  1. If $hitty $6 ear buds sounds better than the Alto, there's something wrong with it.
  2. No two final output devices are going to sound exactly the same...don't care what anyone says. That being said, IF your live rig is FRFR, headphones are a perfectly viable tweaking tool, provided that you're using an appropriate set. If you're using a regular amp and cab, then you can forget it. You won't even get close. I use a pair of AKG 240S cans that get me very close to what I get from my L2T. It's never gonna be identical, but it's damn close...minimal tweaking required between them. Stick with pairs that are billed as "studio" or "studio monitor" headphones...something that will give you a reasonably flat response. If it says "Dr. Dre" on it, it's not the tool for the job. There are tons of options from the reasonably priced, to the absurd. The AKG's are ~$100 most places, and sound great. Been using them for years.
  3. Electronics shouldn't smell like they're on fire. This is generally what we refer to as "bad"...
  4. Well I for one am glad this is finally being discussed openly. Perhaps I can finally put an end to all of those sleepless nights, brought on by a lack of tuner granularity...or was it the damn strobe? ;)
  5. This is about time that someone will claim that they don't need a tuner anyway, because of the way their left big toe vibrates when things aren't "just right"...
  6. Not long enough to avoid complaints about the tuner...;)
  7. Well honestly, whether it works or not, what did you expect them to say? "Oops, we f#@&!d up?". It's just like a car accident...never admit fault, not even for a little fender-bender. Eyes front, no talking, call a lawyer...;)
  8. Volume is volume. It doesn't really matter where you do your adjusting. Using a patch's channel volume, the mixer block, or the POD's master volume will all accomplish the same thing. It's either not enough, to much, or just right.
  9. Clipping is not exactly a "stealthy" problem. The little red "idiot lights" are a nice touch, but it's not like it will go unnoticed if you don't have 'em.
  10. Ideascale is just about the only chance you've got. Get enough people to whine incessantly vote for something, they might throw you a bone...;)
  11. FedEx it, or gas up the tank and head out.... If you're heading for the "local" service center, I'd put in a call first. There's no guarantee that they've ever seen a JTV before. I've got and "authorized service center" 5 minutes away, but they're an electronics repair shop...amps, PAs, etc. They laughed when I asked (hypothetically) if they would work on a JTV. You might have to send it back to the mother ship.
  12. Gig bags are accidents waiting to happen. Around the house, fine. In a bar? Never.
  13. That's Helix only...can't import external IRs with the POD.
  14. Two pre-amps daisy chained together will always be a noisy mess. They're just not designed to work like that. Get rid of the amp models in the POD if you want to run that way.
  15. Blasphemy! No user serviceable parts inside. "Authorized" access only...;) Well done...mere mortals are capable after all. Look at that.
  16. Which is all well and good until something craps out. Lots of fancy electronics means that something will eventually fail...at that point, without mag pickups, it's a doorstop. As quickly as this tech changes, if you own it long enough, replacement parts will eventually become hard to find. Once a unit is declared EOL, you're SOL. I'll keep my mag pickups, thanks...worst case scenario, I've got a nice Strat clone with a humbucker. Congratulations are in order though...you're the first guy to come in here and gripe about a device actually having too many options. ;)
  17. I sympathize with you, but you might as well be asking the NSA if they'd mind if you dropped by to "look around". Given that L6 refuses to divulge even the most innocuous of details about these things, I will drop dead of shock if anyone "official" volunteers this info. Plus, there's no guarantee that they use the same stuff from one production run to the next, anyway. Places that produce batches of product on an assembly line are generally big fans of the "whatever was cheapest that month" brand of everything from lacquer to toilet paper... On the bright side, if you do choose to refinish it, the odds of you randomly picking the exact same stuff is pretty close to zero...and if that does happen, start buying lotto tickets.
  18. It's not really a worthwhile comparison. They're each a different tool, not designed to do what the other one does....the P22 may have piezos, but it's not a modeler. It might give you some great acoustic tones, but it's not designed to impersonate a LP, Tele, Strat, dobro, or banjo. I've got a jet-ski, and a 12 gauge shotgun. Both useful items, but hardly interchangeable...;)
  19. Which is what you might prefer using if you run into the FX loop on your combo (I'm assuming it has one). No real "need" to model a power amp, cab, and mic if the real McCoys are right there, but through an FRFR rig, a preamp only model probably won't sound very good. The cab/mic sims contribute substancially to your sound. It's a lot to remove from the equation
  20. Every output device, monitors/headphones/cabs/etc will all color the sound to a greater or lesser extent. Headphones can be some of the worst offenders, depending on what you've been using. Most pairs billed as "studio" or "studio monitor" headphones will give you a reasonably flat response, and should at least get you in the ballpark for using the same patches through an FRFR speaker...but you can always expect to have to tweak something at least a little bit. If you've using any kind consumer-level cans, all bets are off...frequency responses are all over the place. No matter what you've got though, there's never gonna be 1:1 continuity. A different speaker(s) is a different speaker.
  21. You'd be breaking strings left and right. ..;) It really is true though...if you bend a lot on 11's, everything else starts to feel like cobwebs after a while.
  22. Well if you decide you want to use the combo for your basic tones and the pod just for FX, there's not much re-working to do. Just add an FX loop to each patch, turn off the amp model, and connect everything with the 4CM. I find the JCM800 and the newer 2204 in the model packs to be plenty "Marshall-y" though...
