Can I get this foam or sponge?
cruisinon2 replied to leemh's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Wow. Some days I just don't have the strength... -
What, no kazoo? ;)

That assumes that there is one universal cause. The fact that different remedies work on some guitars and not others (or no relief at all in some cases), is pretty much all the evidence you need to determine that it's not one solitary "defect". If that were the case, it would have been solved a long time ago....if for no other reason than to shut us all up. Easily solved problems get fixed, because it's cheap and easy. Complicated problems with numerous contributing factors that may or may not be relevant from one user to the next, tend not to get fixed. Why? Because it gets expensive, is invariably a pain in the a$$, and since any one "cure" is not going to help all the affected customers anyway...you do the math. The epiphany that everyone is waiting for, ain't coming. No one is ever gonna be heard screaming: "Holy sh*t, Bob! It's part 312B! If we just color it blue the plink disappears!", from the bowels of their R&D department.

L6 is notorious for not telling anyone what time it is, let alone what is or isn't forthcoming in future firmware updates...they like surprises.

There's just one problem with that...there is no solution. That's why this thread had lasted 2 1/2 years. There have been numerous jury-rigged "fixes" proposed...dampening the strings behind the nut and/or behind the bridge saddles, filing material off of the bridge saddles themselves, wrapping the ball end of the strings with one material or another. And my personal favorite from an "official" source: "raise the action by a few tenths of a millimeter". For the guitars that suffer from this the worst, "plink" isn't even a good enough description. It's a "screech"...and all of the above "fixes" accomplish little, or nothing in those cases. A mild example might be remedied by any or all of these, but unfortunately the end user is left to perform various different minor surgeries in an effort to find out what MIGHT work on that particular guitar. Sucks, but it is what it is...

The answer to this one is very simple. If you're not getting the tone you want with a given combination of amp, cab, and mic models, then no...it's not the right choice. You gotta give up on trying to reproduce tones by mimicking someone else's set-up. You can try forever, and never get there. You don't have the same rig, guitar, or fingers. Just because you think a particular amp model "should" give you the sound you want, because someone else used it to get a tone that you like, doesn't mean that it will work for you. Try others. Try different cabs and mics. Use some EQ. Try a different guitar. Experimenting is the ONLY way to get what you want. And then throw it all out the window, because when you drop that tone into a mix with other instruments, it's not gonna sound the same anyway, and more tweaking is almost inevitable....it's an arduous process sometimes.

Everybody got that? If you think your tuner works, then clearly you suck. Now where'd I put that Mel Bay lesson book?
-
Stand by to be ear-shamed...I mean really, how do you KNOW that your ears are working with that ancient gadget anyway? Without flashing lights, how can you be sure? ;) Clearly you need a "serious" tuner...ooh, I have an idea! Let's debate what exactly makes a tuner "serious"...who wants to go first? UGH.

JTV is the problem then...sounds like the VDI connection in particular, if you're getting sound through the 1/4". Supposedly connecting both the same time can damage the circuitry, though. It's been mentioned by the powers that be more than once...so you probably don't want to run that way for any length of time. Reasonable for troubleshooting, though. Service ticket time, good luck.

Ordinarily I'd say check the input settings, make sure input 1 is set to "Variax". But if the 700 works, it would seem like the issue is the JTV, rather than the POD.

You're right, I forgot Loverboy...my apologies! ;)

Well I haven't even listened to it, but given the title of the thread, there are basically 4 options: Rush, Triumph, Celine Dion, or Justin Bieber...;)

There are a bunch of audio clips in an epic-length thread titled "Do you have the same problem with the 6th string?" There are a whole host of factors that contribute to the plink...the amount of gain, technique, the individual piezos in question, just to name a few. That's why it seems to affect some guitars and not others. That 75% "trick" is anything but a guarantee...the instruments that are affected the worst aren't helped at all by lowering the string volumes. You either get a good one, or you don't.

Someone help a guy out trying to achieve djent tone!!!!!

Not entirely sure why this was directed to me...I'm well acquainted with the patch creation process, and have no trouble getting the tones I'm after. I was merely echoing the sentiment of another post, that the tone in the video posted above is about as pleasant as listening to a castrated yodeler. Djent-on, gents! ;) -
Yup...and I don't see that changing much, either. Most players (even good ones) have a very narrow focus in terms of genre, and the typical tone(s) associated with that style. There are precious few players who can capably transition from country to funk to death metal, and have a gig that actually requires it. Thus, there will always be a limited audience for these guitars.

Leave it all on, kilowatts be damned!!! I also like to have the heat and A/C duke it out in the summer, just for sh*ts 'n' giggles...and I'm considering hiring someone to stand in the bathroom to constantly flush the toilet. ;)

Don't worry...eventually the gov't will start sneaking lithium, or some other mood stabilizer into the water, just like fluoride. Obey everyone, obey....;)

You're not alone...I don't get it either. -
Unreasonable? Frankly, yes...a bit. Most guitar players don't know that theses things even exist. They sit around for years sometimes...guys are still buying "new" guitars with production dates from 3 or 4 years ago. They've already got 3 JTV models, plus the Standard. Tooling up production for a model of every body style out there makes no financial sense for such a niche product. They'd sit around forever. For every guy out there playing a 335 every day, there are a thousand with Strats and LP's... As for the the guitar playing world at large getting more mileage out of a nylon string model than the banjo...a ton of country players would likely disagree. Good or bad, there are more weekend warriors out there churning out bad renditions of Brad Paisley tunes to drunken Friday night revelers, than there are guys looking to sound like Andrés Segovia.

I try...;)ðŸ‘

You're searching for a magic bullet that doesn't exist. The guitar is what it is, and the tuner is what it is. There's no mysterious setting or secret handshake that will make the symptoms you've described go away. I've tuned the JTV in bars and clubs as noisy as they come. Assuming that your not standing behind a full-throttled F-18, nothing in your environment is gonna rattle a solid body guitar (acoustic or semi-hollow, under the most extreme ear-drum shattering conditions...MAYBE) to such an extent that it's screwing with the POD's onboard tuner...if that's what was happening, PhD's from Cal Tech would be showing up at your gigs, setting up seismographs, and telling everyone to flee... Buy the clip-on...problem solved.

Probably OK unless you have: 1) Kids. 2) A dog. or 3) You're spastic...;)
