- Mooer Acoustikar

- HX Stomp

- Source Audio Programmable EQ

- T.C. Electronics Ditto

- Mission Engineering SP1-L6H

- T.C. Electronics polytune 3

- Hotone Patch Kommander

- MXR ISO Brick (underneath and powers everything but HX and Holy Fire)

- George L's patch cables

I'm curious if anyone has tried using the effects from a POD HD500X into an HX Stomp? I seem to remember that the POD had pretty good effects overall. It would help the DSP if it works. Any settings adjustments needed from using it straight into an amp?

Hi,

It’s a good idea not to cross post the same questions.

See the replies in the thread you started.

Hope this helps/makes sense.

In my experience using external pedals can be hit or miss. And that goes for in front of the Stomp or in it's loop. Unfortunately you just need to try it out.

I've used a TC Spark Booster in front of the Stomp XL and it does a nice job boosting and coloring amp models. I've also used a Mesa Boogie Flux Five and it seemed to suck a bit of tone texture from that pedal. It sounded "good", but when the Stomp was bypassed, the Flux Five sounded amazing.

Also, I use a Vapor Trail delay pedal with no problem but my amazing Redwitch Medusa is weird. The Chorus side sounds perfect, but the Tremolo side sounds terrible.

I don't get it.

That being said, try out the pedals you want and bypass the Stomp and see if you can hear and feel the difference, if you do, send it back and try another.

I do also use my old Line 6 M9 with the Stomp controlling the M9 via MIDI. It works perfectly. This allows me to create Stomp presets with dual amps and offload the effects to the M9. I have since ordered a TC Plethora X3 to do the job of the M9. We'll see how that works.

IMO, the Stomp, by design intent is intended to be used with external pedals. Being the Stomp is DSP limited, external pedals allow you to have the best of both worlds. It just might take some trial and....trial until you find good mates.

Good luck!!
