I've been tinkering with Craig's technique and have had really great results with the Plexi Trem jumped and Plexi 100 jumped models. Have a go... costs nothing and sounds fantastic...

Could you just confirm your setup - are the headphones connected directly to Stomp? And do you have the output set to INST and the phones monitor to MAIN L/R? What's your VOLUME control knob on Stomp set to (eg. 9 o'clock, 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock etc)

That could have been some of my comments. BUT I have found that when correctly set up, Helix Floor delivers perfectly crystalline clear clean tones using the Roland JC model. All I can suggest is that the OP does the basic sound-check: 1/ Play hard through an empty patch (no blocks at all) - is there clipping? If YES then either the input or the OUTPUT is too hot. Fix that and problem should resolve 2/ If the empty patch is clean, establish UNITY GAIN by adding the JC amp+cab block (stock settings) and turning down the CAB BLOCK level until the output is roughly equivalent with the amp+cab block OFF (empty patch). Unfortunately, I have the floor unit, not Stomp and I don't know my way around Stomp so I cannot go into specifics. However, the general principles are universal - don't clip the input or have a hot output clipping whatever you connect the unit to next. Don't stray too far from unity gain (empty patch signal vs populated patch signal).

Indeed you do :-) Thanks for posting this, it's been illuminating.

Good haul - keep it up :-) Pretty similar to my rack, really - LP, white Strat and a Mockingbird standing in where the PRS fits in your lineup.

If I had a digital clipping problem, you can be sure I'd acknowledge it :-) But I don't. Actually, what Phil said reminds me that right at the outset, when I first got Helix, I *did* have a clipping issue. I was running Helix into a Yamaha MG mini-mixer and the output signal from Helix was a bit too hot. Once I turned the master volume knob down to about 12 o'clock, no more clipping.

I'd expect selecting a low impedance to have more effect on tone than setting the pad on (my default preference even with low output pickups) but try 'em all and see what you like best...

Well, I bought a Helix floor at Christmas 2017/18 and I will run it for four years minimum. If a successor unit is launched in the meantime, I'll probably wait until the fourth year is up then upgrade. I have no problem paying ~ £250 / year for current Helix quality sound. Many people pay that and more for a single pedal, never mind a vintage / boutique amp etc. Try as I might, I can't understand the moaners - the current unit is superb if set up carefully and I agree with earlier comments about the diminishing returns from modelling fidelity vs DSP and additional functionality.

Given some of the shameless trolling on this thread, so would I.

? I'm not playing word games with you. I've tried to be clear, but may have failed. But speaking of word games, I didn't say that.

And I'd be even more suprised if it didn't, along with others here, I suspect. Yup, the devs will call it a day at 2.9 just to spite us all. I have to say that now I am resigned to the fact that we won't ever be getting a local weather feed in Edit I could live with that. Some of the amp models are actually pretty good as they stand. And the other stuff too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uW2lucCx_8

Imagine the panic at Fender if Leo had insisted that actual real amps got developed professionally fast :-) Helix firmware isn't a YouTube channel. Chiding it for not spewing the new fast enough is a misplaced criticism, imo. Unless there are specifics you want addressed, in which case it's a different conversation.

Not until the 21June solstice, in the Northern Hemisphere...

Patience is a virtue, as dear old Granny always used to say ;-)

Basic comprehension skills and logic, as explained, twice, above.

Like I said, IIRC. Plenty of eyes on this thread, so no doubt someone can either correct or corroborate.
-
Apples and oranges. Where's the template for 'professional speed' (which is meaningless, as stated) in the modelling sector? Citing your own authority straight after a logical fallacy of false equivalence is not persuasive. As pointed out earlier, this is baseless moaning couched in flawed rhetoric.
-
This is a false framing. There exists no template for 'developing [modellers] at a professional speed'. What does this even mean? Asserting that a product doesn't match some arbitrary and nebulous criterion is more than a little pointless. As for continuing development and support, IIRC L6 has stated that Helix has plenty of life in it yet - as in years.
-
Steady on :-) I suspect many of us are more sanguine.
-
Is there any evidence supporting this? I'm not actually disagreeing with the statement as such because I don't know if it is supported by any facts.

Late to party again, but what codamedia said. The end of chain PEQ tops and tails the mic'd cab signal, and starting with the basic brackets at 100Hz / 12kHz and tightening as needed to get rid of flub and screech is the way to go, imho...

Overdrive/distortion tones not sounding good at all
BBD_123 replied to m6stringtosh's topic in Helix
And now you can hear what the Helix unit is doing more clearly and get it working right for you. Talking about low and high cuts, a Parametric EQ block at the end of the chain is a great way of setting the low and high cuts. There's a view that it can sound better than making the cuts in the cab block. YMMV,, but I switched from cab block EQ cuts to the PEQ and it's worked for me, so you might want to give it a try next time you're in the mood for some tone-tinkering :-) -
God I feel old now ;-) You kidz don't know how hard it was for us old folk back in the day :-)
-
For sure about the Hiwatt for metal - it's got muscle in the low and mid and bite at the top. It's a monster amp, really :-) And as for the crazy stuff, this is the new world you get with modelling, isn't it? I'd have sold a kidney for this when I was 20 :-)

>> Grab it, third scene (ready for you ;) ) https://line6.com/customtone/tone/4398233/ That's way better than my effort with the Uber so far... I hadn't turned the preamp gain down enough and was thinking 'meh, doesn't clean up enough' (d'oh). You are right, the Uber can be made to give a great clean tone. So thanks again for the tip. That said, the Hiwatt does a nice one as well, but there's room in the world for both of them :-)
