Looking for a small (affordable) MIDI control box for M9 to allow access to the 'scenes'. Would something like the Morningstar MC6 work? Any other good (less expensive?) options out there? http://www.morningstarfx.com/ thanks! edit - perhaps Disaster Area DMC is a good option? http://www.disasterareaamps.com/shop/dmc-3xl-gen3

With all due respect, I am guessing English is not your native language? and since I can't communicate in anything other than English, I will keep this polite and simple. You are clearly very, very confused about what Glenn is offering, selling, marketing, and it's making you upset. Let's set the record straight, because Glenn is 100% honest and exceedingly forthright! Not ONCE did Glenn make a single false claim about what he is doing with this latest 'boutique amp' preset package, though it's clear you did not comprehend the specifics, perhaps due to language barrier. I have edited your post down to the basics and responded to the main points: 1.) Yes 2.) Yes 3.) Yes 4.) Yes; sort of. He said the presets he is making do not represent actual new Line6 Helix amp models. In fact, he clearly says he uses existing Helix amp models in presets designed to emulate amps that are NOT currently offered in Helix. However, he NEVER states that he has made his own amp models, or that buying his presets will give you amp models not already in Helix. 5.) No; not exactly - you are misrepresenting his words. He said he made presets which emulate new amp models; he NEVER said he made new amp models. At the moment only Line6 can make new Helix amp models. Glenn clearly stated that he made these amp emulation presets combining Helix amp and preamp models with his own custom IR's. The merging of existing HX amp models with his IR overlays are the basis of these presets, which attempt to emulate the sound and response of amp models not already in Helix. 6.) Yes, and that is precisely what Glenn has stated. 7.) Yes, I will definitely buy these patches. And I will happily record some 'feedback' tones using them, and you will be "truly amazed"!:) I think maybe you also missed the portion where he mentions using a Line6 FH1500 to live monitor these tones while recording the demos? The interaction between his guitar and the FH1500 speaker monitor is what allows him to induce feedback. I hope this helps! Cheers!:)

Just for fun: What do you think is coming in the next update?
ColonelForbin replied to Bangha's topic in Helix
Yes, Exactly! You said it perfectly. I think ultimately you have more options and control with the stock Helix cabs, just have to spend more effort working the settings. To me, any givem set of stock cab and mic choice and settings basically equals any one IR. They both sound great; sometimes I just pop in a few IR's to play with ideas, knowing they are plug and play; as opposed to sculpting and dialing in comparable tones using the stock cabs. I for one am really stoked to check out Glenn's new patches where he overlays custom tone print style IR files with stock HX cabs. -

ColonelForbin replied to Bangha's topic in Helix
I like the stock cabs, and I also like using IR's. I have heard excellent examples of both, from a wide variety of sources! If you take the time to work with the stock cabs, dialing in good settings on them, they can easily hold their own - and even surpass - any IR out there. The one *really* cool thing you can do with IR's that you cannot do with stock cabs, is change them using Snapshots. I must say, that is a cool feature.. You assign the numeric choice of IR to be controlled by Snapshots, and then you can change the IR cab with every Snapshot; all kinds of cool stuff there. Anyway, as for a "few good sounds" to be found from using stock cabs + IR's, definitely check out the newest stuff Glenn DeLaune is doing, overlaying IR's on top of stock cabs! Way cool stuff. These links below are all using stock cabs PLUS adding Glenn's special sauce IR process. The stock Helix cab is the core of the cab sound, and the IR modifies and overlays on top of, but does not replace the stock cab: -
Friedman + Fryette PS2 + Helix + IR's = awesome

No but I will! -
I thought there is a setting somewhere in Helix to tell the PC messages to start at 1 or 0? I just did a brief search of the manual but am not finding that bit.. Also watch out for MIDI CC#128! According to the manual:(rev.D, page 58) MIDI CC#: 128 Value: 0-63: Oh; 64-127: Nooo "Helix achieves self-awareness and starts poking fun of that face you make during the solo"

