  1. Is what I am trying to do possible? I tried searching the forums, YouTube, and multiple Net Search Engines but all I come up with is this config with the Helix, which uses outputs that the HX Stomp doesn't have. Scenario: I want to use the HX Stomp's effects and cab sims with the Synergy Syn1 preamp into my DAW for at home play/recording. I am using the Stomp as my live rig for bass direct to FOH, so I am getting the full use out of it there. Is this possible? If so, any info on cabling/routing to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.
  2. Hey all. This is going to sound dumb but I would love to get some (constructive) thoughts on this... I use my POD HD500X as a pedalboard for its great reverbs, delays, overdrive, modulation, etc. through my VHT Special 6 Ultra combo for guitar and pedal steel guitar. My pedal steel does not have an onboard tone or volume control, which is pretty common for those. Many players use a compact preamp mounted to their steel guitar so they can make tweaks to volume and tone on the fly. I don't intend to use amp emulation most of the time but I may do it on occasion to go direct to the board at church or a gig. Question: what is your best method to use the HD500X as a pre-amp? Subquestion: can I use the hardware knobs to modify treble/mid/bass/presence/volume (sound) without emulating an amp or cabinet? Subqueston: can this be done without using a pedal chain slot? Currently I am using the HD500X with Studio/Direct output mode and input Z set to 3.5m or 1m to neutralize any color to the signal (many, many thanks to @hurghanico for their invaluable advice!) . But I'd like to be able to shape the tone and maybe add a little boost, ideally without using one of the available blocks in the pedal chain. May you have a very Merry Christmas, strong health and the unmistakeable peace of the presence of the Lord this season!
  3. Hello, I am thinking about picking up a HX Stomp to hopefully replace my amp. The only issue is that I run a preamp pedal that uses a 4 cable method to keep my external effects in the fx loop of my amp. The Preamp pedal runs a line into the front of the amp so I can still use my amps preamp, and also runs a line into the fx loop for when I want to use the Preamp pedal. Basically when the preamp pedal is off it acts as if it isn't in the chain and my amp works as normal, but when I turn on my preamp pedal it by passes my amps preamp. To illustrate my normal pedal board is routed this way: First Part: Guitar >>> Front Pedals(Comp, Overdrive, etc..) >>> Preamp (FIrst Input) >>> Amps Normal Input Second Part: Amp FX Send >>> Preamp (Second Input) >>> (Preamp Pedal FX Send) >>> Delay >>> Reverb >>> Amp FX Return I would love to be able to insert my pedalboard as a block in order to take advantage of placing effects in front of my pedals. As far as I can tell, the only way to do this is to chain your guitar into the HX stomp then from your HX Stomps FX Send into your pedal board and back to the FX Return of the Stomp. So my question is, can anyone see a way to make this work either within the HX Stomp itself or even with some external hardware? Thanks!
  4. Hello guys, i have a little question for powercab users. Is Powercab just a cabinet and needs a preamp like a pedalboard or some other pedal doing this function, or is it possible to connect the guitar directly from the guitar jack? Thanks in advance
  5. Hey I just had a thought the other day about possibly creating a preamp through the HX EFFECTS & am wondering if anyone else has tried this?.. OD/DS Pedal ---> EQ Pedal ---> IR Cabinet Sim The idea is the the OD/DS gives u the preamp while the EQ pedal helps you shape the sound a bit more since the first pedal is limited and than add an IR cab to simulate the desired cabinet.
  6. I posted this comment in Ideascale. What do you guys think? I read somewhere that Line 6 is hesitant about this idea because when you separate the preamp and power amp and stick a device between them, you change the character of the interaction between those two units - thus changing the sound of the modeled amps. This is true even when you use a buffer, I think and I think I can attest to this. I had a Fender Blues Deluxe some years back and I did notice a change in the way the amp sounded and felt when I put something in the loop. That said, what if Line6 simply created several modeled power amp models with Fender, Marshall,Vox and Mesa etc. topologies or maybe one power amp module that's reconfigurable to those topologies? After all, do any of us really know how a Mesa (or whatever) Power section really sounds like on its own? I doubt it.
