POD HD is a standard stack amp

I launched this topic in order to discuss the standard guitarist way, i mean POD HD -> Power amp -> Cab

 

 

My background is when i begun with pod it was through a power amp (Rocktron velocity 300) and various cab in rehearsal studio.

 

Then i've tried and switch to FRFR but unfortunatly my choosen solution wasn't statisfying despite the convinience

 

 

Now i've switch back to Power amp solution and cab and feel like with the knowledge i've now tweaking patch this can work. I've used few days ago this satck setup and with rocktron set to flat (Reactance 5 and definition 5) the result with an Hiwatt model amp + Hiwatt cab and SM57 off axis was really good.

 

 

Even setting pod in studio direct , with cab/mic with emulation the overall realism and presence of my sound through a guitar cab was pretty natural and pleasant (that word i've forgot for sometimes with the pod learning phase :) )

 

For those who read my previous post, even my mate guitarist was forced to lower volume against rocktron velocity loudness, i've let him set his amp ridiculously loud at the beginning of session, he kept telling me put you louder, then i've put my ear protector and  i've done, and in Rocktron PA completly blow the room :D.  Even bassist was behind my wall of sound hihi, i feel like volume war in my band is over :) and we'll start really working on our overall tone.

 

 

My last question is which physical cab to use for a good and present live sounding.

I ran studio/direct mode into a power amp and cabinet for a year or so before going FRFR. It might be the "wrong" way to do it, but it worked for me. Other output modes sounded dreadful to me.

 

As far as what cabinet to use...that's entirely subjective. They're all gonna sound a little different. No way around that.

The DT amps sound better to me using studio/direct.

The same configuration with my mustang 3 v2 without modelling. But I also mix pod's full amp no cab with mustang's cab.

I ran studio/direct with full amp models and cabs (usually the Tread cab and 57on) when I used a poweramp and cab for almost a year.

 

For a poweramp I used either a Carvin MTS3200 guitar head or a Carvin DCM1000 poweramp, and went through a Carvin 4x12 with Gt12-75s

If you can try some different speakers too. I found I liked the cabs with GT75s over the V30s going studio direct.

 

Currently Tech21 PE60 but I have used the old trusty Rocktron Velocity 120 which sounded great with a 2x12 closed cab (I think it had Peavey Black Widows in it).

I've found that some guitar cab are way too much oriented to provide a decent tone

 

for instance i've played on a EVH 212 and this was not really nice

I think no one configuration will be optimal for everyone, because everyone is subjectively looking for something in their sound that suits them.

 

After 4 months I can honestly say I'm consistently achieving the sounds I was hoping for when I made this commitment to a POD->FRFR rig.  I really feel that for the first time I can get exactly the sound I want in a predictable way regardless of the style of music I'm playing, at a very manageable volume, and consistent both with what the audience hears and what the band hears on stage.  Those are the "must have's" for me in any guitar rig.

 

The "nice to have" which has been my target for a long time for the band is to have a "studio quality" live sound that can be consistently duplicated in any environment.  My guitar rig has been a MAJOR step forward in that regard.  I'm not sure I could have achieved this with anything short of a FRFR setup because of the range and precision of the speaker response.  I'll never know because I see no reason to change anything at this point.

Probably not. In 25 years of trying, some days it was great, some days....well let's just say "less than inspiring", lol. Love my current set-up.

I haven't posted in a bit about my efforts with the 500X,not much point with my temporary(i hope)hearing issue,but i'm stilling reading pretty much every thread on the HD section.

I learn something all the time & the BIG thing i've learned in this thread is I can select NO CAB,it's so obvious when it's pointed out,but i had missed it,it could make quite a difference,while i'm still useing my Combo Amp,thanks Aerosol :)

Something that I figured out years ago that worked great for me with the Flextone III XL is working even better with what I use now with the HD Desktop. A Flextone III was basically an XT modeler with fewer models. However, what I came to realize is that with the amp (212 open back) alone I could never get the cab models to sound right. Rendering a 412 closed cab model  on an open back combo just does not cut it as it totally muds out because of the physics of the speaker cab. So I modified it a little because they can't really run loads under 8 ohms safely and added a 212 closed cab....That alone made those closed back cab models translate much much better...

 

Jump forward to now, and I use an HD Desktop/shortboard into the power amps of a DT50 112 sitting on a closed back 212 that is run by a DT25 head...99% of my patches are single amp model patches. I run in combo power amp mode and have patches that use the PRE models for that setup. I have the same patches using FULL amps on a different setlist for running direct FRFR. HD and Helix are the best FRFR modelers Line 6 has done, but I much prefer having tube power amps and guitar cabs than FRFR. Not a knock, just a personal preference. I don't use the TOPO switching as I prefer a fixed simul-class vibe. I run the DT50 Class A Pentode and the DT25 is running Class AB Pentode...DT50 FX Return level allows me to match the volume of the DT25 as it does not have this and use the Desktop master for level control...The direct outs on the DTs sound great...but if the sound guy wants to mic it, that works too...

 

The other tube rig I use for the desktop now is two Spider Valve 112 combos, each sitting on a 212 closed cab. That rig is freaking loud...Destroys the DT rig...not even close...

 

Still use the Flextone III XL in the rehearsal place...I can leave it there and it does a fine for that...but it does not have the feel the tube power amps have...

 

The DT50 is not using a stock speaker. It is loaded with a Jenson Jet Tornado and the 212 is loaded with two Madison Minstrels that were a pretty decent 300 watt speaker that has some EV12L vibe to it...probably going to put Jets in there one day...So much lighter...and they seem to sound a little better in some repects I think...I probably obsess more over pickups and speakers than any other component in my rigs...

Nice bunch of information i've looked Jensen tornado response it seems pretty "neutral"  or not too much tainted, i'll have a look on others common speakers

 

 

From my side, i've bought today a cheap and old Peavy classic 50/50 for a really cool price, it definetly adds a warmth to pod sound !!!
