Depending on the clean/dirty sound you're looking for you could try using just one amp that has the flexiblity to do both and switch between the two with snapshots Or maybe run a overdriven preamp only block into a clean amp block (or Amp & cab block combined), again switching the different sounds via snapshots
  2. @adagosto I bought two H9's when I had a Marshall half stack before I sold it to get an Atomic Amplifire then a HX Stomp modeller. The sounds you can get from the H9 are certainly impressive but to me they can sit on the side of studio/outboard effects than guitar pedal sounds very quickly if you over tweak the settings. Device-wise you've got to remember that the H9 uses the whole processing power for the selected algorithm whereas the HX Stomp XL has to accommodate up to 8 blocks of algorithms with one processor. This means the H9 sound can be far more complex/rich. The one algorithm-at-a-time limitation means that if you do end up liking the H9 sounds more than the XL you'll have to splash out on buying more than one if you want to use an Eventide flanger and Blackhole reverb in one of your presets - which is why you'll see people have two on their boards plus the Strymon Timeline/Big Sky/Mobius If you like the sounds the Eventide products are definitely excellent (small footprint) additions to a HX Stomp/XL pedalboard as long as you're happy to work around the limitations of both units

  4. Looking at the presets in the viewer you're going to be missing the dual amp/cab blend as one is running "dirty" with the drive block and the other is "clean". It's shame you couldn't get something you liked the sound of out of it

While a very manual approach, the easiest way I've found to take parts of complex presets I like and make a Stomp version is to load the file into this site then flick between the web browser and HX Edit and make the preset https://sensationnel-gerard-26922.herokuapp.com/# You'll get quicker at it the more you do it (or if you're job is to flick between multiple spreadsheets or coding windows it'l be a doddle)
  6. Afternoon all I want to use an expression pedal connected to my Morningstar MC8 to control overall patch/preset volume of my HX Stomp via MIDI. I know I could assign the expression pedal to a volume block but I'd like to know what parameter in the amp block you guys (and gals) would assign it to if you had used up all the Stomp blocks ; channel volume or master volume? Obviously the pros of the volume block are I could put it anywhere in the chain but assigning it to an amp parameter frees up that block for something else Thanks Ben
  7. I've never looked into the Royal Blood or their gear but I get what you're trying to do. I think it really depends on which amp/cab you want to use for your core guitar sound. There's a DSP usage spreadsheet (or maybe it's a website, I can't remember?) floating around this forum that someone maintains that you could use to estimate how much you'd use with the blocks you want - I watched one of John Cordy's videos recently all about the pitch effects in the HX Stomp and he got some quite meaty signal paths going The HX Stomp XL is just a rehoused HX Stomp with extra switches so you'll have the same limitations in processing power EDIT: Found the website

I can't comment on the A/D conversion but can't imagine the loops are any different to the one in the Stomp - Do you think your current setup is "noisy" or has tone suck when using the Stomp's loop? As they say, it's really difficult to make a bad electrical product nowadays with the parts and manufacturing processes available. I don't think you'd really notice any issues

  10. Is it a low end cut or a general volume drop? I had a BOSS PH-2 Super Phaser pedal years ago that would mess with my signal when engaged. I've never used an actual MXR phaser but maybe it's a thing all phasers do?
  11. While now discounted, I've been using a Laney IRT-X FRFR powered speaker at home with my HX Stomp (and previously an Atomic Amplifire) and had no problems getting a nice sound at any volume. It cost me £330 GBP back in 2017 so that's less than a third of your $1700 budget. This is assuming you'll be getting all of your tones from the modeller and only using the amp to attenutate the room volume, of course. The good thing about an FRFR speaker is that you'll be able to put your delays/reverbs after your cab block for that studio processed sound or build an "amp in the room" patch. They have updated their range since I bought mine with a 1x12 and 2x12 configuration that are £360 and £450 at the minute here in the UK
  12. I posted something similar a while back and got shot down by the Line 6 "elite" . My though process though; having two smaller Line 6 units gives you the possiblity to have complex patches that need two processors or keep things simple but also the option to have a stripped down setup if needed for certain situations.... my main reason for getting a HX Stomp in the first place, besides cost, was I'm a left footed player in terms of using a wah/expression so that was is a big sticking point of the bigger unit. Remember that people like Dweezil Zappa use two Fractal Axe-Fx units to get their sounds, and others have several Strymon/Eventide pedals doing specific roles on their pedalboards so it's not anything that hasn't been done before. If it gets the result you need and it doesn't break the bank, go for it My original post: Here's the video I referred to:
  13. There's a performance notes section in the Siamese Dream tab book. In the general equipment section it says that they used an Electro-Harmonix Micro Synth pedal in places "where it sounds like a totally different range of fuzz comes in" but specifically for Cherub Rock it says the solo was treated with natural flanging, "I wanted the solo to have a certain kind of movement, so i used two tape machines to do the flanging" EDIT: also he would use a MXR Distortion Plus pedal into his Big Muff for leads/solos https://youtu.be/YZemTcTyJKs

