What you think of the new Helix MultiFX processor?
spawn2031 replied to bartnettle1's topic in Helix
I know right! I just finished paying off my FRFR setup that my wife awesomely barely put up a fight with. Somehow I think she might fight a little harder against this one which leaves me thinking all day long of ways to scrape the cash together for this. Patience is a virtue? Yeah, seems I have about as much virtue as a priest in a room full of boys... -
So is it safe to assume the way this was designed, you guys planned on us setting up a clean and a distorted chain in the same patch and using a footswitch to turn on / off multiple amps / effects at the same time? effectively switching patches but without ever actually leaving the patch. With the capability of using 4 amps in a single patch could you (in theory) setup two chains with two amps a piece and switch back and forth between them?

Yeah I guess it really matters on how you are using it but if you plan on using it in any kind of capacity live that pause between switching patches is a real killer. There is also the possibility though that with so much DSP and routing possibilities that you could essentially setup 2 sets of amps and cabs in one patch and have one of your stomp buttons turn on/off all the proper amps and cab models so that it mimics switching patches. But if that's the case, I would need to see that thoroughly tested and hammered on before I would feel ok forking out the cash. I personally like to use dual amps for a lot of my patches so for me to do that would require a ton of DSP. -

I certainly want one of these. I can't stop thinking about the damn thing and I think the price point is just fine if it can do all that it says it can. I was seriously thinking about saving up for an AxeFX II but this looks like it is going to accomplish everything that I want without spending 2.5-3k. Still, I plan on waiting till its been out for a bit to see what people say about it after they have been playing with it. I'll be curious about how well it performs in a live situation like is that pause between patch switching gone? I know there are work arounds for the 500x but I really hope they don't expect us to do that with this new beast. -
I'm really surprised no one has asked this one yet as it seemed to be a constant pain for people with the 500(x)s. Is there an audible delay when switching between presets?

Those are the speaker cabs I am using also and yeah, they rock. Really good stuff for the cash.

to us: Fx loop will bypass his amps pre amps and color the sound less giving him more of the true sound of the pod (at least that's the theory). I had mine running into the input of a little fender mustang once and it sounded surprisingly awesome. to op: We do need to know more about what the current problem is. Are you not getting sound? Is it bad sound? What's the skinny?
-
If you spend any time at all in these forums you will realize very quickly that everyone has their own opinion on the best way to run a POD and in all honesty, they are probably all right (well maybe not ALL). With enough tweaking and messing around you can get some great tones from the POD with a variety of different amplification methods... HOWEVER.... In my personal experience, I have to screw around with my tones alot less to get a good sound with them running into my active PA speakers. I chose to run my pod out to a 31 band EQ and then to my speakers to get an extra level of control on the tone that didn't use up POD resources. The POD was designed to run direct into a computer or a PA and, in my experience, it sounds a billion times better running this way.
-
I am very much like you, scouring the forums in search of a tried and true way to use all the settings in your new POD. The truth is, as you are seeing from the above posts that there really isn't a tried and true way. You really have to screw around with everything to find what works for your particular set up. Me personally I use guitars with active EMGs running into my POD which is set for direct (inputs are the same) with a dual amp patch that runs out of my 1/4 in outs to an external EQ then to a pair of Alto TS110a. I have my mixer channels set to hard left and hard right. This works for me great. I have noticed that with this setup I can turn up louder with my tone sounding nice and clean. That's just my experience though.

Well from all of this the OP has definitely proven his point. Being given a choice of how those buttons work would be best. There are obviously enough people on both sides of the fence on this. No one way is really correct but the option would certainly be nice.
-
Yup, It's counter intuitive especially when HD Edit has you scrolling down to increase your bank like everything else. You wouldn't think an option to invert the functionality of those two buttons would be too difficult. I voted for it.
-
Because that's the trend that everything is going these days. Most people expect to move forward in their information by pushing the down button, scroll, click, whatever. Gotta stick with the times. If your interface does not adhere to certain standard design features that has become culture wide then people are going to think it clumsy and not intuitive.
-
Yup, I totally agree with this as well. Easy thing to over come but I felt it was backwards as well when I first got it. I would certainly swap it too if I could.

