hi, I'm not sure if this is the right section since it says "JTV" but I'll ask my questions about Variax guitars I'm a HD500 owner who plays Blacktop Fender Jaguar for pleasure. I always connect hd500 to my computer with usb and guitar to guitar in. I use Sony MDR 7506 Monitor Headphones for creating new tones. (I have a few little tone problems with this rig which I'm not sure about the source. it may be the guitar, pod HD or my lack of understanding about tone building) I'm not professional but I want to record my guitar every now and then. I've never had a single coil guitar before and lately I was thinking about getting a cheap Squier; but I've come across this second hand Variax 300 guitar for 300$ and first I thought it would be great to have a Variax with my HD500. Then I realized that this is a fairly old model plus it needs batteries to work. I really don't want to replace batteries all the time. (I'm aware there is another solution with external plug but still a pain in the lollipop.) so please give me your opinions: is this old guitar worth the money for the modeling with my hd500? is hardware likely to fail in short term? is modelling very different(in quality) than the newer models? Should I better look for newer models? (but actually I can't because I won't have 1000$ in short time.) is it better for me to get a cheap Squier Bullet Strat than this old Variax? pls keep in mind that I'm not professional, I want to have strat, tele, les paul style guitars in long term. thank you

Please try to recognize the better ones or worse between them and patiently listen to blind test then watch the answers if you like. I appreciate if you comment on these here. Here's the blind test: Here's the video response with the answers: I personally think the sound quality is not changing too much in that video. all of them are digital processors... but I prefer more like a tone lab kind of modeling and zoom g5 kind of pedal design. yes distortion, overdrive pedals and distortion amps are causing this. but why do we need pod HD if we can't use these features properly?

mac? or PC? which program do you use? there is no sound with 1/4 outs too? or only usb? if only usb you could especially check your audio interface

I have hd500 also black top fender jaguar I use hd500 direct(via usb) with macbook pro retina>garageband today when I finally started to make my own tone I started with amps. clean and fat sound is great. then I tried distortions, noise gates, EQ, reverb etc... everything was fine. after a while I tried to turn off and turn on the distortion to see the difference but suddenly tone got ugly/muddy. I was just jamming on my own. Didn't touch anything else. Then I realized noise gate does this for a reason. did I fry something? this isn't normal right?