So, I have been spending some time the last few weeks overhauling my 'regular' pedalboard, but just recently had a cool 'brain spark' and brought Helix back into the mix in a very cool and satifying usage, a bit off the usual trail. I've been running the pedalboard through my Friedman 1x12 combo (50 watt Runt), and attenuating/reamping it with the Fryette powerstation (v2). After going through exhaustive pedal placement last weekend and this weekend; lots of time moving pedals around, adding power supplies, and correcting cable troubles (good old George L's!) it occured to me to do the following: -Run the XLR out from the Fryette into the Helix; send the mic input to both paths, and run them through different / multiple IR's! I started by messing with adding some reverb, delay, post IR in Helix, but have kept that minimal thus far. Needless to say, the combination is potent! You can run two 2048 sample IR's, or FOUR 1024 IR's! I started with the four setup, but gravitated back to the two IR preset. Going to try running it through the HX cabs next.. Might have to try dual double HX cabs! Anyway, super cool - I realize Helix can do a whole lot more than it's doing in this situation, but as it is being used now, allows me to record several different tracks: -USB7 dry guitar (send extra 1/4" off the wireless (G70) receiver to Helix guitar in -USB8 XLR dry (from Fryette, power amp, no cab model or IR) -USB 1/2: IR1 stereo with HX delay and reverb -USB 3: IR1 with no HX FX panned left -USB 4: IR2 with no HX FX panned right -USB 5/6: IR2 stereo with HX delay and reverb I've got my M9 mounted to a pedaltrain jr. board with two Mission expression pedals; that is my FX loop board for the amp. I haven't tried running it in the FX loop of the Fryette vs the Friedman, but really still a fantastic workhorse of a pedal modeler! Love the M9, it still holds it own, long after it's release. Anyway, attempting to record the IR signals without monitoring them; still working out how to do that. I can monitor IR 1 'stereo' (with HX FX) going to USB 1/2 by choosing "multi" which is actually quite effective. Also, since you can change the IR slot # using snapshots, you can set up several different pairs of IR's. Been using the Justin York Ownhammer pack, the Fremen IR's also sound amazing in this rig, and messing with some 3Sigma. Tempted to check out some of the new Ownhammer Marshall IR's that came out recently! Anyway, in conclusion (I tend to go on a bit :)) this is a stellar way to use Helix to capture tube amp + pedalboards, paired with the Fryette. Can be silent recording - you can just monitor the Helix / IR signal with no sound going to the amp speaker, or you can listen to both - which sounds quite nice! Also, I paired up my 8ohm DT25 1x12 cab with this set for a while, and that sounded killer too! I must admit; the Friedman shares a very similar aesthetic to the DT25 cab!! The ohms are mismatched, so not an ideal pairing. The Friedman uses a 16ohm speaker; so I ran the Friedman power amp at 16 ohms, and the Fryette speaker out at 4ohms. Google tells me that pairing a 16 ohm cab with an 8 ohm cab in parallel yields approx 5.6 ohms; and you would want to choose the ohm setting that is less than or equal to that digit. Typically it's more straight forward; with the DT25 + DT25 cab, they are both 8 ohm, so both get equal volume. With the 16 ohm + 8 ohm speaker pair, the 8 ohm cab apparently pulls about 2/3 of the power, leaving the 16 ohm cab with a little less, but they sure sound nice together! Sizing isn't matched so they won't stack; but they rock hard side by side! All right, back to previously scheduled guitar playin' already in progress... :) p.s. photos!

I imagine it's because the L6link is summing left and right to mono

Hi All - Anyone tried a fryette power station with a Helix?
ColonelForbin replied to HoldsworthAM's topic in Helix
Not yet, but soon! I picked up a Friedman 50w tube amp recently, and I pre-ordered a Fryette PS2 from Musicians Friend a few days ago; should have it in a couple of weeks. Primary use for the PS2 is with the Friedman (it's the 50 watt Runt combo 1x12) but having finally wrapped my head around how the PS2 works, I am really pysched to run Helix into it and see how Helix through that PS2 6L6 50w power amp sounds through my DT25 extension cab! For the moment, doing a dual tone with my other pedalboard going through the Friedman in the center, and the Helix stereo into a pair of L3m on either side of the Friedman. I have been occasionally using Helix with my DT25 combo at rehearsal, and it sounds decent; but the EL84's definitely color the sound; though you can dial it in pretty well when you start tweaking with the topo settings. Certainly a nice change in sound from running only FRFR! Anyway, the PS2 has 2x6L6 tubes, and it is designed to be as "neutral" a tube power amp as possible. So, it really should not color the Helix too much; but I don't know yet - but I imagine it's quite likely that Helix will sound stellar with the PS2! I think I will just need better cab options more than anything. Will report back once I have had a chance to give it a go~ Cheers! p.s. - side note on the Helix+pedalboard+Friedman+L3 rig; getting some cool things with them together! I have been doing my regular pedalboard 4CM with the Friedman, using one G70 wireless receiver. I then run the XLR out from the Friedman to the Helix XLR in, and record USB 8. I have a second G70 wireless (receiver) connected to the Helix, so I can also get the dry guitar on USB7, and the stereo Helix tones on USB 1/2. I pump some Superior Drummer through the Helix, get the Helix volume dialed in with the drums, turn up the Friedman - and the super cool key to all of that, is that the G70 transmitter simultaneously transmits with no latency and no ground loop and no buzz, no hum or noise and no dropouts - to both receivers. This lets me record everything to it's own track; I can turn up or down the drums in relation to the Helix patch; and then use the Helix master volume to balance the levels coming from the L3 speakers with the Friedman. I use the Helix tuner; and if I want to only hear Friedman and drums, can send Helix guitar tones to USB1/2 only and mute them through the L6link send. I can even monitor the Friedman XLR out if I want to see how it sounds isolated; when you are setting the tuner, you can choose pretty much anything to be the tuner source, including the mic/xlr input, and you just unmute the signal. Make sure it sounds good with the Helix mic gain level; then go back to muting that signal for 'record only' purposes. -
What expression pedals do you guys use with the Helix?
ColonelForbin replied to Rocco_Crocco's topic in Helix
I just had an 'ah hah!' moment there sitting at work reading this thread! I was working on incorporating the Mission exp pedal with some Helix patches yesterday, and ready a different thread where Spikey detailed his wah settings to do the 'heel down wah off'. Some of my patches have exp 1 as the wah or volume by default, others it's exp 2; but anyway, I set up the Mission exp as the volume and the Helix exp as the wah. Used that setting and works great! Now I just need to reverse the exp assignments so the Mission exp 2 is the wah, and the Helix exp 1 is volume. -
I literally just tried this out on a Helix patch one minute ago, and this wah trick is super sweet, thanks Spikey!! And yes, it does 'fade out' the mix of the wah effect as the pedal travels towards the heel, so you can lose some of that weird low end lwo mid frequency muddy flutter that the wah would normally do in that position. For me, I never like that low end of the wah travel anyway, so this is perfect; since I prefer it for high and upper/central mid effect; and it sure makes using the wah easier on the fly! I think the way to go would be test these setting with a few of your 'go to' wah models, and see how it impacts them, as opposed to without. Make a duplicate wah block, and set one to just use the 'regular' settings, and the other to use these settings. I've got this on the Chrome custom, sounds fantastic!

