  1. Anyone got any good settings suited to a strat to do funk-soul material? Think along the lines in the style of the james brown band!!!!
  2. Correct.I play in a covers band varying from ACDC to ZZtop so I have different sound banks in the 16 user banks for specific songs that we play but all my sound banks started of from the first preset I filed to my amp.Its just all based from that 1 sound patch. Play around with the amp and it will come together. It just takes time to get all your patches together but my advice is to create that one rythmn patch, the sound you are going to mainly use,and then any other patch you create will initially be that patch with more vol/less vol, reverb, phaser, etc etc. When you get your patch created and eg:save patch to channel 1a,simply hold down channel A until all abc and d lights flash, press b and you have simply copy/paste channel a to channel b.From that point you can add your vols or fx to channel b and then hold down channel b until all channels flash, press channel b again and that's it saved.easy. In the future I hope to post some of my patches to customtone.I do have 1 patch there if you want a real killer Jake E Lee of Ozzy Osbourne tone.
  3. I gig and this is how I use mine...... I started and set up my basic rythmn patch.I did the EQ first on clean(bass, mid, treble) then I saved this by holding down channel A and saved to user bank 1a. Then I added the distortion I required to channel 1A along with the drive level.I overwrote the original channel 1A and saved, this got me my rythmn patch. I like a good rock sound on rythmn so my eq is....bass set at around 1 oclock, mids around 11 oclock, treble around 3 oclock, drive around 1 oclock and using the red metal distortion.Basically that's my rythmn guitar patch there although I have added a little of thr red comp on FX1.Channel vol saved to around 12 oclock position. The b patch,I copied the channel A patch to channel b.This now is going to be my lead guitar patch so all I did was increase the channel volume to around the 2 oclock position and saved it to channel B.Reason for this is when it comes to the solo in a song, the volume increase gives the extra boost to cut through the sound so the solo can be heard clearly.Channel C,Same as channel B but I added delay FX and channel d I have a clean sound with a little delay to take the dryness out of it.hope this helps These amps take a bit of getting used to but just tinker around with it and you will get it. To add the fx,push the edit button, scroll through the fx and to save desired fx just hold down the desired channel switch (A,B,C or D)until all 4 flash and then push the desired channel switch again and that's the preset saved
  4. Heres my worth.I played lots in the 90s,had a total guitar cessation until 2011 then started again and got the spider4-75 which im still using and gigging with. I have the FBV express pedal and its fun having the wah pedal on board. The most home enjoyment I get is downloading backing tracks from the pc and using the mp3 input on the spider to play along with the tracks.Had lots of fun adding extra colour to these. I would advise a fbv pedal to get most amp potential but think I would try for a used one from ebay as new ones are pricey.
  5. I find the presets on the line 6 can be tinny and thin. Id suggest, take a preset and tweak the eq on it(bass, mid, treble) and save that. I noirmally go for bass around 1 oclock, mids around 11 oclock and treble around 3 oclock on the eq Drive set around 2 oclock and the red metal setting
  6. Did you swap your guitar lead for another lead and try that?
  7. personally these don't require an external pedal like a boss pedal, the built in distortions are well up to the job.
  8. sounds like a fault in the amp to me.Could need a repair done.
  9. I have a 75 and a 150 head,no vol issues at all. For rythmn work,my channel vols are all set at the 12 oclock position For lead patches,i set them at 2 oclock channel volume. On the 75,master volume at 12 oclock and on the 150 its at 9 oclock. Give it a try. But I think I understand what the original poster is saying. They are getting max master out put at around the 10 pm position with the master vol.shouldnt be the case at all
  10. do you use the fbv shortboard? perhaps try the volume without the shortboard plugged in ,maybe its developed a fault and causing vol issues?
  11. Yeah,i have used the crazy train preset .Most of the time I make my own patches or start with a preset and tweak it. Im using a aria pro 2 madaxe, its a strat type guitar so as you would expect from strats, its a bright guitar but a little tweaking always helps.Add a little bottom end and pull the mids back a little for that metal sound :)
  12. Guess I shall just have to clone an Iommi sound and get it up on customtone at some point :) I do have 1 on custometone based on guitarist Jake E Lee of ex Ozzy Osbourne, very 80s metal indeed .
  13. I think my problem is that a lot of the artists presets in the spider 4 are not familiar to me as I am not that knowlegable of modern rock genres. If they had firmware update full off 60s,70s,and 80s presets only, that would be more my thing. I can,t believe they never put a Tony Iommi preset on the amp!The master of metal does,nt even get his own preset...tut tut!
  14. Another idea, set up 4 patches on the one bank all identical but each one with a different delay tempo rate? just change patch when required
  15. Fully agree. I set my channel vol for all patches at 12 oclock and then set my master For a solo patch,i save the same patch as my rythmn but set the channel vol on the solo patch at 2 oclock so it has a little boost to cut over the rythmn guitar
  16. Right,I looked at the link with the full artist list and the list is all abbreviated. I think they need to be more specific with artist and song that tone is used on. Having problems with abbreviations
  17. yes,my buddy hooked his up with just one lead and guess what...the amp blew up and had to be repaired
  18. is that not just a fusible link dude inside the amp that blows when a problem occurs?
  19. I have the 75 watt spider.I would definetley start with metal red setting. Also need help on this front to as I need to create a setting for "The cult-she sells sanctuary" but I will take a look at the question next time I have my amp out to see what I come up with.
  20. Im not sure about music literacy as Im a self taught player and unable to read any form of transcript but....the tap mode will determine how long the delay lasts after you strike the note.the faster the tap rate, the quicker the delay will die on that sound patch.A slow tap rate, the longer the delay will continue
  21. yes, there is a setup procedure to re format the vol on the pedal.Dont know where on the site the info is but I have lowered amp vol via the pedal on the 150 that I use. I also have the 75 too and yes,its also to loud for a player in your situation.I have never had my 75 above half on the master volume in a gig situation. I would save any presets you use to the 16 user banks and save each preset at 12 oclock on channel volume and then alter the global master volume and if its still too much, back them off again and save them at 9 oclock on channel volume.
  22. are you new to spider amps? man,it took me a while to figure them out. you need to use the edit button, push it and that takes you through to the parameters for adjustments. When you have the required sound, hold on the channel you wish to place that sound patch on.hold down desired channel button and all 4 should flash then push the channel button again to complete and save the sound .hope this helps
  23. I have been dabbling around lately,trying...and I stress the word trying....to achieve a lead sound like this http://youtu.be/q9u29BGS0QY Listen to the intro solo to this song, around 20 seconds into it.That is the tone I am trying to get. Has anyone any good ideas on FX to use to get this tone or does anyone have a similar tone they may care to share via customtone? Frankly...I am not having much luck...yet but will persist with it. This is one for the 80s metalheads
  24. I got a new pc running windows 8 but can,t seem to find a spider edit and monkey programme that supports win 8?
  25. IF...there is to be a spider 5...my biggest gripe with the spider 4 is that i dont find it very user friendly. I have had mine 18 months and know my way around the settings now but it has taken me that long to get into the comfort zone with the controls.if it was made more user friendly,it would be a hit for sure but...its still a freakin good amp in spider 4 guise.i prefer to create my own sound patches though rather than use the presets
