  1. I don't know why it took me so long to get around to rigging up my Helix with my tube amp! And yeah; the four cable method template messed up slightly at first, but then after I looked at the super serial template I sorted out what I needed to do. I ended up using the Helix 3/4 to do the final 'send' to the amp's fx return, instead of using the Helix 1/4" out. I suppose if I was doing two amps to get stereo the 1/4" mains would make more sense. I ended up routing a direct out from my amp back to the Helix to go through path 2B, so I make 1A > 1B > 2A all serial, with the Helix fx loop 1/2 in the middle somewhere, not sure path it's on, I think in the middle of 1B. You can split those up however you like, and in whichever way you are best likely to use having redundant or extra fx blocks that you can toggle on and off using snapshots when there are not enough footswitches to assign every effect to an individual on/off state. I typically have a compressor, noise gate, barely noticeable reverb and delay, eq, timmy, etc. 'always on' or on/off based on snapshot only; then add additional drive, boost, delay and verb to individual foot switches. Ten switches mode is great! Just got there last night actually.. Instrument level I think for all the send and returns. And I love being able to change the amp channel with snapshots! Hard to beat amp gain; though the Helix overdrives sound really good when you dial them in for your rig. I might experiment with putting some delay and reverb pedals in the remaining fx loops; have a Strymon Blue Sky and SA Nemesis that might be intriguing.. I also like that the master volume doesn'y have anything to do with the signal that way; just set up volume pedal blocks where needed. I imagine you could get very deep using 'transparent' IR's to place after the preamp before the poweramp to color your actual amp tone using an IR. I messed about using EQ, high and low cut, and the global EQ; you can seriously dial in your rig with this thing. It's impressive. I've had it for quite some time, only ever did the FRFR / direct, etc. Eye opener to say the least! Can't wait to go home and jam on it tonight cheers!
  2. I tried this and overall like it - though I ended up not using the main 1/4" on Helix at all. I did a serial path to fx loop 1/2 out to amp, and back from amp, then send 3/4 to go to amp fx loop return. Primarily, because then I also sent the XLR direct out from my amp back to Helix through the looper and out to the mains (l6link, XLR, 1/4" mains). My question; is there any quality level compromise not using the 1/4" out for any of the sends? Any kind of summing (or not) to mono that is or isn't happening one way or the other? I sort of modded the super serial and 4 cable method templates as a starting point; got to the point where I was able to use the looper out to a pair of L3m, and record the looper playback to one track with the 'noodling' overdub, etc on it's own track (USB 8, dry mic input from amp) I'm definitely getting all sorts of noise, using an Ebtech to kill some ground issues, bit with the USB in, it seems to add more noise. Noise gate kills most of it, but it's fairly obvious that it's gating all this crackly noise. I know I need to check the power supplies make sure they are all on the same Furman, and maybe try lifting different sends with the Ebtech, or using the Helix ground lift.. All in all, it's awesome! Helix as a pedalboard with a tube amp totally rocks, and goes so far beyond it's insane. So easy to reconfigure, make copies of your board. It's really friggin stellar. Here's what I have so far for a patch: http://line6.com/customtone/tone/3305747/ need to set it up for ten footswitches, four snapshots on top row, instrument level for the send and returns, etc. Remember, master volume doesn't do anythign for the amp, just the looper / main outs. would work with any amp that has XLR cab sim out, and a TS channel changing switch. Might need some edit, depending on amp and needs a lot of work with dialing it at proper volumes. I stopped working this at 3am, so there ya go; it's glitchy I'm guessing.. cheers!
  3. I just got around to wiring up my Helix as a 'pedalboard only' with my Friedman (Runt 50) amp. It's bloody fantastic! Not using any Helix amp or cab modeling; just FX, snapshots, routing, and channel changing on the Friedman. Plus sending the cab model direct out from the Friedman back to the Helix! Win-Win...
  4. how are you routing from path 1A to path 1B, and then to path 2A and 2B? Take a look at the 'super serial' template; notice how they drag the path down to 1B, then route into 2A, but at the end of 1A they have the output set to multi; but also set the leve to -128 or something, essentially muting that portion of the signal, so it only goes serial from 1A into 1B then into 2A and presumably 2B. They did the same thing for the output on 2A; it terminates in a muted 2A 'multi' output, while the signal path flows down to 2B.
