Variax Ghost Notes In Alternate Tunings With Newest Workbench.

Recommended Posts

I posted a comment yesterday, absolutely convinced that it was a software problem and not the acoustic sound of the guitar I was hearing.

I've since listened on some proper headphones and am not so sure... a rehearsal this week will hopefully make this clearer.

My JTV-59 is so much louder acoustically than my old 700 and I'm beginning to believe this may really be the source!

My Variax 600 is now absolutely useless for alt tunings.  It would be nice if L6 would chime in other then saying bring it to a service center.  My alt tunings have worked for years and I just recently made some changes in Workbench (updated version on win7 machine) and poof it's all messed up. Even if I drop just the low E to D, all the other strings are playing two notes. Sabotage?  To bad because this thing sounds great with the  Ghost saddles I put on a few years ago.  Hopefully help is on it's way?

Glad you solved it.  I had grounding problems on my 500 with the original piezos.  I also upgraded to the Ghost saddles.  It was difficult to connect all of the ground wires but the results were worth the effort.  No more grounding problems.  I wish that Line6 would do that on the newer Variax designs.  It's still the single wire relying on the case for ground.  This works for a while but it's easy to have a bad ground which causes all sorts of problems like the one you had.

You could solder the ground wires to 1 wire then lead it to the place where the ground is.

I agree about using the case again for ground. Bad design which will ultimately cause grime and oil to disconnect the ground when enough gets in there.

That's exactly what I did when I fixed the problem, much easier then getting all the ghost saddle ground wires to ground point.

Here I am 8+ years later and ran into the problem described here, I thought I was crazy...

I finally started playing regularly again about a year ago (after about a 15 year hiatus), and loving my Variax 700 as always. Bought a Helix to go with it, still turns heads all the time. (My poor Vetta II is now just sitting around for when I need to connect the Variax to Workbench.)

Eventually I wanted my custom tunings to be based on the Les Paul model instead of the Strat model, and managed to get a Parallels Windows 7 machine set up with Java 6 and Workbench 1.75. Things seemed fine, but...

All my custom tunings had this weird hiss. Unlike all of the various folks guessing and troubleshooting from afar on the internet, this was not the notes from the physical strings in the air, and unrelated to magnetic pickups or resonance, as it happens with straight headphones. And it didn't happen until I edited patches with Workbench 1.75.

Luckily I had backed up all my original Variax bundles before I started editing. I reloaded all of that, and with the original patches (edited with who knows what version of Workbench, probably back in 2005), no funky hiss. I still want to sort out an older version of Workbench, because I am convinced if I can go back in time far enough, I can get the tunings I want with the guitar model I want and without the hiss. In the meantime, the patches I edited in 2005 will just have to do.

To be more clear - you can load old Variax patches with 1.75 and you won't have the hiss. Edit those patches with 1.75, and you get hiss. I have not messed around with any firmware and do not intend do risk that for 20-year-old out of support product.

Meanwhile, does anyone have a Workbench 1.5x installer they can link? I'll ask support for it, but I don't have much hope in help there.

Error code 8000900C MIDI device timed out, does not mean it is bricked.

Double check the OS of your computer with the the application. Make certain you are using the correct OS for that app.
