ANY ALTERNATIVE POWER SUPPLY FOR HD500?

I took my HD500 power supply out of the gig bag today and noticed that it had decided to split apart slightly. I attempted to squeeze both halves together but they just want to spring apart slightly. It's a few years old but has been carefully looked after, but now I am wondering if I should get another one before this one splits apart completely. I may gaffa tape it together in the short term. Has this happened to anyone else? Is it best for me to buy another official Line 6 HD500 power supply or can anyone recommend a sturdier more road worthy alternative? I am based in the UK so would welcome suggestions of what's best to buy here. Thanks in advance.
  2. In the process of trying to figure out what a 4 Band Shift EQ is, I put my HD500 on the test bench and measured the frequency response of ALL the EQs in the HD500. I thought you'd find it useful so I'm sharing the results here. For example, what does a 100% shift mean? What does 0% Q mean? And just where is Freq = 38% in the Parametric EQ? Did you know when you set 2.2kHz of the Graphic EQ to -12dB you'll get a +12dB boost (!) at 1kHz before it dips down at 2.2kHz? No wonder it didn't work very well to eliminate a pesky feedback problem, but caused another one instead. Using these can give you insight into which EQ you really want to use. I've attached the most pertinent pictures here (zipped together to make it easy). The only potential problem is the 4 Band Shift Hi Freq which has mismatched L/R channels (~3dB at 1kHz)! Every other EQ and every other setting has perfect L/R balance (less than .1dB mismatch) but this one does not. I've contacted Line 6 support before submitting this here but they see nothing out of the ordinary (i.e., it sounds fine, which may be true, but there's still a mismatch, big enough to be called a bug in my opinion). I've labeled those two graphs channel 1 & 2 because that's what my test equipment calls them. Unfortunately I didn't have the forsight to find out which was left and which was right before I tore down the setup. But the fact of a mismatch remains. Some things you need to know to properly interpret these: An Audio Precision APx525 was used to generate the sound source and measure frequency response. Output = S/PDIF Input 1 = Mic. Input 2 = same. Mic level on back adjusted to give -20dBFS output with the Graphic EQ Unless otherwise indicated, the gain of all the other EQs were set to nominally give -20dBFS. The gains were recorded so you can see which EQs have built-in gain or loss compared to the Graphic EQ. There were no other FX or amps in the signal chain. Sample rate = 44.1kHz (factory default) I have more complete files that contain the actual data (not just pictures) as well as more settings than shown in these few pictures attached here. Until I can find a better place to put it, you can download the entire 160M set of Excel files from: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/56306778/HD500%20Measurements.zip. I am open to ideas of where to put this on a more permanent basis. Enjoy! I hope you find these as useful as I have. ---------------------------- I took the HD500 back into the lab and verified that it's the Left Channel that has the odd frequency response in the Hi Freq portion of the 4 Band Shift EQ. I re-uploaded the Excel files to indicate this and re-uploaded the new 4 Band Shift EQ figures here. ---------------------------- I measured the frequency response of the Q Filter (per meambobbo's post) and attached it here. I also updated the giant zip of Excel files. I think this could emulate a pretty Morley wah if you make toe = hi Freq/hi Q/hi Gain and heel = low Freq/low Q/ low Gain. Also, mix attempts to add the filtered signal to the straight signal, which it does. But the filtered signal has some processing delay so the mix includes some notches in the 4k-8kHz region you may not be expecting. You can see this in the attached graphs. For the signal levels I was using (-20dBFS thru the Graphic Equalizer) you can also see some gain compression with the Q filter. So if you want it clean, stick to the lower Gain levels. ----------------------------- Added a PDF file that lists the frequencies (in Hz) represented by the Parametric Frequency (in %). Updated links to ALL my measurement files: Amp Frequency Response Pre and Full (Excel) Cab DEP Parameters (Excel) Cabs with 121 Ribbon (Excel) Gains (Excel) Mic Frequency Response (Excel) Amp Tone Controls (pdf) Amp-Pre Frequency Response (pdf) Cab Frequency Response (pdf) FX Gain (pdf) Model Pak Frequency Response (pdf) Global EQ (zip) Huge 185M EQ frequency response file (zip) This last one was the original subject matter of this thread.

    Vintage preamp placement?

Hi Guys and gals! I have a question about the placement of the Vintage preamp. Im running a split path Top for acoustic and bottom for mic. Originally I had the vintage pre at the start of each path but it sounded negligible and average at best. Then I shifted the vintage pre to first spot then split the paths. Wowzer it sounded amazing!! Buuuuttt I then effectively have 1 path I think as all effects (eq and boost) afterwards effect both guitar and mic even tho it's split. Why does the preamp sound so much better like this? Do I need to start with the mixer and pan guitar left, mic right (i run mono out anyway) then split paths, then have the preamps? Maybe pramp, then panned mixer, then split? Help haha! Thanks.

