  1. Hey, looking around at some various options, I haven't been too thrilled with the effects on the helix as well as what it does to the tone on of my Road King. Since I'm not using the helix for amp modelling I am looking at switching to pedals in a rack w/ midi again. I was just wondering what you think of the eclipse's effects compared to the ones offered in the helix? Thanks!
  2. Title says it all. Will give this a shot. Helix Floor is in fantastic condition. Also have the Helix bag, also in fantastic condition. Not sure how to work out details. Thanks!
  3. I know the feeling. I am personally in a bad position. 1952 house, on a slab, no grounding, dodgy attic. Meaning.... I'm not running an extension cord through the house from the newer grounded side, AND.... I'm not ripping my walls apart. There is absolutely no grounding option aside from convincing my wife that my studio should be in the new big living room and the tv/furniture should be in the old one. I'm simply not in a position to pay for or do the work, and I used to be a framer; I know a good amount of what's involved (though not an electrician). With that mouth full out of the way. I popped a gfci outlet in there (yes I understand it isn't grounded, but a large spike from one side to the other it'll catch... it's that or nothin. And yes my two prong outlets have been switched to 3 prong even though they aren't grounded... save the criticism. Lol)... I have two florescent lamps in there. Replacement is in the works, but again, not at this exact moment. Shares a breaker with the bathroom, my son's room, and my mother in laws room (yes, she moved in with us. HEY!!! Ya wanna know what REEAAAALLLLYYY good for tour sex life?!?!?! When the master bedroom shares one wall with your mother in law and another wall with your 4 year olds room!!! It's awesome!) So it's about as bad as it gets. Now whats still being run off of this electrical nightmare: 2x JBL prx715 2x JBL prx718xlf 2x 8" studio monitors 2 computers Midas m32r Routers dbx pa2 Helix Wireless systems Road King amp And the wonderful florescent lamps Then there's the space heater in my son's room, the florescent lamps, tv, etc in my mother in laws room, and whatever in the bathroom. It's deeeaaad silent... Quite literally the chain is gfci > cheap power conditioner (I know their generally useless, but it was $50 for a rack mount power strip in my eyes) > that to another power strip mounted on my desk > everything else. The only two things in this room designed to stop anything like that is the cheaply power conditioner and the ebtech hum eliminator. Band practice, lessons, recording, everything all on at once and volume cranked... quiet as a mouse when no signal is passed through any speaker. Basically, if I can get silence with this situation. There's gotta be a simple fix you can use. Oye that was a mouth full. I was slightly ranting as well. Lol
  4. Line level vs Instrument/mic: Most amplifiers are expecting to receive instrument level. It's also the easiest way to achieve unity gain. On my Road King, for example, unity is @ 12 o'clock. If I were to send it a line level I would have to compensate for that on the amp. With no detailed markings on this knob that would be extremely difficult to achieve. Regarding power: you may be able to try an iso brick. Can't remember the company that makes a lot of them... but I can tell you they're white. Lol. Maybe use that to separate everything in your basement. Florescent bulbs can also cause noise if you have any.
  5. I run 4cm on a road king, PRS Custom 50 and a TC50. -I have my ebtech hum eliminator also sitting between the send on the helix and the input on the amp. -Send/return set to instrument level. -make sure effect loop is set to unity -input gate on, no gate after loop block -no volume control on 1/4 out. In global settings -does it hum when there is no guitar plugged in? -does it hum when no guitar and no usb plugged in? - Are you using the helix to change channels on the amp? What are your connections? - Are you using any sort of power conditioning/protection/etc? Another tip. If you split the chain after the loop block you will notice a volume increase. Setting level on the output/merge block to -3db will solve this as that is the amount added by splitting the signal.
  6. Like karis said. Use the instant in command center. Make sure to shut of PC message under global. I use the same basic idea to change channels on my Road King via the RJM gizmo or my RG16. Easy. If line 6 did anything right in the Helix it was their midi control! To the point that I am switching back to a full analog rack rig and, I know it's overkill, keeping the helix purely as a midi controller.
  7. Helix harmonies, pitch shifting, octave, whatever is usually kept at a low mix for me. The tracking needs A LOT of work. Basically I mix in just barely enough that you can tell something is there. Anything beyond that and its poor tracking REALLY shines through. The HD500 handled octaves and such better than the helix imo.
