  1. Anyone have anything to report good, bad or otherwise about these JHV3 mods? http://www.jhv3.com/m-series-mods/ I found a used M5 on Reverb.com, a little steep on the price compared to other 'regular' used M5 units. This one claims it has some of these JHV3 mods, wasn't aware this kind of thing.. Had an M13 for a while, loved it, but it was more than I needed; was using it in the FX loop of my HD500 rig. Been messing with a Zoom pedal in that FX loop slot, but always have my eye out for interesting options.
  2. Yes, and yes - to both the mixer stand, and the 'Guinness Guard' plastic cover!
  3. Regarding the case options for the JTV59, mine fits perfectly in an Epiphone LP case http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ENLPCS
  4. And kudos to PRS for offering their 30th Anniversary custom 24 guitars in left hand models!!! http://www.sweetwater.com/store/search.php?s=prs+left&Go=Search
  5. Yes, I agree! But it might help you diagnose the souce of the problem.. Comparing the behavior when linked as opposed to using analog should be a good starting point, even if just to confirm the problem is still there when linked. The link connection sends the audio to the speaker in a different pathway than when using the analog inputs. In terms of tracking the trail of the analog to digital conversion, the signal is sent to the M20d, converted to digital, and then converted back to analog and sent back out - the M20d is fine since you tested with a different set of speakers. That analog signal hits the speaker, in some way is probably converted again. Whereas, the L6link sends a pure digital signal - all A/D and D/A conversion being handled in the M20d, none in the speaker. I hope you get it solved though, regardless! No fun when nice gear acts bad...
  6. Does it also exhibit that problem when you connect them with the Line6 link connection?
  7. He sneezed on; and he drew those little white lines on it for the setting markers; probably used it for the recordings they did of Estimated Prophet, stuff like that. If you owned a football team and collected Jerry stuff , then $7,500 sure why not! But actual value? No way!!! On a side note, the Line6 model of this effect is $7,000 less, though a bit trickier to dial in.. :) http://line6.com/support/topic/8401-tron-up-soundclip/ http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/you-can-own-one-of-jerry-garcias-mu-tron-pedals/ Same pedal was on eBay in 2013 - white marks in the same places, pretty specific setting ideas!!
  8. I typically go with Sweetwater; when I need to spread out the payments; I look for payment plan deals on AMS and ZZounds (same company - compare the serial #'s, they are selling the same guitars.. exact same company; different websites..) Anyway, I had a good experience with AMS recently; bought a sweet custom 24 PRS from them last month, on a 12 payment option. Bought my JTV59 from Zzounds last year on an 8 payment plan. Waiting for Sweetwater to ship my PRS S2 sometime in mid-May when it arrives; on 36 months no interest Sweetwater credit card.. Bought my first DT25 from Zzounds, 8 payments Bought my second DT25 from Sweetwater and an HD500x, in three payments Bought two L3m's from Zzounds, 8 payments Bought my M20d, and pair of L2t's from Sweetwater on a regular credit card. In all of that, had zero issues with quality, or any problems. It's always worth shopping around - but Sweetwater offers that two-year warranty on the gear they sell, and that makes a big difference in the value to me.. The no interest options are the best; charging stuff up on a regular credit card only works if you can pay it down right quick. Otherwise, interest just adds up quick.. But yeah; old new is not new new, and AMS should apologize and get you a proper replacement. These guitars have been around a while now, and some retailers are just eager to unload inventory they have been sitting on for too long. Price matching should NOT mean you get the beat up, dinged up 'new' guitar, that should be sold as a 'scratch and dent' - not a price match for a proper 'new' item. That's how free market works; you have a million different options for where to buy things! On a side note, check out this listing from Reverb.com for a 'used' effects pedal......For $7,500!!!! https://reverb.com/item/485022-jerry-garcia-s-mutron-3 "Jerry Garcia's Mutron 3. I bought this at an auction from Dan Healy, who was the Grateful Dead's sound engineer for over 20 years. This is a well known pedal that had features written about it and the auction in newspapers, magazines etc. I found out about the auction originally in Relix magazine. The white markings on it were written by Jerry in the studio while recording. He took a white grease pen from where they were splicing tape to mark his favorite settings. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to buy a personal item that was used often by a true music superstar. It is in working condition and sounds great. it comes with complete documentation including a hand written letter from Dan on GD stationary."
