  1. I managed to crash Helix for the first time, last night at rehearsal; no clue what caused it. Power off/back on and it eventually booted back up and worked ok.
  2. Interesting idea; if you already have the Firehawk FX pedal, and you also use the modeling on the FH1500, you could have a dual rig in one kind of thing, if you added the soon-to-be-available FBV3 - the foot controller for the FH1500. Side by side FBV3 controller and Firehawk FX pedal. I am guessing you can make some kind of patch on the Firehawk FX that would send a dry copy of your guitar to the guitar on the FH1500 - it has an fx loop that can be toggled between instrument and line level (you would want instrument level for the guitar input on the FH1500). Then you just run the Firehawk FX XLR or 1/4" outputs, in stereo, to the monitor inputs of the FH1500, and balance the levels. Be a pretty sweet way to get some cosmic delay and reverb spillover, as you morph from a patch on one Firehawk to the other Firehawk. Biggest issue I can see is needing two Bluetooth phones/tablets, etc if you want to be able to control both units with the app at the same time. I would imagine that would work, not sure if Bluetooth connections like that have a proximity interference with each other though..
  3. Try connecting Helix 1/4" out -> to the FX loop return of your hot rod deVille; use full Helix amp and cab models, and bypass the hot rod preamp
  4. I just noticed this; and Sweetwater prices now reflect the rebate / price drop! Good time to get some DT action! :) http://line6.com/promos/ http://l6c-acdn.line6.net/data/6/0a06439ceca456feab6aaa231/application/pdf http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DT25-112Cab $199 http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DT25-HD $699 http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DT25-112 $799
  5. The direct out works great! Also - the direct out mic model is set within the DT25 and has nothing to do with the mic model set in the HD500 patch. If you want to change the DT25 XLR out mic model, use DtEdit: http://rome2.github.io/dtedit/ You start with a MIDI connection between your computer and the DT25 - which is also how you would update the firmware if needed: http://line6.com/support/page/kb/_/amplifiers/dt50dt25/dt25dt50-firmware-installation-instructions-r120 This allows you to customize the onboard 'stand alone' preamp models that are loaded into the 8 slots (A I,II,III,IV and B I, II, III, IV). You can also switch up the onboard reverb per channel - which is also independent from any reverb in your HD500 patch. (It defaults to I think the '63 spring). You can also customize the power amp settings, including the topology (I,II,III,IV) - not to be confused with the I-IV shown on the face of the amp, which do different things depending on how it's wired up. - If you are using it in standalone mode, those I-IV switches toggle between the onboard 'voicings' which are pairings of preamp model, cab model, and power amp settings. With the default 4 amp models (Same for A and B) they also happen to be the matching topology. IE, voicing I is topo I. HOWEVER, since you can reconfigure the standalone to be whatever you want - including the topo, this depends on how you MIDI configure it. - if you are using L6 Link to the HD500, toggling those switches then instead does actually toggle the topology, and keeps the preamp/cab choice as defined by the HD500 patch. (unless you toggle to channel B, which then uses the onboard DT preamp/cab models) I also use my DT25 with a stompbox pedalboard, so I spent a bunch of time using DtEdit to explore the standalone options - very cool amp overall. Quick note on using JTV acoustic modells with the DT25: The best thing to do is track down that patch mentioned earlier - by Radatats. Or using DtEdit disable the amp and cab model on two of the slots on the DT, such as A-I and B-I. By doing this, when using L6Link from HD to DT, if you didn't and chose no amp model in your HD500 patch, it would default to the onboard / standalone amp model loaded in the DT. When you disable the amp/cab model in the DT, and chose no amp model in the HD500, you then are processing the JTV acoustic signal with no preamp - it sounds way better this way! Essentially a direct tap to the Bogner tube amp / power amp portion. With Radatats patch, it does all of that bypassing within the HD programming so no need to use MIDI on the amp. This, for reference, is also how to use Helix with DT25 - bypass all the DT amp and cab models, send the Helix direct to the Bogner power amp, which actually sounds quite amazing! So you got a good amp there, and it will serve you well in more than one use, for sure!
  6. Gotta love that!! Sweet, great amp - still love mine - which does quite well with Helix, it's just not exactly the same as it works with HD500. One quick note - get an AES/EBu (line6 link) digital cable (looks exactly like an XLR cable. but uses 110ohm digital cable) for connecting your HD500 to the DT25.
