Collection of User Programming Tips to improve presets and tones...
Lachdanan0121 replied to WickedFinger's topic in Helix
I wanted to comment. I tried this last night, or something similar. I put the studio mic pre after my pre-amp. (which I want to say is a matchless, but I am not at my Helix right now) However I have it set before the cabinet, which I want to say is the Mandarin cab 4 speaker. The patch tone is similar to that of Shine on You Crazy Diamond, but not intended to be a copy of it. Although my patch has much more reverb/delay in it, and a whammy. So not very overdriven, but not super clean either, using my single coil equipped Tagliare. What I noticed is it did warm it up a little, rounded off the extreme ends of the frequency spectrum more, and seemed to mesh very nicely with my chosen Hi/Low cuts elsewhere in the chain. Once I matched the volume with it on/off. It also seemed to glue the guitar/FX, and the rest of the mix of the song together a little bit more as well. I decided to keep it for what will be recorded on my album for that song. So thanks for that, I will be experimenting with this a lot more. ;) I want you to take a simple patch that you like. Now at the beginning put the Whammy block on there with default settings. Where it isn't pitching anything and have the mix at 50%... Now play your guitar through it. Now I want you to turn off/bypass that whammy block in your signal chain, and play your guitar through the chain now. That instant notice in improvement in the tone is because there is phasing when the whammy block is active. "Phasing" in this sense... is when two identical signals are not playing at the exact same time, even if just a few milliseconds difference. A wav is an oscillation of positive, and negative values. When shifted slightly in the time domain, the positives and negatives lose alignment, and thus they reduce the effect of either.- 60 replies

Still falls under "Oh, they like to think so." Personally I find neither "smarter." Men are just more obvious in their "seemingly stupid" because for many generations they could afford to be more belligerent. Women only recently have the luxury of not having to hide it. Both have average, or less (the majority), and diamonds. (the few) Generally speaking of course. ;)

The female shredders are a growing minority. In the past 3-5 years I have seen videos of more than I thought there would be, and I still see some I have never even heard of. For the longest time, when I heard a female say they play guitar... what they mean is they stream a few chords and sing a la la la. My hope is that is starting to change. I see there are women who are not at all satisfied with that definition of "play guitar." There is even a little girl (I can't remember her name right now) but she is like 7, or 8 years old and can play John Petrucci solos, FREAKING John Petrucci! EDIT: She was 14. It was other songs when she was younger, but still extremely impressive. Wait, is there some sort of rule for posting videos here?

Firmware changes that would offer MAXIMUM benefit ? My tuppenneth
Lachdanan0121 replied to d0stenning's topic in Helix
Interesting. I can get behind these. I've been wanting to see new FX, AMPS that aren't just models of existing ones. I wanted to see the digital aspect explored. More Line 6 originals using the flexibility of the digital world. I can definitely see how #4 will be liked by a lot of people. That said, I still think stability is my number one, I think some nice new drivers would be good. -

Other than HX reverbs, and few more vocal effects. I completely agree the rest is icing on the cake. Priority should lie in stability, and function. Of course id like more amps/FX, but I understand, priorities. -

To be fair, I wasnt talking the tracking of whammy.I was speaking of the phasing when you arent running the mix at 0%, or 100%. Even when no pitch changes are taking place.- 60 replies