  9. Yes!! I love to sit on the couch with my strat, just picking away, making barely any sound. It's true; your fingers are your tone. Learning how to control how that tone your fingers create with amps and effects comes after.
  10. I sold my M13, but when I had it, I also used a TC Helicon voice live unit (sold that too!) and they fit near perfectly side-by-side in a case I got from Musicians Friend. Not sure if the smaller case would fit, will check the sizes. Nice case though! Brand is "Diago" If you do go for a larger than needed hard case, it gives you some room to add things like an expression pedal, velcro down the power supply, and a wireless transmitter, etc. The M13 size is: 15.5" (L) x 12" (W) x 3.5" (H) http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifiers-effects/diago-pb02-gigman-pedalboard PB02 Gigman Pedalboard Internal Width: 600mm (23-½") Internal Depth: 300mm (11-¾") Internal Height: 85mm (3-¼") http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifiers-effects/diago-pb03-showman-pedalboard PB03 Showman Pedalboard Internal Width: 750mm (29-½") Internal Depth: 350mm (13-¾") Internal Height: 100mm (4")
  11. I want to add at least one L3s sub to my band's rig! We currently have a pair of L2t's, pair of L3m, and the M20d. It's been outstanding for my needs, both with the band, and at home in my 'mini' studio. :)
  12. I went the 'easy' route; got a DT25!... I use the preamp only versions, and then use the XLR out from the back of the DT to feed the recordings / mix / etc.. Before that, I used various guitar amps, with and without FX loops; I tried running direct to various mixers, speakers, keyboard amps. But none of that worked for me when it came time to jam with my band. I struggled to be heard, and then when I was loud enough, struggled to sound good. I think the most important aspect to getting good sound with 'studio/direct' is to build your patches using the same gear you intend to amplify it with in a stage setting, and at close to what you would use for 'gig' volumes. When I play at home in 'studio/direct', I run the outputs from the HD500 to a mixer, out to a pair of L2t speakers - if I wasn't using the DT, and didn't need the L2t's for floor monitors with the band's PA, I would use those to hear myself on stage. But I just prefer the DT; it makes my tone quest way easier.. The speakers you use to amplify are crucial to how it sounds. Guitar amp, keyboard amp, full range, whatever - each offers a major difference in the perception of that "digital" sound. When I got the DT25 (1x12 combo), I started from scratch with my patches, and nearly instantly had good tone, at levels when at rehearsal, drums, bass and another guitar using a 40w Fender tweed. As in, amp model only, with zero FX, no EQ added, no comp, no noise gate - just amp model tone. Then I started adding FX to the amp models that I liked 'by themselves'.. Take a listen to the stuff Glenn DeLaune does with the HD500, that dude seems to have a knack for dialing in killer direct tones.. https://www.youtube.com/user/extremevideopro
  13. Yeah, I hear ya! The first computer my Dad bought when I was a kid was an Apple IIe, or IIc? I don't even know how much more powerful the modern computers are by comparison. Those old beasts were expensive, used both the large size 'floppy' disks, and then later the smaller 'hard shell' floppy disks. I mean, hey! Those had "64kb, with up to 1MB of memory!" :)
  14. Yeah, I have been wanting to upgrade to Kemper one of these days!! I keep checking to see if Sweetwater has the rack+foot controller in stock... Kemper is definitely "next gen" level, they blow away everything that came before, and set a new paradigm in the process. Das Kemper ist sehr gut!