  7. I spent a bunch of time yesterday with Helix connected to the FH1500. I tried to add that 'dry' (after amp and cab model) fx send to some random patches; some of Glenn DeLaune's, some Customtone, etc. I had a *lot* of trouble figuring out what I was doing wrong, because I did experience a fair bit of sound / phase cancellation with certain level balances. At times I had it dialed in well, and it sounded good - but in general it's not an easy 'plug and go' thing to do that extra send to achieve wet/dry/wet.. I will need to spend more time. I noticed they created a split on the wet/dry/wet template; in most cases I just added a send block with full dry pass through - that may have been the culprit, probably need to fuss with stereo vs mono send, I don't know. I need to learn a bit more about how and why the sound does that cancellation to understand what I'm doing wrong! It does sound fantastic with the wet/dry/wet template - so I know it's possible. In in the end I gave up on that extra send idea, and just jammed out with the FH1500 on an amp stand, in regular stereo. sounds really, really good! I had a lot of fun with it, I am liking it more and more with Helix.
  8. Yes! That is the right thing to do; Helix as the soundcard, and if possible, connect the output from Helix directly to your speakers. This will alleviate any concerns over things/hardware not playing well together. What I have found is that the master volume on Helix does nothing to impact the recording signal level; you should have to boost channel levels too much to get decent recording signal. Also, as others mentioned, check all your bit/sample rate, etc, make sure the recording software and Helix are all on the same rate/depth, IE, 24bit/48k, 32bit float/96k, etc. I don't know enough about this to explain why, but my ProTools/Helix combination seems to prefer 32bit float over 'regular' 24 bit. With my HD500x as soundcard, ProTools always had issues getting started at first, it would load, then error saying the HD500x ASIO driver had changed, and force me to quit ProTools and relaunch it. Happened every single time with HD500x as soundcard. Doesn't seem to occur with Helix. I did have to click a button in ProTools 11 to set the inputs and outputs to 'default' which loads up the 8 in / 8 out options (it was only showing up as a stereo in/out prior to clicking that button)
  9. Let me know if it works? my Dad is sending me his old Acer with Windows 10; was wondering if that would be an option!
  10. You just discovered the best kept not so secret DT 'Bogner' awesomeness! Essentially, it's this: The DT amp is two components and they are separate. There is the 'HD' era 'DT' amp modeling - which is all digital, by Line6. Then there is the all analog, Bogner portion - the power amp, with all it's switching capability. When you plug into the FX return, you are sending whatever signal directly to the Bogner power amp, and skipping all the HD/DT Line6 amp and cab modeling. I do exactly the same thing with my Helix, except I took a few extra steps using DtEdit to bypass the DT amp models entirely, and set up switches I-IV on channel B to match the corresponding topologies (I, II, III, IV). This allows me to use Line6Link from Helix to DT, bypassing all the DT preamp/cab models, using the Helix models / fx, etc, but also being able to switch the Bogner power amp portion of the DT: - class A or class A/B - pentode or triode - topology I, II, III or IV What you discovered is that the Bogner part of the DT amp is really amazing and in many ways far superior to the DT Line 6 HD amp modeling - which can be deactivated or bypassed - as you did by using the FX return, or by using DtEdit with a MIDI connection to re-program the DT amp models or bypass them entirely.
  11. Yeah, somewhere back in the threads one of the technicians from Line6 got into the tube replacement conversation and explained that the amps were designed specifically to use EH tubes, and due to the nature of the power switching of the amp, other tubes present issues that can melt the circuit board, fry the amp, etc. http://line6.com/support/topic/4713-replacement-tubes-recommendations/page-2?hl=tubes&do=findComment&comment=110463 http://line6.com/support/topic/13389-dt50-noise-floor-vs-dt25-noise-floor/?hl=tubes&do=findComment&comment=94862 http://line6.com/support/topic/15605-bias-dt-25-amp/?hl=tubes
  12. I meant to test vocals with FH1500 last night, but got sidetracked doing the Helix-FH wet/dry/wet setup. Next time I jam with the guys I will bring the FH1500 and set it up as my monitor, run their vocals into it, see how it holds up. I ordered some cheap Shure mics from Gtr Ctr yesterday; the had the SM48 on sale for $30 each, got a couple of them on the way, should be a the store for pickup on Monday. I don't sing much; so it won't be a great test for me to do it at home, but I can at least sort out how loud you can get without feedback, and how close the mic can get; not sure what to expect.. I won't have time 'till Tuesday afternoon to give that a test run; I'll report back if I get to it any sooner!