  7. Hello everyone; I was converting my favorite tones from my POD X3 Live to AMPLIFi FX100 tones and everything has working great, but with a few tones I have used preamps and can't find them on the AMPLIFi App. Are the preamps included? (American Classic, Console, Lo-Fi, Modern, Vintage & Vintage UK). Is there an alternative for the preamps in this new gen? (In case the preamps are not part of AMPLIFi FX100 software). That's all. I'm very happy with my pedal and I really feels the upgrade in a very minimalistic way. Thanks in advance for your time.
  8. Hi Guys and gals! I have a question about the placement of the Vintage preamp. Im running a split path Top for acoustic and bottom for mic. Originally I had the vintage pre at the start of each path but it sounded negligible and average at best. Then I shifted the vintage pre to first spot then split the paths. Wowzer it sounded amazing!! Buuuuttt I then effectively have 1 path I think as all effects (eq and boost) afterwards effect both guitar and mic even tho it's split. Why does the preamp sound so much better like this? Do I need to start with the mixer and pan guitar left, mic right (i run mono out anyway) then split paths, then have the preamps? Maybe pramp, then panned mixer, then split? Help haha! Thanks.
  9. Hello guys. I'm a complete newbie when it comes to all this having just used amp heads, cabinets and pedals for years. I'm sure this has been answered a million times but I'm struggling with the tone and I'm not sure if I've set my patch up correctly. Using the 4 CM do I need to put in a preamp block or not? At the moment I don't and everything sounds quite off to me. I'm going I to an orange cr120 head and having to go I to the clean channel which only has a treble/ bass control and if I try to go into the dirty channel, who h has bass treble and mids I lose volume unless the gain is cranked all the way up which then affects the sound of any distortion or overdrive pedals I e put in my patch. Sorry if I haven't explained this very well. I'll post a picture of my patch below
  10. I was in rehearsals the other day with my Helix expecting to go straight into a desk but the sound engineer wasn't around to get things running, however there was a line 6 spider bogner collab amp on the stage so I decided to plug into it. I then realised it had a Preamp out and power amp in section on the back. I think i plugged into the Preamp hoping to bypass the amp completely and just for the helix to be amplified. It actually sounded great without turning my amp sims off. This has confused me though! Did the amp just become a speaker or would it have coloured the sound?
  11. Question: HOw do you guys play all this amp, preamp, cabinet presets with a real amp? Can't figure it out. Do you run with a mixer or? Example: I practise and play on stage with a Blackstar ID260. Got everything turned down to the NO effect channel. Connect my Helix with the input of the amp. Now, all preset models in the Helix with an amp, or preamp sound horrible. Only thing to do is get rid of this stuff. I don't want to use the 4cm because of plug and play gigs. How do I get this really heavy sound?
  12. Hi All I have inherited an old Line 6 Pod 2 that still works perfectly after more than a decade of abuse. I'm trying to use it as a preamp to boost a vocal signal up to line level for input into my PC. Any advice on settings? Thanks in advance
  13. So after weeks of waiting for a Darkglass Alpha Omega to be in stock on sweetwater, I FINALLY got my hands on one. Within 30-60 minutes I was able to dial in a really crunchy dirty bass tone that I was pretty happy with. I left my initial impressions in a reddit post on r/bass. My signal chain was bass > Alpha Omega > Helix {noise gate > LA Compressor > Woody Blue > IR } I didn't find out about the Obsidian 7000 until yesterday, and can't believe I didn't notice the naming pun (Darkglass = Obsidian; 7000 = 7k) lol. I've had my Helix Rack unit for about 4 weeks now but due to work and school, haven't been able to sit with it for hours on end. When I wanted to get a preamp/drive bass pedal, the B7k was the other contender based on its universal acclaim and usage by a lot of my favorite bassists. So, for lollipops and giggles I wanted to see if I can get AS GOOD of a tone with all Helix and the Obsidian 7000. ....Yes.....a thousand times yes. I got a BETTER tone (in my opinion). In my initial impressions of the Alpha Omega, I noted how the low-end saturation bothered me. It sounds really loose and flubby to my ears. The switches on the Alpha Omega are binary for their boosts compared to the B7k which has 3 way toggle (On-Off-Cut). The blend control on the Obsidian 7000 is more fine grained compared to the Alpha Omega. I prefer this because even adjusting the blend on the Alpha Omega brings up that dreaded (to me) low-end saturation. I haven't had time to record some A-B comparisons, but I can if anyone would like. All in all, I'm sending back the Alpha Omega because I'm able to get a bass tone I like and have been searching for with the Helix. I lollipop love this thing.