  5. Yeah buddy! I tested that last night with my Runt 50; same channel changer as the Runt 20. I set up a Helix patch to use as pedalboard 'only' to the Runt (4 cable method) and then sent the XLR from the Runt back to the Helix, through the Helix looper, and out the XLR / Line6Link to some FRFR speakers. I set up a footswitch to toggle the Runt channel, and also set up that toggle in some snapshots. Sooooooo awesome! No; use a TS cable not TRS for the amp channel changer
  6. Ebtech makes some reasonably priced ground lift boxes; I use one with Helix and tube amp(s) when I am doing 4CM and such. This is what I'm using; but you really only need one channel: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Hum Behringer makes one for 1/3 the price; easy investment to sort out if that is actually the issue! https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HD400
  7. I think Source Audio Ventris Reverb is going to blow all of those away, and will be killller in a stereo fx loop with my Helix... Dual DSP for preset spillover. I'll just stop right there :) (I've already got their Nemesis delay, and it's quite good, but not dual DSP and no preset spillover..)
  8. I was in the Chicago GC store a few days ago, and they have a Helix LT set up in the middle of the room, connected (in mono) to a Powerstage 170 into a Line6 4x12 cab. I liked the sound much better with the cab sims off... Not like they sounded bad on; just, seems like it would be a good way to run a split rig, and put the cab sims after the send to the Power Block. That being said, they made me come turn it down - twice! :) In their defense, I was probably playing loud as &%#F%(&*#%$ Definitely pleasantly surprised. I've been gravitating towards trying my Helix as pedalboard only into my tube amp(s), though this could be a cool way to keep the amp modeling and split out a stage rig that could be mic'd and also have a direct send with cab modeling to personal monitor and to FOH.. Could be a best of both worlds for the picky soundguy that "must" mic your rig..
  9. They also make the ASC-12, which is same as ASM, but in an amp shaped enclosure (rather than the floor wedge shape of the ASM) Would be substantial investment to get a pair of them if you need stereo! Also; for what it's worth, it takes XLR input only, so you might need to do some messing with cables and such to route to the mains in stereo and to the ASM or ASC in mono. http://friedmanamplification.com/monitors/asc-12

  12. I have had better luck running my active 5 string basses into the Helix 1/4" AUX input. Was getting distortion on low B string with and without input pad on guitar input.
  13. Just used my full Stagesource rig all connected with L6Link.at a gig (sans Helix); pair of L3m for the mains, pair of L2t for monitors, and M20d mixer. Line6 link is stellar and across multiple platforms. At my home 'studio' have Helix connected to the L3m and a pair of Yamaha HS5; and as soundcard. Playback / mixing / jamming on Helix, whatever - great speakers.. Love 'em!
  14. Just wanted to send a quick update; the G70 three transmitters for three guitars switching system worked flawlessly for me at the gig on Saturday. Acoustic was routed to PA and to pedalboard > amp; electric guitars went through pedalboard > amp only. All in all, a fair bit of Line6 got used! A pair of L3m's for the mains, two L2t's for the floor monitors, and the M20d mixer. So very easy to mix from stage! Set the things you need to be able to use the monitors to mix the mains with to 'linked mode', which offers the side benefit of when you mute a channel not being used, such as cajon mic or guest vocal mic (had both of those on Saturday!) it also mutes them in the monitor mix. No guesswork about the relative levels. Good vocal levels through mains and monitors; since I was wireless was able to wander in the room during soundcheck and a couple times during the set to check the levels. Ran the three guitars through my pedalboard with the G70 transmitter at the front. The two electric guitars were routed to the pedalboard + amp only; the acoustic went direct to PA with XLR, and also routed through the pedalboard to my amp. That was wayyy fun. Autowah on acoustic, plus; my FX loop board is a Line6 M9 with a pair of expression pedals. The mods, delays and verbs sounded stellar on the acoustic through the amp, with the dry acoustic on top through the PA. No dropouts, no issues, no problems, didn't have to change batteries, left the transmitters on for 3+ hours; set to snooze mode. G70 worked great for me! One last thing; another trick I didn't use at this gig, but works great - you can use one transmitter and two receivers to route through dual rigs and since it's wireless, no ground loop issues. Set both receivers to the same channel as the transmitter. Technically, you could still also do the multi-transmitter switching thing, you would just set up the same three scenes on both receivers; IE, for my rig, acoustic on channel 1, strat channel 2, prs channel 3. Then you would just have to do the extra receiver switch up, but that would take like one extra second. Would also be interesting, in that you would have two "direct" sources to output, IE both XLR outs from the two G70 receivers would be sending the same dry guitar signal. Good way for tracking, if you need to capture dry guitar. I guess I will have to test that out! One pedalboard to the Friedman amp, one to the PRS amp, and dry out to Helix. Too much? No such thing! Lol... :) Cheers ya'all!!