  13. That's likely your culprit right there. It's not intended to use a standard XLR; it's designed to use a digital AES-EBU 110ohm digital cable - which looks identical to a standard XLR, however, for what the Line6Link transmits, is pretty essential for glitch free performance. Think about it like this: the cable is two-way - the connection has to remain correct / consistent sending data from the HD500x to the DT25, and also back from the DT to the HD500x (adjust a knob on DT, watch value change on HD500x screen..) That might not be the problem; but it's worth testing! I bought AES cables from Best-Tronics in Tinley Park, IL; great quality. Line6 also has their own branded option; as do other cable makers, Hosa, etc. http://btpa.com/AES-EBU1-XX.html http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/L6LinkLong http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/L6LinkMedium http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AESS30

  15. I played around with this dry amp send yesterday, and finally got some decent results! For a place to start, I used the template that is on Helix - something like "wet/dry/wet frfr" That send needs to be instrument level though; I think there is a setting in Helix, I just did it manually and reduced the send to -12db. Connect 1/4" cable from Helix send 1 to FH1500 guitar in, on a blank patch; XLR from Helix to FH1500 monitor/xlr in. The way that template has it routed, the (mono) send splits off after the amp/cab model, before the reverb and delays. So I turned the monitor in all the way down to start, turned up FH1500 about 1/2 way, then used the app to bring up the guitar in channel volume - the post amp model 'dry' send. Got that to a decent level. Then turned up the monitor in on FH1500 until the 'wet' fx were audible, and played / tweaked for a bit with different balances. It certainly colors the sound to have two overlapped amp model tones, but it doesn't seem to do the phase cancelling thing that just connected to the Helix 1/4" mono/L out did. I think they intentionally panned out the send; it seems to specifically only route a left channel or something; that likely helps to not double / sum the stereo to mono. Definitely worthy of more exploration! In the short term I might set up my patches to use the 3rd expression pedal to control that send; been trying to figure out what to do with two external exp - onboard Helix exp 1 becomes toe switch wah; exp 2 dedicated master volume pedal; I guess making exp 3 the 'dry amp model' send control makes sense.
  16. I think I will try to set up a recording to compare a looped guitar part through these various output options - curious to see if the FH1500 global EQ impacts the FH1500 XLR out. Record both the Helix XLR outs and the FH1500 XLR out. I want to record a side-by-side comparison, using a looped guitar part, to comapre the stereo XLR from Helix vs stereo XLR out from FH1500 with the extra cable / send 'wet/dry/wet' setup. It definitely alters the sound coming out of the FH1500 in a noticeable way, since it engages an additional (center horn) speaker system. But I would imagine it also blends those together into the stereo output; which will be interesting to see how that compares to 'regular stereo'! In that sense, even though the FH1500 is acting primarily as powered monitor - when you add that extra 1/4" send to the center system, you are then creating a new mix that will get summed to 'regular stereo' going out the XLR. You could assign that 1/4" amp model send to a gain boost/cut FS, or to an expression pedal. That would allow you to control how much 'dry' gets mixed in, and you could use that as part of your performance. Pull forward in the mix, or back off. Or as a dry amp model lead boost, just to cut through. Some cool options for that extra send! I don't think the FH1500 speaker modes (wall, free, floor) will impact the XLR out from the FH; I don't know - will check that too.
  17. Also, FH1500 on an amp stand sounds really nice, helps alot to get it off the floor!
  18. I tested that template patch and it works great! I lowered the send level to -12db, there may be an easier way to set that in Helix as instrument level instead of line level. Anyway, balance the fx send guitar in level with the stereo monitor in and it sounds awesome!! No phasing or cancellation this time :)
  19. With the original firmware, the monitor in gets passed to the XLR out. With the new firmware, the monitor in does not get sent to the XLR out. L6Arne mentioned they would like to eventually do a firmware update to allow that choice to be toggled. For now, I am still on the original firmware for that reason.. I believe the guitar in will always get sent to the XLR out regardless of blank patch or otherwise. Same for the fx loop; so you could use that for the wet/stereo helix send if you also wanted to use the monitor in function with the new firmware, IE, monitor mix back from PA or something.