Sweetwater 36month financing; today till Sept.6
ColonelForbin replied to ColonelForbin's topic in Helix
I watched a bunch of the free Lock'n webcast over this past weekend. Of all the bands, including Phish, I like the first day opening band the best of the bunch! Though Sudan Tedeschi is amazing, and sounded stellar with Phil Lesh. I was hoping for some groovy Ween-Phish collaboration, but was not meant to be, other than this cool shot of Mickey playing Trey's guitar backstage. Oh yeah - and who was the opening act for the 2016 Lock'N festival? VULFPECK!!!!!!!!!!!!! So good. -
Sweetwater 36month financing; today till Sept.6
ColonelForbin replied to ColonelForbin's topic in Helix
Yeah, G.A.S. got the better of me.. I resisted the urge yesterday when it was the end of the 24month financing; checked it again today, and DANG they are doing 36 month, and limited time. That $*%& works every friggin' time. On the plus side, I'll have a Friedman Runt 50 combo in my hands tomorrow, so I've got that goin' for me, which is nice :) Gunga Lagunga! p.s. On a totally unrelated note, Phish is Webcasting three days from Colorado this weekend! -
Not like this helps with the G.A.S., but I just saw that Sweetwater is running a short term 36 month financing window, now till Sept.6th... http://www.sweetwater.com/financing/ http://www.sweetwater.com/store/manufacturer/Line_6/ Which does apply to things like Helix demo units... http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Helixd

Right on! Yeah, some really cool possibilities there. Spiraling into infinity, like a - what's that thing called? Oh yeah! A Helix.... :) Tea is served at noon!
-
Yeah that's right! Lock'n fest day two set to start in about 1/2 hour; Vulfpeck is on mid-day. All weekend FREE webcast! Some killer bands in there; Ween and Phish tonight, some Keller Williams Saturday and Sunday morning; Phil Lesh in there somewhere too, nonstop music! The stage ROTATES the next band, which is crazy cool. Ween was awesome last night, and Umprhey's were technical brilliance as usual; but Vulfpeck absolutely won the day! Opening slot for the whole festival; do yourself a favor, if you haven't already, check out Vulfpeck. Crazy good! Cheers!!! http://nugs.tv/lockn/ http://www.locknfestival.com/schedule

SWEET! Very glad to hear that; I was hoping it was just user error on my part. I had been at it for about 10 hours at that point and was crosseyed and helix :) thanks!

