If it sounds wrong, then compensate. It's hard to see how either a meter or a block input ideal range indicator replace ears. IMO this is a mountain out of a molehill.

Yes, I remember you talking about putting a Rat (IIRC) in front of a 5150 and not being happy with the results. Given what high gain amps actually do, putting a distortion pedal in front of them might not always produce optimal results, even for metal. I don't understand the next bit where you say "the amp after it isn't able to drive it in the same way" - I presume you mean the pedal drives the amp after it. If you somehow manage to end up with less than a shedload of swarming distortion all over the place, turn up the pedal output a tick at a time until it sounds terrifying enough. Which reminds me: do not some metal players use a distortion pedal (or two) in front of a clean SS power amp? Perhaps to avoid the overdrive overkill problem? If you cannot hear it, nobody else is likely to be able to either, especially at performance volume.

That's not quite the same as the gain issue you were discussing. Changing the monitoring will change the sound you hear, although if things go to 'utter crap' when you switch between (good) headphones and a studio monitor then there may be problems with one or both of those. Do you develop your patches using headphones btw?

If it sounds right, then it is right, unless you distrust your own ears :-)

My impression is that the OP does indeed rely on Customtone for patch bases. ********************** @kringle One way of controlling the patch gain problem is to preserve something close to unity gain within the patch. So start with nothing - no blocks at all - then add the amp block and A/B until it is roughly unity with dry. Then the cab block(s) and do it again. Then any gain-boosting blocks and do it again. Patches for HBs may well need a few dB cut on the Output block compared to those for use with single coils but if you follow this method with all your patches, managing final output gain across the patch library will be easier.

Got that too and flagged it with the Report function.

Thanks for clearing that up :-) I was Googling around frantically trying to find that deal too...

Off to Ideascale we go :-)

No end to the man's inventiveness... :-) And the beauty of Helix is that it does all that for you... :-0

You feed 'em the lines... ;-)

Next time, stack up a few washing machines :-) Does wonders for the tonez, that.

Yes, I noticed that. It is a bit odd, I have to admit.
-
Thanks for this, but all done, long ago. It seems to be a 'false positive', if an error message can be so described :-)

Bassman is one of my favourite amps on Helix, so lots of time with the 4 x 10 Tweed, which is indeed a fine cab. But I do have a soft spot for twin 4 x 12 Greenback 25s, dynamic on one, ribbon on 'tother, in the traditional way :-)
-
Thanks! I suspect the same because everything just *works* but discovering someone else has the same issue is... reassuring.

Already on 2.82, and as I said, this is an old (and minor) issue, not related to the Big Shift at v2.80ff.

Not at all a problem, but a puzzle... When I switch on my Helix floor unit, my PC always flags up the 'USB device not recognised' error... but Helix and HX Edit work perfectly ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Anyone else have this? Been going on for at least a year, and maybe longer, through several W10 builds (currently on 1903).

Ahem. Goodness me. More tea, vicar?

A fine, impassioned and informative rant, but paragraphs are to prose what mix quality is to music. :-)

Bu-bu-but I'm a Brit... does that mean I don't get any food? :-(

Yes, another, very interesting tool in the kit - thanks again for the pointer. I blush to admit it, but I don't think I'd even noticed that it had appeared until you flagged it up. What's more, I doubt I would have figured out what it was good *for* without some help :-)

I've been experimenting with this too. It works better with some amp / cab combinations than with others as sometimes the low frequency boost is too much. It's really good to have an alternative, fast, one-stop EQ to the High/Low Cut block though. I'm slowly working through patches A/B-ing between the two to see which gives the best results. Definitely a good tip :-)

And yet some people run pickups with enough output to power a lightbulb into a high gain amp model - all dimed - then complain that it sounds hideous... and blame Helix... :-)
