  1. Or it could be another obvious one. That I'm prone to like the tube power amp more, or something. I was thinking of giving a SS amp a shot from my soundguys system. I am running the full amp models into the road king and not the pres. So far didn't like: -Helix direct to PA using cabs or IRs Did like: -Helix 4cm amp (effects only) -the above, but micd in another room. Only able to hear PA (nothing fancy, e609 draped over the top) -Helix full amp model into return on road king IRs: godscab, ownhammer, allure, guitar hacks, Jim's mesa IRs, etc.... Again all of this with no compression, effects of any kind, etc... This can get me to a smaller rig, but still carrying an amp and speaker.
  2. Sorry I haven't been back on... My exact thought was going to be a tube power amp into a cab as well. I tried this time with the helix into the return on my Road King and it sounded great. Not so well with my PRS custom 50. So going to look for either a nice single channel tube amp like a Dr z or a rack tube amp. What this means is I'm either not liking the IRs, cabs, mics, or the way it sounds through the PA.... funny though because I can mic my amp in another room and love the way it sounds through the PA.... which should be virtually the same thing if these cabs or IRs are true representations of micing a cab as I am doing.... My PA speakers aren't exactly top of the line, but they certainly aren't bad either. I run a full prx 700 system. And there's no way in hell a mixer running the same pres and converters they used at Chicago open air last year is causing poor sound (yeah I snuck to the sound pit, grabbed a crap ton of photos. Purchase confirmation was nice :) ) So yeah... when I get a chance to try it out, if all goes well there's going to be a couple amps going up for sale ;)
  3. Maybe some models are more compressed.... I don't know, I am trying. Not attempting to get any digs in on the Helix, I'd love to not lug a heavy expensive fragile amp around. I do know that for the year or so I ran only the helix direct I would have multiple snapshots @ different levels to go into quieter sections of the song with less dirt. Now the exact same song I use a rhythm and a lead snapshot and everything else I can get from my pick/volume knob. I'm still working at it. Getting closer tone wise now by using the boards meter, rta, peak/hold to analyze my frequency spectrum. Global eq and some tone shaping IRs.
  4. No amp and cab while running 4cm. Just effects.
  5. With trying to mimic the road king I'm using the Cali rectifier. Cabs have been mesa cabs with various speakers, mics and positions, settings have been extremely modest, anything less than amp and cab and I should probably be on an acoustic. I can upload a list of IRs a little later for more detail. Hpf between 80-110, lpf 5.5k-9k depending on IR. No eq, no compression, no modulation, no noise gate, z=auto, guitar in, xlr out, instrument/mic level in global settings, ummmm.... As minimal as I can possibly be to represent simply plugging into an amp to see if I can get just that as close as possible. Later I'll go into much finer detail and update the original post with as much information as possible. Yes, 4cm is my go to setup right now for lessons, practice, rehearsal and gigs. But between that every now and again I try to run the helix direct again and see if I can get it to simulate ummm.... perhaps amp in the room sound isn't correct as I'll probably never get that... . But unfortunately the only description I can give would be to get a sound that inspires my playing the same way running my amplifier does, and that's nothing anyone can work with. Boxy is the best description of the over all sound I can give.... and a loss of dynamics (volume: piano and forte) I do understand that it will never sound like the amp I'm sitting next to. Again, just trying to find something that has a more organic sound. Define organic? I can't, it's subjective but thats pretty much what you get trying to describe these things without hanging out in the same room. So it is what it is.
  6. Again, signal chain is empty :) Just amp and cab/IR. My thought has always been minimalistic on setup. Get the sound you want from the amp and cab and go from there, otherwise you're always fighting that: 'crap in, crap out' thing. And again: monitoring through an M32r and prx715s and prx718s. Oye! ;p Multiple amps, but essentially tried to match my road king to see if I could! IRs were basically various mesa cabs and various mics/positions and combinations, including room mics, etc... My back also thinks a little bogner atma and matching cab look nice too! Oh... I got GAS again....
