This is basically just for connecting the HD500 or multiple DT's. Just revision numbers for the manual I believe. No big differences, use either one if you want.

Good choice, I think you will like it as I do like mine. Some things to note that aren't always obvious from the way they wrote their manuals. It is basically a 2 channel amp. However, you have 4 separate voicing choices for each of the two channels selectable by the topology switch. Here is where it gets confusing. - When using the DT with an HD500 the topology switch changes the negative feedback loop configuration in the power section. - When using the DT as a standalone amp the same switch actually selects between 4 different preprogrammed combinations of amp/cab and reverb model NOT the topology. You can edit these voicings using midi and a 3rd party program called DT Edit on your PC. - When using as a standalone amp you can change the voicings via midi. However, the knob positions are not saved with the voicing so it doesn't really work. Pulling up a Treadplate model with the knob settings for a Blackface can hurt your ears! - So while it does have 8 different possible combinations loaded, really only 2 are usable at any one time. Here's what I recommend you do first. 1. perform a factory reset to eliminate anything the previous owner changed. 2. using midi to your computer (M-Audio Uno works best) and the latest Line 6 Monkey make sure your DT has the latest 2.0 firmware installed. That lets you choose from 30 amp models, 17 cabs, and 12 reverbs for each voicing as well as other nice features. 3. get DT Edit (or the other one for Mac) and while your midi is still hooked up configure each voicing the way you like so you have the 8 amp/cab/reverb combinations you want loaded. DT Edit is also where you can actually change the topology of each loaded model the way you want it too. 4. try loading a clean amp on channel A and a dirty on channel B and you can switch back and forth using a FS on your pedal board. that is true, however in modeling world it doesn't seem to really matter. You can put it before the cab block or after as well, unlike the real world...

You can easily send the signal to both places. You could send the same full amp signal to both, applying a cab sim only to the USB or you could set up a parallel path with a matching preamp model to feed the Laney while sending the full amp to the USB. Lots of options but there are no separate modeled power amp only blocks in Helix.

1. Using the Output block for DT configuration similar to the way the Input block works with Variax is brilliant. That would work fine for me. Force/ Don't Force, pick the amp from a list or manually configure would be perfect. That would also allow the DT settings to be controlled by snapshots! - Q. Would the DT just configure for that patch without affecting the loaded voicings? 2. It has never been addressed or confirmed by Line 6 that the Helix signal over L6 link is applied along with the DT amp/cab modeling unless one specifically turns it off via midi. That seems to be the only reason the knobs work until the modeling is turned off since we know for a fact they aren't controling the Helix parameters. It also sounds MUCH better with them turned off IMHO. - Q. Can you confirm this operation and will this be fixed in any new Helix implementation? (if not, it's hardly worth the effort.) - Q. How would LVM work in this setup? (is it even necessary?) - Q. Any chance of upgrading the transformer tapped signal for feeding the PA?

TBH, don't waste your time or money on IR's until you have exhausted the capabilities of the stock cabs. They have tremendous potential and are far easier to configure with mics, distance, early reflections and the dual cab blocks too. There are so many IR's you can get and its a HUGE rabbit hole to go down, especially if you primarily run to real guitar cabs vice FRFR. There is nothing wrong with running cabs with real guitar speakers, just adds a different flavor to the tone. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. All takes time to play with and really listen to. Personally I never use the preamp models even with my DT25. There is a huge volume swing between them compared to the full amp models and the full amps just seem to capture more of the original amp's character than the preamps.

Not a good idea. Glenn's patches recreate the booteek amps with a combination of Helix amp models, cabs, IRs and FX. If you are using your Preamp 4CM it negates most of his work. However, If you just use his patch to the FX Return of your amp it will work great. Just don't try to use your own preamp on his patches.

first off, if you use the DT standalone without a POD, you will not have any patches to save or effects to use. You can load 8 different amp, cab and reverb combinations, 4 in Channel A and 4 in Channel B. None of those will save ANY of the knob positions and will have to be dialed in again every time you select them. You can have 2 dialed in at any time, oneon Ch A and one on Ch B. Essentially the DT is a 2 channel amp that can choose from 8 loaded configurations. Even if you use midi to change the voicing it will not be dialed in. The tone stack and channel volume settings for a Blackface will rip your face off if you switch to a Treadplate with the same knob positions... That is why you REALLY need the HD500 to control all those parameters for patch changes and to provide effects.