  15. Currently, somewhere in the $600 - $700 range, depending on which model and finish. The Guitar Center in Naperville near me has had a used JTV59, black, for $699 for a couple months now. The guy working there at my Naperville store has a 'new' JTV69 that he said he would do a crazy deal in just to get rid of it.. That $699 seems to be some kind of 'magic' GC price, there are several in various GC stores around the US of A, in various models and finishes, all for $699.. GC in Jacksonville, FL has a used JTV69 (HSS) for $649. http://used.guitarcenter.com/usedgear/index.cfm?page=1&sort=price&dir=asc&srch&q=jtv&distance=100 Sadly, I hate to think what Gtr Centre paid the folks who sold that gear to them - usually their deal is offer you half of what they can sell it for..
  16. Better and cheaper? Usually, those two terms are not synonymous! I recall it was mentioned that the 6 screw trem on the new Variax was a bit of a downgrade from the two point trem on the JTV69.. Odd things like that; if they really wanted to pitch the new 'Variax Standard' as a guitar 'everyone' can have (I think the exact phrase is "Now Every Guitarist Can Break The Rules"), then they need the an alternate that "Not Every Guitarist Can Have, Since that's what the Standard is For"... If it came to it, not seeing an obvious incentive to go with the standard over the nearly identical priced JTV.. Personally, GAS got the best of me in March, so instead of waiting for the Standard, I bought a second DT25 combo, a used DT25 head, two DT25 1x12 extension cabs, and two PRS guitars; a US custom 24 30th, and an S2 custom 22 semi.. Go figure!! I still love my JTV59, it rocks, and I feel like it offers some amazing options I will never have with ANY 'regular' guitar, whether it costs $1600 or $38,000 or $800, or $999, or whatever. And that makes it priceless, regardless of what anyone would pay me for it if I was to sell it.. My newest wacky JTV rigging idea, is to use a wireless to send the 1/4" to my HD500, and the VDI to my HD500x. Run one linked to DT25's, the other direct to the mixer for 'full range' stuff - both acoustic, reso, but also just rockin' whatever sounds, that will sound killer paired with the DT25! My band is only a four piece, with one vocalist, so, we can do some interesting stuff like that to fill out sounds..
  17. Heck yeah! I have been slacking, way too dang busy at work - been meaning to test the new models out with my DT25..I think that is a good point - the sound of the amp, with a mic, in a room - vs the sound of just the amp - big difference.
  18. As ALWAYS, Glenn DeLaune makes Line6 gear sound fantastic!! Super excited to try out those patches, thank you!!! :) from 6:00-6:36, give or take - on FIRE!! sounds really, really good.. Not hearing bees nest or seagull flocks. Just smokin' hot tone and some pretty rippin' thumb picking
  19. Very true! Many copies, but few contenders. More XLR's going into lower quality A/D chips isn't "better".. Who has the best A/D chips? I'd like to see that comparison. For example, the quote from Don Boomer regarding the M20d AD/DA chips: "Those are very expensive Burr-Brown chips as used by some of the most expensive mixers on the planet. They are by no means cut-rate and there's no "doctoring up" necessary." Do any of the 'knock off' copycat mixers offer higher than 24bit/48k multi-track recording>? To onboard SD card, or forced to connect outboard USB equipment? I have used Behringer in the past; not sure what I think about their stuff anymore. They have stuck around, despite some really "budget" type mixers and random gear. How do their "Midas" preamps hold up against Line6, or Mackie, or any of the other contendors? http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/XR18 Behringer XR18 X AirX Air Series 18-Channel, 12-Bus StageBox/Rackmount Digital Mixer for iPad/Android Tablets with 16 Programmable Midas Preamps, Integrated Wi-Fi Module, Multi-Channel USB Audio Interface, and Rackmount Ears The notion of consumer confidence is definitely a sticky wicket. It does what it does; unfortunately, whether it can do more in the future for free or for pay, that's to be determined. That notion is very specific to items which can be updated with a computer / firmware / software. For example, if I had purchased an analog mixer, I wouldn't be concerned with what it can or can't do beyond what it offered when I bought it. When Apple or Windows makes a new operating system, it's not free.. But the updates to your existing system *are* free. I suppose between those two points is where Line6 sits. I buy it for what it is today, right now. Hoping for it to be more than it is, we are often rewarded by companies like Line6 that do update their products. Granted