  8. Looking for any tips really. Using helix 4cm with a road king. Yeah there is some tone suck, and everything stage by stage is leveled. Small. But I notice it, though an audience won't. Back on point now that this is out of the way. The Mesa Road King really does handle most all I would need given its 4 channels and flexibility. But every once in a while I need a break up that sits somewhere between what I have dialed in between channel 1 and 2. However!!! When I pop any dist pedal in front of a clean channel it sound GOD AWFUL!!! It kills the amp... it's just terrible. I'm just looking for anyone that has used their helix 4cm with a clean amp + dist models that may have any tips and tricks. Yes... I ran the helix direct FRFR for over a year gigging every week non stop and as a daily driver for lessons. Went back to a mesa tube amp. It works better for me. Already been around the block there. Just not for me.
  9. Howdy! I run the helix 4cm and have gone to the front of the amp as well. I do this with a PRS Custom 50 and a Road King Series 1; and, have a tc50 getting delivered today!! In every situation there is terrible hum, buzz, noise, etc. I solved this with an ebtech hum eliminator. I just pop that between the send on the helix and the input on the amp. How are you liking the helix with the tc50? Notice any tone suck? What are you using as a basic 4cm template (If not the provided template)?
  10. First.... I ranted a little. Lol. So main point: Reverb = horrible digital 80s dance music Distortion = nearly unusable, tone suck extreme. No time to proof read, toddler pooping and I gotta wipe bootie butt.... 🤣🤣😂 Running the helix 4cm with a road king series 1. As title states. I have channel switching setup with an rjm amp gizmo. Fight off HORRIBLE loop noise using an ebtech hum eliminator. I am 90% certain I have all things set up correctly @ unity. -Loop 1 on the road king, which is series. -Send/Return level on amp at 12 o'clock; according to all things boogie and the manual this is unity. - helix global setting for volume on the 1/4" out is set to no control AND instrument level. Assuming it outputs unity at this point. -send/return also set at instrument level. Basically within the helix everything is set at instrument level, and the volume pots on the helix do nothing to the signal. I want to control everything at the Road King 1 and use helix for effects only. Issues: -any distortion pedal seems to suck the tone and life right out of the amp. And bad!!! Almost unusable. Best I have found so far is the helix model of the fulltone OCD. Settings: Tone: 7, High Peak, V2, Level: 8. Anything outside of this level and it boosts or drops volume way too much. It isn't like driving the input of the amp at all. It simply increases or decreases volume too much. Reverb on the Helix. I can't seem to get anything that doesn't make the amp sound digital. Great sound, turn on reverb and I feel like I'm in a first generation 70s electronica group. The helix it self pulls life from the amp. Procedure for setting levels: -guitar to helix, send return block inserted, send to amp front input -made sure level matched at this stage to that of plugging directly into the amp. THEN -send from amp to return on Helix, 1/4" from helix to return on amp. -again make sure all levels are equal by activating and deactivating loop on amp. All things equal I notice a little tone suck. But not so much that I think anyone else would notice, but still the distortions just seem really wonky. So bad to the point that I am using the helix for only: -midi control of amp -delay -chorus -wah -auto filter (one song) -octave pedal (one song and pretty bad compared to the octave I got with my dt50 and hd500) -hmmmm... Yeah that's about it. Aside from my boss volume pedal @ the end of the chain. Feel like the helix is a bit over kill for that and what I really want to use it for just isn't performing. I did run it direct to PA for over a year. Switched back to a tube amp just a couple weeks ago.... all the arguments in the world can't change the fact that Myself, as a player, just plays better on my tube amp. I can feel it again. And I feel like I'm interested in REALLY playing again. So 4cm vs direct FRFR is not the topic. I have an EXTREMELY expensive full Midas/JBL PA system and use it almost daily. Quality FRFR solutions are well available at arms reach (literally... I can't walk from my bedroom to the kitchen without walking through the studio) and have been used on a daily basis for over a year. The question is: can I get this thing to sound like a full analog rig, or am I doomed to sell and build a midi rack?
  11. I just received an ebtech hum eliminator yesterday. It worked wonders. Got a PRS Custom 50 last week and was not going to be able to take it out live. This thing worked wonders. The rest is RJM Mini Amp Gizmo for channel switching and everything is through an old power conditioner. I know not doing much, but everything in room is on same circuit. That hum eliminator plopped into the effects loop really worked wonders, I was blown away.
