  1. Not sure why you go back to Mags, unless you were using "Variax Mags" as the input on the HD rather than "Variax". But you are quite right the HD forcing of JTV patches is not quite as well thought out as it might be. If it set to Force then it will change the JTV, if the next patch is Don't Force then normally the JTV stays exactly where it was. Which doesn't work too well if you don't want to have a forced JTV patch on every HD patch as if not careful you end up with Acoustic 12 string into Treadplate. The much more logical behaviour is that when Don't Force is set then the JTV reverts to the selected knob positions on the guitar - but it doesn't work that way. So you have to set all patches to a reasonable default and then change to what you really wanted, which sort of defeats the point. It would also be great if you could "Force Bank" - that is if you have the JTV set to say Acoustic 3, and go to a HD Patch that forces to Spank 2, then you should be able to get to Spank 1 - 5 JTV patches using the switch even though the Bank Knob still says Acoustic.
  2. You can't. Or at least what I think you are asking - you can't. I think you want to go TD3 <MIDI> HD500 <USB><MIDI Driver on PC> Sonar Unfortunately while the HD500 appears as a USB MIDI device it is restricted to just what is needed for HD Edit / Variax Workbench to work, and doesn't support normal stuff like Note-On messages. You need to get a MIDI interface for the computer which can be as simple as a USB MIDI adaptor like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Proxima-Direct%C2%AE-Keyboard-Laptop-Adapter/dp/B004IJ5FEU/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1383570896&sr=1-1&keywords=USB+MIDI, however as you generally get what you pay for you might want to consider something that costs a bit more
  3. "As far as communication with it's customers, Facebook is the go to avenue for that now a day's and Line 6 regularly put's up a post." There are a lot of people that have absolutely no interest in getting Facebook, and avoid anything that looks like a Facebook link Facebook is even blocked on the work network so I couldn't view it even if I wanted to. Not allowing general employees to participate in forums using an official identity is a general practice, but that doesn't mean that specific employees such as the Product Managers cannot join in if only to make it look as if Line6 is listening to anything on here at all. And IdeaScale - is there any indication that Line6 is doing anything at all? 586 Ideas submitted: In Review 0, In Progress 0, Complete = 1 (can anyone confirm that it is actually complete?) Nobody indication of duplicate removal, no clarification of the requirement, just silence. Digitech and Boss must think it is great!
  4. The answer is Not Really, or maybe yes.... Assuming that you mean Windows Officially the Windows Drivers only support a single output device at any time - whether over USB or directly connected. Unofficially there are things you can try such as ASIO4ALL and virtual audio cable (http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.htm) that might do the trick. (Google "windows multiple sound cards") I know in another thread the idea of using the software was not recommended by others for good reasons, but I would say that directing playback only to multiple devices is somewhat different from trying to combine inputs and outputs at the same time. Anyway if you want to try it then ASIO4ALL is free and VAC can be demoed for free and it can't hurt, but you might want to have a Restore point so you can revert to the original stable set-up. A more practical and reliable for live use solution might be to get a hardware digital recorder and to simply route the independent outputs as required. PC's on stage somehow are quite fragile and temperamental, while a hardware solution will generally not go wrong
  5. Better than that - the internal effects/amp assignment of the switches and the MIDI assignments are completely independent, so the same footswitch can do both at the same time
  6. I thought that POD HD and HD500 had compatible patches but with a different extension, but even if they don't you could try this patch converter to give you access to any HD custom tone, not just those created on the desktop: http://www.jzab.de/content/pod-hd
  7. Ahh, but you are forgetting: HD500 has sharc dsp optimised for audio transformation rather than a general purpose CPU so is potentially orders of magnitude better at IR processing This IR suggestion will replace at least the Cab and Mic simulations which might already be IR based The thing is we don't know whether the HD500 uses IR + Convolution or something else entirely, and those who do know either won't or can't say. So pretty much from the release of the HD series people have been saying "We want user IRs" and in all that time Line 6 have said nothing at all.
