  1. Upgraded my HX Stomp (no issues), and am really digging the Ventoux with stock 212 Mail C12Q. Haven't tried it with IR's yet, but that will be tomorrow night. My favorite amp prior to this release was the Princeton and used it on a several recordings..... however, I'm really digging this Ventoux amp. It takes pedals nicely, and spit coil "cool rails" on my Strat sounds really sweet. Love the new Heliosphere Delay, and like how they fed the delay trails into the verb. Nice old fashion studio trick I learned from my mix teacher, Sean Slade (Radio Head), taught me a long time ago. I had a vocal track that had some delay on it, and he said bus the delay send (and only the send) into a reverb. Bingo! I've been using that trick ever since in mixes. It never gets old. But now, HX gives it to you in one effect. Very cool! Thanks for the update Line6, your teams are truly amazing!!!

  3. I've been cutting tracks for almost a year now 2020 iMac and Pro Tools in various ways using my HX Stomp and no issues. If you are going to the Pre of your DAW with 1/4 cables and using USB, you will get noise. Unplug the USB and learn how to use the interface on the Stomp itself. That's the first thing I learned, and it was recommended by Scott of Scott's Digital Guitar YouTube Chanel. Always learn how to do things from the interface. It's one or the other, USB or 1/4" cables. If I am going to record direct using the HX as my interface, I use USB. If I'm going to use the HX (for effects only) in front of an amp, I unplug the USB, as it creates a very nasty ground loop issue. Also I'm not so concerned at the recording levels from the USB. I'm assuming you are recording to digital not tape? If digital, the levels don't matter. You make that up with compression in the mix. I record somewhere between -22 to -16 db. I leave room for make-up gain, sends and busses before hitting the master fader. Start tracking cables, and swiping cables out. You may have a bad USB cable, you may have a bad 1/4" cable. Have yo tried a balanced 1/4" cable? Are you using a USB hub, or a USB extender? Line 6 does not recommend either, hubs or extenders. Will they work? Yes, but it's not recommend. If it's none of the above, then obviously something is wrong and contact Line 6.
  4. With the new features in the Morning Star MC 6/8 etc... you can now run a midi cable from the stomp into the MC6, originally only the MC6 controlled the stomp now it's two ways. This opens up way more capabilities than I imagined when the feature was first announced in October 2020: See 1:48 and 3:26 What I discovered is this is a fantastic option for being able to bank up / down from the MC6, but in the order you want... not sequentially, although it can be. You can use the MC6 to bank from say a clean preset at 1A to a Dirty in 4B just by giving the PC number in the assigned bank. So you could technically build a set list. I personally do not have a use case for this, but it's nice to be able to not only select presets from the Stomp, but also from the MC6. Another great feature is that I just discovered is that if the MC6 is doing the bank up / bank down work, plus you have the 6 switches on the MC to toggle any effect block, this frees up the ability to put the stomp into Snapshot mode. I just tested this... This is like having your cake and eating it too. You get six buttons for parameters, toggle presets either sequentially or in any order you like, and you can keep the stomp in snapshot mode. IIRC, this was not doable in the past. If the Stomp was in Snapshot mode, the MC only controlled the snaps... If my memory serves me right. So for those that think the Stomp is limited, I'm hear to say otherwise. Unless you're Robert Fripp, Alex Lifeson or The Edge, I don't see any limitations here.