  12. Success, hum eliminator worked perfect. Going to order 20' of multicore and make a snake w/ 3 TS and 1 midi connector for the setup. Any news on the Archon? Look into the RJM Mini Amp Gizmo man, it will change your life and seems like it's worth having in the tool box.
  13. No internet power line setup here. I just ordered an ebtech hum eliminator. Will try that in the effects loop and see if that helps.
  14. No internet power line setup here. I just ordered an ebtech hum eliminator. Will try that in the effects loop and see if that helps.
  15. I don't know if I would advise this though. There are couple accounts of people using specifically the Archon + Helix ext amp and blowing the jack completely losing the ability to switch their amp. Do a Google search for it. It was those posts specifically that led me to purchase the rjm mini amp gizmo last week.

    Tube amps Gone?

I would SERIOUSLY reconsider the EON610. I know its budget friendly, but it sucks so hard! To put it lightly. Don't do it man. We play a venue thats usually always busy, its right on Lake Michigan in a very well to do area. They have EON610's as monitors.... We have come to the point that we aren't going to play there anymore unless we can setup our own PA system. Heck I pretty much don't want to play anywhere I can't setup my system, the full system, lights, band, drums, everything goes up in 30-45 minutes MAX! and smokes the venue PA systems out here. They all cheap out on the sound system and then require the band to use it..... Over my Midas and JBL system, and our own sound guy... who has well over 30 years experience running live sound and studio work? Bite me! End Rant: I've brought this up a few times in different threads. Go audition a JBL PRX715 or PRX712. You can get it for a dollar and a dream since JBL released the PRX800 series. Its a fantastic speaker at a great price and it will last. My whole FOH system is PRX700 series and they have been around the block, used daily in my studio and out twice a week on the weekends for a little over a year now. They haven't given me any grief at all, and I am NOT exaggerating when I say they're used A LOT. We've had a packed play schedule since the beginning of the year, even outside on a 96F day with direct sunlight beating down on the mains and subs. Another option is the Mackie monitors the group had when I joined up. We use the SRM450 as our stage monitors, I use no other back line than the Helix. I like the PRX715s better, but up on stage I don't have the option as thats my FOH. The SRM450s do just fine and SMOKE the eon610s.... I can't exaggerate just how much I detest listening to my patches through that thing.

    Tube amps Gone?

Different strokes for different folks. Been iaong only the helix to my PA for a little over a year. Loved it. Last week I plugged into a tube amp. I guess I didn't know I was missing it until I did it. I loved it. I bought the amp. I played better. I got in the mood better. I took it out for dinner. We had a romantic intimate evening. I don't have it ready for gigging yet. Trying to work out why the 4cm is sucking all the tone from the amp and causing a crap ton of noise in the loop. Considering returning to a full analog rig with midi switchers. Anyone have $3k I could borrow for about ... 50 years? I pretty much thought I had the helix nailed down. After a year of using only the helix and then plugging into a PRS Custom 50... Jesus it's amazing just how much I missed the feel of that tube amp and the picking dynamics that come with it. Not even an amp in the room thing. It was just awesome even when mic'd up in another room.... It all translated through the PA. Now I gotta go get the wife some flowers or something. I think she's getting jealous. I suppose I could have invited her to the dinner. But third wheel and all.
  18. Now I have a question for you: I get a ton of noise when I plug the helix into the loop on the custom 50. Power conditioner, no power conditioner, studio, living room, dining room, different cables, wireless system, no wireless system, every imaginable option. Nothing I have done has solved it regarding power. I do get additional noise if I just jump the loop it self on the lead channel, with reading on the PRS forums moving the cable around does calm this noise. Plug the helix back in. 10x worse. Tons of noise. I would have to put the amp in standby between songs if I were to take it live this way. Obviously not an option. I never experienced this when I had an hd500 + jvm410h 4cm. Do you experience this at all with your archon + helix?