    HD500 tones

So I picked up a HD500 which seems amazing except for the fact that I only have an iPad and it isn't compatible with any software to download patches. Only a few of the factory ones really sound decent to me and I've played with building a few. So not sure if I should have gotten a firehawk instead so I could control it with my iPad? Let's face it once I get my main 8-12 tones I likely won't use a whole lot more. 1- is there a place I can get tones listed vs a patch? So I can just type them in. I'm not a country guy but I wouldn't mind building a paisley like tone. 2- did I mess up and should have gotten the firehawk since I don't own a computer...

    HD500X and Midi clock sync

Hi, I'm trying to sync the tempo in the POD by sending the clock from my DAW (Reaper) via midi. I have two problems. 1.The POD only syncs the tempo when I go to the midi page in the system settings or when I press a footswitch. 2.The synchronized tempo always drifts by -/+0.2bpm and takes a bit of time to sync. I tried with both global and preset options for the tempo. Is there some workaround for these problems? What I'm trying to do is to play backing tracks with tempo changes during the playback and I would like the tempo in the POD to sync with the DAW without me having to press footswitches and without any drifting. Any advice or setting i'm missing in the DAW or in the POD? Thank you

    Physical EQ with amp disabled?

Hi all! Im new to the POD HD500 (yea i bought an old one cheap)so this might be an easy fix. Or not haha... I play acoustic and sing so have setup a dual path, input #1 as guitar, input #2 as mic (XLR input). Both paths start with a 'disabled' amp then split into the required EQ settings, comp boost, then rejoin to the reverb unit, volume pedal etc. Looks like this: So my question is how can i use the physical EQ knobs for tweaking overall tone (of the above patch) at various gigs/rooms? Is this ^ whats called "Global EQ" or GEQ"? Hoping its just a setting somewhere or it can be assigned to the mixer. Thanks in advance! Clint
  7. I have posted on this subject before, but now it's to the point where it's intolerable. I normally use the L6 link to my HD500. I used to fire up the pod first, then the amp. After a while it started to hang up during it's startup routine, and when it did that I'd get no sound. I'd look at the lights, and sometimes they were all lit, sometimes none were lit, or sometimes I'd see the wrong combination of lights. And it does this to this day, only more often. After some experimentation and reading something Line 6 wrote, I changed my routine to starting both devices separately, then connecting the L6 link. If I got sound, I could then plug in the L6 link too and everything was rosy. For a while this worked. When the problem resurfaced, I resolved to employ a shut down routine where I'd go to standby, then unplug the L6 link, then wait, then power off, then unplug from the wall. (powering up still required keeping the L6 link unconnected at first) This worked flawlessly for a while, but now it too fails quite often, and any time I don't get the sequence EXACTLY right it seems to always fail. Once the thing fails to initialize correctly, I have no choice but to restart it, and it usually fails 5-15 times after that before eventually starting. I've done a factory reset so many times I could puke. I've flipped the power and standby switches with it unplugged ad nauseum. I have exceptionally clean and uniform power PLUS a power conditioner, so it's not that. When working correctly, I believe the lights and relays go like this when the power switch is thrown: 1) all on; 2) all off; 3) coinciding with the last amp setting (prior to connecting the L6 link). when having the issue, it usually makes it to step 1 or step 2 and hangs there--and I get no sound. A couple times it's even gone to step 3 and looked right but still no sound--but I think in those instances I was doing the multiple restarts in fairly rapid succession. I'm at wits' end, but I figure that were I to ship it to Line 6 they probably wouldn't witness the problem (remember, it's intermittent). Below is a similar thread I did earlier in the problem's evolution. Anybody out there encounter anything like this? Thanks for reading!!!

    HD500 Arrow Key Left broken

Hi, I just got a used HD500 which seems in a good condition. The only flaw i noticed right away is, that the right controls beneath the screen are a little wobbely. It then turned out that the "left arrow" from the dpad is not working, so it is not possible to go left in the signal chain to edit anything. That is actually quite a big thing.. Is there a way to fix this? I am quite good with electronics and stuff, so I might be able to fix it myself. Thank you. Chris
  9. Just got my second DT25 and trying a stereo setup with my HD500 via line6 link. Sounding great but no matter what i try, amp A always sound much louder than amp B. Using dual preamp setup in HD500 with exact same values, and mixer set identical on both paths. Still amp A is louder. Is this normal behaviur? Suggestions other than panning mixer hard L/R and volume on path B to full?