the M20d hasn't seen updates recently. Quite frankly, if anyone knows the answers we seek, it's Don Boomer!! But I doubt he is allowed to say anything. Don't want Mackie / Berhringer / PreSonus / etc copying those ideas before they're implemented! Kinda like when those two copy cat movies come out - like "Whitehouse Down" and "Olympus Has Fallen". Who had the first idea? Who copied whom? And ultimately, which movie was better? Did Gerard Butler kick more a$$ than Channing Tatum? Was Jamie Fox the better pretend US President? We'll never know... Both movies were terrible actually, but that's not the point.. For example, I see QSC, Behringer, Mackie, PreSonus, and various other companies making similar "knock off" stuff.. Is their quality level comparable to Line6?> Is it better? Sure, it's a copy or inspired by Line6, but does it surpass Line6's M20d - in more than just adding inputs or built in wifi, or talkback mic or any other feature that was cherry picked to specifically be offered in competing options. Which features matter most to the person buying the gear? That is the question marketing teams lose sleep over :) There will always be something better, something newer, something more expensive, and something cheaper. There will always be something else... I mean, check this out!!!!! It's *only* $23,000.... http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/M5000 Roland M-5000 Digital Mixing Console with Up to 128 Channels, 28 Faders, 12" Touch Screen Display, and 24-bit/96kHz Resolution
  20. If I were Line6, I would repair or replace your mixer regardless of the warranty period, especially given the nature of the previous problems you had. Open a service ticket, see how they respond. If you don't get a favorable response, report back here so other people know to steer clear. If you do get the support I would expect Line6 to extend, report that back as well. Good luck! I hate to hear things like this, but people need to know what they are working with..
  21. There are *extensive* threads on the subject of tube choice. I don't know enough on the technical specifics; but I know a Line6 employee weighed in on those threads, and specifically said "Only Use EH Tubes".... For what it's worth, I had put JJ's in my two DT25's, then shortly after ended up swapping them back out for EH tubes.. I felt like an idiot, but didn't want to risk non-EH tubes causing me problems. Though, the 12AX7 does something different on the DT25 than it does on the DT50; I think the two (stock) 12AX7 tubes in the DT50's are also EH brand; they use some Chinese tubes for the single 12AX7 in the DT25. http://line6.com/support/topic/2998-is-it-a-tube-problem/?hl=tubes&do=findComment&comment=83528 http://line6.com/support/topic/12006-dt-tubes-is-there-only-one-choice/?hl=tubes response from Partev Sarkissian (Line6 tech): Sent 13 February 2015 - 10:33 AM Because of the way Bogner designs the tube portions of these amps, and that this is a hybrid and not the usual bill-of-fare tube amp, you should re-tube using the specified EH from Electro-Harmonix tubes. You can't use the EH bias spec on other tubes. The spec is dialed in for the EH's. All too often these come across our bench for no other reason than having non-specified tube inside (JJ's, Mesa, Groove Tube), using the specified bias. That does not work. They (JJ's, Mesa, Groove Tube) would have to be bias slightly different, because the characteristic curves from one to the other are not exact. That little of difference, makes all the difference. I've seen too many blown amps just because of that. It's a hybrid and a hot rod, don't mess with it. Stick with the specified EH's. 22. More than it seems, less than most of us paid.. I have a JTV59, slightly different, since the strat style is taking the direct hit from the yet to be available 'standard'.. does seem like stock liquidation. weird prices imply, not sure. A side note, L6 could take a page from the PRS book: "All SE products that are shipped in the USA are individually inspected and play tested at PRS's Maryland facility before shipping to dealers." The PRS SE guitars are made in the same factory by the same people who make the JTV guitars...... I still maintain a Line6 PRS Variax would be AWESOME
  23. Here's how to think about it, if you will use it L6linked with the HD500x, you don't even need to update the DT firmware, the 500x does the amps and tells the DT which typology to pair, per how you program the presets. In standalone, sans POD 500x, then you use MIDI to reconfigure the DT
  24. And, in terms of gig disaster prep, setting up the DT to be a backup if something goes wrong with the POD, is akin to setting up your live studio direct patches if something goes wrong with the DT!
