Hd500 With Behringer B210d And Xenyx802 Mixer - Tips
edstar1960 replied to edstar1960's topic in POD HD
Hi radatats, The mixer is essential for getting a good level to drive the B210D to a decent volume. Without it, the HD500 just cannot create enough volume through the B210D, even though it is rated as a 200W speaker. But with the mixer, boosting the signal you can drive the B210D to decent levels to compete in a band environment. Plus, the mic preamp of the mixer input channel adds warmth to the tone output from the HD500 which is also needed IMO. -
Could you set up two amp models panned hard left and right? One on path A panned completely left, and one on path B panned completely right - and then set up the volume pedal to be a PAN control, up (minimum) being hard left, and then down (maximum) being hard right. Then you could move from one amp sound to the next just by stepping down on the volume pedal. I haven't tried it but can't see why it would not work. Hope that helps.

I have recently bought some Behring B210D active PA speakers as I wanted a Full Range stereo speaker setup that was affordable and portable. They fitted the bill. However - it has taken me days to tweak settings to get a decent sound from my HD500 through the B210Ds. So, I thought I would share my settings on this forum just in case anyone else has a similar setup in the hope that it may save them many hours of effort trying to get a good sound. The settings below are for home practice level - the bass and treble settings may need to be lowered further when use at rehearsal or gig volume levels. Also I am only using one speaker in this setup and using a mono-configuration just to get the sound right. You can of course use two speakers and configure in stereo if you prefer. And you can use a different mixer and adjust my suggested settings for the mixer accordingly. HD500 settings Global Output set to Studio/Direct Individual patch levels: Mixer levels set near to 0db - maybe +1 to +2db for clean amps and -1 to -2db for overdrive amps and for acoustic maybe as high as +8db Channel/amp volume set plus or minus 5% of it's default setting - try to avoid pushing this up as it can easily lead to internal clipping Master Volume set to MAX The L+R xlr outputs from HD500 are connected via a Y lead to one of the Xenyx 802 mic inputs. (You can choose to use separate leads and use both mic channels on the mixer if you prefer - but remember to have controls on both channels set the same and pan them L and R if you want the stereo separation) Xenyx 802 mic channel settings Trim control set to 9 o'clock to give a little bit of boost and warmth using it's onboard channel pre-amp High EQ (12kHz) control set to 10 o'clock , cutting the high end by an extra few db's. Mid and Low EQ's remain at 12 o'clock Channel volume control at 12 o'clock (0db) Master volume control at 12 o'clock (0db) or 1 o'clock if you like a it more volume at home Master L+R out connected via Y lead to jack to XLR converter and then XLR to B210D input (you can just use jack to jack and choose to only have L or R output, but the I would ensure input channel is panned completely to the side that you choose to ensure you get full signal) B210D settings Master Volume control set at 9 o'clock High EQ set to 7 o'clock (yes - that is almost all the way back to -15db!) Low EQ set to just between 7 and 8 o'clock. (yes - that is almost all the way back to -15db!) RESULTS I have found the above settings have given me decent results at home practice level. Nice acoustic sounds, nice clean amp sounds and nice overdriven sounds. Remember LOW and HIGHS may very well need to be reduced further for rehearsal or gig volume levels as we over compensate these at low volume levels. EDITED 8Nov13 *** NB: The above settings and results were arrived at with the B210D speaker on the floor. When I placed the B210D on a PA speaker stand at head height, these settings were all wrong! I had to readjust as follows (other settings not explicitly mentioned remained the same): HD500 patch settings: I