No JTV Set-up Info from Line6
cruisinon2 replied to Guitarkyller's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
This is likely to be the only answer we're gonna get: "Q: Can I fix or modify my Line 6 device myself? Can I get repair assistance from Line 6? A: A: If your Line 6 product needs repair, we strongly suggest you contact the nearest authorized service center or distributor in your region. For safety and liability reasons, Line 6 does not supply customers with repair assistance. Line 6 does not offer repair assistance, circuit diagrams, blueprints or schematics to end users. Line 6 does not support the customization or modification of Line 6 products, outside of official firmware updates or hardware upgrades. Any attempt to modify or self-repair your unit will void your warranty." from the official service FAQs Roughly translated, "We don't trust you not to burn down your house with the soldering iron, and we're afraid you'll sue us and some fuzzy-headed "McLawsuit"-friendly judge will make us give you $50 million." Thank the lawyers... -
Can my luthier repair my JTV69?
cruisinon2 replied to guitar4u's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
What's moronic is assuming that no one but an "authorized" person can fix a JTV. There's no Variax PhD program. When a part fails, it's gonna be swapped out. Entire boards will come and go. Solder it in where the old one was. You think they're gonna replace individual transistors, resistors, and diodes? There ARE people capable...you might even be one of them. There's nothing mystical about it. If you want to go on perpetuating the notion that the "authorized" folks have some magical skills set that mere mortals do not...go ahead, enjoy. I'm not gonna debate it endlessly. If you need to be right, fine you're right. -

Yeah, my pickguard took a while too. They said it would be 10-14 business days before it would ship...why I don't know. Some places take forever. Sweetwater seems to know what you're gonna order before you do, and it's out the door same day most of the time. Ordered a 7 string from them yesterday afternoon. Got the tracking number a few hours later...it'll be here tomorrow. -
Anyone run their HD500X into the effects return of a guitar amp?
cruisinon2 replied to Rocco_Crocco's topic in POD HD
Ahh, memories...I had one of those for years. Kept is as a practice amp even after upgrading to bigger rigs. Thing was bullet-proof until one day, just nothing...lol. Oh well, nothing lasts forever. Ran various pre-amp/ multi fx units through it, and was always surprised at the sound. I think they're still selling them, so they must have done something right. -
You will need to load up a patch, then select electric guitar mode on the L2M, and save. When you recall that patch next time, it should switch mode to electric guitar automatically. Just as an aside, I don't know what's in the rest of your rig, but if you're using a POD HD and/or a JTV, you're kinda defeating the purpose of having a nice FRFR speaker by running it in electric guitar mode. Especially for the the JTV acoustic models and the POD's amp/cab sims , you really want to be in reference PA mode to take advantage of the FRFR capabilities. Otherwise, electric mode is artificially restricting the speaker's frequency repsonse. Just food for thought.

Agreed...but ultimately, I think we're all wasting our breath. No matter how little sense it makes, it's been made quite clear that we just can't be trusted with such sensitive info. On the bright side, you can get by without it. I've not found my JTV to be any more difficult to set up than anything else I've ever owned. And absent any serious electronics/hardware issues, I don't expect that to change much. Don't set your pickups too close to the strings, allow enough neck relief so that fret buzz is kept to a minimum, make sure it's properly intonated so the alt. tunings don't suffer, and don't store it in an environment that is either soaking wet, or bone dry. And while it should be obvious, don't play your frets into oblivion...I've seen guys with fret-wear so bad you could park a car in the divots, and they wonder why their intonation is shot to Hell. All the same things that you would do with dear old grandad's archtop... -
What we really need to find out is how many Eskimos are buying PODS...

Pre-amp out/power amp in is an FX loop. You could run guitar--->POD--->power amp in. This bypasses the combo's pre-amp and tone stack, so your tone will not be altered by running it into another pre-amp. As far as I'm concerned this is the easiest way to get a good sound, but certainly no the only way. Daisy-chaining two pre-amps together is often a mess, and almost always a much noisier set-up. Not impossible to do mind you, but just requires more tweaking. With amps that have FX loops, there's also the 4 cable method (4CM). This allows you to use either the POD models for your tone, or your amp's pre-amp (leaving the POD just for fx). There are numerous threads on here that discuss the 4CM. For me it's more trouble than it's worth, but there are plenty of guys who use it with good results.

Despite the fact that it's technically "wrong", for me the only output mode that produces anything close to a usable sound is "studio/direct". I tried pre-amp only models with no cab sims, along with the "correct" output mode for my set-up...(a tube power amp and 4x12 Marshall cab)..."fizzy" didn't even come close to what I was getting. "Ice-pick through the temple" would be closer...no amount of tweaking helped. Just one rusty chainsaw sound after another. But studio/direct works quite well...required dialing out a fair amount of low-end boominess, depending on which cab model I'm using, and generally turning the "early reflections" parameter to zero, but that was the only thing that worked for me. I suppose it will largely depend on the amp you're running into...you may have better results with one of the other output modes, and no cab sims. Each rig is different...see what works best for you. -

Yes, that's true...but nevertheless, we are all still repeatedly warned about the potential dangers of "unauthorized" personnel doing anything to JTV, and how such an "unqualified" individual cannot possibly be trusted with the factory specs. Who knows what fate we might suffer should the correct pickup height info fall info the wrong hands. -
I believe that's the first time I've seen the words "drummer" and "think" in the same sentence...;) All kidding aside, I really don't underdstand how they get all 4 limbs doing different things at the same time. A good drummer is like a good auto mechanic...once you find one, keep him.