  15. The new Helix firmware with a bunch of bass models, hello! Thank you very much! Perfect timing, I just got a Quilter Bass Block 800 and an Ampeg 1x15 portaflex cab. Incidentally, the Quilter is thunderous. Haven't had time to test with Helix yet; pretty psyched to do so. Rattled the whole house with this little amp into an Ampeg 1x15. Didn't get it anywhere near all the way up.. And the Quilter is crazy light; weighs a whopping 4 pounds. Really! To be specific, it weighs only 3.7lbs, but has a little carry bag. So, 4lbs.. Maybe. Comes with an extra long locking power cable; thing is at least 10' long, maybe more. The amp is Class D, and pushes a true 800w at 4ohms, and can go as low as 2.5 ohms. Need to get this thing and my Helix to the jam spot, try that with my buddies new 4x10 Aguilar cab!! Cheers!
  16. All I can say, is my pair of G70's have performed remarkably well. I updated the firmware immediately; so never had any dropout issues. I actually got my rig together yesterday for my gig on Saturday. I'm going to be switching between and acoustic and two electric guitars. I have two G70s' and I bought an extra transmitter when they were on sale last year, and so with the three transmitters (set to 'snooze' mode so they power down when not in use / sensing movement), I was able to set up three scenes on my G70; which is the front end of my pedalboard. I've got it set to only send the acoustic to the XLR out; but send all guitars to the 1/4" out into the pedalboard. I've been really digging running the acoustic 'dry' directly to the PA; the XLR out of the G70 is excellet; I compared it A/B to a Radial Pro48; very similar overall output level; sound quality on par; headroom with an acoustic in the wrong DI or direct to a mixer can sound really bad. A good DI like the Radial makes it sound much better! The G70 does the same thing; one less piece of $100 gear, which in this case works particularly well for this gig; I've only got two of the Radial DI's - will use on for the other guitarist, and the other for my bass DI. Anyway, back to the G70! I set up the three scenes, so all I need to do is turn down the guitar or mute the acoustic, switch to the next instrument I want to play. I've got the wireless transmitters attached to the straps of each guitar with Levy's wireless holders; works perfectly with the G70 shape. My *only* gripe with the G70 isn't really a gripe with the unit; just, the included locking cable is a bit short and not as robust as it could be. But that's just a cable; I get it. Thing would cost more if they included a higher end cable. I've got a couple of locking cables from Bestronics that are pretty nice, they do straight or right angle, and you choose the length; though they're a bit expensive.. http://btpa.com/L6G70S-II.html http://btpa.com/L6G70R-II.html Well, that's all I've got for now. Going to use the M20d mixer with L3m mains and L2t monitors; DI boxes to the PA for the acousic guitars, Sennheiser e609 mics on the amps. Anyway, I will report back how the G70's perform! I'm hopeful; but that's easy to dial in at home, get to a gig, and have unforseen issues. Plan B; which is also a strength of the G70, is plug straight into the G70 side input. I positioned it on my board at the front right, so I can do just that, if I have a wireless problem. Side note to that; discovered this awesome 'silent jack' cable! Check it out - you can plug and unplug without making any sound while 'live'.. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Livewire/Elite-Instrument-Cable-with-Silent-Jack.gc Oh, and one more thing. Snooze mode! I hadn't read the manual properly; snooze mode is very useful when using multiple transmitters with different channels on the receiver. IE, acoustic is channel 1, strat is channel 2, PRS is channel 3. Snooze mode is when you half open the transmitter- it sort of has two open levels, first is slightly open that exposes the channel change switch and the snooze switch, Slide it so there is a little moon exposed. Turn down volume on the guitar, put it down, change to a different guitar, and after two minutes that transmitter will power down into 'standby' mode to conserve battery. Pickup that guitar and the transmitter wakes up in about 1 second. I typically use the G70 receiver to mute by going to tuner mode, but with the electric guitar volume off, you can pretty easily switch guitars as long as you leave the transmitters attached to the guitars, and not to your belt. Note on batteries; I have been getting excellent battery life with these lithium Energizer batteries. A bit expensive; like, four batteries for $10 or something. But they last a long time. Only downside; is once you notice the transmitter battery life indicator on the receiver start to drop, it seems to drop very quickly. Keep spare batteries on hand.. Ok, now I'm gone. Check you later; Cheers!
