  1. There are many ways of doing something on the hd500x, and I guess that would be one of its strengths. It's very flexible. You could control the drive of an amp with the expression pedal, but I don't think you can with a button. You could have two amps (in the same preset) and switch between them at the push of a button. When controlling a preset with pedals and buttons, there is no latency in those actions.
  2. The switching is likely < 100ms. However, any reverbs, delays, etc. will suddenly cut out. The 500x allows for trails within a preset, but not when switching to a different preset.
  3. I've heard the term 'ghost notes' before on these forums. I'm not really sure what it is though. And I recall someone saying they turn down the hum dep parameter on the amp to get rid of it. Could be what you describe. Do you have a noise gate in your patch? If so, maybe it's that slowly kicking in, depending on the decay setting.
  4. For input sources, it kind of depends on the patch. For higher gain stuff, I find it sounds better with both inputs the same. For clean sounds, I'll disable the second input. I think there's a current thread titled 'solo boost' about getting a boost.
  5. I'm with you on not really understanding the probably many ways real stomp boxes can be configured. Never owned any. But we're in the digital realm, so it's always very easy to just try something and see how it sounds. Learn by experimentation. On some patches I make, I use compression to flatten out the dynamics of a signal. Makes it more uniform. But compression can also alter the amp tone. For higher gain patches, I tend to use the Soldano model, which when combined with a tube drive, has plenty of sustain with no extra compressor. Keep in mind, a tube drive will provide some compression, as well as the power amp section of the amp. As for a delay effect, I look at that as something added after you're satisfied with the tone you make. It adds dimension. Reverb would be the same sort of thing. So to be honest, I wouldn't worry about having/wanting an uncompressed delay effect.
  6. You could probably do what you want by making use of both signal paths, but any compressors, drives, boosts, etc. could not be in the pre-position (see attached picture), and make sure the mixer pan controls are both centered. Some of the compressors placed after amps don't sound very good. Plus you're probably limiting yourself in what you can do. There are also delays that aren't supposed to color the dry signal (tube echo dry, tape echo dry, etc.), but if I understand what you're asking, that isn't exactly what you want. You want the actual delayed sound to not be compressed?
  7. One thing I've noticed about the wahs, they each respond differently to the various amp/cabinet/mic combinations, with the cabinets and mics having the most effect. By respond, I don't mean they just take on the characteristics of a given cabinet or mic, but they actually behave differently; the dynamics change and the feel while playing the guitar changes. So the combinations for one to try are staggering. It can easily become a black hole of tweaking nightmares.
  8. Test mode is the calibration screen. So select FLASH with the arrow pad. After that I'm not sure. If you press the view button while FLASH is selected, the screen blanks and displays the word 'flash' in the upper left corner for less than a second, then goes back to the calibration screen with the letter P after the word FLASH. The same thing happens if SDRAM is selected. I think what silverhead is saying is exactly what he stated. 1. Bring up the calibration screen 2. Select FLASH with the arrow pad (down arrow) 3. Reflash the device using Line 6 Monkey.
  9. Then sadly, it sounds like it's bricked. :( You'll probably have to get it serviced by a Line 6 repair center, probably not a fun process. Or if you have an alternate power brick to try (9VDC, 3A)? Does holding the right arrow while powering on do anything? That should bring up the calibration screen.
  10. Maybe a long shot, but you could try unplugging everything (except power) and then again try powering on while holding left arrow. If that doesn't work maybe try another power outlet on a different circuit (maybe even a different house?).
  11. Thanks. Guitar is a JEM 7VWH with the original evolution pickups. The improvisation was all neck pickup. Do you have a HD500X? Curious if you tried the patch and found it disorienting while playing with the reverse delay engaged. I didn't notice at first, but it actually reverses the notes, or if you play an ascending sequence it actually descends, and vice versa, in addition to a reverse delay effect. It's really weird while playing. It's almost like listening to someone else play, or to hear yourself play in a completely different way.