    POD HD 500 Boot Loop

Hi, My HD500 got boot loop today when i connect wrong plug with the power. I search google and forum for advice but nothing help. I do the unplug and press "down" button and then it show update Flash. But i already update the latest flash firmware from 2 week ago. Line6 Monkey wont recognize it. Everytime i try to install drive from line6 Monkey, it download and then fail to lauch install. I delete monkey and reinstall,it work but when i open the monkey again, then it keep show the triangle error beside the drive and the error still happen. I cant boot into global reset. I can boot in test and safe mode by pressing down the right nav and plug in power. But it show the P beside the Flash firmware. What should i do now to save my HD500. PLZ help..Im so desperate!!!
  11. Hey everyone. I currently use my HD500X in my studio for home use. I am going to jam with some friends and they have an extra Marshall Head and Cab there I can plug in so I was hoping I could use my HD500X so I can get the tones I want. I am not a Marshall fan and I don't feel like dragging my EVH, and Cabs over so I was wondering if I can use his Marshall head as a preamp and just run my settings which is amp and cab simulation to get the tone I like ? Is this possible ? What do I need to do in order to get this to work ?
  12. My 10 year old POD XT LIVE died ... I played a gig with it one day and it was dead the next. Here is a video I made when I discovered what was wrong with it.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SN1Kr1XS6k
  13. I'm using a JTV59 guitar, POD HD500 and have all the latest patches / firmware etc. I use the POD HD500 Edit software and the Workbench HD software to setup my patches and models. I think I've just been looking at this too long and can't see the forest for the trees and it probably has an easy solution, so here it is. I move a preset patch to a user location using the POD HD500 edit software. Then I tweek the patch to my liking and set the volume to match the other patches in that bank. I save that patch by sending the selected patch to the HD500 in the location that I created and tweeked it. The volume level is correct after my save until I recall it from the HD500. When I double click it in the HD500 Edit software it gets louder which is my prefered volume level, but when I choose the patch from the HD500 pedal it is not as loud. Any ideas on this?

    Software issues across the board

Having not used my HD500 for a few months, when I went to use it this week, my PC didnt recognize the device through the USB port. The drivers won't load and install correctly, now Monkey wont run (and I have tried Monkey on 2 different PCs) - my wife spent 30 mins on the phone with tech support to no avail. I am ended up resetting (re-installing) windows on my main pc. Then re-installed Monkey. Same crap. I am hoping someone here can advise having had similar issues?? Otherwise I am done with Line6, this being my 2nd board and 3rd product overall. Terrible experience.
  15. I don't want to waffle, so here is what I know: In ABCD mode, bank 1 is controlled via MIDI PC 00-03, bank 2 is 04-07, etc. Bias Head channels are controlled with PC signals 00-24 (user-defined, 1 per preset), supposedly on channel 1 When I switch between rhythm, clean, lead, and breakdown patches in my POD, I want there to be a corresponding amp change in my Bias head. Is this possible? I don't mind using the FS switch above the ABCD switch to change the amp separately, but ideally, I want them on the same switch. Is this possible?

    Hd500 Causing Crash?

Hello, hello. First posting on the forum, so yay. Too bad it's for an ugly, annoying issue: Using Windows 8.1, I'm consistently being stuck with a BSOD when recording / monitoring through Cubase. It happens at random, really. Sometimes I could be working for forty-five minutes to an hour or two, and other times I'll be slapped with that big, aggravating " :( " in a matter of minutes. The problem is always cited as "SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED L6PODHD564.sys" Computer collects information to prevent data loss, blah blah blah... is supposed to restart automatically, but never does. I've looked around the web a bit before showing up, and apparently it's a driver conflict? There are known issues with Logitech webcams and the HD500 drivers, but having disconnected / disabled the webcam, I still run into frequent BSOD's. I've made sure all of my drivers are up-to-date, and I've checked all of m L6 stuff to make sure that it, too, is updated... but it's turning out to be pretty fruitless. And I am stumped. Anyone have anything that they could put forward to this? I realize that Cubase is really good at finding faults to crash on, and that Windows 8.1 is... pretty new, but my hope is that I'm overlooking a simple solution. Any help is appreciated! Note: I'm using a standard ACER Aspire E1-522-7843. Spec-sheet here: http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model-datasheet/NX.M81AA.011

    Using Shuriken with HD500?