Collection of User Programming Tips to improve presets and tones...
Lachdanan0121 replied to WickedFinger's topic in Helix
Ok I have one. Some of the effects, such as Whammy pitch shift introduce a decent amount of phasing that will "hollow/thin" your sound. Even if the "pedal position" has it set at "0" semitones. This is apparent with the Mix set at anything other than 0% or 100%. I am using the Whammy at 50%, so its really present there. So, what I have done is set automations within my DAW, and send the midi out to the Helix to adjust the parameter of the "Mix" of the Whammy Pitch model itself in the chain. 0% mix basically is identical to a bypass on the Whammy block. This way my signal is free from the phasing of using the model until I actually use the pedal itself, and only then. Set to the mix I choose the automation automatically moves it where it needs to go. I figured you guys can mimic this behavior by setting up snapshots for the mix 0% on this model, and other models that may do it as well. Or you could setup a second expression pedal to control the mix of the whammy block. This should help you retain your power/fullness while still getting to use your FX how you like. (I am not sure how this can be done programming wise by Line 6, but here is an idea, and if others agree in this post, I may put it up on idea scale.) IF you can set you expression pedal for Whammy pedal position like typical use... The also have a secondary function routed to that same expression pedal. That secondary function would be the Mix of the Whammy. But the mix of the whammy needs a different measuring than the Whammy pedal position parameter. So the mix would be like 100% heel down would be 0% mix parameter for the Whammy Pedal model. But say 98, or 99% heel down would set the mix parameter to the secondary range in you have setup. So Any time you use pitch up at all, it initializes the whammy pedal mix. However, you could reverse this process for the pitch down intentions. As far as wanting to pitch up and down both, that would require the Helix to be able to do what I have above, then on top of that add in a secondary routing to the same exp pedal, and same mix parameter to allow the mix to be engaged moving the pedal up, or down. Alternatively, you could have the Whammy have an additional parameter to automatically engage the mix from 0%, once the expression pedal is moved period, and the "release" could be set manually. As far as I know, the Helix cannot do this yet. IF it could it would be amazing. I was kinda digressing their on a thought, but figured I would share it anyway. I am sure there are other models in the unit that may exhibit similar behavior. Also before anyone says anything this is even when the Whammy is the first block in the path, and it happens when playing guitar through it, or recordings of guitar through usb for ReAmping. For ReAmpers: Also if you are ReAmping the guitar its also best to make sure that the signal you are sending the Helix is mono as well. Depending on how much stereo signal is in the original recording (summing to mono may remove unintended frequencies) so you may have better results converting the left OR the right channel to mono. Some DAWs default in all recordings to be stereo. I will post again if I can think of, or discover more.- 60 replies

No doubt, I never intended any different. Matter of fact, I may even give a few a try here later on. I personally am happy with the decision because it increases the potential user base beyond just what I want it for, and a larger user base usually correlates to longer and more focused support of the Helix platform.

I have some free Ownhammer, some paid for Sigma3, and maybe a redwires freebie as well.... I haven't even loaded into my Helix which I have had for a few months now. The stock cabs are so good to me, that I don't see the need in using IRs.... At least not yet. I guess I could try them out at some point, but for now I don't see a NEED to. To be fair all of my stuff is in the context of a full mix, or simultaneously with a full song.

Beating a dead horse? Tuner accuracy....come on!
Lachdanan0121 replied to watch4king's topic in Helix
Is there any of the horse left!?!?! lol I kid, I kid. -
Helix is a good interface. With more mature drivers, which I am sure are coming at some point, will make it a great interface. It should handle what you want faily easily. You could even wet monitor, and record dry. Then ReAmp the dry recordings. That can be done with both the voice/mic, and the guitar. I myself, use FL Studio as my daw. Its fantastic, but needs improvements in loop recording and midi for external hardware, and such. Which just so happen to be the focus of their next update to it. Reaper is fine btw.

Yamaha acquisition, market dominance & price hikes
Lachdanan0121 replied to Meiannatee's topic in Helix
(Shakes head) I give up my friend. I dont want to waste anymore time with this. So, I will just say this. I know I could be more accepting, and to be fair I should be, and there your point is valid. However, in the big picture that isnt really met in kind. That is where I am just suppose to accept it, while they do not. Typical. Sorry for derailing the thread. Peace! -
Agreed, I would like to see some Line 6 Original, or Unique models. A handful including some high gain amps, boutique amps, and some FX.
-
I am actually more in the boat with you on the High and Low cuts. Sometimes I put the high cut a little higher at 16K-17K. Though I have only used a few models and cabinets. No IRs yet. As a lot of it sounds so good already. I guess one reason why I have the high cut higher than most recommend on here is to come through in a full mix, and stand out. A lot of the guys on here play live in full bands and when your rig is cranked the high frequencies can be very harsh... Which I figure could be another reason as well.

Sweetwater Helix Dream Package Deluxe - Includes Guitar and Amps

Id rather an automated (self driving) Audi. B) -
I don't think there will ever be as many amps/fx in the helix as there are with Fractals stuff. Maybe with Double Helix (Helix 2) that may change. But the thing is, is yes the Helix does need more amps/fx. Does it need a lot more? No, because at some point there will be a lot of redundancy, and overlap. The helix still has some bases it needs to cover still before it reaches redundancy. I honestly expect only a dozen more amp models at most. And maybe twice that for FX from now till the Helix is no longer supported. If there is anymore than that then I would be amazed, and surprised. I find this to be a reasonable expectation.

Sweetwater Helix Dream Package Deluxe - Includes Guitar and Amps
Lachdanan0121 replied to laxtlo's topic in Helix
Well I would like everything about it for a live rig, but the price is atrocious (In fairness, I don't play live. I am studio only, thus FRFR makes more sense) The only thing I don't like about it is the guitar. I have five of my own that cost less all together than the price of that one guitar. And I can do a whole hell of a lot more with those 5 than you can get out of that single fixed bridge short scale (humbucker only) expensive guitar. The routing of what goes where with the dist/amp in middle, and the effects stereo wide is a great concept for a wide wall of sound. I wonder if this can be done relatively easily with the Helix only going in a pc. or ReAmping that way. Having amp/dist middle, and all wet fx going left and right. I might have to amp them first from the helix without wet fx. Then use separate FX on them either in the DAW, or ReAmp twice. Unless you have that system, or one slightly smaller built into the Corvette. Muahahaha  -
Use Expression Pedal to Control 4cm Amp Gain
Lachdanan0121 replied to pearlfukinjam's topic in Helix
No $J%&! We are meeting him Sept 29th at a show in Dallas! He is one of my biggest inspirations musically. I don't know how he did that effect. I just figured I could replicate it, or get real close by using that method above. But yea for sure post it here, cause honestly I might be too star struck to remember that particular question. -
Oh wow, this makes me feel a bit better. Even though I am relatively new to smart phones for personal use. I too was having trouble with these forums and my phone as far as navigation. I couldn't tell I had any PMs. I don't get what you mean about columns on the right though. My phone is dead right now, need to charge it, so I can't pull it up to look atm. But I could scroll up and down decently enough, and didn't need to zoom in any.

Use Expression Pedal to Control 4cm Amp Gain
Lachdanan0121 replied to pearlfukinjam's topic in Helix
You know this thread got me thinking. I have some issues (technical, as I know how to do it) trying to automate from within my DAW FL Studio, and things onboard the Helix itself. Although with a little bit more mature drivers from Line 6 (which I am sure are coming at some point) and the new FL studio 12.3 midi, and loop recording stability improvements/upgrades this may be fixed for me in the near future. However in the mean time... Which is what this thread gave me an idea for. There is a song on a Devin Townsend Ziltoid album called the Planet Smasher. In this song it sounds like to me he has the gain of his amp automated to slightly go up and go down. I would like to replicate a similar effect for some of my own music. Since I can't automate reliably right now over usb. I could perhaps program the expression pedal to control the amp gain setting with my personal set min/max parameters, and just control it manually in real time, even while ReAmping. Sorry this doesn't help much, but I did want to say thanks for the idea Pearlfunkinjam. -

