The Ever Awful Quacking Piezo

Sounds like you may be clipping. Are you using the mags or model when this happens? -

You tha' man! Uh...I use the p.s if that means power supply. And I guess number 5 would be...Turn everything on, make viguple sure everything is set up correctly and...no sound until I turn everything off by unplugging the HD and the DT and turning it all back on. (so rare that one gets to use the word Viguple in a sentence! BOOYA!!!) I think it is the HD's fault too. how do you suggest a further troubleshoot?

I guess it's just me. ".....One is the loneliest number that you'll ever know."

Thanx! But I do fine with my external interface.

Love my gear! Wish there was a dedicated Dream Rig forum. But I don't think this is a dream rig specific observation and question. Every time I go to crank up my rig (Dt50 2x12, HD500, JTV 69), I hold my breath. Sometimes it works straight away. I plug in, strum a chord and Booya!!! I'm rockin the house! Other times, no joy! no sound until I turn everything off and restart it all. Sometimes the topologies start switching randomly on the DT until I turn turn everything off and restart. Sometimes the Pod turns off and restarts on its own. Loud pops every now and then, and other silly, tweaky random stuff The vast majority of time, I've got no problems, but always in the back of my mind, i am waiting nervously for the day that the reboot doesn't work at all. Worst is, what happens if it happens at a gig! That would get me to cussin' loud and mean! Does anyone else experience this type tweaky stuff with the DT+HD combo? Why do it do what it do? Something to be said for plugging one guitar via one cable into one amp! Never had a problem doing that! Worked every time!!! Thoughts? Contributions?

Sumptin's definitely amiss for me! Using the HD as an interface ain't working well at all for me.

A customtone area that also includes workbench settings. -
Ah.

DEP=Deep Editing Parameters. If you are using HD Edit go to the amp block. At the bottom of the Amp section you will see "Amp Parameters" and "Cab Parameters" there you can adjust power amp distortion, sag, bias, low cut etc. You can also select the mic that you are using. This is all just different filters and eq'ing that is designed to imitate or "model" the real deal. Play with that stuff in the amp section and see what you get. If you don't gig, then don't worry about turning the amp up loud and adjusting your patches at a loud volume. A trap that a lot of people get themselves into, me included initially, is dialing in a fantastic tone in my bedroom at a low volume, then running to band rehearsal eager to show off my new stuff and having it sound like crap when I turn the amp up to play. So if you want your stuff sounding right when you play a gig or rehearse, you need to crank that puppy up and hear what it sounds like at volume. Full models mimmic both the pre-amp section of an amplifier and the power amp section. Most people recommend that you use only the Pre models when hooked up to the DT because the DT has a great tube power amp section that you could drive to get a great tone. To me it's hit or miss. I use my ears to determine if a pre or full model sounds best. When you are selecting an amp to play with, you will see, for example, "Gibtone" scroll a little further and you will find "Gibtone pre". that is the case with all the amp selections. Play with those and notice what happens to the DEP when you select Pre vs. Full. Someone more knowledgeable, please weigh in on the Full model vs. Pre Model! When you are using an amp model in the Pod, the amp switches to channel "A" automatically. when you turn the amp model off it switches to channel "B". The easiest way for me to explain it to you is for you to do it on the POD itself. Use the direction key to put the little arrow over the amp block in the signal chain. Press the enter button to turn the amp on and off. This will switch you from channel "A" to channel "B". Dial that "B" channel in and make it sound good and use it to compare the patch you are building in the Pod. If you really want to assign the amp block to a foot switch, go to the HD edit software -> Controllers-> Models->Footswitch assign and I think that's it. Cheers

Really? $1500 is not really expensive for a quality amp in the case of the DT50 2x12. I have a Two Rock that set me back over $3K and it sounds great but then again so does my DT50 2x12 at half the cost. I did a benefit show with a few very well known guitarists (I hate name dropping!) One had a $15k Dumble and he complimented my tone from my $1K DT. In the case of the DT amps, I feel you get way more than you pay for which for me makes them a pretty good bargain.

I have found that using the HD as the interface in Garageband and Logic Pro 9 unusable. The tone that I play is not the tone that gets recorded and I find it very noisy. I'm sure I am doing something wrong. Which is why I prefer to use a separate interface (M-Audio to be specific). How has it worked for you?
-
Yes. I prefer going through my own interface though.
-
DT25 or DT50. They are made for each other!

Keep your ears on when adjusting the mixer volume. Too much reduction in that setting may color your tone.

Variax And Normal Guitar Into Pod Hd500?

