3.0 Update Problems. Please Help!

I am hoping I can get some expert advice about this here. I loaded the 3.0 update and the new Factory Presets are way lower in volume and horrible. I posted about this elsewhere, and I think we all agree, that is just how it is and to load back in the backup Factory Presets.

Here is the issue I am having however, in some of these presets, if I try to change an amp model, most of my options are grayed out. Might make sense if I am using up the DSP, but in the old Factory Preset, same set up, I have the option of changing the amps. I have seen this in a lot of places on the new update even when it comes to using effects.

Here is what I did for the update:

  • Full Back up of Helix
  • opened L6 Update, clicked on the available update and downloaded it to the Helix
  • Opened HX Edit, realized it need to be updated. Did the update and relaunched
  • Exported all of my setlists as a back up
  • turned off unit, held down buttons 7&8 to restore factory presets in order to give the artist presets a look
  • Dragged some of my setlists back into unused setlist folders

When I noticed the weird things going on with effects and amps not being available. I redid the above and still getting the same thing.

I am including some pictures here of what I am talking about. The first picture is of Brt 2204 new preset. You can see the amp model is selected and many options are not available. On the first picture. On the second picture is the old preset and everything looks as it should. 1826080801_ScreenShot2020-11-22at8_53_44AM.thumb.png.a83faa7346abe330541a96d49688f40f.png

Hi Codamedia,

I was afraid I was running out of DSP, but the question is why in the old Factory 1 of Brt 2204 do I have access to all the amp models if I want to change it, but in the new Factory 1 of Brt 2204, do I only have access to 50% of the amps? You can see in the pictures, they are identical except for the Gray Flanger which if I were to switch it out, same issue. I am doing a complete reinstall again. Something is not quite right with this.

Hi,

Looking at the screenshots you have supplied, it looks as if you have run low on DSP power, so some items become unavailable and appear dimmed (greyed) out. By removing the flanger from the signal chain, that then frees up more processing power and then other items become available once more.

In the example you supplied, it shows that everything is placed on the top path which uses just one of the 2 DSP chips available. If you route the top path to the lower path then you can take advantage of the second DSP chip and hopefully most amps and effect will be available for you too use.

I hope this helps/makes sense.

I’m not totally understand what you’re saying the issue is. Line 6 changed the factory presets this go around, so DSP usage is going to be a little different. As far as things sounding different, you should do a Restore from Backup after updating to get your global settings back to the way they were before updating. Several of those can affect gain staging.

Also, make sure you’re replacing kind for kind when doing your comparisons here. Was the original flanger block stereo?

Are you 100% certain you are comparing apples to apples.

  • The new preset contains the STEREO version of the Gray Flanger. Indeed, it eats enough DSP that your options become limited.
  • If you simply change that to the MONO version of the Gray Flanger all of the amps become available! (just verified this on my Helix)

So.... When you say you tried the Gray Flanger in the OLD preset, did you insert the MONO or STEREO version? If you inserted the MONO Version, that's your difference!

Do you guys have the same thing on the new Factory 1 Brt 2204? or is it my Helix that is doing this?

Hi again'

I just loaded that preset to check out the issue.

As noted by "codamedia" in the post above - that flanger is stereo and you can change it to mono.

Even better, if you move the Flanger, Delay and Reverb to Path 2 you can even add a Poly Pitch without any problem.

Hope this help/makes sense.

Hi data commando and phil_m,

Yes. This all makes sense and what I was hoping was going on, but with a simple preset like the Brt 2204, I am not sure what they could have changed to take up so much DSP other than the flange. I am making both presets the same and the pictures below will show what is going on. First picture is new Factory 1 with Brt 2204. Here. Next post will have other picture with older Factory Reset

The Flange is stereo...... that's the difference! Stereo effects take a huge amount of resources..

Change it to mono or remove it and you gain access to ALL amps!

Forum will not let me post the other picture. However,  Factory 1 Brt 2204 with 3.0 update has 22 amp models grayed out. Old Factory 1 Preset Brt 2204 only has two models grayed out. I set up both presets exactly the same with the gray flanger.

Codamedia. That was it! I knew it had to be something really stupid. I was just really concerned that something was wrong with my install because the new Factory Presets sound really bad compared to the older ones. Thanks so much and sorry for being a PITA!

I am using a 15 foot USB cable (Product actually says 16ft, but it is 15 and then the plugs which is about 15.5) and so I was concerned that maybe I was corrupting the data and wanted to make sure this was working properly.

  • Thanks 1

I prefer to call them "simple oversights" rather than "really stupid" - LOL!

I was foiled by the MONO/STEREO option once before... it drove me nuts trying to figure out what was different because it isn't obvious at a glance.

Yup. Drove me crazy. I have had some problems before with an XT Live that was not my error, so I get a little squeamish around updates.

Also, is it me or is the 12 string pitch kind of blah?

I think like pretty much all of these types of effects, what you get out of it is highly dependent on your playing style. To me it sounds best with arpeggiated picking or lighter strumming. If you try to use it with aggressive strumming the effect sort of gets lost.

Hello, I made the update, but at the time of the rebuild he did it crashed. So I have the home screen on which we see that firmware 3.00 has been installed and rebuilt 584. I turn it off it gives me the same thing by turning it back on. As it is not really on, the computer does not recognize it. What to do?

I saw that you have posted several times and nobody has replied yet.

I guess that English is not your first language.

I will try to help.

I will suggest that you restart your HELIX while holding down the Foot switches 10&11 (upgrade presets to latest format ). If this does not fix the boot problem - then follow these instructions.

IMPORTANT! In the unlikely event that your update fails, please follow the steps below:

  1. Unplug the USB cable from both the back of your Helix and the computer.
  2. Turn your Helix/HX device off and on.
  3. Reconnect the USB cable to your Helix/HX device and the computer.
  4. Download, install, and launch the latest version of Line 6 Updater. In a failure state, the device will not connect to HX Edit.
  5. Select your device and try updating to the latest firmware again.
    • If the device does not show up in Line 6 Updater after these steps, try a different USB cable and/or USB port.
    • If it still doesn't show up, try a different computer

Hope this helps/makes sense

Good luck.