  8. "I've been using ASIO4ALL to tie in multiple devices. " Wow... I didn't know you could do that! And there is me switching between device specific drivers and completely ignoring an old M-Audio Quattro because they haven't updated the drivers in a decade. Going to have to investigate this a bit more. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb06/articles/pcmusician.htm
  9. No, Inputs 1 and 2 = HD500 L and R outputs. That is all that it supports
  10. does anyone know if they can use ASIO4ALL with the POD HD500? You could, but the Line 6 ASIO drivers provide all of the functionality that the HD500 can support. In terms of how it works think of the Computer I/O being inline just before the final outputs from the HD500. So output from the computer is merged with any HD500 output to whatever amplification you have, and what would have been the Output from the HD500 is what the Computer gets as input. If recording via USB/ASIO you generally want to turn off Input monitoring otherwise you hear the original HD500 signal + a delayed copy that has been to the computer and back again
  11. "with the POD you can have up to 4 instruments simultaneously connected and working: guitar, Variax, aux, mic" You missed FX Return L&R, so you can have 6 at one time. FX Loop is perhaps more practical as a general purpose input as it is balanced and stereo as long as you place it at the end of the chain
  12. Page B•5 of http://line6.com/data/6/0a06434dc1a55085c5d6532bf/application/pdf/POD%20HD500%20Advanced%20Guide%20v2.10%20-%20English%20(%20Rev%20A%20).pdf FS 1-8, Looper, Tap and Exp1 Toe can be configured to send definable MIDI messages when pressed - so could send patch change etc to Amplitube Exp 1 and 2 can be configured to send CC information To connect to Amplitube you have to be aware that the HD500 doesn't send MIDI over USB, so you need to have a MIDI interface that the Computer can see and connect the HD500 MIDI out to it.
  13. Two Notes video of HD500 into Torpedo CAB http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfXgcVJbtIs
  14. "if you hear any amp from 3 meters distance on stage, and if you put instead your ear very very close to the cab, sure you'll hear some differences, even if not as many as a mic could capture.." Yikes... :o There is also the beam thing - most guitarists set their tone with their ears way off axis because they don't have ears on their knees. So what if the audience gets ice pick treble beamed at them at least it sounds good to me....
  15. It would be nice to be able to define a single PC map - as a Patch attribute. What is currently output is fixed, but the problem is that if you connect up another unit such as a M13 then it has 48 "Scenes" (=Patches, split into 4 Folders or 12 each, the HD500 has 16 Banks of 4 Patches). If you want the M13 to extend the HD500 power by offloading some of the effects onto the M13 which is connected through the Effects Loop, you obviously connect the MIDI out from the HD500 into the MIDI in on the M13, so magically because there is nothing you can set on either device (other than channel), it appears to work: Now lets test it... HD500 Bank 1, Patch 1 => Folder 1, Scene 1 HD500 Bank 1, Patch 2 => Folder 1, Scene 2 .... HD500 Bank 2, Patch 1 => Folder 1, Scene 5 ... HD500 Bank 11, Patch 1 => Folder 4, Scene 5 HD500 Bank 15, Patch 3 => ???? Once you get past Bank 12 Patch 4 on the HD500 there is no equivalent on the M13, so you can't really use those higher Banks on the HD500, and whatever you do don't copy an HD500 patch to another location and expect it to work. But what if you didn't want to set up 48 separate Patches on the M13? What if you sensibly wanted 3 or 4 which consist of Reverb and a few other like Delay and Chorus with some minor variations. You then want to assign one of these 4 Scenes on the M13 to each of your HD500 patches.... well you can do this, but the Line 6 MIDI set-up won't let you change what is output by the HD500 as a Patch Change, so tough. The best that you can do is to dedicate a pedal on the HD500 to transmit the required Program Change when you press it, and to change the channel on one or other of the units to prevent the automatic changing. But this means two actions when what you really wanted was a single button press. All that is needed for this to work properly is to be able to define what Program Change message is transmitted when the HD500 Patch is changed. Shouldn't be that hard to achieve should it?
  16. You could try the above, and get acceptable results (depending on how important it is to really sound acoustic), but to get closer you need one of the following: 1) If you have stage space, then an electro acoustic guitar and a stage stand - like many pros have used over the years (including the other guitarist in my band) 2) If you can live with the body style not being a Tele, then a JTV variax (like me) and you also get several bodies including 12 strings and real-time alternative tunings 3) Piezo pickups such as used by players like Alex Lifeson when he needs electric and acoustic in the same song. http://www.graphtech.com/products/brands/ghost/ghost-pickups---guitar
  17. I think there is a case for the Tycobrahe Parapedal Wah as: Rare and expensive - http://www.vintageguitar.com/special-features/25-most-valuable-effects/ Used on famous recordings, like Black Sabbath (apparently) - http://vintageamps.com/plexiboard/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=38203&start=0
  18. The HD500 (and X3L etc) are stereo devices with a Left and Right output, this supports effects such as stereo delay, panning and some reverbs. connect the L+R outs of the HD500 into the L+R inputs of your NAD (or any other HiFi product) and you get a stereo sound. HD500 with dual paths and both Magnetic and Modelled inputs from a JTV can output for example and Acoustic Model to one side and Magnetic Pickups through a modelled amp onto the other side at the same time if you want it too. Just need to work out how to set it up properly - put a mono effect in the wrong place and all you get is mono, but that just means the same signal on L and R, so no need for a splitter.