  20. I also had some of the phasing cancellation issues; but that is to be expected! Feed a mono summed signal with a stereo of same thing, weirdness happens. I am going to test this other idea today; dry after amp model helix send to guitar in blank patch in fh1500, and wet stereo post fx to fh1500 monitor in. Is that second send, the 100% wet fx; is that the main l/r helix out? Or some parallel routing? Wasn't precisely sure. I might be asking a bunch of questions on how to make it happen! Perfect timing with the Helix editor, eh? Cheers!
  21. I don't know why it only works on channel B; those I-IV switches are not lit up on channel A. No, by disabling / choosing none for the DT preamps, in this case you are only manually reconfiguring the power amp stages. Think about it as a powered tube speaker at the end of the chain, where you can tweak various aspects of the power amp to impact the feel and speaker response. It's only one way, it doesn't talk back to Helix or control the Helix preamps or anything. In reality, most times with the HD + DT l6link combo, you really didn't want to switch up power and topo settings mid song anyway; there were some pretty noticeable noise and popping sounds. So in that sense, with Helix just find settings on the DT that you like and let it rip!..

  23. I am also not a programmer, but making Helix sound good with my DT25 was very easy, and sounds very good! For what it's worth I run Helix into both L3m and Dt25; quite awesome together. The thing to keep in mind with DT amps is these are two distinct components in one amp; and you need to treat them as such to pair with Helix. You want to use the Bogner analog power amp; you want to disable or bypass the Line6 HD DT amp, cab and mic models. This is quite simple; will take zero programming skills, and results in outstanding tone. I didn't want to do topo changes with MIDI and L6Link; just wanted to manually audition the different topo and power settings on my DT25 with various Helix patches. Anyway, here's what I did, works great! 1.) connected DT25 with MIDI to my PC running DtEdit. Been doing this for a while for various DT usage, definitely worth being familiar. DtEdit for PC: http://rome2.github.io/dtedit/ User DT editor links: http://line6.com/support/topic/124-user-created-dt-editors/ 2.) disable all preamp cab and mic on all eight voicings on the DT25. I also set all eight to same class A or A/B and triode/pentode setting. Set boost to off on all. Disable mic model for XLR output. 3.) set IA and IB to topo I. Set IIA and IIb to topo II. Set IIIA and IIIB to topo III. Set IVA and IVB to topo IV. Disconnect MIDI, connect L6link to Helix. Change to channel B on the DT. You will now be able to toggle between the four topology options, (and the class A or A/B and pentode or triode) on the DT. Helix patches will all now sound amazing. Seriously loud too. You will likely find that certain topo settings will suit your playing, but in the short term this is the easiest 'manual access' way to audition Helix with DT. If you want to add a MIDI cable to the connection, Radatats has some killer templates that will temporarily blank the DT preamp and cab plus also let you toggle the topo with Helix footswitches. Those changes stick when you change patches, I think the DT resets to it's default after powering down- unless you use DTedit to make the changes, then it stays with the amp.
  24. Went with two boards; Mono cases; the smaller board goes in Mono 'club'; the Helix on it's board in a Mono 'tour'. The small board is a Pedaltrain classic Jr; Helix is mounted to a Trailer Trash flat board, 12x24. Used 3m dual lock on the underside of the Helix, left the feet on Helix, has plenty of airflow and sticks like crazy to the board - I can hold it upside down, swing it around, doesn't budge. I think I might actually have difficulty getting it off there if I needed to! Less is more with the dual lock stuff..
  25. Yes - DT25 + Helix sounds amazing!!! It took me some messing around with what I needed to do - in particular, what DarrellM5 mentioned; take a few minutes to use DTEdit and blank all the DT preamp/cab/mic setups for all eight 'voicings'. Then, what I did, just to at least be able to toggle between the four topologies, is set up each pair of A1 & B1 to be the matching I-II-III-IV topo. For some reason with the current Helix-DT connection being on channel A prevents you from toggling between the four topos. However, if you switch to channel B, it allows you to toggle between the topo settings, if you have them pre-assigned to the four voicing settings. It's worth it; take the time, because- Helix sounds *incredible* with DT25 - when the DT is set up properly! The reality is that you will likely be able to find one topo setting, pentode/triode, and class setting that you like the best, and stick to it for most any patch on the Helix.
