Praise for the JTV59!
Indianrock2020 replied to jasonk931's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
My 59 is growing on me also. Use it with and HD500x at church. I'm still trying to pin down the locking tuners that are a drop in fit with no drilling. I don't care what they cost. I think this is it: Schaller M6 2900 3x3 -
Make Your Variax Sound 100% Better
Indianrock2020 replied to katiekerry's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I suspect that Workbench HD could overcome some of the "oddities" with a JTV, but the manual is brief and I'm not finding detailed videos about it on YouTube. May just have to devote several hours to experimentation. Although the guitar plays very well and I'm finding some advantages to the neck over my Strat with a Warmoth compound radius neck, a good fret dressing by a pro might help since the intonation etc is more critical with the modeling going on ( I believe ). -
Make Your Variax Sound 100% Better
Indianrock2020 replied to katiekerry's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I've noticed one thing happens only when I have my powered speaker turned too low at home. With the modeling putting out sounds higher than the actual guitar tuning ( virtual capo ), you can hear the lower tones directly from the strings, which are obviously going to clash with the higher key coming out of the amp. Overall I'm very happy with the guitar and it's capabilities. There will be the occasional oddity, but on the other hand I don't have to use a capo or buy 10 different guitars. It's a compromise. -
I've never had much problem with rust or corrosion on string but I do wipe them down a lot. What I've started doing on my JTV59 is use some good masking tape to hold the end of the string in the bridge while I run it through the tuner and tighten it up. I still want to get locking tuners, but in the mean time this helps quite a bit

Nut cut too deep on new jtv59

Nice video. I see he used a 10mm nut driver on the tuner nuts. Is that the size for the JTV's ? -

Well so much for needing a new nut. Sounds like stretching and maybe some lube are in order. -

I've never really done string-stretching. Just assumed that after a week of normal play and bending it would be settled in, and that's the case on my Strat and Carvin. Not with the JTV59 Anyway a new, possibly better nut and a neck setup can't hurt. Might also pick up some nut lube. -

Ha, you remember me. Yes I am absolutely taking the guitar to a local recommended Luther since this work isn't variax-specific. Graphtec lubricating nut -

How does that nut handle bends, as far as tuning stability. Had you also read that the strings should not be buried in the nut? -

What type of nut would you suggest? Ball park to have it done? $$ -
With moderate bending, my G and B strings go out of tune quite often. The strings have only been on the guitar about two weeks. I read that your strings should only be half buried in the nut, with about half of the string above the nut. This is true and my low E and A strings only. The troublesome strings seem to be way down in the nut. I have done some lubrication D'Addario EXL115-3D Nickel Wound Electric Guitar Strings Medium/Blues-Jazz Rock, 11-49

Won't get fooled again
Indianrock2020 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Yes I go to channel volume and mixer first for these problems. I'm leery of the raising the mixer too high due to clipping noises I've encountered. I've tried things like a mid focus eq at the end of the chain but it can be tricky to get it to boost without coloring things. I don't usually use the Fx loop so not sure what you're referring to there. The red comp has, for good or bad, become my go-to compressor and is always second in line, with noise gate first. I can usually boost the compressor up towards 70% but with it lying before the amps, it will affect drive. Never heard of putting a compressor after the amp. ? -
Anyone tried the JTV Rbilly Gretch 6120 along with a Tweed Bassman POD amp? This is supposed to be Pete Townsend's rig on Won't Get Fooled Again. The few times I've tried various Fender amps in the pod i couldn't get much volume out of them.

I've noticed that if I put a variax model in my Hd500x patch and do a custom tuning like each string +2 semitones, sometimes it works and other days I get strange sounds almost like a six string model thinks it's a 12-string model. Going to another setlist or restarting the POD seems to fix it. Electric guitar models seem to do better with these "forced" custom tunings, except for 12 string models like the Chime. For 12 string models I seem to be better off using a capo.

over here: http://line6.com/customtone/profile/eudoxia/ The hbe files loaded into HD Edit with no problems. On Brown Sugar try putting the tape echo near the end of the patch, after the mixer. Also on that one try the amp BASS down closer to 15% if you're going to play with a band.

Tips On Getting Acoustic Sounds
Indianrock2020 replied to phil_m's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Another example of great acoustic tones ( link below ). In my case something is happening between headphones and either powered speaker at home or direct to mixer/PA. Headphones out of the POD may be getting stereo, which of course will add a lot to the "richness." And in a bedroom one tends to not turn a powered speaker up very high -- mine is an Alto TS112A and if it's like guitar amps, you don't get the intended sound at very low volumes since the speaker was designed for more. I should probably be using the "contour" switch to add some low end from that speaker at lower volumes. Dominik Hardy -

Yeah jazz is like a sniper who intentionally misses the target ( melody and beat ). But then I think jazz players are really aliens anyway. -
Tips On Getting Acoustic Sounds
Indianrock2020 replied to phil_m's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Thanks. Well I'm definitely running my JTV59 through my POD 500x but on acoustic guitar models using just compressor, some Hall reverb and optionally a parametric EQ, no amp or cabinet models. Still doesn't sound as good as yours -- of course I'm comparing what I hear either from my powered speaker at home or in-ear monitors at church ( which is sort of direct ) . Oh and I recently bought the TC electronics VoiceTone Harmony GXT and liking it very much. The only thing is now that I have a JTV and use only the VDI cable, one I bought separately, to use the voice pedal I have to put an effects loop effect in the POD patch so I can have the 1/4 inch cables running to and from the voice pedal. We had a band rehearsal last night at church and with five footswitch presses I went from Rickenbacker 12 string through amp models on the first song, to stratocaster model through amps, to acoustic six string, back to the rick, and finally to a Tele neck pickup model. As we ended, I just had to kick on a ZZ top patch which uses the JTV Lester 2 ( les paul ) model through the POD "Purge" amp from the metal pack. Pretty darned impressive technology. -

Awesome tracks guy !! You've got to tell me how you're getting those acoustic tones, please. So you're not going through a POD? Are you doing anything with the acoustic model in workbench? JTV59? or ? -
JTV59 nut depth
Indianrock2020 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I have the relief and action close to most specs and where I'm happy with it --- except for some fret rattle on the low E in the 5th-9th fret area. All I know to do now is take it to an expert and see if I'm missing something or if the brand new frets need a little dressing. -
I was just watching a youtube video where the tech suggested that on the 3 low strings, about 1/3 of the string diameter should stick up above the nut ( in other words, string not buried in the nut slot ). Do you agree with that? My 59 is 3 weeks old and the 11 - 49s I'm using don't stick out at all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYO23rGO_7M

Variax Modeling Plus mags
Indianrock2020 posted a topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I'd like to try out the combinations of models and magnetic pickups, but really like my global setup as it is: Input 1: variax Input 2: variax And don't want to have to set this patch by patch. I suppose the biggest investment in time would be for existing patches since I'm only creating a couple of new ones per week usually.