What I want to see with Helix - DT integration over L6 link: 1. DT recognizes Helix connected over L6 and turns off all internal amp and cab modeling. 2. DT power section configures itself correctly for the Helix amp/preamp model. 3. DT physical knobs to control the corresponding settings in Helix would be nice. 4. Updated cab models in DT would be a huge bonus to use with DT transformer tapping. 5. Helix editor section for custom DT power section configurations like HD Edit. 6. Power section reconfigurable in snapshots. The HD500 patches just reconfigured the power section without changing the saved voicings. Helix should do the same. How about a Line 6 app to configure the DT itself? DT Edit is awesome but it is a 3rd party app. Why haven't you released your own? I agree nobody gives a crap about daisy chaining multiple DT's, well maybe 3 people in the world, but not the rest of us users. One working properly would be fantastic.

I can say for sure Glenn's Booteek patches are good. The Friedman is great but the others are stellar too. I am really looking forward to the Bias Distortion Pedal coming out soon. I've been using my DT25 regularly with Helix as you described, L6 link with the DT cleaned out, just the power section. I use full amp models and sometimes cabs or IR's too. I have no issues with the high gain models however, I haven't even tried to see if they match the DT internals. I may give that a shot this week and report back. TBH, I'm not that interested in matching them but I am interested to see what you are talking about. I did trybeing realistic with topologies in the beginning but aftera while I really can't see the benefit. Topo I is as good as the others but III is definitely louder and different. Not necessarily better.

you could do that with the Helix and JTV but its complicated. - You would set up one path with input set to Variax mags for your regular guitar tone. - Make a second path with input set to Variax only for the bass line. You have options for the second path: - Force the Variax low E string tuning down an octave in the Helix Input Block and set up a duplicate path with amps and FX. Might work OK. - Set up a Custom Model in Workbench HD where the only string that is active is the low E tuned down an octave. Add your bass amp/cab to that path and it should be OK.

What willjrock said, just use snapshots. Make your main patch for FOH and set up one snapshot with the amp and cabs off and all the effects adjusted for optimized playing into the front of your amp. You can set up a third snapshot with all the right settings to do 4cm too.

we sometimes wonder why there are no factory reps on the boards and this is why. The guy tells us its not a good idea, be careful and we give him crap because somebody didn't follow his advice 5 years ago. He didn't say your JTV will immediately blow up. WTF?

I haven't compared the two methods. I was originally just trying to make it work with L6 Link. Yours certainly looks workable, I don't know if there is any real difference to the tone. The only thing I can think of is your way eliminates the DT Master volume right? The DT is full blast? With mine the DT Master is usable. And you don't have the option of using the DT reverbs (no biggie). However, remember that no matter what, the Helix will stay in the last configuration you set it by midi. So even if you are sending the audio to the FX Loop the midi is configuring the power section for that Channel voicing and it stays like that when you are done. Your DT does not somehow return to its original condition unless you do a factory reset. That's why I configured mine like I did so the only thing my helix is doing now is selecting the right Channel voice, nothing is being changed by the patch so my DT stays that way when I am done.

