The model selector not engaging was a relatively common problem because the shaft was too short - pull the knob off put a little bit of paper inside to make the hole a bit shorter and put it on again. For rubbish modelling first thing to try is to re-flash the JTV (twice according to L6 process docs), then look at the global string volumes as some people (me included) have found that reducing to -6db or so per string really helps. The other thing you may have is resonance of the trem springs which are supposed to be damped by a little bit of material inside them - check you have this in place

When you change string gauge on a 69 or any other guitar with a floating trem you need to balance the trem - the plate (on which the saddles sit) should be roughly parallel with the body which is achieved by balancing the tension from the strings with the tension from the tremolo springs (behind the big plastic plate on the back). If you put lighter strings on you need to slacken the screws the hold the springs to the body to reduce the tension to match the lighter strings, if you put heavier strings on you need to tighten the screws so the springs pull harder. This is in addition to checking intonation. What I find amazing is that in 40 years you've never changed strings! Somebody is definitely on your side as I would have expected at least one to break in that time if they hadn't rusted to nothing. Strings on electrics will loose their brightness after time, and even with Elixir (coated) strings you probably need to change them every 3 to 6 months. The JTV 69 is a bit different for string changing as they not only have locking tuners but also an unusual method of attaching at the tremolo end - both of which are very easy to use and are better than the traditional mechanisms. Search this forum for threads that cover this and perhaps YouTube if you want to see it. The only thing to watch out for is that if you remove all the strings at the same time the trem can jump off the posts, but the easy way around that is to place a bit of card underneath the Trem plate before you remove the strings. -
Master Knob is supposed to be 100% for best sound quality according to Line 6. You turn it down if using headphones or if the system receiving the signal doesn't have a volume control or is being overloaded. Generally the HD is quite quiet to avoid clipping - especially with Acoustic Guitar the normal signal level is generally -12db

Jtv: Clearance... End Of Line?
Rewolf48 replied to Rewolf48's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Ahh... somebody not used to the phrase "Rip Off Britain". The UK is well known for having Prices that just don't match what you would expect from exchange rates - some manufacturers even price USD and GBP the same, and notorious ones (Adobe) price GBP well above USD (e.g. The UK upgrade to Photoshop CS extended is £444 inc. VAT or $715, the USA price is £248 or $399). One factor is that UK Prices include VAT (Sales Tax) at 20% while US Prices exclude Sales Tax which means that the US equivalent is £624 = $1000. The list price for JTV 69 (korea) in the UK is £1049, and all the dealers stuck to that Price - no discounts. Now suddenly a large chunk of the range is down to £750 across most of the dealers. What bothered me more was that Dealers that are large Line 6 Stockists (ones that stock M20d as opposed to ones with one or two items only) are using phrases such as "Reduced to Clear" and "Only While Stocks Last". They are also bundling JTV + HD500x + bag for the original list price - bundles are also a "dump the stock while we can" tactic. Maybe it is just affecting the UK, maybe some people are going to get a nice Christmas present, or maybe it is something else? -
I did this - nearly at the same time flash to 2.0 first and then string change. When I first flashed to 2.0 the Acoustics increased in volume - and I mean massively, all my acoustic patches completely useless and over-compressed due to the increase in volume - completely ruined one rehearsal. But the other guitars didn't appear to be noticeably different. I had to play with the global string volumes to get a sensible acoustic sound back again, but I didn't work this out for a rather frustrating few days. Once I had the acoustics so that they didn't appear really compressed the electrics were a little quiet, but the lower volume isn't that much of a problem as I just boost it on the FRFR. Since then I changed to 11s and I reflashed as per the Line 6 maintenance process (backup customised patches, apply 2.0 overwriting patches, apply 2.0 again overwriting patches, restore customised patched). I then balanced the Global String Volumes again and somehow it was different this time - mine are now also around -5 to -7 db (lower on the bass strings). Much happier with it all now - it is a little bit quieter than it was, and had to lower the mag pickups slightly to get them balanced with the models, but I have adjusted the HD500 patches to match. What I don't understand is why apply a firmware update doesn't always stick properly and why it should improve things to apply it again, but it does.