  14. I couldn't find anything on this by searching the forum, but has anyone tried using a preamp block as if it were an overdrive/distortion block. I got the idea from seeing the number of overdrive pedals being marketed as being a "Marshall in a box," and I expect they are modeled on the preamps of Marshall amps. If that makes a good overdrive, then maybe a model of an actual preamp would work similarly. An obvious downside is how much more DSP a preamp block requires over an overdrive block. But assume we have DSP to spare for this preset. I tried this using the Brit 2204 preamp into the WhoWatt amp/cab. My thinking was, the 2204 gives a lot of gain, and the WhoWatt seems to have a lot of headroom to accomodate a strong signal, but still accepts overdriven signals well. The result was acceptable, but I had to turn the treble on the 2204 preamp all the way down, and the bass most of the way up to get something like the sound I was expecting. I should have tried it with less gain-heavy preamps, but I don't have my Helix with me at the moment. I have a couple questions: 1. Does anyone know whether the preamp blocks actually send a "louder" signal than an overdrive block? (For that matter, do physical preamps send higher amplitude signals than physical overdrive pedals?) 2. Do the "amp in a box" pedals attempt to model just the preamp stage, or do they attempt to also model the power amp, just at a low amplitude? 3. Has anyone else tried this and, if so, what combinations worked?
  15. Just ordered a mic preamp and it's on its way.. I want to connect it to my Pod HD Pro X & as far as I know the best way to do this is to connect it to a line level input. However, in the manual it stated that the line input in the Pod HD Pro X is unbalanced. Now the real question: Will it deteriorate its sound if I connect my preamp to an unbalanced input? or is it better if I connect my preamp to the mic input and set the mic gain on the pod really low. Btw here is the chain going to look like: Shure sm7b > Preamp > Pod HD Pro X. I really dont want to buy an audio interface since the one in Pod is good enough to connect to my daw. Although, I'll buy one only if I have to  Thanks.
  16. Been a Helix user for almost 10 months but have only used it for guitar. I've been using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 for my voiceover work and thought I'd give my Helix a shot. I'm confused about how to set levels and hoping you guys can help out. I've got my SM7 plugged into the Helix mic input and after going to the Global Settings page I was finally able to get a mic signal adjusting the input gain there. (I thought the input was dead for a while.) This is sounding good and I'm getting a good signal into Logic. But when I try to experiment with the "Studio Tube Pre" block I'm getting distortion. Am I missing something? Curious to hear how you guys are setting mic levels while also using other blocks like the Studio Tube Pre. Thanks.
  17. Hi everyone, what about something a little bit smaller than POD? ;) http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Amp-Preamp-Stompbox-with-effects-loop-and-headphone-output/836960-23508
  18. Looking around, I noticed a few reports of people's mic pres in the Helix burning out/not working anymore due to plugging in mics with the +48v option on and I'm fairly sure I've done that a few times in the past before :( When I throw the Studio Tube Pre into my signal chain, I have to put the level and gain at essentially 10 to get a usable signal. On top of that, my "Mic In Gain" selection in the global settings doesn't make a discernible difference whether it's at +0db or +60db. I've started using a dedicated phantom power unit box and left the switch on the Helix off, but there's no difference in volume or tone. This has been my go-to piece of equipment since December and I really hope that I'm just mentally deficient and am just missing a setting somewhere, and that my gear isn't completed screwed. Thanks!