  19. "My amplifier doesn't have a line input, so there goes that idea" Yes it does, but you might not have the right cable. The RCA inputs - standard connections for virtually all consumer audio equipment accept unbalanced Line Level input signals. The 1/4" Jacks on the HD500 output unbalanced line level signals. They are compatible All you need is a long stereo RCA cable like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/RCA-Phono-Plugs-GOLD-Mtr/dp/B0007RQY88/ref=sr_1_15?s=electronics-accessories&ie=UTF8&qid=1382618874&sr=1-15 And a couple of RCA to 1/4" Jack adaptors like these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/6-35mm-inch-Phono-Socket-Adaptors/dp/B008F7T2XQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1382618947&sr=1-1&keywords=rca+1%2F4+adaptor which you plug into the HD500 1/4" main outputs and then plug the RCA cable between them and something like the Aux or CD input on the NAD. Set HD500 to studio direct, and first time turn the master volume right down, select the correct input on the amp and then raise the volume levels. I have just done this with a Yamaha keyboard into a NAD 304 and it works perfectly. You really do want a proper VDI cable or "ethercon" if you want the more generic name - the unprotected connector is really quite fragile and you are warned that the provided cable is only for software updates. You don't have to get them from line6 e.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cat5E-10Mtr-Cable-Neutrik-Ethercon/dp/B0039IC6NE/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1382619330&sr=8-9&keywords=ethercon+cable or there is another thread here about them. Can't help with the money, but you did manage to purchase a JTV for starting with - look for HD500 rather than HD500x as there is little significant difference
  20. I had problems with a "normal" guitar stand as the VDI cable was at exactly where the supports was, so the guitar was at a silly angle and I didn't like the idea that the socket was taking the weight of the guitar. I now have one of these http://www.herculesstands.com/guitars/GS414B.html which supports the guitar from the head just like those hung on a wall - it is much more stable that it looks because for some reason the photo shows it extended for a bass or something when in practice it only needs extending up one step. Our Bass player has one of the double headed ones (GS422B).
  21. Unlike the earlier versions Workbench HD has a reasonable User guide: http://line6.com/dat...h ( Rev A ).pdf It doesn't explain why you should change some settings like capacitance. As well as the Tutorial 6 (above) there is also Tutorial 7 which covers alternate tunings and 12 strings which is a bit less relevant as things are different for JTVs, but the guitar theory is still applicable. To be fair the original source should be credited: http://www.vettaville.nl/vvworkbenchtutorials.html
  22. Unlike the earlier versions Workbench HD has a reasonable User guide: see "Adjusting Global String Levels" on page 16 in http://line6.com/data/6/0a06434c5bcd520d3ab6261d4/application/pdf/Workbench%20HD%20Pilot's%20Guide%20-%20English%20(%20Rev%20A%20).pdf
  23. If you mean Virtual Capo, then yes you can do it any time and you can overwriting any of the Alt Tuning slots, The alternative tuning is independent from the model selection (except for the one called "Model" which uses the tuning on the Model and "Standard" which doesn't do any pitch shifting). You could keep the predefined Alt Tunings that you use and overwrite the others with the most commonly used tunings you use not already covered, and you would only need to go into the preview mode for the rarely used alternative tunings
  24. Empty patch on HD500 saturating means the JTV is too hot an input - use workbench to turn it down. For normal guitars that is what the Pad switch is for or you lower the pickups. It is all very well the software automatically limiting, but really wish that we could see where it is happening. On the JTV there could be a "calibration process" where the individual string amplitudes are adjusted automatically for your current strings, specific set of peizos and your definition of "strum hard". Would at least take one bit of guesswork out of the process of making a JTV sound good.
  25. I agree that it is a pain that you can only octave or unison, but there is nothing stopping you doing second string Octave Up, and then custom tuning the whole string down an octave
