Helix - What gear do you use for sound?

Hi folks.  I'm a Helix newbie, just picked up an LT.  Other than running it through a traditional guitar amp and cab, I'm curious what other gear folks personally prefer to use for output sound?  I mean for home practice and/or studio needs, not live performance (so don't need loud volume outputs).  For instance, what do folks think of the Powercabs?  Are there other better options, possibly with stereo output?  Thanks in advance.

For home use a pair of studio monitors is a good option. I suggest a minimum 6" cone.

Also, if you are familiar with guitar amp, cab, and multi-FX modelers, and hence familiar with the difference between them and the 'amp in the room' feeling you are well on your way with your new Helix.

 

However if this is your first modeler and you've only ever used an amp before you have a learning curve ahead of you. Your first reaction to your new Helix through your guitar amp may well be 'This sounds like sh!t'. Don't give up.

From what you have said in your post, I would say that studio reference monitors would be a good choice (especially for listening at lower volume levels). Depending on your budget, there is a huge range to chose from either powered or passive. If you are unfamiliar with them then you need to evaluate them in a realistic listening environment, comparable to your own listening space. As mentioned by “silverhead” in the post above, 6 inch cones would be a good start, but if you’re tight on space there are some excellent smaller desktop reference monitors. You need to shop around.

I'd agree with the previous posts for studio monitors given your description and need for stereo output.  I use Yamaha HS7 speakers for the studio and I use a Yamaha DXR12 for all my live work where I don't need stereo.  Whatever you choose be aware that you get what you pay for.  There are cheaper studio speakers but they won't compare with the bigger and more expensive and more professional units.

I’m probably in the minority here but I use my LT in 4CM with my Marshall DSL40C & 1x12 cab.  I like the amp in the room sound and really like my speakers (Celestion Creamback G12M-65 and T-75).  I also never really jumped on the IR bandwagon so considering all this I have no need for a Power Cab.

 

Some of my patches I use my DSL for tone and the Helix for effects only.  Other patches I use an amp in the Helix and route direct to the effects return of my amp so now it’s only a power amp at this point.  Since I’m using my DSL as a power amp I typically use a preamp in the Helix.  But some amp models are on the quieter side so I use the amp version which is louder and makes leveling volume across patches easier.

Yes, not my first go-around with modellers.  First time with the Helix, but past Boss and Line 6 user.  I'm definitely familiar with the amp vs. speaker differences.  I've already got a few amps, so all set on that end.  That's why I asked about "other than" amp options.

 

I just ordered a couple of smallish powered speakers - Alto TX208s.  So I'll give that a try for for a while to start, and possibly upgrade later.  Hopefully they work out.
