Customtone & the digital neighborhood

I was building a bunch of patches over the weekend for an upcoming thing. More classic rock/crunch inspired than anything else. I made what I needed pretty quick but after also went on Customtone and searched through and found a couple other patches where I found some cool elements to bring in on a few sounds. I keep forgetting about it over there. There are over 1500 tones on it. (Count is like 1900+ but there seems to be a lot of duplicates or reloads, etc.)

As an aside, it seems the amount of people coming in to do a sales pitch on their "latest set of preset bundles" to sell has been increasing. I'm not against capitalism and I've bought a few specialized ones here and there but in general, usually (85% of the time) feel like, "is that it?" I'll keep the who comments to myself. Its ironic how Line 6 (a commercial concern) is giving away these great firmware updates on a product I initially bought "as-is" but members of the community are now so actively looking to get paid to put together stuff that Line 6 made so easy for them to make in the first place....

This shouldn't surprise you. Our entire economy is based on facilitating laziness. It's why we're all fat now...we used to have to move to get things...now we just wait for Amazon to dump stuff on the porch.;)

It's a tough call, I think. On the one hand, it does seem ridiculous to pay for something I could do myself.

On the other hand, I have created a bunch of very simple patches with every amp hooked up with a Variax Les Paul and a Variax Strat. Just the amp, the guitar and I think I just threw in a reverb at the end. Just for a place to quickly go through amps. I then set 4 snapshots to run through the gamut of drive settings. Clean, a little dirty, crunchy an full on. And I didn't get too particular about what the settings were. Around 1-2, 4-5, 7-8 and 10.  I changed nothing else. Just that little exercise took several hours over several days. I offered it to everybody but I did think it was a lot of work/time to offer for free. So I also get not wanting to just give away something that can take a significant amount of time.

In the end, I suppose it's between the buyer and seller and none of my business. If you have a patch to sell and can find a buyer, who am I to judge?

It's annoying and frustrating to learn that someone made money from one of your preset, given out for FREE. I have had hundreds of requests to give unreleased preset... people pestering me for them... presets that took several days to make and not even a thank you.

Your fellow man is (mostly) horrible...if you don't want to see someone else monetizing something you created, then don't give it away.

It sounds like you might be referring to me. If you are I want to make it clear no one offered what I did for money. I'll go back and fix my post so it doesn't seem like that.

I was talking in general.

It is great to be able to share, if ones want to but some people just compile a set of tones from various sources on a CD (or a link) and sell it on... possibly without even changing a setting.  Nothing against people that create their own and sell them.

Ya know, I seem to remember some offers on E-Bay like that when the POD X3 was around. That was pretty low in my opinion as well.

Here's my take on it which is probably not a very popular one.

There's nothing precluding anyone from building their own patches on the Helix except for a lack of knowledge and skills.  Everything is there in the presets, the documentation, and in hints and directions on this and numerous YouTube videos to help anyone that has the initiative to accomplish whatever kind of tone they want by themselves.  In the year and a half I've owned my Helix I've probably built well over a hundred patches.  I have no special insight or ability.  I just buckled down and learned how to do it and now it only takes a few minutes for me to craft a custom preset to fit my needs specifically.

If people want to pay for someone else's time and effort in learning how to build patches, well...that's the price one pays if you don't have the initiative or desire to learn how to do it.  The only reason someone can ever profit from it is if there are people like that out there.  If not, they won't make anything.  It's the free market at work.....

I'm more concerned about my edited strikethrough/replacement than presets. Just sayin' - it's pretty common practice these days for others to exploit any information you willingly offer. Facebook, Google, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. come to mind.