adjusted LOW CUT on amp/speaker DEP's to 50HZ I adjusted THUMP to taste - all patches moved up in value - most back to default 50% - some only to 30 or 40% I adjusted SAG, BIAS and BIAS EXCURSION to taste - many times moving back to default values of 50% Some patches I also adjusted amp bass/mid/treble controls slightly. For my acoustic model patch, I no longer needed the graphic and parametric EQ's that I had used before. Xenyx 802 mic channel: High EQ (12khz) set to 12 o'clock Mid EQ (2.5khz) set to 9 o'clock Low EQ (80hz) set to 12 o'clock B210D: High EQ set to 9 o'clock Low EQ set to 12 o'clock EDITED 8Nov13 *** END *** EDITED 19Nov13 *** START *** NB: OK - update on earlier posts - I have finally discovered what I have been doing wrong thanks to Lorenzo (user id: perapera) and his extremely informative posts on signal routing in the HD500 and differences between balanced and unbalanced outputs. HD500 Connections: JTV59 with VDI to VARIAX input 1/4 inch jack cable from L/MONO output on HD500 to mic channel input on mixer. (This ensures I capture both L+R outputs correctly summed to MONO - NB: DO NOT USE A Y CABLE EXTERNALLY to SUM HD500 L+R outputs - either balanced or unbalanced). HD500 Settings: Global output set to Studio/Direct Set switch for 1/4inch outputs on front of HD500 to LINE (not AMP!!) HD500 Patch Settings: Ensure MIXER outputs are panned as per defaults which is 100% L and 100% R (knobs 3 and 4 on the display) NB: This ensures signal levels are NOT doubled up! Values of 0% (center pan) will double the signal level at this point! Xenyx 802 connections: MASTER "L" out jack to jack input of B210D Xenyx 802 mic channel: Trim control set to 9'oclock High EQ (12khz) set to just past 10 o'clock Mid EQ (2.5khz) set to 11 o'clock Low EQ (80hz) set to 12 o'clock Pan set to full "L" - 7 o'clock Channel Level set to 0 db- 12 o'clock Master Level set to 0 db - 12 o'clock B210D: Level set to 9 o'clock High EQ set to 12 o'clock Low EQ set to 12 o'clock EDITED 19Nov13 *** END *** STILL NOT HAPPY WITH SOUND? Further tweaking may be required on the HD500 patch in the Amp Deep Editing parameters if you find the results overly boomy or harsh sounding even after tweaking the LOW and HIGH EQs a little to taste. (NB: just a little movement in the B210D EQ's settings, eg: +1db, can have quite a dramatic effect on the HD500 sound). I have found many useful tips in this forum and from reading MEAMBOBBO's POD HD guide - and also Sean Halley's excellent Line6 BLOG video on SAG, BIAS and BIAS EXCURSION so many thanks to all of those who have shared their advice on this forum. From that background research, I found that adjusting the following AMP DEP's further refined the sound of the HD500 models through the B210D speaker: SAG: Default 50% but reducing to about 35% for distorted tones "stiffens" response (but harsher sounding) and increasing it makes it more appear more compressed (but softer sounding)- adjust to taste BIAS: Default 50% - but experiment with this to see how it affects the sound - it can make the highs really stand out and soften the honky middle - adjust to taste BIAS EXCURSION: Default 50% - but experiment with this to see how it affects the sounds - it can make the highs really stand out and soften the honky middle - adjust to taste ER: Default is about 12% but reduce this to 0% and add necessary reverb to taste with a reverb effect model. LOW CUT: Default is 20K allowing very low bass through - so increase to taste if you need to remove low end boom RESONANCE LEVEL: Default is 50% but moving up to 55-60% for over driven amps helps smooth out tone, and moving down to 40-45% or lower helps make clean amps sound really crisp THUMP: Default is 50% but if low end is over powering then try lowering 5% at a time to reduce the low end. NB: Lowering this too far can make the amp sound very thin. I found I need this at a reasonable level to maintain the meatiness and warmth of the amp tone. I hope this is helpful, allowing others to get good results quickly and hopefully saving hours of tweaking!

