Can I use the speakers from my 212 150watt spider iv as a guitar cab ?
by PanosACDC on 2013-02-14 13:28:55

i have the spider iv 150 watt combo and i am looking to buy a valve head. So i thought that if i built an 8 ohm or 16 ohm speaker input (i don't know yet if the custom celestion speakers ar 8 or 16 ohm) on the back, i could run it as a 212 cab ! I think that it is not so complicated but i have really not a great knowledge of all that ! Any help is acceptable !!! Thanks in advance !!! (exuse me for any grammar/vogabulary mistakes)

The speakers in your Spider IV 150 are 8 ohms each.  Yes you could disconnect them from the amp and use for an external amp head - note that you need to make sure you provide the correct impedance load to any amp - wiring speakers together in parallel or series will change the impedance load.

First of all thanks for the reply!

I apreciate your help! Now i need to know if the wattage of the head make a difference? For instance, I want to buy the blackstar ht club 50 watt head (50watts all-tube head) and my combo amp is 150 watts ! Is there any problem with that difference of the wattage??? The head has 100watt less than the spider! I think there is a difference between the wattage of an all-tube amp and a modeling amp, but i want to be sure so i don't do anything stupid!!!  Thanks in advance !!! You're right that 50 tube watts is much different than 50 solid state watts, which I don't fully understand (but accept)!

The Celestions in the Line 6 amp are rated for 75 watts each @ 8 ohms.  I would think that 1 of them should be able to handle the power of the Blackstar, but if you want to use both speakers, you will need to hook them up in series to present a 16 ohm load to that speaker output jack of the Blackstar.  Otherwise, you coudl use just one speaker to the 8 ohm speaker output jack of the Blackstar.

Thanks a lot for the imidiate response and for the support !! I think that i am going to build two inputs on the back, one (8 ohm) for one speaker and one (16 ohm) for the two speakers in series (as you said) !!! Thanks a lot (one more time!!!) !!

Note that modifying your Line 6 amp may void the warranty on it.  Good luck.