Guys I had some issues similar to this. Doing a global reset (reboot the unit holding the left arrow) fixed the sync issues for me. Be aware that you will have to re calibrate your expression pedal after you do it though.
-
Not to add fuel to the "L6 you should have done this different" fire but I am surprised they don't make the FW updater automatically do the global reset since it is a mandatory step after flashing. I didn't have the issue you guys are talking about but I had others that the Global Reset fixed. Ahh, but as I say it I realize that if they did that then you'd have tons of people complaining about why their expression pedal no longer works right... damned if you do, damned if you don't.

The 80's? Well yeah that and Tom Morello. Just heard some Rage the other day and almost forgot how nuts his sound can get. Honestly I had never thought of that but it is so true. I have to recently work on teaching myself to fret and pick lighter when playing my electric to get a better tone and speed. It is very possible that might be where I picked up that habit. I play unplugged quite a bit, not really to listen for issues in my playing but more to not disturbed other is in the room. Not an issue I have now thank god.. new house = man cave! I do love a good digital sound as well. It certainly has it's uses and place. Personally I am looking to get that really good non-digital sound as my home base point. Once I have that then I am ALL about adding some crazy stuff in there. I'm a big Tool fan and he is certainly all about some crazy effects.
-
Ok, that was the issue thank god. It had defaulted back to bypass. Crisis avoided!
-
That could very well be it... I just did a global reset on it last week, before I added the 2nd channel on. I'll check that asap.
-
I'll have to check when I get back home but it should be in mute mode. One channel mutes and the other one doesn't. It's always muted before the only thing that has changed is using both channels now.
-
I don't know if this always been this way or if this is related to the tuner issues caused by the last FW updates but... I just noticed last night then when I hit my tuner, both of my 1/4 inch outs are NOT muted. I've just started running this in stereo so it's totally possible that it's always been this way but it is certainly an issue. Is there a setting I am missing by chance?
-
I actually tend to agree with both of ya. It is fun to sit on the couch and pick away because you can definitely hear if you're fretting something wrong and if you producing good clean notes. Same time I love the sound of a great high gain tone roaring out of an amp, even though id certainly covers a ton of sins it's still a blast to hear that and practice that way too. Dunno maybe it's a high gain thing. I can certainly see if I was playing blues or Jazz you really wouldn't need the amp at all to practice.
-
Hey man, never said or insinuated you couldn't play. Just never liked it when guitarists count how good they are by how many other guitarists they show up. And yes digital music is what everything is about now. even those who play only analog, well.. it turns into digital once it's recorded! So I don't think its possible to avoid digital music. I'm not talking about that. I'm simply asking folks for their experiences, tip and tricks on how to avoid the sound getting overly digital and just flat out sounding fake. I will still look up what you suggested though. I remember Herbie Hancock from back in the day when I was young, not to make you feel old or anything! :P
-
I agree that every sound has its place and obviously everyone's take on what is good is different but take a look at the existence of the Custom Tone site and the massive amount of people in the "share you settings" forum looking for a particular artists sound. Most of the requests seem to not be for the digital new age style guitar sounds but more of the classic stuff which has that analog, non digital feel. Personally I do like digital sounding guitars in the right music but that's not what this thread was about. This thread was about how to add enough into your patches without stepping over the line and making it sound too processed and digital. Very good point. A good guitarists with a $200 guitar will sound better on a stage then a crappy guitarist with the best rig in the world. I'm glad that you feel you have blown that many guys off of the stage, kudos... I guess. I bet those guys with the Axe effects still thought they were pretty good though. Personally, I play better when I am really into my tone. It inspires me because I love the sound of it. Kind of like going out for a night on the town KNOWING that I look good vs. looking like a chode. It certainly effects how I personally play. Either way though, you sir, have missed the point here. The POD can be truly daunting and I was hoping to get all of you guys to post pointers for newbs and semi-newbs to help them (and me) out with the difficult task of creating a quality sound without it sounding too digital (unless they wanted it to be). So very true there. It's all about the fingers and ability as well. I remember being a young guitarist and hating my gear thinking it sounded like crap and my lead guitarist at the time decided to give it a whack and .. well, yeah he certainly showed me what it could really sound like. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************ So, so far reading through this topic, the only pointers I am really seeing to stay away from a too digital sound is to not overload it with too many effects. But what if you need that many effects in a particular patch or it's popping up without too many effects in it? Is there no way that anyone has found to counter this sound at all besides the less is more approach?