  17. Do my eyes deceive, or is that the glow of a Helix on stage? (near middle/ right, bottom of photo) (photo credit from John Mayer band at Madison Square Garden, John Mayer instagram) https://www.instagram.com/p/BSiK-18F8jw/
  18. Need some help here; jam on Friday, going to let my buddy (the bassist) use my Helix for FX; he doesn't want to mess with amp modeling yet. Run parallel paths? Any good presets on Customtone? I will search up and make a quick and dirty fx only patch for him, probably on the fly there, but be curious if anyone else is already there! He is playing an Ibanez 5 string active bass into a Hartke amp head; 1x15 and 4x10 cab stack. Cheers!
  19. My apologies if this thought has landed in the wrong forum; please adjust location if needed! :) I just stumbled across this interesting new 2017 acoustic guitar from Yamaha (A3M); they've got an acoustic guitar with onboard digital preamp system that emulates room and microphone models. Close and wide toggle for the mic placement, and a blend dial for piezo and mic modeling balance. Intriguing! Makes me wonder about the possibility of a Yamaha-Line6 acoustic Variax project? http://usa.yamaha.com/products/musical-instruments/guitars-basses/el-ac-guitars/a-series/a3m/ https://www.premierguitar.com/articles/Yamaha_A_Series_A3M_Acoustic_Guitar_Review http://www.strumviews.com/Yamaha-A-series-acoustic-electric-guitar-review-SRT-Studio-Response-Technology "The S.R.T System 63 Modeling Pickup System is impressive, too. It features models of three killer microphones—a Neumann U67, a Neumann KM56, and a Royer R-122—with two mic-placement options for each (selected with the Focus/ Wide button), a 3-band EQ, a Blend knob, a Resonance knob, a built-in tuner, and a feedback-control system. Easy to use and navigate, it offers rich, deep, natural tone, offers a really cool way to mix up your amplified tones. The Focus (close-mic) option models the sound of a microphone situated a few inches from the guitar. The Wide option emulates the sound of two mics—one close and another a few feet away. The models are accessed via a 3-position slider. You can EQ the tone to taste as well, but I loved the sound so much flat that I rarely did. Each model is truly unique, and you can really hear a difference between Focus and Wide, too, so you have a lot of jumping-off points for achieving a mood or playing to the acoustic qualities of a performance space." The Neumann U67 - great for wide EQ and any playing style, giving the player a large diaphragm condenser studio mic sound The Neumann KM56 - great for crisp, high end where detailed playing must stand out- including crisp lead guitar, scales, finger style picking, and flat-picking where clarity and distinction are needed. The Royer R-122 - a ribbon style microphone is great for rounding out and smoothing the tones for Jazz and Blues playing - this microphone model gives a warmer, wider and smooth tone response for the more mellow acoustic sweetness
  20. I've got some catching up to do; I haven't updated since November..
  21. Tell him to treat your Helix the same way he would a keyboard line. Have him run your Helix's (what is the plural of "Helix" anyway??) into DI boxes. That will also prevent any issues with phantom power from his gear messing with your Helix.

  24. Seems reasonable; I have the PS2, and it doesn't output line in signals or fx return signal to the line out; only signal passed into the amp in. So, in theory what you are saying *should* work?!... I've had some fun using the PS2 with my amp, then running the XLR out from the PS2 into Helix, and built a patch to route that signal through four different IR's and send each to a separate recording track in ProTools... Helix is powerful! I've also used the PS2 as an amp to my 2x12 cab, running Helix to the PS2 out to cab. Depending where I put the send, also worked well to run full 'wet' stereo signal out via L6link to pair of L3m behind / to left and right of the 2x12 cab. Get some cool blends that way too! But I had not tried what you are suggesting.. hmmm.. keep us posted!
