A little early this week since I will be tied up tomorrow. I made a few IR's for those who don't have the Ownhammer ones in sminchk67's Purple Rain video and preset. You should request the preset from him if you haven't already. I love the use of expression pedal to gain up path 2 for the lead. http://line6.com/support/topic/20013-freeset-friday-purple-rain/ Amplitube didn't have the exact cabs, speakers, and mics in Scott's OH IR's, so I made some close approximations. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ryl5xai5egbzljb/AADABDFcag6WEXEhTR6P-kToa?dl=0 Path 1 - OH 212 VX30 BLU+M55 121-05, replace with VX30 BLU-GB 121-421 Path 2 - 410 SPRVRB CTS+C10 70-F, replace with BM410 CTS D57-121 or FT212 CTS-C12 D57-121 I also wrapped up what I think are my best REAL Recto amp and Recto 212 cab IR's to date. They closely matched my real amp in (bed)room sound, as well as the recorded SM57 sound. The SM57 is about 1-2" off of the cap, off axis into the cone. I would still High Cut to around 7000 Hz unless you would like them to shave your face ;) https://www.dropbox.com/sh/h5ky6jrpmb6blfs/AACgZuRfOPpN-NtrRsmolUVia?dl=0 MesRec212AmpNeutral - neutral Recto power amp MesRec212AmpNorm - normal balanced Recto preamp MesRec212AmpDeep - deeper sounding Recto preamp MesRec212AmpBright - brighter sounding Recto preamp MesRec212_2ioaD_6L6 - Mesa 290 power amp MesRec212_2ioaD_EL34 - Mesa Stiletto EL34 power amp Link to root IR folder with all IR's https://www.dropbox.com/sh/lstuzn05tdpin9v/AADjdknZwdrze5VqaO7whHroa?dl=0 Have a great weekend all!

Cool patch. A lot of thought and functionality put into this one. Nice to not have to switch presets to get acoustic sim.

Awesome. Thanks for posting. Can't wait to try it.

Here are a few of the real Recto amp and Recto 212 cab IR from today's efforts. These are my personal favorites out of everything I have done so far. Updated Files...I had grabbed the wrong ones earlier. MesRec212AmpNorm.wav MesRec212AmpBright.wav MesRec212AmpDeep.wav MesRec212AmpNeutral.wav

With all of the message boarding and tone chasing...I spent a couple of hours today soul searching and revisiting my physical Mesa Recto amp through my Recto 212 to settle what it was that I thought I was missing. I mic'd up the cab with an SM57 and moved the mic around different positions, angles and distances until I had what I perceived to be the best headphone and recorded sound that was matching my amp in the room sound without headphones. To closely match amp-in-room in this particular room in my house, the mic was about 1" from the cap edge, off axis into the cone. I then proceeded to take an IR of the setup. I put that IR back into Helix with the Cali Rectifire amp model made some minor adjustments on the amp model. Voila! It was soooo close to my real amp in room sound. The sound was thick, deep, and ballsy. Now what actually sounded even better, albeit not true amp-in-room sound, was putting the Helix HX Cali 412 in parallel with the new IR. I have tried all HX cabs, mic types, and positions, dual HX cabs, other IR's, etc. But the IR + HX Cab to me is the best sounding option so far...at the expense of processing power I'm sure. Anyway, for me now, I'm starting appreciate the value of Amp Matching, Tone Matching, Profiling, etc. of Fractal, Bias, and Kemper even though I don't own one. It seems you get 90% of the way there with preset hardware models, then finish up with a matching process to your / a physical amplifier/cab. I'm still not compelled to change from Helix as it does so many things so well and fits nicely into my rig and workflows. Native IR capture and matching would be less than 5% of the overall value to me. I've seen and voted on similar amp/tone matching requests and IR utilities for Helix in IdeaScale. Maybe some of these will be future features to keep with the competition.

