Alternate Tuning Not Working

I would. They're great when they work, but if not it's an albatross. -
Alternate Tuning Not Working
cruisinon2 replied to starmanbc's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Tuning knob shouldn't be blue. I'd try re-flashing the firmware. Sometimes that fixes this sort of thing. These guitars have a lot of quirks. -
If it's a mechanical set-up issue, then why is it ALWAYS just the 6th string? Is it just the world's biggest coincidence? The fact that the plink can be moved around to other strings by simply swapping piezo connections has never been adequately explained, either. A mechanical vibration issue has to have a physical point of origin, yet it's possible to inflict this horrible noise on other strings just by moving wires around. Makes no sense.

The L2T gets me all the sounds I need, acoustic and electric. Doesn't hurt that it's the smallest rig I've ever had, either. I'm too old to drag around a 4x12 and a rack-mount power amp.

Post of The Week! And it's only Wednesday....lmfao! ;)

You can't count that...singers get pissy if the sun moves behind a cloud without their consent. ;)

Sure there is...then again, every rig I've ever had has suffered from this to some degree. Cost of doing business when you're playing live. The kind of smooth transitions between multiple tones that one can create in a recorded mix are nearly impossible to reproduce live without putting 6 guitarists onstage, and an octopus at the mixing board. But expression pedals and spillover have made it a hell of a lot closer than I ever thought I'd get...

This issue is definitely not specific to the 89F. All the models have demonstrated the same problem, and they're all running essentially the same firmware. "Official" explanations usually blame something mechanical like fret buzz, etc...which may contribute to the problem, but having heard a bunch of sound clips where the plink is utterly atrocious on the 6th string, yet completely absent anywhere else, I find it difficult to accept fret buzz as the root cause. I've been setting up guitars for 25 years. If a guitar is set-up so badly, with the 6th string buzzing to such an extent as to cause the sounds I've heard, then there's no way on earth that the same guitar would not have similar fret buzz on other strings...it would be almost impossible. Yet the problem exists only on the low E, so there's something else going on. What, I have no idea. And I seriously doubt anyone else does either, or it would have been rectified by now. People have been bitching about it for years. Some guitars do it, some don't. If yours is new, ditch it and save yourself the grief. I got lucky...mine works.

I find these demands for "visibility" amusing. Just because so much info is only a Google search away now, doesn't mean that we're all entitled to intimate knowledge of the inner workings of every company on earth. Does Maytag call a town meeting if their new FilthBlaster 2000 is delayed for a month because too many units are having trouble with the spin cycle? It'll ship when it ships....no amount of special pleading will change that.

I've never bothered to investigate it specifically, but I suppose it depends on where you expect the damage/loss to occur. If you're only concerned with having it disappear from or be damaged at home, your homeowner's insurance may or may not already cover it. Apparently this company exists: https://www.musicproinsurance.com/ Learn something new every day...

There's not a whole lot you can do then, unless you want to experiment with some of the amp models, and only use the head for power.
-
I get around it by using a lot of dual-amp patches. Pairing either clean and dirty rhythm tones (with a boost assigned to a FS in the dirty amp path if I need it for leads), or a dirty rhythm and a lead tone. Then assign the channel volume of each amp to the expression pedal (ie heel down for clean, toe down for dirty), and you can transition smoothly from one sound to the other without changing patches.

Any minute now...or not. Depends on which way the wind is blowing. And whether or not you like meatballs. Clear enough? ;) Just ask everybody who's still waiting for the floor unit...

JTV 59 string guages
cruisinon2 replied to Allan66's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Not necessarily. I've got a 7-string with 11-58 strings on it...just a matter of getting used to it. -
Seems this thread is destined to remain homeless until a Firehawk 1500 forum arrives...so I say anything goes. I'd like to open up the floor to a discussion on interior design. Edwardian or Santa Fe? What say ye? ;)

I've been playing various preamp/multi-fx units and modelers for years. Never had one that didn't require balancing volumes between patches. Different EQs and FX, even without switching amp models is enough to throw volumes off from one patch to another. Balance them, and be done with it. I don't get why there's such a fuss over it...it's really not much of an ordeal.

JTV 59 string guages
cruisinon2 replied to Allan66's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Nope...longevity has more to do with how much you tend to perspire when you play, whether or not you wipe the strings down at the end of each session, and to some extent, the relative humidity where the guitar is stored. Strings will eventually corrode just sitting there, even if they're never played. Though as Charlie said, the heavier gauges tend to break less. I hardly ever break strings anymore. Couldn't tell you how long it's been. Elixir Nanoweb coated strings last considerably longer than anything else I've ever tried...a normal set of strings will last me a week, maybe 10 days if I'm lucky. I can get 5 or 6 weeks from the Nanowebs...well worth the extra few bucks per set. -
HD500X Amp Model Tones/EQ(first plug in with the Band.)
cruisinon2 replied to Old-Rocker's topic in POD HD
Your amp's preamp is either in the signal chain, or it isn't. You can't use a "minimal" amount...it's either there (with the typical drive, bass, mids, treble tone-stack), or its not. If you're not plugging into an FX return, then you are running straight into the preamp, which will color everything the POD does. Is it impossible to run this way? No...but it tends to be a royal pain in the arse. At the outset, the 500X is hard enough to wrap your head around, without extra speed bumps. A decent FRFR powered speaker will make life a whole lot simpler...and better sounding. ;) -

Transitioning to a heavier gauge is just like weight training. Simply a matter of getting used to the increased tension. Don't over do it right out of the gate, or you might hurt yourself, but your hands will get stronger. After a while, you'll wonder how you ever played on the lighter gauge. I've been playing 11's for at least the last 15 years, with plenty of bending. 10's I can still play on if I had to, but 9's feel like cobwebs at this point. Tonal differences are subjective of course, but I find that the heavier gauges definitely provide greater tuning stability, and a bit more sustain. -
Variax And Wireless

Well perhaps if you cut and paste the same post into just a few more threads... -
Of course you can continue to use stuff. That won't stop the next shiny new toy from coming, however...and there will always be those folks who cannot resist the allure of the next "big thing". The new gadget, whatever it is, will always upstage the current units somehow, with some feature or function that you're current one doesn't have. And they'll keep coming faster and faster as the years go by. NAMM wouldn't bother having a show twice a year if this weren't the case.

HD500X Amp Model Tones/EQ(first plug in with the Band.)
cruisinon2 replied to Old-Rocker's topic in POD HD
+1...I've tried plugging straight into the front of a variety of amps with the 500X (and other modelers over the years). It's a dead end, simple as that. Daisy chaining a modeler and a preamp together is an ugly mess. Time to go amp shopping... -
Almost everything is obsolete in a year's time, now. It's not even about necessity anymore, it's the tech-obsessed, instant gratification culture we've created. I've made my peace with it. It's either that, or go broke buying every new piece of gear that's released. You could bounce from one rig to another every 6 months if you wanted to...but I have neither the time, the energy, nor the funds to do that.

Variax JTV 69 Oportunity
cruisinon2 replied to shredjsx's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
It's all relative of course, but as far as I'm concerned the 69's neck ain't "normal". It's the narrowest nut I've ever seen on a production guitar. String spacing is unmanageable for open position chords unless you've got tiny hands. I lasted about 6 weeks with it before I ordered a replacement.
