Can I play through a preamp followed by an amp?
by 357mag on 2013-03-28 22:59:01

There are some preamp models in the HD Pro, like the Brit J-800 Pre, and I was wondering if I could choose that followed by the Brit J-800 amp and play through both at the same time? I noticed that you can choose just a preamp and a cabinet and the POD will give you sound without choosing a power amp, although I never did understand that.

I might be mistaken, but you can only have one 'amp' in a path - either the full one or a pre. You can't have both a pre and a full amp. You could have the pre in one path and the full version in the other path though - but it would be stereo/parallel, not series.

Okay I could put a preamp in one signal path and the JCM-800 in the other path. I wonder what that would do for my sound. More chunky and ballsy?

I hasten to point out that I haven't tried this, but could you not run through a pre-amp on path A then use an FX Send with a patch cable into the aux input into a full amp in path B? I can't see why it wouldn't work, although whether you'll get any benefit from it is another matter.