To me, it's as much about the underlying technology, IR's, and functionality as the appearance and UI. I mean, AT4 actually looks a lot like Pod Farm to me on the surface. In AT4 I just grab left, right, or room mics and quickly drag them around in 3D space. I can quickly mix and match speaker types in a cab. I can change the cab dimensions. I can use an intuitive mixer for all the mics and overall input and output levels on the same screen. There is even some intuitive reverb offered by the room type and room mic distances. Now I couldn't tell you precisely how authentic these virtual actions are to the physical world, but they are close, intuitive, and make noticeable differences in the tones. Now under the hood, this AT functionality may be a mix of individual IR's, IR mixing, and algorithms. But for the user at the UI level, it is very intuitive, efficient, and straightforward. I think the Helix HX cabs are great. There are just a few functions and options that AT Cab Room and 3rd Party IR's have that Helix doesn't. Fundamentally, what I am asking for would probably result in L6 making many, many more IR's for each cab for both mic distance across the speaker as well as from the face, mic angle (at least an off-axis option), for each mic, not to mention mix/match of different speaker types in the same cab. I'm not sure what kind of space/processing impact this would have in the hardware. This is why I am proposing putting this at the computer level and importing the custom cabs to the hardware. Who knows, they may already be doing some of this as it makes sense to them and their product roadmap. Regardless, I am greatly enjoying Helix in its current state. With the current functionality Helix offers and 3rd party IR's, DIY IR's, or software plug in's, I am able to get just about anything I want. I feel no need to look at any other hardware manufacturer. I just wanted to throw out some options and functionality that, in my mind, would put them ahead of the other hardware and IR competition.

I would really, really, REALLY like to see Line 6 develop something for computer like the Amplitube Cab Room with an intuitive graphical interface and maybe more custom tweaker options than in the Helix hardware. I don't think we need EVERY possible configuration/IR file in the Helix hardware, but maybe we could use more options at the computer level to fill the gap between current Helix HX Cabs and custom IR's. Helix hardware could keep a basic set of the most important controls for live use. Also, maybe a set of factory HX cabs stays, but we would have space for user HX cabs. Most importantly, the custom HX cabs we configure and audition with Helix and PC should sound exactly the same and function like an HX cab. With all of my experimenting, one of the workflows I absolutely love is auditioning Helix amps through the Amplitube Cab Room. It is SO efficient and intuitive to graphically visualize cab type, speaker type, mic's and placement, dual cabs, etc. while playing guitar, running a loop, etc. through headphones, studio monitors, live tube rig, etc. Unfortunately, the IR's I capture from those configurations are slightly different sounding than they were in AT4 form...sometimes better, sometimes worse, but different. I generally get in the ballpark, then rip 10-20 IR's out to get 4 or so ones I like. I really think the Helix cabs are more consistent and controllable than IR's...probably by design. I also think Helix HX cabs are better quality than Amplitube cabs, but I can more quickly, easily, and enjoyably get to the tones in my head using Helix amps and the Amplitube Cab Room (pre-IR). There are things in AT that I can do that make a huge difference in tone that I cant do in Helix. We know there are infinite options with IR's (cab, speaker, mic, position, amp type for creation, room, etc.) resulting in thousands of possible IR files, which I believe many of us, including myself, do not want to deal with at the file level. I think we are also realizing that cab models (Helix, Amplitube, etc.) are essentially IR's. A slick computer UI would tie it all together and put a bow on it for me.

Amplitube had a Marshall 1936 2x12 model. I put Celestion G12K-100 speakers in it. I did two series, one with a 121 ribbon "R" and 87 condenser "C" mics and one with 57 dynamic "D" and 87 condenser "C" mics, with 3 positions each. 0, 1, & 2 inches from the center cap. No tube power amp influence on them to keep them close to solid state as possible. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/k5jkjf4pqtklmnp/AAC60I9dUilAsO2E8DQzWbJXa?dl=0 I think these two may sound closest to your real cab. Mar212_G12K100_0iDC.wav Mar212_G12K100_1iDC.wav The other ones get progressively darker, but you may like them over headphones.

I replied back to your original post with a couple of questions about your live rig.
-
I may be able to get an IR together for you for patch setup that sounds similar to your live rig. What "clean power amp" are you using? Tube or solid state? Brand/model? Is your Marshall cab 4x12? Do you know the model number? Do you know what brand/model speakers are inside?

Ok, so since I have been capturing both software, hardware, and hybrid IR's, I decided to bring it back home to Helix and do a little experiment. Attached is an IR of a Helix HX Cab Cali 412, 57 Dynamic, 1" Distance re-amped with my real Recto. An interesting workflow may be to get a preset with the Helix HX cab(s) 90% of the way there, then get an IR of the cab(s) re-amped with the similar style real tube amp. Might be able to replace dual/two cab blocks with a single IR. I'll need to test that. I may post some other Marshall 800 and Plexi styles for Thursday. Recto_Cali412_1i57_hx.wav

