String 6 Buzzes Badly
McLenison replied to BobGreaves's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Bob, I have the JTV-89 and when I got it a few months ago my low E string had a high pitch "twack" (for lack of a better term) while all other strings rang out fine. A combination of EQ, raising the action and heavier gauge (11's with wound 3rd) got rid of it. Not sure if this approaches your specific distortion problem. -
Exactly the ones I use for a better acoustic "feel" with the wound 3rd.

I haven't used Workbench HD yet because I seem to recall one user having a global anomaly after just one use, but I don't remember the specifics. I want to embark on tweaking the Rick 12 setting in WB-HD. I want to adjust the stock settings to get it closer to my real Rick 12. Question: Was the originally reported anomaly related to specifically tweaking the 12 string models or converting 6 string guitars to 12 string? Again, I seem to recall it did, but just need confirmation. I'm apprehensive and inclined to leave well enough alone.

Battery Charging Time
McLenison replied to spmartin's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
That's about the right time frame. The instructions I received said something to the effect that you should charge it about an hour longer because when it shows it is fully charged, it is really only about 95 percent charged. -
2.0 Semi Hollow Tones?
McLenison replied to fr0sty's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I use the middle position rockabilly. Nice "sparkle" to it. -
I use the Zoom A-2 (probably replaced by the A-3). For Variax acoustic sounds, I do not layer the A-2 acoustic modeling. I don't like the way they sound together. All the other built in effects sound great, though. It's a good unit to have in case your battery on the Variax dies, you can use it's magnetic pickups and get a decent acoustic-modeled sound as a backup. I use the Variax with a PA system, not a guitar amp.

My Jtv Hd 2.0 Experience/ Ordeal
McLenison replied to johnnyayyy's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
#5 Klack: I heard it initially and changed to 11's, adjusted the neck, raised the bridge and tweaked the (Zoom A2) EQ. That worked (that is, if it's the same klack you speak of). A possible option to tighten up tolerances may be to coat floppy piezos or slots with superglue or nail polish. Just my 2 pence. -
Has anyone done a factory reset for restoration of all default alternate tunings? I tried according to the online manual to no avail. The manual seems to target the 59 & 69 models. Nothing lights up when holding in the model knob and plugging in the cable as directed. I tried this twice, once with the power supply kit as well as with a battery.

Please Try This Little "experiment"
McLenison replied to McLenison's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I think someone mentioned the "clipping" on this forum. Not sure if it was resolved. You may want to submit a ticket or call their support staff. Let me know if you hear the clash on the D string too as described above in the thread. -
Post Your "wishlist" For The Next Update!
McLenison replied to McLenison's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
How about a "treble-bleed" feature for the volume control. For those unfamiliar with the term, it means that as you turn down the volume on a modeled instrument, the tone does not alter. -

I noticed with the D string tuned down to C that striking the "9th" fret, then open gives a prominent clash. If you try it and press lightly on the D string behind the nut (toward the headstock), the you'll hear the clash abruptly disappear as the pitch raises. -

Better with the HD update, but still only half-way there. I'd rate it as "adequate". -

Update: I notice that it DOES affect 6 string models and sitar when using alternate tunings or virtual capo's when the "D" string is tuned down a whole step. Without the alternate tunings or virtual capo's on the 6 strings, I didn't hear the "D" string clash. I didn't test every model or scenario. Jeff: Correct, the other strings don't clash (that I've noticed) when tuned down a whole step, just peculiar to the "D" string. This clash is a MAJOR glitch in my opinion, so my initial request is to verify whether it is just my guitar or a common issue. -

The 12 strings are the problem! I haven't noticed this problem with 6 string guitars. See the first post.
