  1. You're far from alone. I've tried hundreds to date...and exactly one (slightly tweaked) gets used. Every once in a while I throw caution to the wind, download a bunch, and then I remember why it's a waste of time. The payoff is never worth it. Customtone (like Communism ;)) is a nice idea, spoiled by the lowest common denominator. Walk into any big box MegaloMusic on a Saturday morning, sachet over to the guitar department, and give ear to the cringe inducing screeches emanating from within...this demographic out-numbers the musicians of the world 10:1, and that's probably a forgiving ratio. Thus we can safely assume that Customtone will be filled (mostly) with submissions from this very same group. And even in those rare cases where something is submitted by someone with genuine skill and knowledge of the gear, there are the other thousand variables in the equation that will nearly always guarantee that the tone you hear will not be the same thing that it's creator heard. The guitar, pickups, amp, monitors, headphones...whatever was used to create the patch...are all things you likely don't have. That being the case, expecting it to sound the same is an appeal to magic. Wasting time on the free ones is bad enough, paying money for them baffles me.
  2. Try other mics and cabs too...personally, I don't much care for either of the 57's. They're both a little shrill for my taste. I gravitate towards the XXL 4x12 a lot, with the 421 mic. Tames a lot of the high end, but can be boomy if you don't deal with the bass, which is often @ 10% or less, depending on the amp model. Usually have a low cut filter on the cab too, anywhere from 100-120 Hz.
  3. Well most of the amp models in the POD tend to be bass heavy...cranking the low end usually results in muddiness. What output mode are you using? Full models, or preamp only? Cab and mic choice make a tremendous difference, too. And most importantly, at what volume did you dial in the tones initially, and what were you monitoring through? If you're listening at comfy living room volume when you create your patches, the same tones will be a guaranteed disaster at stage volume. Same goes for tweaking through a "real" amp and cabinet...those tones will not translate well to a FRFR monitors or PA speakers.
  4. Well if it sounded like crap, then probably not so much...was he using full models or pre-amp only? Which cab and mic models, mic placement, etc? Could be any one of a thousand things... Fiddling with ANY modeler for an hour or two is not likely to be sufficient time to know if it's gonna work for you...there's a big learning curve with these things. And starting out with what someone else has decided "sounds good", is probably the worst way to get acquainted with a unit. Buy one from someplace with a liberal return policy, and lock yourself in a room with it for a week or two. If you come out and it still sounds like crap to you, then modeling isn't your cup of tea...and that's OK, too. It ain't for everybody.
  5. How dare you inject logic into an emotional conversation?!?!? This is "besmirching vs. righteous indignation" ..."Detached and thoroughly lucid assessment" is down the hall. ;)
  6. Indeed... But when you really think about it, the only time most guys ever wear a tux, they're signing their life away...why shouldn't they be comfy? ;)
  7. When the time comes, we can call it a "heulogy"...and anything else that gets EOL'ed from this point on, as having been "eulixed" ;)
  8. Um...not to put too fine a point on it, but you are aware that you work for a company that devotes enormous resources to getting cutting edge technology to sound EXACTLY like a bunch of old sh*t that's been around for decades, right? Why bother if it's all insignificant? ;) Significance is in the eye/ear of the beholder...are Mozart and Beethoven "insignificant" now because symphony orchestras still have "the same old instruments" that they've always had? Hardly fair... Regardless, if we're gonna define "Dad music" as "guitars that still sound like guitars", then fine. I'll go to my grave playing Dad music...because if the only way to achieve "significance" is through the application of so much artificial processing that the end result is a collection of whistles, beeps, and clangs that would give R2D2 a seizure disorder, and couldn't even be identified as a guitar without a visual cue, then I'd rather play nothing at all. ;)
  9. IR = Impulse Response This explains it far better than I can: http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/The_Working_Guitarist_All_About_Impulse_Responses
  10. The weight issue is one thing, but having more power than you need is better than having just enough to scrape by. I've had amps that could just barely cut it. Not fun....there's no such thing as too much headroom.
  11. Well I've never used the QSC, but what I do know is that each and every time you pump your tones through a different box, the tone is gonna change. Sometimes it's a subtle difference, and sometimes you might be forced to wonder if your guitar was replaced by a bassoon while you weren't looking. Bottom line is, expect to do some tweaking...doesn't mean that you won't get it sounding just as good, but it won't sound identical without some work.
  12. Roughly translated: "Well that guy was across the pond when he made that video 5 years ago, and we don't have a facility there anymore anyway, so therfore it was OK for him to run both outputs back then." Huh? Who cares how old the video is? Wouldn't make any difference if they had unearthed it in that parking lot where they found King Richard III. It's either OK to run the damn thing that way or it isn't. Or are we to surmise that older JTV's are somehow immune to this circuit overloading problem? If you want plausible deniability, the story actually has to make sense...
  13. Something new to whine about! YAAAAAAAAAY!!!😤 The question that really should be on everyone's mind is how's the tuner in that thing? Sufficiently "granular" to pass for a bowl of Grape Nuts? ;)
  14. Yes, I know...I've seen your custom stuff. But after that rather involved wish list, to have the JTV's followed by the STD Had to be a bit of a let-down. Just funny is all...
  15. Lmao! Official "oopsies" are one of my favorite things in the world. Secret sauce. Move along, there's nothing to see here...Do as I say, not as I do. 😅
  16. And without sewage treatment plants, we'd all be showering in $hite...but I don't want to work there either. ;)
  17. My only point was that 80dB is not particularly loud, and in all likelihood woefully inadequate to assess what you'll sound like at actual stage volume, which is likely to be a whole lot louder than 80dB....and for what it's worth, I've never been one to rely on the "sound guy" at the local gin mill for much more than "outlets are over there, here's your mic cable".
  18. 6 of one, half dozen of the other. Either way, there's a box sitting on your cabinet, and something else on the floor. At least the floor unit saves you a few bucks...
  19. Just wait till the "hypersonic trans-orbital felchifier" is released. It's got two discrete Fetzer valves. Only bats can hear it. Awesome...;)
  20. And you got a Pacifica, lol. Well I suppose an impressive wish list requires an equally impressive buzz kill. The universe likes equilibrium...;)
  21. Here's the thing: nobody's doing anything "wrong". Nobody's "right" either. You just like what you like. I, for instance, really don't want lima beans and tap water filtered through a sweat sock for lunch...not even if it was free. But if that's your thing, knock yourself out...;)
  22. A job I'm glad I don't have, then. And I still want my avocado pedal...;)
  23. Fair enough...never used any of the Roland stuff. Why bother with piezos then? Seems this would have fewer issues with relative outputs, etc...