None of it makes any sense. If it's no skin off Gibson's a$$ to give us wiring diagrams, then L6 shouldn't care either. Tinker at your own risk, but it's simply not their problem...if you wreck the guitar, it's on you, and it goes to them for service on your dime, not theirs. If you're afraid to touch it for fear of making a problem worse, it still goes to them for service. Either way, L6 gets the business. I can almost guarantee that they're scaring away potential customers who read stuff like this, aren't the do-it-yourself type, and don't happen to live anywhere near an "authorized service center". If I genuinely believed that a set-up was going to involve sending the guitar cross country, I wouldn't have bought one. They wanna keep a lid on how the modeling is done, fine...nobody will fault them for that, but the height of a pickup? Please...the more the same excuse is repeated, the more it starts to look like they're just interested in perpetuating a "mystique" that doesn't really exist. Yeah, yeah...it's not my grandad's archtop. It's not the Hubble telescope either. -

Really? I found all of the following service info in a matter of minutes, no begging or sweet-talking required. And it's all free for the taking... Here's all the factory specs from Fender, Gibson, and PRS for anyone who's interested: http://www2.fender.com/support/articles/stratocaster-setup-guide/ http://www2.gibson.com/Support/Tech-Tips/Basic-Guitar-Setup.aspx http://www2.gibson.com/Support/Schematics.aspx http://www.prsguitars.com/csc/setup.html The Fender one is a bit lengthy, and is largely a generic how-to guide. You have to scroll down a bit to get to the actual specs, but they're in there. Gibson is particularly forthcoming with their info. Aside from just set-up specs, the second Gibson link has downloadable PDF files with the wiring schematics for several dozen guitar AND amp models. So much for other companies refusing to divulge "sensitive" service info. -

What a great guitar.
cruisinon2 replied to CambuslangSteve's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
It is a very cool axe...the manual however, will only take you so far. I've learned far more here than from the book. Dig into Workbench, that's where all the goodies are...mixing and matching guitar bodies with different pickups, adjusting string volumes, etc. There's lots in there. The more you try out the various models, the more things you'll want to adjust. Just takes a while for it all to sink in...it's fun though. Enjoy! -
Well the non-response came from someone else, but it's more or less what I expected. I'm sure the two of you will very happy together, toasting your superiority in the "better people" lounge. All the best.

Wow... I can buy the official shop manual for just about any motor vehicle in existence...with all the "double-secret" specs right there in black and white for all the world to see. Suzuki can't vouch for my ability to replace a clutch basket, but it certainly didn't stop them from selling me the book...plus, I can read and turn wrench. And even if I couldn't, it's not their problem anyway. Worst case scenario, I screw something up, then they get to sell me more parts and charge me for the labor to undo the damage. Selling me the book is a win-win proposition for them. I fail to see why the set-up specs should remain a state secret. -
So let me see if I've got this straight... When anyone else takes issue with the tone someone uses to express themselves, they're designated "a**holes", and "uneducated idiots"...but when you do the exact same thing, you're the good guy? Is it OK to behave exactly the same way as those you're vilifying, as long as you fly the flag of "good taste" while you do it? Or maybe it's OK, as long as those to whom it's directed are pre-judged to be terrible people...either way I suppose it makes you the better person, right? Congratulations...you win. It's also worth noting that of all the people who've commented here, you're the only one resorting to name-calling...the same guy who repeatedly takes everyone else to task for their alleged lack of "decency" and "class". Exactly how does the name-calling fit into that narrative? Never mind, I don't care. To everyone else...stayed tuned for the reply that doesn't actually address anything I've said. But I'm sure it will contain something about my post count as it relates to a deep-seeded desire to be an "expert", and how my playing must suck as a result...who knew that armchair psychoanalysis is part of a graphic arts curriculum these days? Unless of course he's too busy "Kylling it", in which case there won't be a response at all.

JTV FW 2.21 - What's New In It?
cruisinon2 replied to davidb7170's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Nothing's "broken", per se. They just modeled a different Strat for the newer firmware. Some like it, some don't. The differences in levels coincide with what one would experience if you were A/B-ing the actual guitars...anything with humbuckers is gonna put out a hotter signal than single coils, so it is with the models. This drives some people up a wall, others not so much. Since I tend to have patches on the POD set for use with a particular guitar (or model if its the JTV), this doesn't really bother me. You could also level out the models in Workbench, and then save them to the guitar how you like 'em. There's always a work-around... -
Yep...most of us had similar experiences, I suspect. Some may not admit it, however ;) . But I was definitely frustrated at first, no doubt...and I had bought the POD and JTV together, so it was a decent pile of cash to lay out. I was not a happy camper right off the bat. Thrilled with it now though. It get's better...
-
You really need to spend a significant amount of time with the POD before you're gonna be anything close to happy. My initial impression the day I got mine was "this thing sucks". But after a few deep breaths, assorted profanity, and a few days of working with it I started to understand how it works...but it took several weeks, and a lot of reading around here before I really got the sounds I was looking for. There's a lot in there, and it takes some getting used to, "plug and play" it's not. Presets are largely useless, although I'm told that some of the newer ones that came with the most recent firmware update are somewhat better, but I haven't tried them...so if your POD didn't come with the new firmware (and it most likely didn't) you might want to try updating it and loading in the new presets. You may find some in there that you can work with. Custometone...for me at least...was not a particularly gratifying experience either. With the exception of an acoustic patch I found for use with the JTV, I have used exactly none of the dozens of patches that I initially downloaded. You may have better luck, but I think you'll find starting from scratch with an empty patch, building it from the ground up will yield much better results (and a lot faster), than just trying one patch after another that someone else created. 9 out of 10 times, whatever the Customtone patch is said to emulate is far removed from what you're gonna hear on your end...but as always, your mileage may vary. Hang in there for a while, and it'll all start to sink in.
