teejayh
I have a JTV-59 and I HD500. I have a chance to get a great deal on a DT25 OR a DT50. Which would you choose and why? The amp would be used in my music room mostly but occasionally I play out. I noticed the control knobs are different between the amps but does one or the other have more options to use? Any help would be appreciated.
geppert
They are basically the same amp, same preamp models, etc., EXCEPT the DT50 is more than "one louder" as Nigel Tufnel would say. For me, the DT25 is more than enough but everybody's needs are different. The nice thing about the DT25 is that you can "push it" without destroying everybody's tympanic membranes ..... if you catch my drift? Both excellent amps. I also like the smaller portability of the DT25 head/cab. I like the sound of the cab over the open back combo .... plus, and this is very important, .... the head/cab just looks waaaay cooler !~! Just my $.02 for what it's worth. Others will respond no doubt.
edstar1960
If you are mainly using it for home use then the DT25 is the one to go for based on size and volume. And when you play out, it is certainly plenty loud enough for small to medium gigs to be heard over the drums and cut through in a 5 piece band - and if you play large venues I guess you would be mic'd up or DI'd - so I reckon it will suffice there too. Just my opinion.
spaceatl
I have a DT50 112 and a DT25 head & cab...Amps are basically the same...If had to choose, it would keep the DT50. Mainly because I have determined that I prefer the vibe of EL34s over EL84s...That difference is subtle...Additionally, sometimes I like to get that Twin spank vibe where the dynamics are jumping out of the amp and grabbing me around the neck...DT25 can't do that...It's simply too underpowered to match the clean dynamics of a DT50....That isn't as important to some players...In terms of playing with a band, I find the DT25 a little underpowered for clean tones.... teejayh
Thanks guys. I picked up the DT25 today mainly because it is about 40 lbs lighter than the DT50 Combo.
jws1982
I agree with spaceatl on the headroom for dynamics with clean tones. The DT50 wins there for sure. My preference overall is the DT25. It weighs less, still sounds great, and does fine for all the gigs I do. I play a regular rock gig on saturday nights with a 4-piece band (2G,1B,1D) to around 100-150 people on a somewhat small stage. I use in-ears with all the other gigs I do, so there's no need for a larger amp. If I was doing gigs on a larger stage w/o in-ears, I would definitely consider the DT50. I'd probably just end up adding an extension cab to my DT25 though. I guess I'm more about portability these days. I use to play with a guy who would bring 3 different amps to a show (2 heads w/4x12's, and one 4x10 combo) and 5 or 6 guitars just to get some exact sounds. Talk about a logistical nightmare. It was always interesting to watch him spend an hour setting up, tuning, troubleshooting the hiss/hum, and tweaking. Then, he'd be stuck in a 2'x2' square because he was surrounded by so much gear. ...Anyways, I'm sure that was a factor in my movement towards shrinking my rig. yhng
I get a DT50-212 today. My primary use is for home practice. The reason I make this choice is because there is a crazy sale in my town. DT25-112 and DT50-212 is just different by USD125!
geppert
The portability of the little guy is a big plus .... I can barely lift my SV212 on to the tailgate of my truck let alone a DT50 combo. Yet the DT25 head/cab is easy peezy. A nice manageable package. I am about to get a 2nd DT25-112 Cab just to look even cooler. Our drummer is pretty darn loud and I can even beat him up with the DT25 so for my needs it is pretty much perfect.I think you will like your DT25 (Teejayh). DragonRM
The dt50 212 sounds awesome... nice to have the 2 different Celestions and the options that come with a stereo setup... but I'm considering picking up a dt25 112 cab just for the portability. Just spent too much money on eBay and got a dt50 HD and 412... And a buddy is getting me a dt25 cab for smaller rooms lol... I need a bigger studio
wolbai
Hi, the DT50 / 212 combo is a heavy monster and I am carrying the combo around with a case - but I love it sound wise. The clean headroom is not to under estimated; therefore a 50 Watt amp just gives more this Fender Twin Twang others already have mentioned. I would buy a DT50 again, but as a DT50 Head and two decent 2 x 12 cabs: less heavy and pretty flexible on all type of gigs I used to play.