  12. Check it out if interested. Was experimenting with a reverse delay. You can get some really weird effects going on with a reverse delay. Especially when actually playing the guitar rather than listening to the results. Very strange. Entropy (improvised) HD500X preset: Lead 1-7-4-45.zip
  13. Quoting doesn't seem to work with at least internet explorer 11 on windows 7. It does work with the portable version of opera 12.16.
  14. Another option is to use a pitch glide at 100% mix and +.1 pitch instead of a delay. Adjust the mixer pan controls appropriately. This will give a chorus type effect so you may or may not like it.
  15. Absolutely. Go to the 'setlist' tab in HD500X edit and slow double click -- left or right -- the setlist you want to rename. I don't know how to do this without hdedit though.

    Hd 500x

I recently went from an HD500 to HD500X and was pleasantly surprised at the usefulness of that extra 20% dsp. As others have said, the other difference is better footswitches. Something is different about the power supply also. The 500X has a green light, the 500 has (I can't remember, but not green). The 500X turns on almost immediately, whereas the 500 usually has a one or two second pause before turning on. That could suggest different circuitry.
  17. I don't think you can. If you want some amount of control, you'd need at least the fbv express controller which is around $90. Or if you are technically oriented, you could figure out the signals coming from the rj-45 jack and make a custom cable that goes from that to midi (I would guess that the device itself still would use midi and not something proprietary).
  18. So far, the 500x is better just by itself, in fact better than I thought it would be. I haven't begun to think about using the two together. Definitely a project for another day though. I could literally spend days upon days experimenting with such a setup.
  19. I guess I'll answer my own question and if it helps anyone else looking to upgrade, all the better. So I went and bought an hd500x in addition to my existing hd500. The patch I wanted tested worked fine. In fact, there was even a little more dsp left. I've gotta say that this is what the hd500 should have been when it was first released. Dual amp/cab patches are very usable on this unit without losing any of the extras such as delay, reverb, chorus, phaser/flanger, etc. plus even bass ocatver/pitch glide, but the smart harmony with all that other stuff in the chain is too much. Another good thing I'm finding out is that with dual cabs, ignoring/avoiding the disastorous equalizers is much much easier.
  20. Good suggestion. I have thought about it in the recent past, but something kept turning me away, I think mostly the price and product age. Purely conjecture, but Line 6 might have something at summer namm with this line of products? Another I've thought about is the zoom ms-70cdr. Basically, I want to use dual amps/cabs and still have room left for delay, reverb, sometimes chorus/phaser/flanger, etc. You probably get the idea. I was just tinkering with the patch I uploaded to this thread and I got mostly what I was after minus the reverb, so the 500x would likely be enough for what I'm after and without extra appendages. One thing I did was dump the mid-focus eq, and after removing it, I realized this eq sucks. It seems way too sensitive to incoming volume, resulting in obvious clipping. It was placed after the amp though.
  21. Can someone with an hd500x or hd pro x load the attached preset and tell me if the dsp limit is reached? The file extension inside the zip is H5E so when opening it select ALL FILES (above the OPEN button) instead of HD500x patch files or just rename the file extension to 5XE. Also make sure the device is turned on or it won't check the dsp limit. I have an hd500 and was thinking of trading it in for an hd500x, depending partly on the answer to the above question. Another idea is getting a pod hd desktop (plus the smaller controller -- fbv express I think) as a supplement to the hd500. I think currently the hd desktop can be found for $200.00 and the controller for about $90. The only problem with this is I can see it becoming overly complex, or having too many ways to accomplish something. For someone that can't resist tweaking and trying all possible combinations to something, this could be a nightmare! What do you think? Thanks. HD500X-DSP.zip
  22. Wasn't aware of those two you mention. They both look interesting, but being familiar with reaper, looks like I'll stick with that. Not too big on VSTs either. I find that reaper comes with pretty much everything you'd need. The only thing I use is onesmallclue's Poise for drums.
  23. I've only ever used Reaper so that's the one for me. Other solutions seem ridiculously priced to me.
  24. Here's what's in the preset. FX, Amp Amp Parameter, Amp Cab Parameters, Mixer:
