ReeV0
Hi all, So I just spent a bomb on my new Stomp after doing hours of research and watching youtube videos etc. I set it up, load up a youtube tutorial to help me get a neat Darkglass tone, and start following it through. Right off the bat, the tutorial selects an 'IR'... I don't have any IR's on my pedal or in the HX Edit software, so I google it. Turns out these things aren't free, and in my case the tutorial was using an SVT 10 cut dynamic, which is like $30. Checked out some other tutorials, they are all using IR's. Unless I've got things completely backwards, I've just spent £400 on a Stomp and now need to spend extra to get it to sound half decent? Hi, Nope, you don’t need to spend anymore cash. What you have bought is a unit that is cable of producing the same sounds as the Helix. In order to keep it compact it only has 1 DSP and less FX blocks. It comes fully equipped, stage ready right out of the box, amplifiers and cabinets are included - along with the option to add Impulse Response versions of cabinets from third parties. Because some guy on a UChoob vid adds an IR that’s his option, you don’t necessarily have to follow. Furthermore, not all IRs are commercial, there are some freebies out there of variable quality, so paying does have advantages. Also, when you copy a preset done by someone else, even if you did have the same IR, unless you have the same guitar, pickups, monitors and listening environment and of course “touch” - it could well sound like a bag of nails. There is no guarantee. No, you don’t need IRs and your investment is safe - learn how to craft your own sound. Hope this helps/makes sense
Schmalle
"I saw a guy on the internet building a bass metal patch around an IR that he bought. Therefore my HX Stomp can maximally sound half decent! WTF?!" Is that what you're asking? LOL.
rd2rk
No. You DON'T have to use IRs to get a good tone, especially on Bass. Start by learning how to use the built-in Helix cabs. There ARE YT vids on that (tho not usually bass-centric). Go to the Redwirez site and download their free explanation of the characteristics of different mics. Study up on the effects of moving a mic to different distances from the cab. Try the different mics and distances for yourself. Find out how eq works. Every Helix cab has Bass and Treble adjustments, as does every amp and many effects. Learn. The cool guys on YT are selling something, even if it's just their rep as "experts". Also, be VERY aware that, no matter what you do on the Stomp, the MOST IMPORTANT part of your signal chain is the final speaker and cabinet that reproduces the finished sound. If you're using a 3" monitor, it's NEVER going to sound like an 810 SVT Fridge, no matter WHAT IR you use!
Schmalle
Well, not to forget that there are lots of good bass presets on CustomTone.

Now I understand the situation - you seem to be “upset” by finding he used an IR in the preset and you really don’t want to pay for it? Before he starts to describe how he put that tone together, Nick also states that before every tracking session the puts on new “Elixir” strings. I find it a little strange you didn’t complain about that, as it is a contributing part of the sound - did you check the price of those muthas? After all - you just spent “a bomb” on your HX Stomp, which your mate got you to buy, but you found it didn’t have as many FX as your hacked cheapo Zoom - seems you rather like something for nothing. Maybe that Russian hacker who got your MS-70CDR all the “extra” sounds for nothing could find you some bootleg IRs and free strings. Tell me I’m wrong. That's ok, I found 'em myself :)

If it makes you feel any better, I spent $1500 on Helix floor... at today's exchange rate that's almost 3 "bombs", and my IR's weren't free either. Welcome to life.... Or just use the stock cabs in the Stomp, and it won't cost you anything extra. They're perfectly usable.