  7. Lol. I think I need that "feel" Ran only direct for over a year (enough time to get used to it), I noticed my playing had suffered heavily. When I switched back and bought another amp my playing changed almost immediately. The band noticed, our sound guy came running up following our first set the night I brought the road king and praised the playing and sound. So, I do know my playing ... and well... just me ... prefers the real thing. But! My back really wants to make it work and every now and again I come back to it and try. As for the patch it is on and amp and a cab IR or cab. No compression, eq, etc. It's as dry as can be as a starting point. At the moment the helix is used 4cm for effects only. A lot of pedal for a delay block and occasional kinky boost! Even a harmony/pitch block. Definitely way more than I'm using her for.
  8. Yeah I played around with it a bit. Still seems "boxy" Through the same system we would use live: M32r Prx715s and Prx718s I want to hear what the crowd would hear.
  9. Tips tricks? Had it for some time, ran direct for a year. Switched back to using amps a little while ago. One of the things I missed was being able to play soft or really dig in and notice a HUGE difference from the amp. Today I started to goof with it again, using a plethora of IRs I've got. I can get pretty darn close on the "amp in room" experience and make it sound nice. But I just can't seem to get over this compressed feel. No matter how hard or light I attack the strings it seems to always be the same. Granted there's a slight difference, but MILES from what I can get from my boogie or prs. Any ideas?
  10. Been using this daily for a long time. She's stood up to a lot and never had a problem. Gigs every weekend, load in out, all I do all day. She's been worked hard and put away wet and always ready for another rough ride. Adjustable torque too. Used with hd500 and helix. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/FV500L
  11. I really REALLY want this!!! Oh dear god. It has nothing to do with editing while deaf. That's a rough assumption sir! I run 4cm, I just switched amps, editing midi in command center to my amp gizmo, pulling reverb blocks to use amps tank, making little edits that I know are needed after testing on a couple songs, helix for effects only. I run 60 patches for ONLY the reason of streamlining our sets, most patches are nearly identical. I just spent the past 1.5 hours making the same change over, and over, and over..... I would have enjoyed at least sitting on the couch, nice and comfortable doing this on my own time rather than in the studio!! I miss having this, like I did on my hd500 + dt50 rig. :(
  12. Helix floor in excellent condition, I'm a little OCD. Helix bag as well. That was it... And now for some rambling because... welllll... just, because: Working on a rack rig, I only use the Helix 4cm and really want to cut down on the cable runs while gigging. Secretly building a full midi analog rack rig and was just going to sell.... but... line 6 nailed midi on this thing and controllers that can do the same with scribble strips, rjm mastermind, cost almost as much if not more than the helix. Annnnd, I once had my rig fail me... if it weren't for a set list I used when only running the helix direct it would have been a short gig and probably me searching for a new job... sooo... having the helix is a REALLY nice backup solution! Any who... not sure how to work logistics, but if anyone has a rack unit and want the floor... let me know!! Thanks! Quickly typed on phone - excuse any English related things. A.D.D. joke: Why are there so many annoying grammar nazis online?!? Because English degrees don't land jobs!!! :P
  13. Hrm.... and where in your chain did you put that. Trying to see how this could be happening. Is everything else setup the way I posted? Palmer between the helix send and amp input only and everything else on the helix setup correctly and the amp. Not really one of those things that's left to interpretation (leave that to the poets and artists) this is electricity and pretty much an exact science. I gotta get to work. I'll take another look through your post and get back later. Good luck!!
  14. What is the make and model of the isolation transformer you are using?
  15. I personally can't vouch for that. No experience with the behringer unit. The last behringer unit I owned was a mixer that failed, I haven't had the urge to dip into that brand again.... although I do own an M32r, sooooo.... ; )
  16. ^^^ Excuse anything caused by this being writting on my cell during my first cup of coffee.
  17. I wish this could become a sticky with the amount of posts I see like this. I run 4cm, amps I've done it with so far: Mesa TC50, PRS Custom 50 and my main gigging amp Mesa RoadKing series 1 212 combo. She's old and beat to hell! Quiet and reliable! I gig with this setup every week and am booked solid through the rest of the year.... needless to say, it needs to be reliable and QUIET (I don't need a Mic sending hiss to our FOH or IEMs): I used to get crazy amounts of noise! This is what I use, ebtech hum eliminator: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Hum Setup Helix: -First I make sure everything in the helix menu is set to INSTRUMENT level, NOT line level. -Then make sure that the volume knobs on the Helix DO NOT EFFECT ANY 1/4 output. If you're using the helix to replace an effects rack then let it do just that. You don't use effects racks to adjust volume, that's for the volume knobs on the amp. The helix needs to be unity otherwise you're going to over complicate things in your gain staging. Setup the Amp: -The amps effects loop must be series. -The amps effects loop must be set to unity, on all three of the amps I listed above that was at 12 o'clock noon. Wiring: - Guitar > Helix input - Helix send > Hum Elimimator > Amp input - Amp send > Helix Return - Helix 1/4 out > Amp Return I have found no reason to use the second set of in/out on the hum eliminator and why add. As far as routing in the helix: - I simply drop a send/return block at the end of Path A and then send that to path B. I use path A for anything I want in front of the amp and Path B for anything after the preamp. On high gain channels I use the helix input blocks noise gate, extremely modest settings. Important: If you split anything AFTER the preamp (send/return block) in the helix you'll get a volume discrepancy. Click on the merge block and reduce output by -3db. I have found that I don't get great results (I enjoy anyways) using many of the distortion models. HOWEVER: Kinky Boost plays VERY nicely with my amps, it's been a godsend. The wiring in my studio is HORRIBLE and ungrounded, new/VERY old house. Everything is run through a conditioner and that includes: Helix, RoadKing, computers, studio monitors, PA mains and subs, everything! If you're home wiring is worse than mine you should burn it down. If I can get it quiet using this setup and you're still having issues then there's something wrong with the amp. I go into so much detail because I really am in a sub optimal situation when it comes to the power I'm being supplied, the age and condition of the amp I'm using, and the sheer amount of load I'm putting on a single ungrounded outlet.... If I can get it quiet with this setup and do it with little to no tone change with the helix in 4cm so can anyone! Just buy the hum eliminator
  18. I'll give it a go. I really wish I could have gotten the original receipt. I really like that extended warranty option. Disappointed there's no way to track down via, what should be, an organized digital file system. That should have taken up what? About 345KB... hmph. I have every set list, every student, every file ever created from day one of 11 years ago starting self employment.
  19. I. Am. All! About the toys! I don't have enough. I never have enough. Ooooo.... look shiny flashy things with knobs, buttons and switches!! I'll be right back.
  20. How good are the reverbs in the Helix? Good enough to invest almost $500 in a separate unit. Lol
  21. I am unable to obtain the original purchase receipt from guitar center. Their system must be horribly out dated. Apparently they don't know how to track an item that was purchased and returned to their store before I came to purchase it. Being its 2017 and well.... technology and stuff.... I find this rather absurd. All I have is my used receipt from guitar center and am out of luck unless line 6 is able to track information via the serial number. I'm going to open a ticket and see what, if anything, can be done within reason.
  22. Flickers. It flickers them on and off. I can press and press and press yet only momentarily see the snapshots. I've been using this pedal daily since June of 2016.... This is 100% NOT normal behavior. lol
  23. Let me try this again: My setup is top row stomp bottom snapshot. When I press "mode" the bottom row will flicker the snapshots and then go blank. If I keep trying I can eventually get it back to snapshots.
  24. Anyone experience problems with their mode switch, button #6? My setup is top row stomp bottom snapshot. When I press mode the bottom row will flicker the snapshots and then go blank. If I keep trying I can eventually get it back to snapshots. As I only use stomps on top/snap on bottom it isn't a big deal. Until I need to exit the looper, then I'm stuck without snapshots. The best time to experience this, of course, was while at a gig up in grand rapids.... I bought the unit used from guitar center a while back, needless to say it's not under warranty. Guitar is my sole source of income between lessons and weekly gigging, down time isn't an option. Yes I do understand in this case I should always have a backup, but I'm still paying down a few PA speakers, westone iems, dual wireless iem system, a Midas mixer and just purchased a backup amp and backup tubes for a PRS Custom 50 and a Mesa Road King (at a total of 2 rectifier tubes, 8 power tubes and 10 preamp tubes). Needless to say: that part of finances is stretched too thin already.
  25. Cool! Not for $10 a piece. That's highway robbery! Lol