You truly are an "über guru"! You can tell the weight differential of a Variax with and without a battery in the battery box! I have much to learn master! ;^p -

Why do you take the battery out? Is there a benefit to that? -
Where Is The Dream Rig...
Tboneous replied to Tboneous's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I am with you all the way! It seems someone didn't like me questioning the motivation of another poster on this thread and I got a "thumbs down" for trying to root out the real issue for not wanting a "Dream Rig" specific forum. I meant no harm. I'm just excited about my gear and want to get the most out of it. My apologies to those who may feel that asking someone to clarify themselves is disagreeable. With that said.... You are right!!! There are no "sides" at all. We are all Line6'ers! Every corner of this forum has help me immensely in getting my tone together! Every question asked and answered helps us all! And you are right again, that in lieu of a dedicated "Dream Rig" forum or sub-forum, the most logical place to post Dream Rig stuff is on the DT forum. But that still is a poor substitute for a dedicated Dream Rig forum, because adjusting my stacked lipstick pickups output on my hollow body in workbench and altering the Class A/B on a Gibtone while assigning the drive of the Gibtone to the tone knob on the JTV69 and blending the mag pickups with exp2 and assigning the output of the tube screamer to my JTV69 volume knob is very very Dream Rig Specific! How wonderful it would be to share that with the admitted minority of Dream Rig owners. How cool would it be to have the ability to share that very specific customtone with other Dream Riggers without having to search through every tone listed that is clearly not designed for a Dream Rig. Why overlook the minority of people who have purchased some of the most expensive stuff that Line 6 makes. "The tyranny of the majority shall not supersede the rights of the minority" (My 7 year old is learning about Plato so I thought I'd throw that one in for fun!) :P I don't believe that a dedicated forum for all that stuff is too much to ask. No offense meant to anyone. Just talking to my fellow Line 6'ers! Now...Get out there and play some music!!! -
Use the Hd edit software when tweaking your patches. It's much easier to use than the windows on the pod. You will be able to switch and save topologies through the software as well. There's lots to play with between the pod and the DT. What output are you using? Have you played with the DEP? Are you able to adjust your patches at gig volume? Are you using pre or full models? It took me a while to dial all this stuff in. Throw in the Variax and theres even more to tweak. But it is worth it! Start with a goal first. "I want a clean full bodied Bassman tone" for example. Then play with your gear until you get what you are looking for. I usually start with 2 reverbs at the end of my signal chain. A "Room" and a "Spring" then I pick my amp. I have one patch that is a preamp and the another is the full model. Get those up and running before you start adding other fx. Also I find that centering the mixer helps. The pod pans let and right by default. Another tip. Dial in channel "B" so that is sounds rockin. Then build a patch in the pod. Assign the amp model to a foot switch so you can toggle it on/off. Dial in your tone on the Pod. Then you can A/B the Pod tone that will be on channel "A" with the rockin tone you dialed in on channel "B". This is a good way to dial in your levels as well Start small, stick with it cause it is worth it! Hope this helps!

Welcome to the tweaking lounge! Each amp has different volumes. for example the clean Soldano is much softer than the Blackface Vib. Keep that in mind. These are the things that helped me.... 1. Use the Hd Edit software when editing patches. It is much easier than scrolling through windows on the Pod. 2. Use the workbench to get your Variax model volume in line with your mag pickup volume. From the factory some of the model volumes are really hot. 3. Remember that fx have volume consequences. i.e If there is a distortion in the fx chain, check the output of the distortion. it may be too hot. 4. If you are using the Dream Rig to gig or any rig for that matter, you must MUST set your patches at volume. Meaning, turn it up like you are rocking a gig, then dial it in. 5. Make sure your output settings are where you want them. I use Combo Front and I tweak the focus a bit. Some like direct/studio. Personal choice. Figure it out. Keep in mind that if you had physical access to all of the amplifiers that are represented in the Pod HD500, you'd have a crowded living room! :P All of theses amps if you had them would require that you sit down with each of them and play with them to get them to sound the way you want them to. You won't turn up a 100 watt Boogie as loud as you would turn up a 50 watt Fender Bassman. Each is going to be eq'ed different and you may mic a 1x12 combo differently than you would mic a 4x12 stack. There is a boat load of fx that not only will color your tone, but will have an effect on your volume. Start small. pick one amp that you like. work with it until you get a kick butt tone out of it, then go from there. You are not alone! I had the same issue, stick with it.

Variax And Normal Guitar Into Pod Hd500?
Tboneous replied to sozeg's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
You don't need to use both the VDI and the 1/4 inch to switch between the models and the mag pickups. The VDI cable can carry both signals. Just make the adjustment in your input settings for each patch and the modeling will turn off when you select the patch that is set up for mags. There is a lot of fun to be had by blending both the model and the mag pickups. -
Where Is The Dream Rig...
Tboneous replied to Tboneous's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
The people have spoken. I am curious...Why are you opposed to a dedicated forum? Clearly a lot of people want it and yet you seem dedicated to opposing this move. What's the deal? A dedicated Dream Rig Forum would hurt no one. It would help those of us who would love the platform and it would be a great addition to the Line 6 Support forum. So what is the real problem?