I think you misunderstand. Here is my solution for Helix DT with L6 link and a midi cable. Step 1 - choose a Channel and voicing in the DT (or all of them) to use specifically with the Helix. - Use the first 4 midi commands as necessary ONE TIME to select your choice, turn off the amp and cab and optionally turn off the DT reverb. - It will stay this way unless you change it again with midi or do a factory reset. - now you have a dedicated slot in the DT for using with Helix. Step 2 - in your Helix patch use instant commands to select the same Channel/voicing, Class A or AB, Topology I-IV, and optionally Pentode/Triode. - now when you select that patch it will change the DT to the right slot and configure the power section for you. My Preferred Method - I used Step 1 to configure all 8 slots in the DT for use with Helix. I don't use my DT for anything else. - I changed Channel A, I-IV to be Class A, topology I-IV and Channel B, I-IV to be Class AB, topology I-IV. - I set them all to Pentode. (As far as Pentode/Triode, I use Pentode for all models and only use the physical switch to select Triode if I want to play at lower volumes at home. I can't remember for sure but I don't think any of them were Triode in the HD500.) - This was a ONE TIME deal. You don't need to do it again. - now in my Helix patch I ONLY use a midi command to pull up the right slot for the amp model since it is already configured.

you don't even need to go to the IR's. The Supro is great with many of the other stock cabs, even the 4X12's. Very responsive little amp and paired with a DrZ in a dual amp patch sounds fantastic.

using midi with Helix works the same as using DT Edit. The DT will remain in the last configuration you set. Knowing that, I found the best way is to choose a voicing in the DT to always use with your DT and turn off the internal DT amp and cab modeling. Then you can use specific midi commands in your patch to configure the DT the way you want it. However, for me since I don't use the DT for anything else, I turned off all the modeling and cabs in all 8 voicings in the DT and configured channel A to Class A, topo I-IV and Channel B to Class AB, topo I-IV. Now I only need a midi command in the patch to select the right DT voicing and its already configured. Midi CC 122, 0-3, selects Ch A, voicing I-IV Midi CC 122, 4-7, selects Ch B, voicing I-IV Midi CC 12, 0 selects no amp/cab Midi CC 36, 0 or 65 DT reverb On or OFF Midi CC 73, 0 or 65 Class A or Class AB Midi CC 77, 0-3 Topology I-IV Midi CC 75, 0 or 65 Triode or Pentode Remember that the switch on the amp says Topology but really just changes the voicing or preset. The midi command actually changes the topology (negative feedback loop configuration) of the power section. You can use either full amps or preamps in Helix with the DT. Personally, I find the full amp models MUCH better than the preamp models. There is a huge swing in preamp model volumes and the full amp models just seem to capture more of the flavor of the originals. You can use Helix cabs or IRs even with a real guitar cab. Just adds a tone variation that you may or may not want. Totally up to you.

I think Flex I = POD 2.0, Flex II = POD XT, Flex III = POD X3 same as the Vetta. I have a Flex I 2X12 and a Flex II head. I only got them to use with my Helix and they are fabulous for that. Straight in to the FX return in stereo. As far as using them by them selves? Not unless I absolutely had to...

nice job Gary. One of the things I learned from messing with this stuff way too much is the DT will stay in the last state you gave it. Whatever the last config you sent it was, that's where it will be until you send it more signals. Also unless you turn off the DT internal amps and cabs your Helix signal goes right over top of them. So the best way I found to make it work the most consistent and easy way was to go into the DT with DT Edit and set all 8 voicings to no amp or cab. I configured all 4 channel A voicings to Class A, topology I-IV and all 4 Channel B voicings to Class AB, topology I-IV. This lets you just build your tone entirely in the Helix using Helix amps and cabs or IRs. All you have to do is program the midi signal to select Channel A or B, I-IV and the amp is already configured for you. Just use Midi CC 122, 0-7 to select the channel and voice you want for a patch or snapshot. Hope that helps...

the 2.0 update now lets you choose in the Globals how to treat a stereo IR. From the manual page 28: - Go to the Helix app's Preferences to set the preferred behavior for importing Stereo WAV IRs - there you can choose to import the left or right channel data of the file, or a mix of both channels for the Helix (mono) IR. PS - I LOVE these IR's, fantastic job...

Not sure the XLR out of the DT would sound good without cab sim applied. I don't know if having it before the DT would work... interesting.