I have a JTV59 and I am still on 1.71 flash and I play with VDI connected to HD500. I have used the banjo model before without any issues but have not needed it for last 8 months or so, but needed it again this weekend. When I used it I noticed a distinct popping sound that seemed to occur at the same time as the initial pick attack. It seemed far more pronounced on the A and D strings and not really noticeable on the B and high E. If I played really gently then I could avoid it but normal play it was there. It wasn't on every pick but it would come and go as I played and was very obvious. I switched everything off and on a few times and it was still there. I have no idea what is causing it. It does not occur with any other model sounds. Has anyone else had the same issue with the banjo model? And if so, did you identify the problem? And did you find a fix? Thanks.
-
No - it's not connected to the PC and HDEDIT when I encounter this problem. It's just JTV59 connected with VDI to HD500 which is connected with L6 Link AES cable to DT25. Yes - I already have an open ticket with L6 Support - they have suggested try another power source for the HD500 and if possible another power supply rather than the supplied one. I am trying to find one so I can test to see if changing the power supply fixes the issue.

Thanks for the update coreyglaze. I have been unable to recreate my original problem but now I get a different issue. When I swap patches - sometimes there is no sound on initial patch change, as if I have muted the output, then press the patch button a second time and the sound returns or it is unmuted. This is intermittent - no idea of when it will happen next. When I last tested trying to recreate the original issue, and was continually swapping patches for about 30 minutes, I got this muted problem about one in every 20 changes approximately.

Dt25 H500 Bright And Vol Boost After Patch Change
edstar1960 replied to edstar1960's topic in DT50 / DT25
Hi SteveGordon, thanks for your post. No - that is not what is happening with me. I literally get no sound - as if I have muted the output - hitting the patch button again seems to unmute or restore the sound. But it is not consistent - it's an intermittent issue, I never know when it will happen. -
Dt25 H500 Bright And Vol Boost After Patch Change
edstar1960 replied to edstar1960's topic in DT50 / DT25
Hi ozbadman, yes I have a support ticket ongoing, but unfortunately not getting very far with it - it has not been updated in days although I have put updates in. The initial response was "it's caused by the flash upgrade as we often re-tweak our sounds - so just re-tweak your settings." - despite the fact that clearly the problem described was not due to the flash upgrade and was intermittent and it came back regardless of whether I had re-tweaked my settings. But now the "no sound" on patch change issue is there and I have put that in the ticket - but no answer so far. Perhaps Ruben40 can also raise a support ticket to ask about the same problem. -
Dt25 H500 Bright And Vol Boost After Patch Change
edstar1960 replied to edstar1960's topic in DT50 / DT25
Thanks for the suggestion anonyrat. I set up my HD500 and DT25 today to recreate the problem and then to see if I could reproduce it using your suggested test. Unbelievably, I could not get it to reproduce the original problem, however, it did decide to give me a new symptom once in a while, which was it simply produced no sound when I changed patch, until I hit the same patch button again. I played for about 30 minutes swapping between patches that had previously shown the original error and about 90% of the time it worked fine - but then once in a while it would not produce any sound. I have had the HD500/DT25 combo do the "no sound" scenario before, but it was very rare - and when it did happen it was more likely to be only when everything had first been switched on, and needed a complete power off, power on process to reinstate. Once or twice it has had the "no sound" in the middle of a band rehearsal, quickly rectified by hitting the patch button again. However, during the 30 minutes I was messing around today, it happened several times - but then again I was swapping patches a lot trying to recreate my original issue. I then tried to recreate this "no sound" issue without using the L6 link, and just plugging directly into the DT25 from the HD500 using standard jack cable. I tried for about 10 minutes but could not get it to go wrong. As the problem is intermittent, this is hardly a conclusive test, but it had happened when connected via the L6 Link within a 10 minute time frame, so I think it is looking more likely it is something to do with the HD500 to DT25 connection via L6 LINK, and it seems to be the DT25 not responding to a control message from the HD500 so it does not reconfigure itself correctly on first request but needs a resend of the message to complete it's setting changes. But as it is intermittent it really is going to be next to impossible for Line6 to reproduce unless they happen to have an HD500/DT25 setup that is already doing it. Frustrated! -
I already posted this in the HD500 forum but did not get much response, so I am reposting here just in case there are some DT25 users on this forum who have experienced same issue. I have a JTV59, and HD500 and a DT25. The HD500 and DT25 are on latest levels of flash and drivers and the JTV is still back on 1.71. I connect the JTV via VDI to HD500 and the HD500 via L6 Link to DT25. Other than sometimes not getting any sound of the DT25, which is cured by switching everything off and then back on, I have not had any issues until now, just after I updated the HD500 to the latest level of drivers for the HD500X support, which I didn't need but I like to keep the software up to the latest levels. Now, when I switch from a patch with an AC15 PRE to a PLEXI LEAD 100 NRM PRE, most times I get a very bright sound, almost like it has switched to the PLEXI LEAD 100 BRT PRE on steroids, and when I press the FS again it returns to the expected warm PLEXI LEAD 100 NRM PRE sound. Sometimes it will work correctly first time, but most times I have to press the FS twice because first push results in this bright sound and apparently louder volume and second push gives me the expected saved patch sound. I thought at first it was something to do with FS8 which is where the PLEXI LEAD patch is assigned, but I tried moving it to FS5 in a different bank, and it still did the super bright sound on first switch when swapping from an AC15 PRE patch, and then a second press resulted in normal sound. I have tried reinstalling the drivers and reinstalling the flash memory, resetting global parameters, and also reloading the SET LIST patches from my PC backup. But the problem remains. I have also reproduced it using the AC30 TB PRE, and have reproduced it going to PHD PRE, JT45 NRM PRE, and BF LUX VIB PRE. Weird. It is almost as if some component on the DT25 has either switched in or forgotten to switch off for the patch change, but on a second request it gets it right. I have raised a support ticket with Line6 but thought I would see if anyone else experienced this or had a similar problem? Thanks.