I know it's not Thursday, but would any of you guys jammin' on your Helixes this weekend take these 2 IR's for a spin and give me some feedback? This is the first time I have gotten Helix-usable real IR's. This was huge for me because I failed miserably on the first attempt a few weeks ago. MesRec212_2ioaD_6L6.wav - Mesa Recto 212 V30's, SM57 2in from center/off axis, Mesa Simul 290 power amp w/ 6L6 tubes MesRec212_2ioaD_EL34.wav - Mesa Recto 212 V30's, SM57 2in from center/off axis, Mesa Stiletto Deuce II power amp w/ EL34 tubes Helix IR block High Cut between 5,000Hz-10,000Hz sounds pretty good to me. I've tried both of these with Helix Amp blocks as well as Preamp-only blocks, and I think they work pretty well in both. Up until now (v3), I had only successfully made IR's straight from Amplitube cabs, then the real Mesa amps into Amplitube cabs. Good practice, but I wanted to do the full real thing. Link to v3 real IR's https://www.dropbox.com/sh/h5ky6jrpmb6blfs/AACgZuRfOPpN-NtrRsmolUVia?dl=0 Link to root IR folder with all IR versions and methods https://www.dropbox.com/sh/lstuzn05tdpin9v/AADjdknZwdrze5VqaO7whHroa?dl=0 PS: The IR's were captured with Helix. Thanks for the flexible IO Line 6! It's a very efficient workflow to setup presets for capture, test, and compare all in the solution for which you are making the IR's! It really helps me to quickly test and compare IR's, and iterate through minor physical adjustments on all of the variables and special sauces :) I love foot edit mode for toggling through IR's so I can quickly pick the best ones.

No prob. Do you have or have you ever tried the RJM amp gizmos? Used ones are pretty reasonable. I actually prefer mine over the Helix switch...and no hum. I had it before Helix though.

I've been following some of your posts. Sorry about all the issues you had with it. I'd be happy to whip up a custom IR for you to try. Is there a specific sound or feel you were trying to nail that you couldn't quite get there with Helix? Maybe I can get you closer to the Fractal Axe vibe. Heck, I'm sure you could use the IR in the Fractal Axe even if you did sell your Helix. Here are the ones I have done so far. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/lstuzn05tdpin9v/AADjdknZwdrze5VqaO7whHroa?dl=0

Opening up this thread for your ideas for the Thursday IR's I post. Post an idea yourself or vote for someone else's idea by using Quote and typing +1 anywhere below it. You can use quote and comment in the regular manner too since I will only be searching for the "+1". I will be listing each week's IR pack along with its status. Here is a link to my shared Dropbox IR root folder so you can browse IR that are already posted https://www.dropbox.com/sh/lstuzn05tdpin9v/AADjdknZwdrze5VqaO7whHroa?dl=0 Complete - Thurs 4/21/2016 - njglover - Orange PPC212OB https://www.dropbox....e PPC212OB?dl=0

Made a second pass at IR'ing your new AT4 preset and tested with your Helix preset. More than welcome. Glad you guys like them. I really believe in Line 6 and Helix and want it to succeed. If kicking out a few free IR's fills the gap until Line 6 has a chance to process the HX cab user feedback and requests, then I'm glad to do it. One user suggested maybe I start a business site. While I REALLY appreciated the thought, I don't think IR's are a long term solution. I believe Line 6 can do better than straight IR files. This is a reason that I really don't want to get into the IR business...that and the gear required to do Ownhammer quality is astronomical. It's fun and gratifying that you guys are getting some use out of them and enjoying your Helixes.

Open letter to Line 6 - Please future-proof our Helix patches!

It would be cool if patch upgrades worked sort of like file upgrades with software or cross-platform model imports from 3D modelling applications or databases/schemas. Even if all of the amps and effects in a patch didn't map, maybe there could be a way for the user to specify the replacement new block or none. I've seen Autodesk software have cross platform mapping interfaces to setup before importing one platform model into another platform. Basically two columns with drop downs for each component type from each platform. The user can accept default mapping, make a selection if there is no default, or change the default. Maybe during an import you could specify the desired mapping file and check a box next to the presets to import. -
Great info and thoughts mikisb! I need to pull out the eleven rack again and play through only a cab and mess with the speaker breakup. Heck, I will probably IR the Eleven Rack cabs just for learning and concept development. I'll post em up if anyone else is curious. I'll do some more research and experimenting with speaker breakup. I like your idea about IR'ing really pushed, possibly power amp distorted speakers. Trying to get my hands on a good real ribbon mic too so I can do more real cab IRs.

Yeah, I couldn't get the Helix HX Cabs to breakup or distort when playing through only a cab block. You should try it sometime if you're curious. Eleven Rack is the only think i have ever seen with speaker breakup, but I'm not sure if it authentic speaker breakup or a distortion type effect. Sounds cool and makes a difference. I think Eleven Rack was ahead of it's time and processor technology. It's still a good piece of gear and a solid, stable interface.