  5. For my board I went with the Morningstar MC6MKII, which offers 6 programable switches for just about anything that can be controlled by Midi. Now the guys at Morningstar has added more functionality so that if you switch Stomp presets (1A) to (1B), the Morninigstar will now switch one bank up. So, 6 more programable switches. The other great things bout the Morningstar is that you can program the assigned name of the switch to flash. So lets say for example I have only two buttons programed for a particular preset, Delay and Reverb. I have mine set so when I turn Delay to the on position, the title "Delay" flashes. Your use-case is fairly straight forward. If you are using the HX Stomp in front of your amp, or in the FX loop of your amp for effects only, you can create a preset and load up to 8 effects/blocks (depending on how much DSP). Now here is the thing, you only have 3 switches. Reverb may leave on, Delay you may leave on, but maybe there is a distortion and some other insert effect, like flange or chorus, you can assign to the three switches. You're going to have to carefully plan your presets. Snapshots are just that... save states. They allow you set any variable at one state, then change the parameter and save that in another save state... etc.. Lets take my first example: I have a clean tone with light delay and Reverb. That's Snapshot #1 (base level state) Snapshot #2 will turn on the distortion, lower the percentage of reverb and maybe increase the percentage of delay a little bit. Snapshot #3 may increase the distortion even more for a singing lead, increase the delay percentage even more, turn off the Reverb, and maybe kick a flanger on, or whatever your little heart desires. Snaps are only save states within one preset, with snap #1 being the base level (starting point).... If the Morningstar MC6 isn't enough buttons, they make an MC8 with 8 buttons and more intense LCD display. The great thing about Morningstar is they keep coming out with updates and add more functionality. As far as bypass, there are a few modes on the Stomp and one is true-bypass. If you have a delay on, or whatever, and turn it off... that's your tone. If you're getting "tone suck" then look at your cable lengths. It may not hurt to use a buffer... I use the Empress Buffer +. This model eliminates the need from having a buffer at the beginning and ending of the chain (i.e. 2 buffers). The Empress Buffer + has essentially a loop, (out to effects pedals / return from effects pedals) along with a "guitar In" and "amp out". No one is more of a tone snob than me, I run two Dr.Z amps that are handwired point-to-point. My rectifier in both amps date back to 1959, and they have very natural sag and distortion.. Any pedal that is not boutique will suck tone on these amps... I can say without a doubt, when I used Effects Only Preset from the Stomp in front of either Z, I do not get tone suck. Look into the Morningstar MC6MKII.... that will probably cure all your ills.

  8. Yup, I recall it had to do with 6 blocks going to 8, and now you can afford to add fxloop block due to the gain of two blocks. Hey, what can I say.... "gettin' old..." Thanks!
  9. I vaguely remember hearing that with either 3.0 or 3.01 that a block didn't have to be dedicated in order to insert a pedal into the signal path of the HX Stomp, is that correct or is my memory just failing me? I'm voting on my memory failing me...

  12. I too have UA Apollo, it's the Twin X and run Pro Tools. I decided to use it via USB and just change the Playback engine in PT when tracking guitars with the Stomp. When Tracking, I prefer headphones anyway so it was no big change for me. The downside is PT makes you change playback engine and it does a save/restart of your session every time. But even when I track with a mic'd amp into UA, I still use headphones vs monitors. Once in a great while I'll go 1/4 cable out of HXS into my ADAT, but honestly I'm just enjoying having the HX connected via USB to my Mac. That way I can have PT and HX Edit up and make changes on the fly (more delay, less reverb... etc). Either way, sounds like you got good answers.
  13. HX Edit 3.01 will work on Big Sur Intel, however, when you shift focus from HX Edit to another application, HX Edit loses connectivity to the HX device (Helix, HX Stomp, HX FX), etc... This is known issue, but not a show stopper. As soon as you need to go back to HX Edit, just click the "reconnect" button at the bottom. Otherwise it will work just fine.
  14. 1.) Please tell us or upload a picture of what your signal path looks like for the Stomp, I.E. What do you have assigned to the blocks. 2.) Please tell us or upload a picture of your signal path, out of your guitar ---> stomp ---> amp. 3.) Please make sure you DO NOT have the USB plugged into a computer where audio is also getting routed too. (USB 1-2). Remove the USB cable from the back of the Stomp if you have that plugged in. I run a stomp on my pedal board and have a patch set for "Front of Amp." It's ONLY FX, no amp models, or amp cabs... My amps (Dr. Z's) are so quiet I could hear a pin drop.
  15. If you have an amp/cab in your signal path, and you are plugging from the Stomp into the front-end of the amp, there will be noise. Did you create a signal path of just effects? You should not have any amp/cab models in your chain when going to the front end of the amp. What kind of effects? Delay? Reverb? Start with just the two basics... a simple delay and reverb and see if you get any noise.
