The inability to map a HD Patch change to any patch change is what originally was brought up. The controversy is whether "FULLY assignable" is an accurate description. I don't believe it is since without this ability the word FULLY is inaccurate. It is only "partially" or more accurately "ALMOST fully" assignable. Given the description, the original poster wanted to make sure that he wasn't missing something since the way he read (and the way I read) the "fully assignable" would be there are no limits and clearly there is one. No big deal. No egos hurt. Not upset in anyway. Mostly a disagreement with the accuracy of the terms.

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere and I just discovered it so I'll mention it now. If you want a bit more info about your FX, download the M13/M9/M5 FX Parameters at http://line6.com/support/manuals/m13

It is what it is but isn't as described. A FULLY assignable MIDI controller i.e controls other devices as well which, to my understanding, is what was being talked about and it doesn't FULLY do. The description is not about what it can be controlled by.
-
Your definition is correct, however it is described as a FULLY assignable MIDI controller which would indicate both the internal MIDI and any external MIDI devices. Since it only does this internally then it is only a PARTIALLY assignable MIDI controller. It IS a FULLY assignable INTERNAL MIDI controller. Just in the interest of being accurate. ;)

Well this is a big relief. Given the Spank 2-4 resolution and the "some JTV's don't accept the upgrade very well", I'm set. Love the 2-4 positions when the virtual pickups are working right A big thumbs up to this upgrade. Looking forward to being able to adjust my JTV through my HD500 along with the "spank" bug fix.

I hear and understand (and mostly agree) with all the complaints but don't give up yet. Overall I like the update. It seems to react better with the amps in my HD500. Despite my misgivings in regard to the update ( listening to them with no amp or FX) my patches overall, seem to sound better. And freman came up with some excellent solutions to the complaints. I think that even though the factory model complaints are somewhat legit. freman showed that the sounds are in there somewhere using Workbench. So overall, I give this update a thumbs up. I was particularly disappointed with the position 2 spank now not sounding at all like the Knopfler sound it used to have.

There is a way of tuning it out psychologically. You still have to have a certain volume but for some reason I'm able to "tune" out those strings. The best way to describe it would be you have to ignore them and focus on the notes coming out of the speaker. I know that's a very simplistic way of putting it but I don't know how else to describe it nor how to attain it. I just wanted you to know I did. And believe me, if I can do something, snyone can. It's like if you're really engrossed in a movie and someone talks to you and you just don't hear them.

Rick 12, Still Lacking Realism?
brue58ski replied to McLenison's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
So, as was stated before, you need to fireup your Workbench and detune those strings a little more which can be done on a string by string level in Workbench. Let us know if that helps. I always thought the electric 12 strings were a little lacking but I don't have one or access to one so I have no way of comparing. You're input would be greatly appreciated if you found a way to improve them. -
As Iknowathingortwo stated. The fact that the Master Volume is tied to both the 1/4" and XLR ouputs and you aren't able to "disconnect" one is, to me, a glaring omission that proves the opposite of what you've stated. Having a steady signal to the PA and a variable signal to your on stage amp is a very basic Live option. If it's true that any updates will not include any of the recording options of the X3 and/or the aforementioned Master Volume option, I think they just wanted to get their HD stuff out and were pretty much set on a $499 street price for the 500. Curious how much more an HD500 with all the output opitions of the X3 would have cost if all the other conjectures are true.

How do you get rid of a guitar player? Put a sheet of music in front of him. What's the difference between a pizza and a guitar player? A pizza can feed a family of four. How do you make a million dollars playing folk guitar. First ya start out with two million... How do you get a guitar player off your porch? Pay for the pizza. What do you call a male guitar player with no girlfriend? Homeless. What do you call a guitar player in a suit. The defendant. How long does it take to tune a 12 string guitar? Nobody knows.

That hurt's. Especially the separate 1/4" XLR outs.
-
I was, of course, joking as well. I am curious, has Line 6 officially said there will be at least one more update? I've been a Line 6 boy for awhile and the HD500 doesn't have all the input output recording capabilities as the X3 Live and I expect eventually it will. So I am expecting one but I don't think anything official (or even a reliable rumor) has been said.

So the only people on thius forum that buy this, can't play guitar? Hmmmmmmmmmm. ;)
-
No. What he's talking about bypasses the preamp and only uses the solid state power amp. It works. Use the direct output mode.

Vdi Cable Vs Real Guitar Cable
brue58ski replied to Ruttster's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
So I take this to mean you first plugged in using the 1/4" jack. Got your sound, and then used the VDI cable. Did you remember to switch from your magnetic pickups to your modeled guitars? As I recall the VDI on the XT's defaults to the magnetic pickups when you first plugin so you have to press the model knob to switch from the magnetic pickups to the models. -
One key to developing live patches is no reverb. Generally the room's reverb is enough (unless you're meeting in a movie theater which we currently are. Completely dead). Just delay. The exception, of course, would be where reverb is more of an effect for those really ambient tones.

Save In Workbench -help
brue58ski replied to guilhordas's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Since you didn't describe how you saved, I can't tell what if anything you did wrong. However, the main thing is that you are "Sending" the patch so you need to click the "Send" button. The other main thing is to "Sync" the guitar before you shut down the program. When you do that it's going to ask you what patches you want to sync and select from there. It's been over a year since I've used it so I could be a bit off. I hope this helps a little. -

New Competitor: Gibson's Lpx
brue58ski replied to LarryLion's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Well I guess the bottom line is get what you want. I am incredibly happy with my Variax. I've compared it to as many of the real things that I can find and have been very impressed (as have the owners of those guitars) What ever differences there are I can attribute to not every guitar being exactly the same (all of the guitars I used for comparison were fairly new, no "vintage" guitars.) The Variax works great for me and the Gibson isn't as flexible and costs too much for what you get in my opinion. -
New Competitor: Gibson's Lpx
brue58ski replied to LarryLion's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Gafffaflabbaflllsteranndkksl!!! Huh?!?! What?!?! I know they semi announced a JTV upgrade and then pulled back on it but I didn't know they were HD Variax models. I'm assuming that means they are redoing the models from the ground up like they did the amps. Is that true? -
Yes you can. Make sure both sides A & B are getting a signal and A is panned left and B panned right. You can then use the A & B volumes for the left and right levels respectively. Be very careful of your levels though. It'll be easy to get one too hot or too low relative to the other i.e. good for the amp but too hot or low for the PA and visa versa.

I loved the mic preamps in the X3 and got many of my best Variax acoustic tones using them with the Variax. I've had some luck (using a Variax) using the preamps only of the amps. It might be one place to start.