I need to do some more critical recording/listening to be sure, but it *seems* they switch instantly and seemlessly. There is no discernable audio dropout. It's worth noting it appears you can only control one parameter of the IR using snapshots; though I may be wrong. I tried to set both the IR select and the IR volume, seems to be a one or the other kind of thing. Which does limit your combinations of IR's to a certain extent; they would need to be within the same realm of volume and low / hi cut. EDIT: I WAS WRONG! YAY!!! :) That was getting me stuck, since each IR might need slight tweaks from others to get it sitting just right. I can see how changing up the mic setting on the L6cabs would in essence give you a similar experience to changing IR's. Though using the IR select, you can use four snapshots to change between four totally different cabinet, speaker and mic combinations, which can be quite useful for setting up a patch with a clean amp sound plus three crunch/gain/lead type sounds on snapshots. I am working today; caffeinated and distracted by thoughts of IR's and snapshots! Cheers ya'all!
-
100% YES!
-
iT'S SO COOL!!! You can make drastic changes; say between a clean Fender and crunchy-lead tone Marshall - or even just subtle variations between similar cab tones
-
My apologies if this is old news; I just discovered the joys of assigning the IR select parameter to the Snapshots.. WOW! Way. way cool.
-
Yeah; the IR choice is critical; and really does 'shape' the sound. I find the guitar choice makes a noticeable difference, but on well dialed in patches, it doesn't become a make or break - no longer works with this guitar but sounds great with that one kind of thing - only, a patch more attuned to the pairing makes the playing feel better as much as sound better. IR's are a powerful tool! I just realized you can assign the IR choice, in effect the cabinet choice, to the snapshots. (You can't change the L6 cab choice with snapshots, only parameters.) That's a total rabbit hole! Being able to change up cabinets by toggling IR's. Seems to be an effective way to do this; the IR that is on stays on until the IR being loaded has loaded; so you don't get much whoosh or dropout as you can if you are trying to change between very overdriven / lead tones to totally clean, different amp, etc.
-
This is totally unrelated; but I am having some cool sounds happen by assigning snapshots as a controller for the IR choice! I am guessing I am late to the party in this discovery, but still = it's cool finding these little nuggets of awesome with Helix! Seems to switch really well; much better use of DSP! Especially useful for patches where you want four snapshots, along the lines of clean/ crunch/ gain/ lead Change cabinets (IR) with each snapshot; very cool! I am going back into the earlier batches of Glenn's presets and storing snapshots in them. I was messing with the Santana patch and realized I could get an IR on path 2A, so I bypassed the cab and started using the Fremen IR's, and figured, why not assign the snapshots to select different IR's! So easy. getting to the end of a very long day of playing with Helix, loading new patches, programming some, just got Glenn's artists presets vol.II this morning so having major fun with those! slowly (begrudgingly) turning down the volume; it's after 10 now. I'm in the basement, and the sound doesn't really escape; carpeted / finished basement; but, I am using a pair of L3m as the monitors, and they sound really nice cranked up with Helix! I had it rocking down here around 3:30 this afternoon. cheers ya'all
-
I had today off from work and the house to myself, so I spent pretty much all day jamming on my Helix; and I stumbled upon these killer patches by warrenm that were just uploaded to Customtone today! THANKS WARREN! These rock! :) http://line6.com/customtone/profile/warrenm/ (Only thing you will need to do is load IR's into them; he doesn't use the L6cabs) However, that leads to my next cool discovery: I loaded some Fremen IR's into the warrenm presets, and VOILA! Instant awesome. I just spent the last hour just jamming on these four patches. Mostly the 'Deluxe Clean', which I paired with the Fremen IR #76 (Vox2). It gets all nasty and gritty on the humbucker and cleans up beautifully on the single coils. He has these quite perfectly dialed in for a strat HSS style guitar; which I've struggled to get sounding right with other patches, so it was really a sweet (free!) discovery. I am using a Fender HSS with the S1 switch, so tapping that in on the single coil pickups adds a little of the 'grit back in.. Really cool. Anyway. I'm gonna go jam on his plexi patch now, see ya! Cheers!

Helix Full Amps Into DT In "Low Power" Mode is Awesome!!!
ColonelForbin replied to roscoe5's topic in Helix
Yes! I can't imagine how loud DT50 must be; DT25 is stupid loud when running L6link from Helix!.. Gotta try this; I didn't dig in as deep and gave up really quick trying to do Helix preamps to DT back to Helix to IR, or Helix cab, etc. I was liking Helix too much without limiting it just to incorporate the DT. So It just use patches designed to be used FRFR; full amps, with cabs, ir, etc. I've run the Glenn patches, Fremen's stuff, they all sound killer into DT! I also bypassed everything on the DT first using DTedit; though I don't know how much that really makes a difference; since I am not using the DT25 XLR out. I am thinking with all of the DT preamps and cabs bypassed, LVM just acts as a dB cut or volume pad somewhere in the signal; I don't think it actually lowers the poweramp power. I am guessing Helix via L6link is hitting DT as a hot signal and going to LVM gives more headroom so you can crank the actual DT tubes more; though not too much or you start to over color the Helix modeling. Keep on with the reports! Definitely digging this