Just wondering if anyone knows how to use the 2 together. I plug the Shuriken in to the Variax port on the HD500 (not the +, this is the first version) and I get the guitar to power on the Variax mode but I can't figure out how to bypass the settings on the HD500 to hear just the sounds being produced by the Shuriken. Does anyone know what I need to do? Any help is much appreciated ESPECIALLY since the battery on my Shuriken isn't powering the guitar so I have no choice but to use the HD500 to power the guitar right now.
  18. Am a session musician and although I play lots of instruments I play bass most of the time, I have one of the new James Tyler variax guitars and I must say its a vast improvement and is one of my must have guitars I take it everywhere. I personally would love you to do a new version of the variax bass to have one in my arsenal would make my life a lot more easy, Would love to hear all of your thoughts on the idea and what it must have for example sounds and the desine of the bass ?
  19. Ok, I've decided to dust off my HD500 and use this as my pedal and effects board thru the effects loop of my amp using the 4CM. I haven't gotten that far yet, I just got the HD5 out again, literally dusted off the cobwebs and updated all the drivers, patches, etc. I then created a few new programs after the "firewall" thingie (effects section of the amp), selected FX Loop, then say Reverb, Chorus, whatever. I added a Wah in this area, and the pedal functions fine, I can sweep up and down and see it move in the programming. However I try this as a Volume pedal and I get no movement, no sweep. I did the Vol Pedal re-calibration following I think it was Dave (or Steve's?) video instructions on YouTube, got that straight, tried again, still no Volume pedal. When I try a pre-built model from say the Best of HD500 the Vol Pedal works fine, and I move them into the effects loop section and it works fine. But when I try to insert into a program I get nothing... So, sorry for what maybe a very basic question but I thought I'd ask and perhaps save myself a lot of troubleshooting grief...

Is there a way to view volume levels?

I noticed that when I get new patches from CustomTone, some are significantly more loud than others and it's not for lead and such. I would like the option to use these clean tones alongside each other with the same volume level (not including the lead tones which should be louder). Is there a way I can have this hooked up and check the volume level on the patches and adjust them accordingly with a visual tool? I was thinking of using Reaper to test this out, but I wasn't sure if there was a better option.

    Recording with POD HD500X

Hey guys, I bought the HD500X a couple of weeks ago and I was wondering how you use it to record your stuff? When recording, do you just run the HD500 directly to your PC/Mac using the USB connection or do you connect it to an audio interface first and then take it to your PC? In other words, do you use the HD500X as the audio interface or do you use whatever other audio interface you have as the interface in your DAW?
  22. Hi guys, Am unable to install driver to connect HD500 via USB to MacBook Pro 10.10 (Yosemite). Monkey states that the 7.3.7 driver is not installed, even after I have installed it using Monkey (using "Update Selection"), and separately using dmg, but to not avail. Any ideas?
  23. Hi Everyone, Creating this topic to check if someone has tried the SD's powerstage (power amp > cab) on a live situation. The reason why I ask is for me to decide whether to go for an axe fx or keep using the pod. I mainly use the pod for live use and I guess, won't be using it for any recording stuff. Most forum suggests the axe-fx but I'm having second thoughts as I may just be wasting money as most of the people in the forum are using it for recording. I'm doing live shows and I mostly use Mesa or Fender as my amps for dirt and cleans (sometimes tweed or ac30). Hope someone can chime in their experiences. I'm not here to bash anything, just wanted to get an honest opinion on the pro's and con's as far as my usage is concerned. Thanks in advance.

    Helix and Variax live recording

Hi ..Just thought i would share... This is a recording of a live Jam session over the internet from Canada, No California and Denver. Completely live using Jamkazam.com software. (in realtime) Delay was about 28 ms from each location. 512 kbps constant bit rate, stereo. The additional pads are coming from my HD500 connected with the 1/4 cable from the Variax. Its pretty awesome what we can do now and not even be in the same location https://hearthis.at/joejeffries/supermassivemomentum-live-8-5-2017/ Helix using firmware 2.21, HD500 and Variax

How To Remove Hum From Hd500

Hi all, just got my HD500 unit. Its was used. Works great but when playing directly through the unit using headphones I can hear a relatively loud hum that is constant. When I touch my effects buttons it goes away and is crystal clear. When I touch the looper or up down buttons on the left it goes away by about half. Of course its more pronounced on tones having heavy distortion effects. Seems to be a ground problem. I've checked and its not the cord, nor my guitar. Its definately the POD. Hum if affected only when i touch the pod. Question is how can I fix this without having to run a ground wire to my toe? Thanks.