What have you got programmed in each patch? Are you using just effects or are you using AMP models? If you are using AMP models, are you using a different model for each patch, or the same model for each patch but just with different EQ and volume settings? Also, how have you got the output for the HD500X set up? Are you running direct to PA or a mixer or into a DTxx amp or another amp? Are you using a James Tylver Variax as your guitar input via VDI, or are you just using a standard electric guitar?
-
I also hit the problem swapping to the PHD PRE. Has nobody except me and coreyglaze hit this issue?
-
Update - I have just had the exact same issue when changing from a GIBTONE 185 PRE patch to a BF LUX VIB PRE patch. coreyglaze - what models have you experienced this problem on? Thanks.

OK. tested this morning. Unfortunately turning Variax control to DON'T FORCE MODEL did not fix it for me, and I don't have LOCAL CONTROL option as its set to n/a as its not available for flash 1.71. I tested at low volume on my DT25 combo, basically with MASTER set to just above 8 o'clock as that is the lowest it will go before cutting out and producing no sound. At this low level it appears as if there is also a volume boost with the treble or high mid-range boost, but it may just be that the higher frequencies appear louder at a lower volume, and when I hit the patch button again and the sound returns to normal with the low end coming back in, it appears as if the volume drops, which may well be due to lower frequencies appearing to be lower in volume than they actually are as per Fletcher-Munson effect. My only work abounds at the moment are to either hit the patch button twice before playing to ensure the correct sound comes through rather than the high-end boost, OR to not use the AC models for a clean sound that will be used before swapping to the PLEXI model, which is far from ideal as the AC model sounds fit better for what I do. I hope Line6 can recreate and come up with a fix.

The tuner only works on the signal being routed through input1. If your signal is only going to input2, then the tuner will not register anything. Check the input settings. Ensure you have Input1 looking at whatever input source you are using for your guitar. Hope that clarifies what TheRealZap has already said for you.

Also, not sure I will have the LOCK TONE and VOLUME options with JTV 1.71 flash, but I will experiment and report back.