John Cordy posted a video a couple of weeks ago about while not totally the same as a full Helix floor the HX Stomp/Effects combo could give you nearly all of the flexiblity of the bigger unit - and give you the ability to use the Stomp processor for dual amps with the Effects procesor handling the IRs and post-effects. A cheaper option for those of us that already have one of the units and want to "upgrade" without forking out for the bigger unit. I'm thinking of getting another Line 6 unit; do any of you run 2x HX Stomps and depending on the complexity of your preset have the amps & cabs split across the two units or run better dual amp setups? I feel the Stomp/Effects combo would limit the possiblities as the amps & cab models would have to be run on the Stomp. Pros for 2x HX Stomps: almost bigger unit routing capability with all models in the software available to both units Pros for HX Stomp/Effects combo: a couple of extra blocks, more switches (handy for looper if you use it) What's your thoughts on a dual HX unit setup?

    I've never done it before but you need to split your signal path in the HX Stomp, sending one to the effects loop send and onto the Iridium input (for your dry sound), the other to the HX outputs (for your stereo wet sounds) The split would need to be after any HX pedals/effects you want to go to both the HX amp and the Iridium, the HX amp/cab/IR directly after the path split and your wet effect(s) after the HX amp/cab/IR I'm not sure of the actual signal path split settings or any global settings that would need to be changed but that is the logic - you won't be able to use the HX Stomp's effects loop as an actual loop, just a third output (don't know if this can be stereo or just mono) for your signal chain

I only have a HX Stomp but could you not do the following (I maybe completely wrong so make sure the output levels are way way down, or even off, before switiching the units on): Connect the Axe FX stereo send to the stereo input of the HX Effects Connect the stereo output of the HX Effects to the Axe FX stereo return Connect the input & send of the HX Stomp to one of the HX Effects loops Connect the return & output of the HX Stomp to the other HX Effects loop If the loops in the HX Effects are stereo do the connections in point 3-4 as stereo. That way you can put HX Effects effects before and after your HX Stomp while having them on a sepepate line in the Axe FX matrix Just a thought.

Depending on what else pedalwise you are powering You could use a 5 amp GigRig Generator to power both HX units and still have 2.5 - 3 amps of juice spare (The HX units only use about 1A max to be powered; they do the barrel convertors too (it's the green tipped one) I'm sure Voodoo Lab/Strymon/Truetone have bricks that can power both with the right cable configuration it's just I have the GigRig one

If cables are plugged into the left & right output of any effects processor the unit will split the sound left & right so you'll only get half of the desired effect when you run your rig in mono. To get around this you could double up on your presets and have one as stereo L/R and a copy panned hard left (or right?) then you could use either set of presets depending on your connection on the panel. I know he's a sore point on guitar forums but Mason Marangella of Vertex Effects talks about the whole "summing to mono" topic on the their YouTube channel
  19. Just because Derek Trucks doesn’t use pedals on stage (or in the studio?) doesn’t mean that you can’t to get the sound you want. Adding a compressor will get your notes to sustain better - the LA compressor would be a good choice in the front end - or even a boost/EQ somewhere in the chain. A lot of slide players use two compressors in series and the Origin Effects SlideRig pedal built that way. Remember that all live recordings will have Front of House applying compression/limiting/EQ to every sound source individually so you won’t get “the sound” from just an amp & cab
  20. Hi all I'm looking to expand my HX Stomp functionality with an expression pedal (or two). I'm not looking for brand recommendations but the following; Both the Line 6 & Mission Engineering pedals have 10k ohm linear pots in them but I've read on various sites (in researching for HX and Eventide H9 use) that value isn't a given and others say it is. So my question is has anyone had experience using an expression pedal with a 20k ohm pot in it with their Line 6 & other units and does it make any real difference between the two values? Thanks, Ben

  23. I bought an HX Stomp at the end of October. I've just loaded the backup I took when I first got it (before playing around with any of the settings) and there's not a preset called "Seismic Matters". Unless its name has been changed? If anyone else knows the new nameI can get you a copy of the preset