  19. By the way I had to screenshot your name and send it to the band. 😂😂
  20. I have a PRS Custom 50 controlled with my helix: Picked up an RJM Mini Amp Gizmo for $110 used on ebay, was here in a couple days. Pulled apart an old midi cable end Pulled apart the cable and ends that came with the Amp Gizmo Pulled out the soldering iron (I have a 4 year old, so apparently pulling out wasn't a skill acquired until recently) Used the attached diagram to wire it up. AC-PRSCUSTOM.pdf Plugged it all in. Started hitting buttons. Solo boosts, channel switching and reverb all work perfectly. Take note of what buttons on the front of the gizmo do what. Write that down. !!!! Went into Helix Global Settings and turned OFF "MIDI PC Send" !!!!!!! - Otherwise it will override any midi instants you setup in patches. Use these and snap shots, life will be easier TRUST ME! Programmed Helix to send instant midi changes on snapshots, plugged the midi cable to amp gizmo. To program the Gizmo I did not use snapshots, just grabbed a blank patch and sent them using foot switches. I kept this extremely simple: Clean: 0 Lead: 1 Clean + Boost: 2 Lead + Boost: 3 I don't use much reverb so I didn't bother programming that. Hit switch to send message, hit buttons on the amp gizmo I took note of earlier to get the amp where I wanted it, held down "Write" button on gizmo until it flashed, and I was done. All works perfectly. I did this last week on Thursday and worked right away. Just take your time and make sure you don't screw up the wiring on the cable
  21. I setup all my patches plugged in to the PA system and have for some time now. I do just what you said. I teach and work in that room so the entire system is pretty much on 24/7 Studio Monitors tend to provide a little more in the top end, and yes, porting provides more low end. Fletcher Munson states that high and low are perceived to be much greater at high volumes then at low volumes. So with this if I accommodate for the extra low and high when using my studio monitors instead of blasting the PA system I would automatically end up accounting for the added high and low frequencies you would pick up when brought to stage levels. I am also trying to save my hearing and avoid blindly reducing the high and low frequencies because I "know" they'll be exaggerated at the higher volumes. The solutions are generally kill your hearing to dial it in or blindly reduce the frequencies. I am trying to find a middle ground. Even high fidelity ear plugs won't cut it because we're talking *perceived* volume of frequencies. Ear plugs reduce percieved volume.
  22. Hey all! I am sure this has been covered so I'll fall under the lazy poster. So I am wondering lately if I would get a more accurate representation of what I would sound like at stage volume if I use my studio monitors to build patches rather than my pa system. I don't own a dedicated frfr cabinet. I use our stage monitors live. At home I can never truly bring my pa system up to stage volume and wonder if I suffer a little because of this. Where as studio monitors are designed to give an accurate representation of audio without needing to push volume to such levels that would cause ear fatigue. Thoughts? -Studio monitors are a pair of mackies, I'll edit in model when I get up to them. -PA System: Mains: prx715 Subs: prx718xlf Board: M32r Own a driverack PA2 the sound guy decided to buy and put in my rack, but I don't have it hooked up and just use the built in crossover in the prx718's. Thanks!! I would try to test this theory myself but I am going to head out of town and dropped the system off with the sound guy. So I don't have the system here to A/B it and I just had this thought the day I dropped it off. I gave him a task. Lol He is excellent at mixing and mastering recordings in his EXTREMELY nice home studio. With thousands and thousands of dollars in software alone. I asked him if I dropped off the Midas board and the speakers if he could try to create a master mix as though he was going to put it on to a CD, BUT only using the PA speakers as monitors and the plethora of "plugins" built into the mixer.
  23. I do feel like I fall into a few categories here: The Dreamer Technical genious (I only use genious because it was used... I would say tech guy when it comes to the circles I am in. To say genious I would need to already know all the things. Would like to keep an attitude of learning to avoid "the dunning Kruger effect") Lazy, busy, new guy Ordinary Joe Agenda Guy - just because it says OCD. I think the dreamer and tech genious play hand in hand. Need to come up with the outlandish ideas before moving on to execution. 😉 Troll would be fun to pursue one day. Perhaps when an old grumpy man.
  24. On that note. "The Forum Topic Changer"- see above
  25. While I will say I miss my amp in the room sound. I did take a drive to Sweetwater and spent the day on a ton of amps. Took a couple home. Sounded awesome. There it was again. And then I decided to do the text. I put the amps in another room. Put various mics on them. Went back to the studio and ran everything through the PA system. A/B comparison of the mics vs the helix only able to hear the PA.... I ended up returning the amps. Liked the helix more. To be far - Amps I have owned: JVM 410H and C Carvin VT50 Dt50 2x112 combos, head, 212 combo Mesa Mark V 90w Mesa Roadkind v1 Blackstar Series One 1046L6 Fender rock pro 1000 (I was young, first half stack) A few other solid states. I like the helix. While that isn't a huge collection of tube amps it's enough to know the difference.