Sorry - can't help if it is L6 Link related as I don't have anything to connect it to
-
Line 6 have tried to make this really simple, but actually made it too simple so it becomes hard. Various suggestions have been made, but nothing has changed yet. First the hardware set-up - connect MIDI cable to HD500 MIDI Out into FX Unit MIDI in. After that it depends on the unit. MIDI is a point to point protocol, you can daisy chain devices together as long as they allow "MIDI Through" (everything coming in is copied to the MIDI Out or MIDI Through socket). If the device doesn't support MIDI through then you will need to have a MIDI Thru device to connect multiple downstream devices. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIDI for a general overview; the main thing is that there are "16 Channels" and a logical device will only listen on a single channel. Complicated devices such as Workstations can listen on all 16, but effect units will only listen on one (or Global which means it ignores the channel and listens to everything). What you want is that when you change Patch on the HD500 that the downstream device also changes Patch (Preset). This is done by the HD500 sending a Program Change (PC) Midi Message on a specific MIDI Channel and the Effects Unit listening on that Channel and changing to the require Preset when it receives the PC Message. Things are not always as obvious as they might be - PC Messages only contain a single data value which is a number between 0 and 127, the Device then maps that Number to a Preset. The HD500 for example has 16 "Banks" of 4 Presets, which means that it only responds to PC 0 - 63 and ignores higher values. Then the practicalities with an HD500 which are described in the HD500 Advanced Guide (manual downloads from Line 6). The HD500 automatically sends on the Global MIDI Channel any change of Preset, so if you go to Bank 1 Preset 1 it sends "PC-00" if you go to Bank 3 Preset 2 it sends "PC-10". You can change the MIDI Channel in the Global Settings. If you connect an Effects Unit that accepts PC messages it will change Preset to its definition of what those numbers mean. Now the bad news - you can't change the PC Message that is sent by the HD500 and you can't turn it off, it is always sent. One commonly requested enhancement is to be able to define what PC is sent by the HD when a new patch is activated. What Line 6 have done is to make it simple (no configuration at all) to synch two Line 6 HD units - for example an HD500 and HDPro can be connected by a MIDI cable and without editing anything the two units with change Presets exactly in synch with each other. Where you have problems is that if you only have 16 presets on your effects unit, then it will only respond to PC 0 to 15, which mean that it will only respond to the first 4 Banks on the HD500 and what it does after that is up to the receiving unit what it does. Also poor is that if you only want to create say 4 presets on the Effects Unit and re-use these on many HD Patches then you can't except by making copies of those presets (which is a pain for editing those presets) What you can do is to add MIDI Messages to specific buttons on the HD and these can be against any MIDI Channel - so you can set FS1 to send PC 99 on Channel 3, but this requires you to press FS1 to send this message, and you really didn't want to have to do that. Line 6 could enhance the MIDI controller capability massively - for example it could be possible to define up to 16 PC message that are automatically sent, but to date you can't. There are software and hardware devices that can sort this out for you and add a lot of additional flexibility. For software it means having a computer with a MIDI interface and it will remap incoming messages into completely different outgoing messages. More practically for live performance there are hardware devices that can be programmed in advance such as MIDI Solutions Event Processor, http://www.midisolutions.com/EP_Guide.htm

Jtv: Clearance... End Of Line?
Rewolf48 replied to Rewolf48's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Anderton's do have B Stock - only £499 for JTV89 (non-trem), this price reduction is affecting new A stock. But they also have some still at what was full price, so perhaps there is some re-arrangement of the Product line going on with less popular models being discounted. Shame I can't justify a second JTV as a back-up (...because I just bought a Yamaha Motif XF which has used up all the goodwill with the missus for quite a while) -
Just got the latest Email from guitarguitar in the UK which is one of the largest retail chains (and a very good one too) they have 16 models in stock, plus M20d, PODs, StageSource range, etc. So a big L6 supplier in the UK. Line 6 Tyler Variax are £500 off in a "Reduced to Clear" (down to around £750) Great for anybody looking for a new one http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/electric_guitars_detail.asp?stock=10071611170515 But it isn't just guitarguitar for example look at Thomann (Europe wide Web dealer): http://www.thomann.de/gb/line6_james_tyler_jtv69variax_3ts.htm Or Anderton's (world famous because of their review videos): WAS £1049! Only while stocks last! http://www.andertons.co.uk/solid-body-electric-guitars/pid18997/cid671/line-6-jtv69-james-tyler-variax-guitar-in-3-tone-sunburst.asp?LGWCODE=18997;56375;2717&utm_source=googlebase&utm_term=992330105&utm_medium=pricecomp&utm_campaign=GoogleShopping&gclid=CPi-4fC_-LoCFRIPtAodtA4ACw So why is everyone dumping JTVs? Is it End of Line

