You all are light years x2 ahead of me with this gear, but a rule I use for everything electronic device related is only do so many repetitive operations before you stop/save/reboot etc. We get in the groove, and it is efficient, but historically I have found doing the same operation over and over (20+) on a device will often cause it to brain fart. This comes from experience with software on PCs but more so from programming a Yamaha RX-7 for 30 years.

Well, name a song or five and we could possibly steer you to some.
-
Noob here, so this is what I suggest. Pick a song you like/want to play that has FX and see if there is a preset out there for it, and then fiddle with the included FX. Don't bite the whole elephant at once. Go from known (song/sound you like) to unknown (free range experimentation).

Hell, this is a great tutorial!

Thanks. Between this post and the other on USB I ended up switching the mic cable to the 'AES out' on the Helix and 'AES in' on the Powercab. This freed up both XLR outs on the Helix so I can take left and right into my audio interface!
-
1) So I want to use the 'AES/EBU L6 Link Out' on the Helix to the Powercab, and the left/right 'XLR Out' to the UR44? 2) Got the USB into PC audio working. Echoed like an announcer at a Roller Derby event. Thanks a bunch! Best forum ever!

-USB connection works, as I can manipulate the Helix via HX Edit -But I could not get the Helix sound to come out my monitors (until I ran a cable from my Powercab into my UR44) I was selecting it as an input. I could see it. But I could never get it to play. In the end, it felt like there is one setting on the Helix I need to change. I did everything I could (I think) on the PC end. Edit: by monitors I mean, the Steinberg UR44 and JBL sound system I use with this PC. My normal Helix 'monitor' is a Powercab 112 Plus.
-
I just like having all 3 pieces of software open at the moment. edit: So for the Powercab I am using a 'microphone cable' and I am going in the red circled input. Is there a different cable I should be using and going in the green circled input? The Line 6 cable you mentioned? Hmm, a rep told me this was all I needed, but I was always thinking 'then why is that input on the Powercab'? Would the L6 cable allow the Powercab software to function, passing through the Helix, like the HD Workbench still works through the Helix for the Variax? While I'm learning I like working them via software rather than through the Helix.

So what's the best way for me to keep my Powercab 112 Plus connected to my PC when it's 25' away?
-
So I was getting some longer, basic USB cables to allow my Powercab and Helix to stay connected to the PC and I was doing fine at 15', but when I went to 25' there is no connection. So I am assuming it is a length issue. Do 'repeaters' like this work? https://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-Hi-Speed-Repeater-U042-025/dp/B00BFRKYSU/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Printer+Cable+25+ft+USB+25+Foot+USB+2.0+Type+A+Male+to+Type+B+Male+repeater&qid=1586640159&s=office-products&sr=8-1

Can a Helix preset force a tuning change on a JTV-69?
Lone_Poor_Boy replied to Lone_Poor_Boy's topic in Helix
Thanks for the push. I'm experimenting now, thanks to your tips and I also see a lot of presets that came with the Helix have Variax settings built in. Went to 'Texas Flood'(one of the rare presets actually named without confusion) and it switched my JTV-69 to Spank-4 and dropped the tuning. Of course I was already in Eb. -
Can a Helix preset force a tuning change on a JTV-69?
Lone_Poor_Boy replied to Lone_Poor_Boy's topic in Helix
1) That's good enough for me. I will plunge in. I'd also rethought it and realized I'd rather keep the control changes in one place; the Helix. 2) Thank you so much. I will start applying this this afternoon. 3) HOLY CRAP! I never even thought of that. I'm good at muting after doing it so long but why not use this option. I do prefer HX Edit but I will work though your instructions on both. -
Can a Helix preset force a tuning change on a JTV-69?
Lone_Poor_Boy replied to Lone_Poor_Boy's topic in Helix
I did start digging in yesterday evening; 2 steps forward, 1.8 steps back. :) For you vets that have been doing this, since I'm going to use very few of the default tunings on the JTV-69, do you think it would work as well to build the tunings on the JTV-69 and switch them with the tuning knob, or even set them up to switch with the 5-way switch, avoiding building them into the Helix presets at all? I do think I WANT to build them on the Helix I'm just still daunted at getting under the hood, I guess. -
Cowgirl, etc. etc. sound? This guy does a decent job with it on 'Cortez the Killer'.
-
For example, can a footswitch button change the Variax from 'Standard' tuning say, 'Blues G'? Oh, how I'd love to do Gimme Shelter, for example in open tuning and switch to Standard for the lead break, and then back. ------------------------------------------- Also, what are your thoughts on the Variax JTV-69 Open Tunings? I know I can make my own but I was wondering why they do not have an Open E or Open A out of the box? Are those less common than Open D and Open G (the two they include)? Also, what's up with the one they call 'Open A'? E A C# E A E That's not like any 'A' I know.

JTV-89F + Helix + L2t = sounds like crap, please help
Lone_Poor_Boy replied to wjernigan's topic in Helix
As a Helix noob I wanted to relate my experience with a JTV-69, Helix floor and Powercab 112 Plus. Perfect. I have only run the Powercab in flat mode and the sound has been perfect. I have been damn impressed. The Boogie Mark IV (Cali) sounds perfect and I've just been flipping through presets trying them and having a blast. So I am guessing, as you are leaning toward, it is the L2T. I haven't modified anything. I just updated the devices and started jamming. -
Is variax dead?
Lone_Poor_Boy replied to will_19's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Well that's not good at all. -
Well darn. I don't do Facebook. I will check out 'The Gear Page' though. Thanks both.
-
These just seem somewhat dead, especially the Variax JTV-69 one. Reddit is pretty dead as well.

I'll have to try it, and play with different amps. I'm new to Helix but used a two-tube amp setup before for the reason Wayne noted.

Helix Native Snapshot Was solved!!!! Thanks!!!!
Lone_Poor_Boy replied to cachete1966's topic in Helix
1) Nice tag-team explanation by themetallikid and rd2rk 2) My noob interpretation is you should add the parameter to the snapshot, then tweak it. Basically, build the tools you need in the snapshot and tweak them within the snapshot. Please correct me if I am off-base. -
Hi all, So last night I started getting into switching tuning on my JTV-69 but assumed I would see the string notes switch in Workbench like I do when changing guitar types, pickups etc. But they always stayed gray and as E-A-D-G-B-E. Any idea why I did not see these change? I tried it connected through my Helix using the Variax cable, and using the Variax CAT5 to USB PC connection. Both reacted exactly the same.

I watched a Ben Vesco video on setting up 2 amps across both DSP chips and he wrote "read the manual" in reply to someones comment on YouTube. I just went through the manual a bit and I see what he meant. The two main things he demos are right there, early, in fairly short paragraphs. That said, there is a huge leap from reading something 'on paper' and actually being able to implement it in this big black box with many buttons. But what I just read gave me clarity I did not have, in a lot of areas around operation of the Helix. I am once again reminded to go against my instincts, and read the damn manual!! LOL!

Well stated. I do understand people wanting to post their stuff, since it's so easy to do. It really comes down to the end user doing what I did, and researching. It is $1,600 after all. But damn, 70% of what I stumbled on did not impress me. It really came down to 2 or so specific persons stellar videos. About 4 more a tier below. And then noise below that. But trust me, if I get a recording of the Helix that sounds like it sounds in my room right now, to me, I'm posting it! But I know from amateur recording experience over the years, that takes experience and talent to replicate.
