  1. >>"B-b-b-but Digital Igloo! Why would you ship a product that's not 100% complete?!" Because there's no such thing as 'finished' software? :D
  2. That's the spirit. You'll never hear me complaining about developers refusing to release code until it's ready for prime time. 'Professionalism' is wot I calls it. Well done L6 testers.
  3. Again, thanks for the additional suggestions. After further reading and thought, I've opted for the BeyerDynamic DT 770 Pro 80Ω on the basis of its popularity with forum members and several detailed and positive reviews (eg. here), plus its closed back design (I want to keep noise leakage to a minimum). Hopefully that's me sorted for headphones for the time being. Now we can go back to speculating about what's in the 2.50 firmware update... ;)
  4. Thanks everyone. Very helpful indeed. Sorry if this is a rather well-worn topic btw :). BeyerDynamic DT 770 Pro 80Ω seems to be getting the most love so far, to no great surprise. I'm still mulling this over, but it's a strong contender. Once again, thanks for your suggestions.
  5. I'm still using ancient Sennheiser HD 565s and I know I have to stop. The Rokits are giving me the yellow eye, every day. I know I have to act. I know that I need studio headphones. I know that this is a first world problem. But even so, it needs sorting :D Suggestions welcome... Let's say to around the £250 / $350 USD mark, although just roughly.
  6. The problem with this is that to really hear what Helix can do, you need to run it through powered FRFR cabs and / or studio monitors. Guitar cabs are anything but flat response, and will colour all your tones. So looking forward, you probably need to think about the cost of new speakers too. And what pbatts said about waiting for NAMM...
  7. Originally written for the HD500 but afaik applies equally to the HX noise gate / hard gate - MeAmBobbo's Tone Guide provides a decent explainer. Hope this helps.
  8. Yes to this. I'm in the same boat - low-wind PAF clones on main guitar and I find the input block noise gate to be pretty transparent (and pretty useful as my main guitar isn't very well shielded and contributes a fair bit of buzz). I can see why others might not have the same user experience as I do if they are playing through hot pickups.
  9. If at the tail of the signal chain, don't forget to use the stereo LASC block if you are using stereo effects.
  10. Sounds like you might need to adjust the open and close dB cutoffs, especially if you are getting 'stutter' as notes decay. But for a quick fix, get rid of the noise gate block and instead use the Input Gate in the Guitar Input block. It works and it doesn't mess up your tone.
  11. It does depend a bit on how hard ddmilne is pushing the power stage on his HR Deluxe. If not much, he might want to use the full amp model on Helix to get *its* power stage distortion into his tone. Or he might still find he's sounding a bit thin and scratchy.
  12. I wonder if your Helix output is a bit too hot. Assuming that you are running the Helix 1/4" LEFT/MONO output into the Power Amp In on the HR Deluxe... what is the Volume on the Helix set to? And what is the Ch Vol on the Helix amp block in your patch set to? If either or both are high, turn them down and see if this helps clear up the nasty harshness.
  13. Can you just describe - in detail, stage by stage - exactly how you are set up. Starting with the main guitar you use, (pickups) and going all the way through to the speaker(s) you are playing through.
  14. That's a great link, MusicLaw, thanks. Complete with FX block DSP allocations *and* expressed as % of total DSP. (I would have responded sooner but was unable to post on this site today for some reason).
  15. Trying again... Helix DSP Values.xlsx
  16. That's odd. I don't have an FB account either, but I got the file first time without any problems and I've just tried again and it downloaded again without any problems. I think I can upload the file as an attachment, so will try that now. Fingers crossed...
  17. >>Did you sound good when you got your first real Marshall Amp when you were a teenager?? Not until I figured out to put a TS in front of it :D
  18. Lots of wisdom here, unsurprisingly, given the source :) It's not constructive to start off blaming the tools.
  19. +1 So much of what some hear as high gain with early EVH is his right hand. Pick attack and pick harmonics.
  20. I can see now why I'm close to maxing Path A with a Plexi Bright (50% DSP) and Echoplex (I understand that this will be a biggie) and comp, distortion and verb. Only just starting to get a feel for HX, so this is very helpful
  21. Thanks! And thanks also for saying something about the method used to obtain the estimates. Which saved us going through the rigmarole of me asking 'anyone know how they did this?'... :) Much appreciated. Great product, great forum.
  22. You're right that you should treat the blocks like real kit, and you are right that the order affects the tone. Which is why I'd recommend a quick look at the video posted on the previous page. That is *exactly* the secret to getting the EVH1 tone right...
  23. More reverb and some of that 218ms echo from the 'Transistor Tape' FX which you also need to to crank to +6dB to push the front of the amp a touch harder. Just like the guy does in the EVH Atomic Punk patch upthread. That's what EVH did, which is why it sounds correct :)
  24. Apologies if this is a search-fail on my part, but is there a list of amp, cab, fx etc. models on HX indicating how much DSP each one uses? I wouldn't necessarily let it shape my patches, but it would be a useful reference to have handy... Many thanks.
  25. Have a look around online for some Jimi Hendrix Helix tones - with a bit of luck you'll find some useful (and free) tips on YouTube. I'm really sorry I can't be more helpful but as I said, I don't use the Arbiter (I tend to run a Tube Screamer in front of the Plexi).
