JTV Acoustic - still not getting a really good sound

Recommended Posts

I am still struggling to get a really good acoustic sound from my JTV.  For strumming it is usually "OK" but when I finger pick there is some strangeness happening- and it is not on electric models.

For example when I play the 4th fret of the 4th string (that would be an F# I believe) using the acoustic 5 model (switch all the way in neck position) I get a totally unacceptable hum or buzz.  It is not fret buzz or at least it is not audible with other models.  Definitely a vibe killer!

I am now playing through an HD500x and an L2T by the way.  A big reason for going this whole L6 route vs my tube amp and regular guitar is the ability to switch between acoustic and electric on the fly.  So I reallllly need to solve this problem.  Could it be something wrong with my guitar itself?

Thanks folks!

I found the L6 acoustic patches already there, so I checked them out.  They seem to work much better (with multiple EQ blocks and no acoustic amp block, either) and they also use Acoustic 1 which (at least on my guitar) does not have the buzz problem.  So I am now good to go :-)

What you're describing may be the dreaded "fan rattle". It's a known problem on the L2T's...something about the original design of the fan assembly causes it to rattle with certain frequencies at louder volumes. If that's what's going on, it needs to be replaced, cause it ain't gonna get better, and it's got nothing to do with the guitar. Open a service ticket and they'll tell you where to take the amp. I had the same problem...took two tries for the repair to stick, but it's fine now.

The L2T is only 5 days old so I can just send it back for replacement.  Thanks for the advice!

Acoustic 5 has a body strong resonance at that F# in the model and it can be a bit overpowering - it will also appear for the same note on the A and E strings as well (or does on my guitar).  It doesn't appear on other Acoustic models but I also prefer that body generally for the Acoustic sound as it sounds fuller.

If it is turning into a buzz then it is probably overloading something in the signal chain.  I would suggest using a parametric EQ on the HD500X at the start of the chain to cut significantly at that point - as with anything EQ on and HD this will be trial and error to find the correct % value and I suggest you find it by starting with a boost for a narrow band until you isolate the frequency and then change the boost into a cut.

I have also found that as it is a body resonance that it varies with the virtual mic placement and is strongest in the middle (when the mic position is about level with the soundhole) going with mic positions by the bridge or neck and it is not quite so dominating (10 and 0 on the tone knob)

Just to give you all an update... I used the Dream Rig for a gig with Acoustic 1 and the volume was never very loud, so the fan rattle did not appear.  But I sent it back just to be on the safe side!  And... I just sent back my HD500X (within the 30 day no questions asked window) and bought a 3-month old Helix :-)

Ha, I was actually going to recommend Helix if you could swing it. The Helix LA Compressor, Studio Tube Preamp and parametric eq makes the Variax acoustic models, as well as real acoustic guitars, sound amazing!

Oh, and I made an IR of the Variax acoustic J model Deconvolved with the Variax single coil neck pickup.

Running Helix dual signal path with one path Variax acoustic j model and the other variax mag neck pickup through the acoustic j IR. Really fills out the overall sound.

Links are on the Helix site.
