How Do You Remove The Model Knob?
clay-man replied to aggravation's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
high 5. If you put just a little, it'll be enough to hold it in place securely, but just little enough to break off if you ever need to take it off again. I took off my knob and the tab that stops the knob from spinning past custom 1 and custom 2 kept being higher than the obstruction so I used super glue to make sure the knob stopped rising up past that point again. -
Hurry Please, I Want My Decent Strat Back
clay-man replied to Melissiah's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Please don't say to "copy and paste strat 1.9 to 2.0" That's an incredibly bad and impossible idea. I'm sure there's some core system to the HD modeling and that the 1.9 strat couldn't be entered as a standalone extra without using even more of the flash RAM for the firmware. It would also be inconsistent which would be annoying. Ask them to fix the HD Workbench editor so you guys can finally tweak the stat to your liking without it screwing up. THIS is what needs to be fixed. Disregarding that, workbench is the best way to fix any tonal issues you have with the patches. Example: On my 600, I was unimpressed with how the tele wasn't as bright as I wanted it to be, so I backed up the pickups a bit towards the bridge and bam, sounds amazing. Sounds a lot more twangy and distinct from the strat models now. -
If it's not labeled Variax then I'm pretty sure that means it's not for a Variax. Besides, the VDI has a casing on the ends of the cables that wouldn't allow you to fit it in an ethernet port unless you took that off.
-
Is there no way to use the bridge pickup but have it muted so that it could be used for the sustainiac? That way it could drive the sustainiac but you hear the Variax only.
-
does the sustainiac work at the same time as the variax?

Coated Strings (cleartones) With Variax?
clay-man replied to clay-man's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
Got my cleartones today. They sound great on the Variax. Switched back from 11's to 10's because I think the 6th string was too big to fit in the piezo and cut the volume down a bit (which I fought by maxing out the global volume on that string). So far they sound great. Sound 100 times better than the old strings. The thing with Cleartone strings is that instead of a polymer coating, it has this weird microthin bonding material so it doesn't deaden the tone or feel slippery. The only problem I've seen about them is people complaining they didn't last long at all, but that's just a few reviews that I've seen. I'm hoping that they last really long like they should, otherwise I might try Elixir polywebs instead. -
Coated Strings (cleartones) With Variax?
clay-man replied to clay-man's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
That was my other choice, but I'm hoping my cleartones experience will be the positive and not the negative from the mixed reviews. -
Anyone try coated strings with the Variax? I'm tired of my strings dying after a few days of use so I'm trying coated strings. My concern is that coated strings are apparently louder than normal strings, and I'm wondering if that's going to mess with the response of the piezos. Hopefully if it does I can just lower the string volumes.

Potential Issues With My New Jtv59p?
clay-man replied to the29band's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Ouch. You're that guy that was asking about getting a 59p vs 69. That sucks that your first try was a dud, but yes, trade it in and hopefully get a proper working one. It's really, really worth it when you get a good one. -
2.0 It's Been A While
clay-man replied to Melissiah's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
No way. You don't strike a deal with a luthier just to discontinue the product 3-4 years later. I'm sure the JTV will last for a long while. -
2.0 It's Been A While
clay-man replied to Melissiah's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Thought JTV was released in 2011? That's not 5 years, that's 3. Hopefully they'll fix the bugs, and yet there's bugs. I'm not talking about people whining about how they think the strat sounds, I'm talking about the pickup editing in workbench and the string volume. Those are legit complaints. They wouldn't abandon the JTV btw, it's going incredibly strong. They wouldn't have made all these updates and new JTVs just to abandon it a year later. -
I love the 59's look but I have to agree the 3 way switch is a deal breaker. The only thing I can say it's useful for having the 3 way switch is if you want just that, to have a 3 way switch and not accidentally over/undershoot the selector. Switching between 1-3-5 and 2-3-4 seems annoying though if you're in the middle of a song so I'd prefer to have the 5 way switch. Anyways, if I'd get a JTV i'd get the 69s because I've been growing into a strat/tele person. The 59 is beautiful and great though.

Is Vdi An All-digital Signal?
clay-man replied to clay-man's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Perhaps, but another good thing is that it reduces some latency by skipping a D/A A/D stage. -
A guitar cabinet will cut the rich highs on the acoustics. It's ok but really detracts from the acoustic sound. It's best to feed it through some type of PA system or full range speakers. Perhaps an A/B switch when switching from electric to acoustic to switch between an amp and PA/direct system. Either that or just have it through a PA and simulate cabs with the HD500.

Jtv-69 Neck Finish - Glossy Vs Matte
clay-man replied to avibee's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
You short circuit a regular guitar it'll just start buzzing or not making sound most likely. You short circuit a computer system and you can possibly fry or damage components that are getting voltages that they're not supposed to. This can result in it not working properly or not working at all. -
Is Vdi An All-digital Signal?
clay-man replied to clay-man's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Thank you. That means the Variax VDI output is completely pure and doesn't degrade. Pretty neat and smart. -
Is using a VDI a digital signal? As in it doesn't go through and D/A converter and just sends the audio data over to a POD?

Jtv-69 Neck Finish - Glossy Vs Matte
clay-man replied to avibee's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
make sure you do not get any of the steel wool inside the guitar. I'm sure it can short circuit it if you do. -
You know what would have secured you guys from NEVER having to buy a replacement piezo piece? HAVING A GROUND WIRE. I don't understand why they couldn't have done that. It's that simple. You have an OPEN piezo that grounds via contact, crap will get in the openings and a layer will form around the piezo and eventually disconnect the grounding. If you have a ground wire, it'll always be secure as long as you don't blatantly rip out the piezo from the socket and break the wire, which is something you shouldn't be doing.

Rotary Model Selector Switch Removal
clay-man replied to Sumatra_Gold's topic in Variax Guitars / Bass / Workbench
It does lift. Just pry it carefully. I removed mine just fine, the only problems I had is that it kept sliding off again so I put a very small dab of superglue on it so it doesn't lift off anymore.- 4 replies
