  1. Closed back cans tend to artificially pump up the low end, so for tweaking tones you will usually find yourself struggling to dial back the bass all the time...if you then try to use patches set up that way through an amp (even an FRFR one), or to record direct, you'll end up having to put back all low end. Ends up being a bass up, bass down rollercoaster.
  2. If you remember too much, then there wasn't enough trouble... :P
  3. Fair enough...so I guess that makes these knobs slightly less crappy than I thought! :D
  4. Agree with all the above...there is nothing else out there that you can spend $100 on that will instantly give you this many extra options. Even if you only end up using 3 or 4 of the new models reguarly, it's still a bargain. Really liking the Shiva and Variac'ed Plexi so far...
  5. 4CM if you want to use your amp's pre-amp...otherwise, it's guitar--->POD--->FX return on the Marshall, assuming that it has one. If not, then you're stuck going straight into the front of the amp...which can be done, trying the POD's various output modes to see which one works best for you. But be prepared for this to suck...because you are daisy-chaining the modeled amp into the Marshall's pre-amp. In my experience, this is excessively noisy, and doesn't end well. If you really want to take advantage of the what the POD can do, you need some kind of powered FRFR speaker. Options range from $300-$500 powered PA speakers or wedge monitors, all the way to more "guitar amp-like" looking enclosures, many of which are quite pricey...but you don't have to spend a fortune.
  6. No worries...couple extra weeks of rotting in a container on a cargo ship is good for guitars..."Try the new pretzel neck Variax!"
  7. Mine is still intact, so I don't know for sure...but I seriously doubt it's metal. Most likely chromed plastic...that's what mine feels like.
  8. Unless you find a used 500 for pennies on the dollar (new will be tough to find at this point), you may as well just get the 500X...it has sturdier footswitches, and the models are all the same anyway.
  9. Two reasons: 1) Because nobody pays attention to anything anymore, and too many choices confuses people..."What did I see on the home page? FireSpider, AmpliHawk, DT50 Standard?" and 2) The Gadget Generation has the attention span of a house fly. Therefore you smack your customers in the face...over and over...with the one item you really want them to buy...advertising always works that way.
  10. You're dreaming. "Favorites" make the world go 'round. Every company in the world charts out, down to the penny, which retailers have the most success peddling their wares. Guess where the first production run goes when a product launches...to the place that is calculated to sell out first and place another order.
  11. 1) If everything is panned dead center, then it's just a matter of trying out different amp/cab combinations and adjusting channel volumes to taste. 2) EQ can be used 1000 ways, what works for you is mostly personal preference. I tend to use a parametric EQ with narrow Q to focus in on unwanted harsh frequencies, then just dial them back. But the mid-focus works too...you may find that what works for one amp model, might not be the best choice for another. Lotsa ways to skin a cat...if it sounds good, it is good. 3) We can argue this all day long and get nowhere...opinions vary. There's no way around experimenting. Just because I like a certain approach doesn't mean you will...and neither of us is "right". Your ears will tell you what's good, and what sucks, lol. Happy tweaking!
  12. That's interesting...I had and HD150 briefly, didn't know it could do that. I skimmed through the manual just now, couldn't find anything about it in there. Nice feature to have, but if you ask me having the master volume red-lined by default and unadjustable is asking for trouble. Sooner or later you'll forget, or won't be paying attention when you're plugging in, and you'll blow yourself into next week...lol
  13. Sucks man...something crapped out. Surgery time...
  14. "Voiding the warranty just by opening the back like that guy did in the photos" isn't "doing" anything. It's loosening a bunch of screws and removing a piece of plastic. Even plucking out the ball end of a broken string isn't modifying anything. Beating the innards with a ball peen hammer, or deciding to rinse the guts with turpentine would be "doing something". You're allowed to look at your own guitar.
  15. Oh good, it's all settled... When will the press release with the official apology be ready? If we hurry, we can still make the morning papers
  16. But you didn't hold his hand, saying supportive and nurturing things, during what is obviously a time of great emotional upheaval...which of course makes you part of the problem, you heartless rogue. ;) Lord knows I've stayed up nights ruminating over the next guitar I won't buy...Jeesh, gets whinier every day around here.
  17. I'm most curious why there was no fanfare accompanying this firmware release...lost in the POD shuffle perhaps? Usually they're hot on the new stuff, expecially if there are new models in there.
  18. Save your patches, tell your buddy he owes you $500, and go shopping... ;) Seriously tho, unless there was a power surge that fried something while you were over there, it's probably just a coincidence...something's up though. Save everything and try a factory reset. If still no joy, it's repair bench time...good luck.
  19. Round and round we go... As intricate as the JTVs are...it's not the space shuttle. Wouldn't a better question be "How likely am I to need service on the thing in the first place?" Survey says: Not very...
  20. Nobody said you can't open the back...perhaps my response wasn't clear. It's a ridiculous assumption...what he's basing it on, I have no idea. Not to mention utterly unenforceable, even if he's right. So what would be the point?
  21. Don't get too exited...you're allowed all of ONE down vote per day. Think positive, damn it!... :P
  22. I'll never get it...maybe it's because I wasn't raised to believe that the world and everyone in it exists to service my needs, and that I "deserve" this, that, or the other thing just because I'm breathing. You have a need, do your research and purchase a product that you think will fullfill said need...sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. I've never wasted time or energy expecting something I bought to change from one day to the next, or become something "better" than what it was the day I bought it. If it happens as an accident of fate, and I get something for free...wonderful, it's gravy. But to walk around with such unrealistic expectations makes absolutely no sense to me, and it never will...for the simple reason that more often that not, you're gonna be disappointed.