  16. Personally I don't think you have a good use-case unless YOU are the engineer. I would just make three patches: - Fender - Vox - Marshall All with no Effects (or at least a Reverb & Delay) mapped to the two remaining buttons. Have the artists bring their pedal board or use effects in post (which is my preference anyway). In other words, create a "virtual backline" typical of any studio. But for Pete's sake, keep it simple! I'm also questioning the amount of work you're putting in for a $600.00 purchase. It's a no brainer to have a Stomp or something like it around a studio, just in case... But since you asked, I'll answer how I use my Stomp: - In front of amp(s) just for effects: I have it on my pedal board with other pedals and it goes out my buffer to whichever amp I'm using. I have Dr.Z Maz 38 with Z-Best 2x12, or my other amp, Dr. Z Carmen Ghia 1x12. In this config, I have one and only one patch with Delay/Verb, volume pedal and Wah. That's it... I keep it simple. - Recording: For this I go out USB to my MAC running Pro Tools 2020. In this config, when I switch the playback engine in Pro Tools to HX Stomp, the Stomp becomes the audio interface. After I'm done with my tracking, I switch the playback engine back to my UA Apollo. And I do track with the amps. Each amp has a two mic setup on them. Fathead II / SM57 to my UA Apollo with Unison UA Pre's. Pretty much the only Amp model I use is the Princeton. i have three patches: - Princeton with stock 1x10 Cab - Princeton with Stock 2x12 Cab - Princeton with Ownhamer V30 2x12 (57/121) IR --> this is the patch I exclusively use. I have Delay/Verb/volume Pedal/Wah and Fuzz --- plus all the other pedals on my pedal board. Again, I keep it all simple. Hope all this helps!
  17. Very cool Phil. The Princeton is my default amp. The 1x10, 2x12 sounds great, but I really love it with an Ownhamer 4x12 Mesa cab with Rib/57 IR. Takes to all the pedals very nicely, especially my Zen Drive or Xotic AC Booster. I put a Wampler Ego in front at the beginning of the chain. I just did some tracks and comp'd it to a Dr Z Carmen Ghia 1x12 and it sounds pretty darn skippy in the mix with the Z.
  18. All good options. On my real amps (Dr. Z's) I don't have to fiddle much. Plug and play, few knobs and the truth... Let the old NOS rectifiers do the rest. I recall back in the day when I had a Digitech 2112 I used to have a bank for strat and a bank for Les Paul. But to my ears, what I was hearing wasn't really break-up, rather digital clipping. A fuzzy overtone to rather clean sound.
  19. Turned the drive to 4.5 to 2.5, boosted the CH Vol to 10... all better now! Looks like I'll have to make a Princeton Patch just for the Lester and one for the Strat.
  20. Hi All, My Les Paul custom is seriously clipping my Princeton preset. Nothing special, just the Amp, some delay and reverb. Dist is off, it's definitely clipping, not "break-up" Any particular parameters I should look at?
