Why can I only access 8-10 stomp boxes within a preset?
SaschaFranck replied to kaffekask's topic in Helix
I would've absolutely loved a second page of stomp assignments. Was constantly running out of them with the Floor. Now that I downscaled to a Stomp it's not that much of an issue anymore (due to it's vastly reduced function on my board), but I wouldn't mind, though. Main reason for me was that stomp assignments are by far the fastest way to get to a block and edit it, so ideally I want pretty much everything assigned to a switch, even if I don't actually switch things. -
HX Stomp switches translate to which XL/Floor/LT switches?
SaschaFranck replied to SaschaFranck's topic in Helix
Thanks, Yeah well, I know that they're not exactly hardcoded, but they sort of are, though. In all other modes but plain stomp mode (snapshot snapshot/stomp, preset, etc.) switches 1 and 7 are reserved and can't be user assigned (as you will certainly know). I'm just asking because I might want to share some patches with users of larger units. So, to conclude: Snapshots stay the same (just the snapshot number is relevant) and switches 1-3 transfer to switches 1-3, so you need to enter 10-stomp mode on the larger units to see switch 1. And fwiw, sort of unrelated but still sort of related: Why isn't there an option to flip between modes on the Stomp without sacrificing an external switch (or bowing down, which doesn't count...)? Given that there's plenty of units on the market allowing you to do various things when pressing two switches simultaneously, this could very well be possible on the Stomp as well. Could be like: Pressing switches 1+2 would flip between whatever preset mode and stomp/snapshot mode, pressing switches 2+3 would flip between stomp and snapshot mode. Maybe time for another Ideascale visit... -
Title almost says it all. I'd simply like to know which switches the ones on the Stomp translate to when you're loading a Stomp patch into one of the larger units. My wild guess would be 1-3 but as in some modes 1 and 7 are reserved for patch/bank up/down on the larger units, I could as well imagine it'd be 2-4 or even 8-10.

Please describe your exact setup. Which program used for recording? Which Ins are you selecting there? And which outs? And what are the USB return settings on your Helix? And do other sounds played back from your PC sound fine through the Helix? You should defenitely not need another interface (aka soundcard) for recording what's coming out of the Helix, it's doing a most excellent job for that purpose.

Here's Mr. Cordy playing a TONEX capture of a Dumble previously owned by Joe Bonamassa. IMO this sounds as much as the real deal as it gets (and yeah, sure, what Cordy plays always sounds great, but I tried to not care about that aspect too much). I've been playing through some Dumble clones myself already (never owned one, though, but it was my plan to save some money for a Fuchs - then modeling reared its ugly head) and have a sweet spot for players like Ford and Carlton, so I'd consider myself being rather familiar with these kinda tones. And I can't say I heard much better Dumble tones anywhere (even if some Kemper profiles of Michael Britt and some of Fractal's Dumble models sound great). Anyway, I guess all I'm saying is that the TONEX capturing seems to work extremely well - which is what pretty much everybody else says, too.

That'd be my bet, too. Excellent video, though. -

Did you actually click the link provided two posts above yours? In case you didn't, now is the time... -
That's not true, there's an editor for the FM3 as well (and always has been). https://www.fractalaudio.com/support

Only have a german link, maybe it's switching to english automatically when you click on it? https://helixessentialsde.simplybook.it/v2/?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=CPC&utm_campaign=HelixEssentials#book

Got an external footswitch around somewhere? You could assign it to control at least some most basic switching (like rhythm/lead).

Gotta say "no" as well. Steve Vai is only able to speak for himself and the tones he needs. In case these are *exactly* the tones you want as well, then more power to him, but for pretty much all other cases, there's exactly one valid opinion on tone, namely yours. Sure, it might as well be affected by your environment, so in case you needed to deliver certain tones to play some gigs, then there might be some "experts" on those kinda tones, but even in that case, it's still absolutely crucial how things feel with your guitars, under your fingertips, in the context of the folks you're playing with, etc. So ultimately, the one to decide whether a tone suits your needs, is still you.

Done.

I've got a Zoom UAC-2, very nice latency numbers, but I still wouldn't really recommend it due to their driver support being quite slow. These days, for lower end-ish interfaces, as said above already, I'd likely recommend Motu. If money was no issue, supply chains sorted and latency the main thing you're interested in, RME all the way. IMO there's no better driver support anywhere.

Helix Update 3.0.1 "Boot Failure, Entered Update Mode!"
SaschaFranck replied to sventydeman's topic in Helix
Being a good person sometimes is quite challenging (usually too much of a challenge for me...). -
I thought UAD was releasing native versions of their plugins...
-
Do you have any plans to actually play through HX Native (or maybe some other plugins in addition)? In that case, the Helix hardware isn't the best choice due to rather high latency figures and you'd be served better with your FR interface. You'll be running into the same issue when using both as an aggregate device, fwiw.

Look here, says January 2022: https://gearspace.com/board/showpost.php?p=15796206&postcount=5092 There might be further additions later on in the thread.

There's some units with double purpose outputs, though (not the Helix however), such as my Zoom G3. Its left/mono out doubles as a headphone output (which is then stereo). No idea whether there's some clever switching happening inside once you plug the phones in, though.

As said, part of what might be the reason that quite some people prefer Fractal's modeling, might be that out of the box the Fractal units are sounding quite glorious. And I can still remember it myself... when I got my Helix, first thing I did was updating and restoring the factory presets. Then I decided to go through some of them. Wow, what an underwhelming experience, regardless of the guitar I plugged in. Was pretty similar when I loaded pretty much any A+C block into an empty preset. A while later I had an Axe FX III borrowed from a friend for some days, apparently with pretty much all factory content (presets and defaults) intact. What an incredible difference, really. And while that - very obviously - is quite a subjective thing, it's still what you read in all sorts of related discussions. Having said that, even after tweaking the Helix for quite a bit, I still think that some models in the Fractal offerings are better, perhaps even a lot. But in the end, the handful of models I ended up using within the Helix were pretty much as good and it certainly didn't justify the extra money and/or hassle to even think about switching. If I would ever get an Axe FX, it'd be for other reasons but sound quality. But I'm further away from even thinking about it than ever before.

Backup dialog failed to load - HX Edit, MacOS Mohave 10.14.6
SaschaFranck replied to dennyhardwick's topic in Helix
I'm on Mojave myself as well and I can backup my HX Stomp just fine - did you check different cables and USB ports (and make sure you're not using a hub)? Can you export your presets and favourites? Because if you could, you could do just that and restore the global settings manually after the update. You could then perform the update itself as described here:
