Is the L3 loud enough for an FRFR rig?
zaphodboy replied to zaphodboy's topic in StageScape Mixer / StageSource Speakers
I got the L3m in the end, used it for the first time on Sunday at an outside gig and WOW....it sounded awesome! More headroom than you can shake a stick at. When we make it really big and play the 02 arena I might get the volume past half way!! I have been umming and erring about FRFR since the Stagesource speakers came out, now I'm kicking myself for not doing it earlier.- 9 replies

I took delivery of a shiny new L3m on Saturday. This is to be used with my HD500 and JTV 59 to create an FRFR rig. I spent Saturday night tweaking patches and at low volume it sounded great. We had a gig on Sunday, powered up the L3, turned up and WOW...it sounded awesome!! I was well pleased with my purchase as was he rest of the band. Some of the patches still needed a bit of tweaking so I spent yesterday in my studio doing just that at a lower volume, which is when it happened. I was playing a riff and tweaking when suddenly I lost all the top end tone, losing all the 'sparkle'. I turned everything off and on again, still no top end, then suddenly it came back. This happened 4 or 5 times. The L3m is set to electric guitar mode, HD500 to studio, and I'm using a 1/4 inch lead from the POD to the speaker. Any ideas guys?? EDIT...I have found a post relating to this problem and it seems it is an internal connection problem within the speaker. I am returning it to the vendor for a replacement.

Hi I have just ordered an L3 speaker to replace my existing guitar amp. It will be used in conjunction with my HD500 and JTV 59 giving me an FRFR rig. I have a question about the virtual tiltback function. What is the best orientation of the L3 when in 'electric guitar' mode being used as a backline? What are the pros and cons of positioning the speaker on its side rather than upright?

I'm currently using a 1 x 12 50w Marshall tube amp with an HD500 and JTV 59. I'm convinced about the whole FRFR rig concept, especially as I play in a band covering everything from Metallica to mellow acoustic and need the versatility. The only thing I'm worried about is whether the L3 packs enough of a punch compared to my 50w Marshall. I'd really appreciate comments from you guys, especially those who have gone FRFR. Is the L3 loud enough??

So I Finally Jumped Ship, Dumped My Hd500 And The Last Of My Line 6 Gear.

Knobulating!! What a fantastic verb....to knobulate. Whoever is responsible for dictionaries get that one in immediately!! -
OK guys here it is. When I searched for the flash file in the downloads section of the L6 web site I found that when you search for JTV updates, all software in vista you don't get the same list of possible downloads as you do with Windows 7. in Vista the first file you are able to download is Workbench HD v2.1 and the one below it is Monkey v1.66. If you search for JTV updates, all software, Windows 7 downloads you get Workbench HD v2.1, then JTV v2.1, then Monkey v1.66. I figured 'what the hell, what's the worst that could happen?' and even though I'm running Vista I downloaded the Windows 7 file, flashed and it seems to have worked. I can now run Workbench HD alongside HD500 edit and, strangely, Monkey now shows I have v.2.1 installed with the latest version being v2.0!! It's quite late in the UK so I haven't been able to crank the volume to check everything without waking the family. I'll do it tomorrow and report back. It looks as though there has been some lollipop up with the Vista files.

3 right, 3 wrong. For me that means the POD wins ....no patch leads to go screwy, no knobs to get knocked, generally more consistency AND it's got all the amp mods built in for the studio.....AND its cheaper than the pedals, power supplies, tuners, floorboards etc.

It's an interesting debate, especially when Line 6, Boss etc are all trying to copy as close as is possible those old amps. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing, just sayin'.

Awesome! Sounds like a full-on weekend. It'd be great if you posted how it all went.

That's great, thanks for the info. I think I'll probably go for the t. Are you using your L2 as an FRFR guitar rig? I'm only playing pubs and small clubs and I did consider the L2 but thought for the difference in cost the L3 would be the safer bet. Obviously the L2 wins on size and weight but how do you find it for volume?

I have a JTV and HD500 and am considering one of the L3 speakers to complete my 'dream rig'. The question I am not clear about is if I go for the L3m what, if anything, am I missing by not going for the L3t? Whichever I go for will be used as my backline mainly for electric guitar sounds with the occasional JTV acoustic patch.

Agreed. With all the marketing blurb about 'reinventing the guitar amp' I was hoping for more- maybe an FRFR guitar amp sitting below the DT range price wise. As a gigging proposition this seems a non starter which is a great shame and a missed opportunity for L6.

They probably didn't include the HD technology because if they did they would have to price Amplifi at a similar (possibly higher) price than the POD HD so as not to hurt the PODs market share. That would take Amplifi out of the budget for it's target market- the younger/ more casual player.

Ah...that explains it. Thanks for the info, I'll get tweaking!!

This is the first post I have seen talking about the 335 (semi) mod. Especially in position one the v2 update is unrecognisable as the same guitar. Has anyone else noticed the same problem? Overall I have found the update poor so will be rolling it back.

I am currently undertaking a full patch rebuild as I'm moving away from my trusty tube amp and going FRFR (shock horror). Anyways I have been trawling the Customtone archive to get some baseline (not bassline) tones and have found that when I drag some of them into HD500 Edit they are silent. All the amps, effects etc are visible but no sound! Any ideas guys?
