Stadium and Variax

Recommended Posts

I saw that the Stadium has a feature called NEXUX. The guy in the video said that one of the first updates on the Nexus feature will be making it compatible with Variax. I wonder if that means something for the Variax?

Using Variax with Stadium will require a separate hardware expansion device, the D10 I think it’s called. The Variax connects to the D10 using the familiar VDI input, and the D10 connects to Helix Stadium via the Nexus port. I don’t think it means anything new for Variax.

My understanding is that this will be available at launch with no update required.

Extra hardware (the Expand D-10 unit) is required for Variax interaction with Stadium. The reasoning behind that seems clear. Variax users represent a very small percentage of Helix Stadium owners. As recently as the Helix product Variax support was included in the main hardware. This meant that all owners paid for a feature that was used by only a few. With Helix Stadium the cost of Variax support is paid only by Variax users.

While that business decision may be disappointing to Variax users it may be welcomed by everyone else. The Stadium device costs less than it otherwise would.

btw… the same applies to Powercab owners. L6 Link functionality also requires additional hardware.

I just got my Stadium last night and will be returning it this week. No variax along with inability to configure layout to the configuration I’ve been using with Helix (top row patch view bottom row pedal view) makes it a deal breaker for me. My expression pedals that work with Helix with just a 2 conductor cable require rts cables with Stadium. All of that along with the steep $$ makes it a no brainer. Boo Line 6. I (like many others) waited optimistically for this. Big disappointment

I'm just trying to figure out what capabilities this new port has that eclipsed the need for a VDI port? It really doesn't make sense to add a port (with it's expense) for something that doesn't exist, while requiring a workaround for existing hardware.

I could not agree more with this post. Creating a port that does nothing saves money? Using the "tiny group of Variax users" as an excuse, I'll bet the people who use the MIDI ports are a much smaller group. I don't get this at all. Also, it's the end of August 2026 and I've yet to see anyone using a Variax (not just the magnetic pickups) with the new Helix. This scenario is just kind of a mess.

Simply put, this is the flagship model, why shouldn't it have all the same features the Helix floor, POD HD500X, etc. have? Why punish Variax users OR L6 link users with an additional $220 USD for the nexus breakout box so we can use all the gear we already own with the stadium? I know I may be speaking for a small group, but still were your loyal customers, why screw us like this? Is it so hard to take out that useless nexus port and put the VDI back in there? At least someone would get use out of it!!! And the part that really stings is, as of writing this comment, you CANNOT buy the nexus breakout box anywhere. Its listed on your site for us to be teased about, but can we buy this expensive box? Nope!!! WTF Line 6!?!

Their decision makes sense for the majority while also adding additional optional extras for those who want it - variax guitars aren't made anymore, they're old tech that L6 really didn't need to support with the new hardware but they will with the breakout box - You can keep your old helix until it comes out, it's not going to stop working because a new one came out.

The price of the helix would have been higher for all if they'd put the functionality inside the device, so you would be paying it anyway so it's not really an additional 220usd your original helix would have been baseline price + cost of nexus components and design/support at launch, may not have been the full baseline+220usd but wouldn't have been 'free'.

They've already said variax support will hopefully come with firmware version 1.5 (and the nexus box will probably be released alongside, that would be my guess - they're not going to release the box when it won't do anything as the firmware isn't ready for it).

The nexus port has been touted as something that will be able to do much more than just variax etc support, we'll learn what in the years to come