Jtv Firmware V2.0 Global String Settings
Rewolf48 replied to edstar1960's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I also had to go down to around -6db before I could start hearing a volume difference (I had also installed 11s), but that is because the modelling appears to compress overly loud signals. While it means that the model process doesn't overload and send out distortion (good) it doesn't mean that if you don't try adjusting the global string levels that you may lose the responsiveness and subtlety of the models, the acoustics can sound overly loud and in some cases with humbuckers you get a wah type sound; all of which sound rubbish. When I first updated to 2.0 I had 0db on all strings, I adjusted them down so that the acoustic models felt like the responded properly, and when I re-flashed it looked as if my earlier changes had been retained - not that I wrote them down or anything; No idea why your adjustments were different. I wish there was a calibration process built into Workbench so that the global string volumes can be normalised for optimal modelling - as in press button to start and then strum really hard, end result is that the calibration process sets the string volumes to match your actual pickup sensitivity, string choice and playing strength. -
I am guessing here that "It appears the edit amp page and the i can see the volume knob goes down till zero" is the significant part - assuming that you mean the dedicated Amp Volume knob on the HD500 (right most of the Amp knobs) What is happening is that the knob is being detected by the software as moving and so is changing the volume - except that you are obviously not directly moving it. This can (but shouldn't) happen if there are vibrations which you can get a lot of on stage - in fact I have had a few similar volume drops which could be the same thing. Try turning the knobs a few times in case it is simply a bit of dirt or dust, or try switch cleaner, and as a final option try putting them in a parked position (fully turned one way or the other)
-
Put a +4 signal into an input expecting -10 and it will overload the input and you will get clipping which will sound like bad distortion, which you need to be able to hear, hence checking with a clean sound
-
The opposite is the case - Line is +4, Instrument is -10; see the manuals, I would give you a link but not so easy on my tablet
-
So what you really want is for Line6 to make HDEdit work in multiple instances with multiple devices connected at the same time. It shouldn't be that difficult to achieve.... especially if it is a problem for those who would be purchasing several devices
-
FX Loop +4db or -10db settings: Audio equipment has these two as "standards" for how big a signal can be +4db = Line and -10db = Instrument level. If you have a switch you set it to whatever the equipment on the other end of the cable is using, if both have switches then go for the higher level on both. But as with most such "standards" there is a wide variation in what specific gear can output or receive and they often don't match. The only thing you can do is experiment with the settings until you find one where it doesn't overload when you want clean sounds. The HD500 has Line and Instrument settings that match the +4 and -10 settings on the JVM so both are adjustable. Series FX Loops interrupt the main signal so that the FX Return is all that goes to the power amp, Parallel FX loops pass the primary signal though and you want the FX return signal to contain only effects without the original signal. For using the HD500 you want to be using Series which is 100$ wet on the amp. This link might help you: http://jvmforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5333
-
If you are happy with running the effects chains is series e.g HD500 does up to Amp and HD Pro does post amp effects such as those expensive reverbs, then I believe that you could use the S/PDIF out on the HD500 into the S/PDIF in on the HDPro and avoid the double DA - AD conversions of the FX loop. Control would still have to be MIDI Haven't tried it myself because I haven't got an HD Pro
-
I guess that the Looper mode is a problem as it will also do a mode change (again haven't tried it as I am at the day job), but it should work for Bank Up and Down, the 8 FS and Tap, which is 11 switches. Not everything on the HD units is quite as logical as it could be.
-
If you have acoustic sounds or mic going through the HD500 then you need a full range output so you need the L2/3, so the decision is made for you. If you are only playing electric guitar through the HD500 then the DT may be a little better. In my case I play about half the set with JTV acoustic sounds so I use some FRFR speakers which I got before the L series speakers were announced.

I agree it is stereo, and I use it as such to receive inputs from my Motif XF6 which I play as well as my JTV 69 (sometimes both simultaneously if you use HD500 switches to send MIDI Note On), but unless I am missing a trick you can't route FX Left down path A and FX Right down path B to give separate processing as required for "on separate signal paths with independent control of each chain of effects". It would be nice to know if you can ;)

Alternate Tuning Vs. Virtual Capo
Rewolf48 replied to bwnichols's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Virtual capo changes the open tuning of the guitar. Which is the most common requirement - so it is almost instant for playing in Drop D or Eb (these are actually preset tunings on a JTV). What you are asking for is that notes fretted above a certain point on each string play as normal, but that notes at or below that point sound as if they were fretted at that point. This is an interesting idea (never seen let alone tried a Spider Capo), and one that could potentially be supported on a JTV through a software upgrade if Line 6 choose to try it. But it isn't how it currently works. It would require that the tuning adjustment per string is dynamically changed (for fretted below the capo point) or switched off (for fretted at or above the capo point). You could submit this as a suggestion on http://line6.ideascale.com/ but don't hold your breath waiting -

Just to extent silverhead's answer - if you want independent signal paths you can't use the FX Loop - it allows a Stereo signal to be processed down a single path (until the first mono effect), but it is not possible to split L & R for separate processing

Jtv-89f Palm Muting?
Rewolf48 replied to ice9mike's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
The modelling should be the same for the 59 and 89F, but while the modelling is software and the same, this is not true for the sensitivity of the piezos, and a bigger signal on the 89F as daedae says will give different response in modelling. You can try using Workbench HD and turn down the string volumes globally which appears to apply before the modelling. Then there seems to be a compression stage to catch signals that are too hot - it made a large difference to my 69 when I changed to 11s for the 2.0 Acoustics which were sounding compressed direct from the JTV and it might explain why you can hear the pick noise so much.- 25 replies