  21. I've had L6 products that go back to the first bean. Great for what they were back in the day, but given the opportunity to own a real amp in their model list, I'd always take the real one. Had the HX now for little over a year. This ain't your daddy's modeler for sure. We all know that, but I never tried A/B'ing between one of the models and a real life version of it. So I built my little vocal / amp booth (walk-in closet) and set my Dr. Z MAZ 38 with Z-Best 2x12 in there. Pulled the attenuator out of the mix and set up two mic's on the bottom speaker of the cab. Bottom speaker is a G12H 30, the top is a Vintage 30. I used a Fat Head Ribbon on the speaker cap and a 57 right next too it on the cone. Both mic's were aligned and about 5" from the speaker. (That's by design, the Doc sets the speaker about 4" back from the grill in the ported cab). Checked for phase, none, so mic's were aligned properly. Pulled up two tracks using UA Apollo Twin X / Console, with UA610 pre's unison. For giggles I put 1176's as inserts and sent them to two tracks in pro tools. I did a little blues vamp. Then I did another take for crappy guitar solo. For that, I stomped on my Xotic BB Pre and Wampler Comp. I didn't use any effects. No delay / no reverb. The room is two rooms over, so with all the doors shut, I couldn't hear the guitar. So my only means of hearing the Z, was through cans or monitors. I chose cans. So my aesthetic feel was the same as an amp in a live room, and me in the control room. Same way you'd use the Helix direct. I then quickly dialed up a patch in stomp, Zed Interstate and native cab (the modeled Z-Best 2x12), no IR"s. Again, no effects, just the amp/cab with a comp at the end of the chain, via USB into ProTools. Did the same vamp, same crappy guitar solo. Again, I chose cans over monitors. On playback of my disastrous impromptu jam, I discovered that while there are differences, I would expect that. Different mic's, different rooms, I'm in a closet, etc. L6 modeled a RT66 (KT66 tubes), I have a Maz 38 (EL84's), so serious differences. But here is where it got interesting. No one (friends /wife) could tell which was mine or Line6. Actually the wife liked the Line6 better. She said it was tighter. Hmmmm. That's damn good! In conclusion, I know there have been some good shoot out videos out there (I'm not a You Tuber), but I have to say, If you're not taking the L6 lineup seriously, start rethinking it. While the real z was a bit warm, and had some natural compression and sag with some fat mids, I think that if you were just given a mix you probably wouldn't know. Z's aren't rare amps, but they're usually not the first amp everyone is comping against. So as a Z-Natic, I'm here to say... The Doc may have the cure, but Line 6 has the supplement. :) Anyway that's my rant...
  22. Did some tracking tonight. My chain was Guitar -> Pedal Board (with HX on it) -> DR Z Maz 38 Amp -> UA Apollo -> Pro Tools. I use the HX Stomp for two different applications. When using with my amp, it's just an effects box (vol/wah/reverb/delay) no amps/cabs. The second application is for direct USB into ProTools with amp/cabs/effects. My Dr. Z amps are normally quiet. You could hear a pin drop when the guitar volume is turned down. Beauty of point-to-point wiring by the Doc. Well, my amp sounded as noisy as a 63 Falcon. First troubleshooting tip is to always remove what's between your guitar and amp. So I went right from guitar into amp. Quiet as a butterfly. Plugged everything back in and loads of noise. Now this is where I asked myself, have I noticed this before... long pause... NO. What changed? Could be the USB cable plugged into the computer with the UA Console and PT running? I unplugged the USB cable and all noise went away. There must have been some weird feedback loop of audio getting fed from the daw or something. Weird because the playback device was set to Apollo Twin X. So, lessons learned I guess. Of course when I decided to do a few tracks with Stomp directly into PT, I used the USB again. This is the first time I've experienced this and can't recall why it happened.
  23. Right on... I went back to my old standby ProTools. Now that I have PT2020 loaded, I have the best of all worlds, UA Apollo Twin X Duo, Luna, PT, HX Stomp etc... Loads of options now. But I have to say I didn't hear any audio issues going old fashion audio cables into my UA and then into Luna. If you have latency issues, you should put your plugs in the UA console not in the DAW. Problem is, I think only the Console loads UA plugs, which is why Helix Native probably has latency. I don't know I haven't tried it since I'm running the HX Stomp. For a fledgling DAW, I have to admit Luna is a great product. The developers are really in-tune with their users. I'm not keen on the work flow... the interface UX/UI needs to mature. Really big fat appearance, windows within windows, especially the mix window.. It looks like an old app from the mid-90's that was never sized well or the resolution was bad. If they could make the mix window a bit more Pro Tools-ish... that would be helpful. As far as console goes, my UA Apollo Twin X is fantastic and I love the ability to throw effects on and either not print or print with them or do the unison mic-pre's. Wish I had that YEARS ago. But it's all good... Now I just have to get creative and do something with all this gear... Creativity seems to be the hard part! Thanks everyone for chiming in. I think since 3.0 came out I haven't left the Princeton amp... Seems to be the probably the best amp for my taste. Rock-on everyone.

  25. Hi All, I'm using UA Luna as my DAW (temporarily) and was wondering if there is anyone using HX/Helix as an interface with Luna? I'm guessing the answer is no, as I've spent an hour futzing around trying to find out if there is a way to do it. Thought I'd ask...