Hi coreyglaze. Thanks for your comments. I have the DT25 combo. I have raised a support ticket with Line6 and will let you know what they say. It's late here in the UK now so I will try your fix tomorrow to see if it fixes it for me. Only problem though, is that I use my HD500 to swap models on the JTV when I change patch, so if I set it to DON'T FORCE model, then I will have to manually change the JTV model when I change patches which removes one of the main features of the dream rig, and it is a feature I rely on. But it is worth trying to see if whe can isolate the glitch in the code for Line6 to fix. I will update tomorrow on what I find. Thanks again for your help.

Hi - I have the DT25 - and I deal with this issue by ensuring the MASTER volume on the amp is set to just on at about 8 o'clock. Then I audition the presets and for the loud ones I adjust the mixer volumes on the patch to negative values to bring the patch down in line with others that I find bearable. When I have them about right, then I audition the sounds at louder volumes by turning up the amp MASTER volume to a rehearsal level. Hope that helps.

So - has anyone else experienced this or had a similar problem? Thanks.

If you are mainly using it for home use then the DT25 is the one to go for based on size and volume. And when you play out, it is certainly plenty loud enough for small to medium gigs to be heard over the drums and cut through in a 5 piece band - and if you play large venues I guess you would be mic'd up or DI'd - so I reckon it will suffice there too. Just my opinion.
-
Thanks for the clarification Phil. I will experiment some more to see if I can get a usable dual amp patch with a single DT25.
-
Thanks for the reply Phil. I chose the PRE model for path A as the firmware will decide appropriate physical power section on DT25. I chose a FULL model on path B because I thought it will have no effect on what is physically happening on the amp - therefore a full model would be best rather than a mismatched PRE model. But I guess what I really need to know is what the firmware does in such a situation and then I can make an informed choice about what to do. Obviously having two DT25 amps would enable me to have two amp paths correctly modelled and realised on two physical amps, as long as I set up the DT25 routing options correctly on the HD500. It may be that trying to use two paths when you only have one DT25 is best avoided because the system is not designed to handle it but it could be that there is a way to get some usable tone out of it - but for that I need to understand what the firmware tries to do in this situation or whether it just ignores it or if it does something else. It certainly is creating an extra sound but not what I expected. I thought it would ignore the path B model but I was wrong - it does process it but I am not sure what exactly it is doing with it. Can you or anyone else shed some light on the processing in this scenario? Many thanks.

I have an HD500 (output set to COMBO PWR AMP) connected to a DT25 with L6 link. I know that if I create a patch with a single amp model that by default it will get reproduced on the DT25 channel A, and if I choose NO AMP, then by default it will swap to DT25 channel B. If I create a patch with 2 amp models, one on path A and one on path B, then the amp on path A gets reproduced on DT25 channel A, and the amp on path B seems to get blended in to the overall sound, but even if I choose a full amp model with default cab sim on path B, it just does not sound like it should do - it seems to be a poor fizzy version rather than a full rich version that I would expect. Now I know that having only one DT25 amp that the path B amp cannot be realised within the DT25 because it is realising the path A amp, however, I did think that it would take the entire modelled sound of the path B amp plus cab sim and blend with the "real" amp on path A. Is path B creating a true modelled sound but sounding bad because output is set to COMBO PWR AMP instead of STUDIO DIRECT? Or is it bad because a single DT25 isn't designed to handle a patch with two amp models? Or something else? So what is actually happening in this scenario?

I can tell you that I have a DT25 combo and an HD500 and sometimes I connect it all up and get no sound out of the DT25 - so I have to switch the DT25 off and then back on and it springs into life. Sometimes I have had the display on my HD500 go weird when I have plugged in the L6 link but other than that the HD500 is OK. No idea why the DT25 sometimes decides not to produce any sound. I usually switch the power on for the DT25, then connect the L6 link to the HD500 and then power on the HD500. Sometimes I power on the HD500 and then connect the L6 link and then power on the DT25. Sometimes I power on the HD500 and the DT25 and then connect up the L6 link. Most of the time it works fine but a few times I have had the "no sound" problem which has been cured by a power off and power on of the DT25. So you are not alone. Sorry , I can't provide a definitive answer or solution for you.