Well said. And I dont disagree with much, but with your reply, I still see you might not be understanding it fully. About faith and religion. If you disregard reason. If you disregard a fact ( which is universally correct ) or evidence, to stay more "true" to make believe. Then you are being willfully ignorant, or stupid, as the lines blur at that point. And for thousands of years they have been forcing it down everyone's throat. This is not the exception with religion, its all but a rule. We are expected to respect their beliefs no matter how ridiculous, yet they can disregard any facts that contradict their faith. And they are praised when they do it. Its down right hypocrisy, and nothing short of keeping the bar low to coddle ignorance. Which if continued its easy to see how we can flow right into oblivion. We do not intend to achieve any of this thru force. War will never have an end that way. But it does require people to start growing up especially with people in fields of the utmost importance. ( speaking as a species) This is not narrow-minded. This is observing the reality of now, and our history. So I am implying, or saying blatantly rather... That if you put your faith before established facts, then it is you who is being narrow minded. Faith before critical thought is the basis for 90% of the woes around the world. Not just faith in a religion or god, But faith defined as the purposeful suspension of critical thought, which it is. Much like Stalin, whose State-ism was the same as religion and required utmost "faith" in the path he has chosen, and for him to be seen as a god king in his own right. Or Hitler, who had his BD celebrated by the Vatican, and the majority of his officers and soldiers were catholic. The church even financed his army. He required utmost faith in his directions from his officers and his nazi army. To bring them in the table these facts must be observed. Matter of fact it is happening now in N Korea. The people must have faith in their leader, and all but see him as a god, or prophet, etc. Without the faith of the followers... Hitler, or Stalin would have never had the power they did. With money you can get into higher learning institutions, which prolly shows some of the problem. And being distracted from their mountains of student debt. In addition to the failing public schools systems you mention. As far as stupid, or ignorant in the video. You are correct. I was generalizing them as stupid, but ignorant is more accurate. I always welcome higher precision, or accuracy if I am wrong. Although maybe not "at first" in an argument, or discussion. lol I mean I am still human. :P I mean no offense to anyone here if it is taken that way. But yes, pm me next time. Start with that avatar. EDIT: Nevermind I see you did PM me, and even started with the avatar lol. I didn't see the PM notification on the phone when I was typing and posting this post here on this thread. Sorry I am still a bit new to smart phones. But I have already typed so much in it, with decent information that I don't want to delete the post lol. Oh well, any not interested in this post can just skip over it. :P I promise I won't post anything else here about it. Prolly won't post in the thread at all, cause I really don't have anything to add to the original subject. -

Lachdanan0121 replied to Meiannatee's topic in Helix
Let me clarify. The "stupid" is shown for example in the video above posted by DunedinDragon. That is just one tiny example of it. The "dedicated" to being ignorant, or not understanding is found largely with people that put their faith before evidence. Ignoring facts to cling to outdated notions, you know actual closed minded people. And your drawing similarities to Hitler, and Stalin do not apply for the following reason. Disagreement is welcomed if something is brought to the table that is constructive, or alternative. As long as critical thought, evidence, logic, reason etc are brought to the table, and not just things like faith, and beliefs which are proven to be universally unreliable. The concept is to take on emergent data, process it, reshape ideas accordingly.. to make the best system for all. The NLRBE systems are just the closest example that I have come across thus far. I welcome you look it up. If there are things that would be better logically I welcome them be brought to the table. I felt I needed to address your comment, but I really feel as if I have contributed to derailing this thread enough. Feel free to PM me about if your truly interested. But, I have to say, that is an odd avatar you have. There is a little chuckle inside each time I see it. -
What expression pedals do you guys use with the Helix?
Lachdanan0121 replied to Rocco_Crocco's topic in Helix
I use the mission exp pedal designed specifically for the Helix. Works well enough, although I think I may need to adjust the physical sweeping motion, maybe not. I also have a moog exp pedal, but honestly I didn't like it cause it was a little too tall to use under my studio desk without having my knee be up against my Keyboard trey in my studio. It also doesn't feel quite as smooth as the Mission EXP pedal designed for the Helix does.
