    New toy!!!

I should say I started playing like I use to play. I don't know... I was just able to get into a groove again. I used tube amps for years, then only used the helix for a year, then back. Honestly it was most likely just the difference between hearing it through my PA vs hearing it through my amp. Especially considering I can get most of the way there running the helix into the return on my amps. I'm not trying to bash the helix by any means. I love it and it will most likely be the center of my rig for years to come. Even if I can finally complete my analog rack rig I've been wanting to building for.... 4 years maybe? Lol... I only have so far an RJM RG16 and a couple prostage boxes. The helix would stick around purely for it's midi capabilities. This isn't a dig at it. I like everything about the helix and it would make a better midi controller than anything else I've seen; not only because of the amount of storage but the simple fact that there aren't many I could find that would allow for the expression pedal and toe switch options. If like 6 came out with an "HX Midi" with the same amount of toe switches, and expression pedal options as the helix floor still using snapshot midi instant, etc... I'd be all over it in a heart beat!

    New toy!!!

It is close. Very very close. I can say I've tried a bunch of amps over the course of the past 3 years trying to replace my road king. Not that I don't like it, it's hands down my favorite amp and I've done a lot of my own custom work to it, but it's EXTREMELY heavy and I've got gigs booked clear into 2020... my back wants something smaller. This is the first one I tried that I didn't think was too mushy, too scooped or too ear piercing. It's simple to setup. Out of the gate with everything set pretty modestly (all settings at 5, treble around 3) it sat perfectly in the mix. Thomas Blug probably designed it with exactly that intention, its specifically to be a live use fly rig amp. I used the modelling in the helix straight to PA for about a year and had to go back to an amp, my playing immediately improved. I know it's supposed to sound like a mic'd cab... but I can mic my cab, put my in ears in and I like it more than the helix modeling. That's just me personally and I seriously spent that year with thousands of different eq techniques, IRs, etc... I REALLY tried and it's all I ran. The minute I plugged back into an amp I just started jamming in a way I hadn't for a year. So yeah... for me I like it. One thought I had was to try the preamp into the Amp1 and even then it would be a pretty good "tube" power amp for roughly the price of a tube power amp. But using it this way prevents me from spending more time tweaking than playing. So all in all I'm pretty happy with it.

    New toy!!!

And it's mounted! One power cable and one speaker cable and my rig is ready to roll! :)
  4. this in total came to well under $300. Gives a nice little "dog house" to hide those "plc" wires.
  5. What would be amazing is if L6 would be able to set the master volume knob to be able to send midi commands. The amp I use has a power soak feature controllable via midi. Now if I could make that completely controllable via the master volume knob??? Now we're talking!!!
  6. What I've personally done, being that it's essentially being used as a rack rig, is gone into global and basically shut off the master volume by assigning it to something I don't use. You wouldn't use a delay pedal to control your amp's volume would you? That being said I do use a Boss FV500L as exp pedal 3. Assigned to control a volume pedal at the very end of the signal chain. Set to min volume of 20% and in global settings exp pedal 3 is set to global. Sooooo... I run a volume pedal as an expression pedal to control a volume pedal. Hehe.... but... I don't have extra cables feeding the effects loop.
  7. I have to second this. Only use effects here as well. Use the helix floor. A smaller foot print would be nice but what's nicer: Never running out of dsp Scribble strips Midi instant on a bottom row of snapshots, stomps on the top row Input/output galore Everything stated in the above post

    New toy!!!

I do 4 cable method into either a PRS Custom 50 combo or a Mesa Road King combo. Use an rjm amp gizmo for channel switching. Just did first gig this past weekend with a bluguitar amp1 ME and the 1x12 fatcab. It cut through the mix wonderfully and has all the dynamics and weighs next to nothing compared to the other amps. And I didn't need my rjm amp gizmo either. That is all.
  9. And then people wonder why line 6 spends more time in thegearpage It's a waste of time here sometimes. I visit this forums constantly looking for useful threads and ideas, but it's always crap like this and repeat questions after repeat after repeat. Jesus people!

  11. You may have already done this but it doesn't hurt to check. In global settings are your sends and such set to instrument/Mic and not Line level. Line level can be too much and can cause what you're describing.
  12. Can you attach your patch? Not only would I like to see the setup, but could possibly offer some help.
  13. If line 6 made a unit that was just the screen and knobs specifically to control the helix..... Yeah, I'd spend money on that.
  14. 2.70 And yes I have the matching editor.
  15. I didn't update many times because I was stable. Decided to update. When I edit a patch and move or add anything my presets change to the point of finally loading my backups just to play the gig. Send/return block off, volume pedal off, many other pedals on or off I can't keep track of everything changing, snapshot settings returning to default. It's insane!! I run my volume pedal at the end of the chain as an overall volume, set globally in settings, to stay the same throughout a show. Imagine the look on the band mates faces when their in ear monitors are now blasting guitar and our sound guy ready to shoot me.... And I run 4cm with my mesa miced. Can anyone guess what happens when the send/return block is off during a live performance?!?
  16. I spent a while with it.... the review I gave was that it made my helix sound like an old cheap spider. At that price and a coax speaker you aren't going to get glorious. I suppose if someone's on a budget but an used PA speaker may be money better spent.
  17. An easy way to test this would be to put an obvious effect like a tremolo into the right path.
  18. Gosh I wish this and the hx effects were out before. Use only a few effects and run 4cm... have the helix floor. Guess I'm never left wanting for more though. ;)
  19. Not that it helps the topic any... But I just can't resist. Tomato tomahto would perhaps be..... nut.... knut? Lol This is more tomato potato
  20. Want sustain? Check out David Gilmours stuff, and Google write-ups on his setup. On an Island has some great solos too. A lot boils down to compression, guitar setup, where in the fret space is your finger, very slight vibrato, etc... He gets fantastic sustain without being over the top on his gain. And with bolt on necks btw ;)
  21. That's still talking about boosting the front end: tone shaping. I'm assuming he's running 4cm. And also assuming he wants the exact same tone, only louder: Everything else is going to shape the tone. For ONLY boosting the volume without CHANGING tone it's extremely simple and requires no eq, comp or boost block of any kind. 1. Pick a block, any block, that sits between the preamp and power amp (in your amps effects loop). 2. Then assign it's level parameter to a pedal and set min max, or assign to snapshots and set it at +1-3db. 3. Done and your tone will be identical to the rhythm tone only louder. While not always desired this directly and simply addresses the original inquiry. That being said.... shaping the tone so you cut through vs a pure volume boost is usually more desired, much cleaner, easier to control and will keep your sound guy happy. Is the tube screamer a good pedal for this? Maybe... there's a reason it's popular. Is it always going to sound good like all the hype? No hype is hype for a reason. The tube screamer is not a one size fits all pedal and doesn't sound good on all amps. I strongly recommend reading this article, he will cover why the tube screamer is popular and why it's not always desired. Basically you need mid range, a fender style amp has a scooped mid range, the tube screamer works great here... but a marshal style amp will add too much mid and will start to sound dark and squashed. Again... this is subjective, what you find horrible someone else could find great! In the end if you can get your leads to cut through without blowing out ear drums by boosting volume too much you won't be the butt of a guitarists play too loud joke. http://www.gilmourish.com/?p=7115
  22. Which brings us right back to the level parameter on nearly every block possible. Do the same thing... adjust the level on the delay block or the reverb block which should be at the end of the chain and be the cleanest volume boost you can add without effecting your tone.