  19. I've been having a blast getting my Helix to work with the DT. I have some really good tones that I am constructing based on my HD500 tones. I have noticed that the preamp settings for several amps are missing the "Presence" control and the Vox amps are missing the "Cut" setting. Is this an oversight or on purpose? If it's on purpose, why were they left off? Presence is a vital setting on most amps. It may modify the negative feedback loop or eq settings. I'm just trying to understand the implementation strategy for this setting. Thanks.
  20. Hi Guys, I have a question: if I want to connect my mic200 preamp into my audio interface UX1, which of these 2 options is the right way? 1) Mic into preamp input with XLRS cable --> XLRS cable from preamp output into UX1 front Mic XLRS input. 2) Mic into preamp input with XLRS cable --> XLRS cable from preamp output into UX1 1/4 Line input on the back? (which one? 2/R or 1/L?) thanks Leo
  21. Hey folks, I have a question. Of course I do, otherwise why would I be here? Anyway, I'm in a small band one that's not planning on going anywhere beyond the local pub scene. The amp I'm using is good, but it has no effects (not even reverb) what it does have is the ability to run a second preamp through the poweramp. My question is can I use the PODHD300 in this fashion (of course turning off the poweramp and cab simulations) and what kind of cables should I use? I'm an experienced guitarist but I've never done anything like that before. the amp in question is a Marshall 6101. I know I can use the POD as a multi effects board but I don't really like the way it sounds like that. I'm thinking it would sound better using the digital preamps but I've no clue how to hook it up. Any ideas?
  22. I recently purchased a GAP Pre73 MKII and a Shure SM7. I'd like to use both of these to record vocals through my POD HD500, but I'm a little confused as to the proper way to set this up. Here's what I'm doing: My SM7 is going into the Pre73's Mic In via an XLR cable, and then the Pre73's output is going through a balanced TRS cable to the POD's Aux in. I read in the manual that the Aux In is unbalanced. Will this negatively affect my signal, or if I use a balanced TRS cable, will the signal stay balanced? Is there a better way to set this up, or a special configuration I need to use? When I connect the SM7 to the POD directly, via XLR to the POD's Mic In, the level in my DAW seems great and the mic is sufficiently loud (and the SM7 is a notoriously quiet mic). When I use my aforementioned setup, the level in my DAW is very low, even though I have both knobs on my Pre73 cranked to max. This has led me to believe I am doing something wrong. For what it's worth, I am using high-quality Mogami cables. As a somewhat-related sidenote, is it possible to run my Pre73 as part of an "fx loop"? Would there be a benefit to this? I'd like to use the Pre73 to warm up my bass and I figure that could be a way to do it, or should I simply plug the bass into the Pre73, and then the Pre73 into the POD? Thanks for reading this and thanks for the help. The world of pro audio sometimes befuddles my brain, so I really appreciate it.
  23. I mean, the amp models are part of we paid for when we bought the unit. That's what makes it attractive to those who do not have financial resources to get a monster rig. For someone who wants to get the most out of the amp models and is a gigging musician with no uber-hyped tube amp, what would you suggest? 1. Get a portable power amp or speaker and use the preamps models (if there's no PA)? 2. Just rely on the amp/cabinet models and go directly to PA? Any suggestions?
  24. Hi, I'm having a few problems with connecting these two devices. I've set the UX2 up to recognize the mic so I'm getting signal and can hear it but I have to crank the input gain to about 9 to get anything decent out of it! And I'm using the word "decent" very lightly. The resulting sound is full of reverb and noise. I'm wondering if this is a general problem when using a UX2 and a condenser mic. I've borrowed this mic off a friend who uses it with a Sapphire Pro 14 and he gets beautiful recordings. Clear and crisp. Do I need to amp the signal before it reaches the UX2 preamp? Any help is greatly appreciated Thanks Patrick
  25. Hello, I have an issue with my first gen HD100. When plugged into my 2x12 Avatar cab, even with the master and channel volume all the way up, the amp is extremely quiet. It is still making noise and working but it isn't even as loud as a 5 watt amp. I have already tried changing the power tubes to a matched quad of JJ 6l6s and that did nothing. I am pretty sure it is an issue in the preamp stage since when I plug my guitar into the "poweramp in" I can get loud volumes out of the amp. Just not when running through the normal input... anyone have any ideas?
